Can I use my iMac (20" G5) as a display for the MacBook Pro 13"?

Can I connect an iMac(20" G5) as a display for the MacBook Pro 13"? If yes, what adapters I need? Does it need modification or software for the iMac?

You need to use ScreenRecycler or a VNC client.

  • Can I use my iMac 2009 as an external monitor for a MacBook Pro

I will soon be getting a new MacBook Pro with Retina display. It has an HDMI port.
My current iMac 21.5" late 2009 model seems to have a port with what looks like a little monitor symbol, next to the firewire port. And the specs say:
    Graphics and video support
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory3
ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics processor with 256MB of GDDR3 memory
    Built-in iSight camera
Mini DisplayPort output port with support for DVI, VGA, and dual-link DVI (adapters sold separately).
Support for extended desktop and video mirroring modes
Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to a 30-inch display (2560 by 1600 pixels) on an external display
Does this mean that port is just for video output to an external monitor? Or is is possible to also do video in?
On the one hand it feels like a waste to use a perfectly good iMac as a monitor. But the MacBook Pro actually has better specs, and so I was wondering if it is possible anyway.
    Thanks,

Thanks for your reply. After reading the article though, I'm still not really sure what the answer is. For example, you mention something that can be done, with some hurdles to go through, for 27" iMacs. Mine is a 21.5" iMac, but seems to have the same port you mentioned in the article. Or maybe it isn't. Anyway, I'm still not sure if it is possible after reading that. Interesting information though.

  • How can I use my iMac (2007) as an external display to my MacBook Pro (2013) while in bootcamp?

I have an old 2007 iMac laying around that is too slow for use as a second computer, however I could greatly benefit from a second monitor for what I'm doing on my 2013 MacBook Pro while in bootcamp's windows mode (Photoshop, Illustrator, Rhinoceros, etc.). A hardware solution would be ideal, however I am aware that this might not work for an iMac older than 2009. I would appreciate any software suggestions for allowing the use of my 2007 iMac as a second monitor for my 2013 MacBook Pro while on the windows side via bootcamp.
    Thanks,
    Andy

Target Display Mode is supported in OS X only. Please see Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Apple Support.

  • Can I use 27' iMac(Later 2009) as a display for Mac Pro(future 2013)?

    Can I use 27' iMac(Later 2009) as a display for Mac Pro(future 2013)?

To be able to use the iMac as an external display, the Mac Pro should come with a Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt port, so think that it will include Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt, although we don't know anything.
To connect the iMac to the Mac Pro, as your iMac has got a Mini DisplayPort, you have to use a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable (Thunderbolt is compatible with Mini DisplayPort cables, but Mini DisplayPort isn't compatible with Thunderbolt cables). Then, just follow the steps of the page above to use the iMac as an external display

  • I would like to use my IMAC (early 2006) as a monitor for my macbook pro. Is it possible?

Is it possible to use as a monitor for a macbook pro an IMAC (early 2006)?

There's no direct input, but ScreenRecycler and Air Display both allow you to use any networked computer as additional display. I haven't tried either but perhaps one of them would work for you.

  • Can I use old version adobe acrobat 7.0 Professional for my macbook pro. I just bought this software and is non returnable.

I just bought this software from RAFT teacher resources and it's non returnable. I don't know that it doesn't support macbook pro.  Is there anyway can you help me if you can. I don't want to waste it.  Thanks.  Best regards, Vivian.

There is absolutely nothing you can do with this software if your Mac OS version is newer than 10.6; Macs less than about 5 years old cannot run older versions of Mac OS . It is no more use to you than a brick. It is an extraordinary thing to sell. Acrobat is now at version 11. Version 7 is more than 10 years old. I had a look but I don't see this on the RAFT store.

  • Can I use my iMac as a 'display' for my MacBook Pro?

Hi all, I am really hoping someone can help me here.
I am wondering if I can use my 24" iMac as a display for my MacBook Pro (both running Snow Leopard).
It's my father's 80th birthday party in about 24 hours time. I am doing up the music and slideshow (thanks Apple - so easy!).
My plan was to simply take my iMac and use it. However, I managed to drop the wireless keyboard (darn those dogs) and now my keyboard won't work. I have no backup keyboards here (gave the wired one to Dad to use with his Mac mini). I live in a country area with no access to a Mac store and it will take more than 24 hours to get a new one. Went to my local 'other computer' general store last night: I really don't want to buy an ugly black keyboard..... I have just had a great idea:
Can I network my MacBook Pro and use it as the source for the slide show and simply use the iMac as a display? I have plenty of DVI adaptors but am just not sure how I would go about the software side of things? Or should I simply buy an ugly PC keyboard (and if I do, will the WIndows button work as an Apple button???)
Any suggestions would be really appreciated.
    Thanks!

The imac 24 can't be used as a monitor over a DVI connection or the like, Suzanne, but you may be able to achieve what you want to using "Screen Sharing" by networking the two computers. This lets your MBP effectively control what is running on the iMac.
See HERE for the basic setup. For information about how to access the "shareable" screen from the MBP see HERE.
One possible problem may be actually getting this set-up on the iMac if it is not already enabled, however, unless you can borrow a keyboard from someone (your password may have to be entered to enable it). You may be able to get around this, if necessary, using the "keyboard viewer" (which you can place in the menubar using System preferences > Keyboard, if you don't already have it there).
    Cheers
    Rod

  • Can I hook use an  older iMac as an display for my Macbook Pro?

Can I use an older iMac as an display for my Macbook Pro?  The Macbook Pro has the Mini display port and the iMac has the older (larger) display port.  I am trying to have a document open on the iMac while writing a paper on the Macbook Pro.
    Thank you for your time.

You can use the Mid 2011 iMac as a display for your 2011 MacBook Pro. Both have Thunderbolt, so you won't have any problem > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Buy a Thunderbolt cable and press Command and F2 keys on the iMac to enable Target Display

Could it be a borked cable ? I just bought it new from the store today, i have updated both imac and macbook pro to latest thunderbolt firmware and updates. Both 10.7.3.

You are correct, here is what Apple Says:

I was able to find these instructions, however they referr to 2009-2011 27" iMacs. I think it's the same, if it's not then contact Apple directly for instructions. If either of the machines is less than 90 days old or covered by AppleCare then call AppleCare tomorrow for help, they should be able to easily answer this for you. You will find the number in your manual or you can use the AppleCare Contact Info link.
Your iMac should automatically recognize the presence of a digital video signal at the Mini DisplayPort and enter Target Display Mode.
If your iMac does not automatically enter Target Display Mode, press command + F2 to manually enter Target Display Mode.

Is there are a way to use my imac as a display for my macbook pro? I have a thunderbolt cable but it doesnt seem to do anything

    Hello eassic,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like Target Display Mode may be what you are looking for:
Target Display Mode lets you use a Mac as the external display for another “primary” Mac. In some cases, you can also play the sound from your primary Mac on the speakers of the external Mac. For example, a MacBook Pro could use a 27-inch iMac as the display and play its audio on the iMac as well.
OS X Mountain Lion: Use another Mac as a display
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302
Use an iMac with Thunderbolt as a display
If you have an iMac with Thunderbolt, any other Mac with Thunderbolt can use it as a display. The iMac will play both the video and audio from the other Mac.
    1. Connect the Thunderbolt cable to the Thunderbolt ports on each computer.
    2. Make sure both Mac computers are turned on and awake.
    3. Press Command (⌘)-F2 on the keyboard of the external display Mac.
    4. If you want the external display Mac to play audio as well as video from the primary Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Sound, and then click Output. Select the external display Mac from the list of devices.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Can I use an adapter to get thunderbolt on my early 09 MacBook pro

Can I use an adapter to get thunderbolt on my early 09 MacBook pro?

No.  ThunderBolt is a direct connection to your systems PCI Express bus.  There is no way for your existing ports to do this with any sort of external adapter.
