Can I use my mac mini as a network drive on my wireless network?

I would like to redeploy my Mac Mini to be a network server drive off of my Airport Extreme router? Is this possible? Is it difficult? How do I do it? Thanks!

Yes, you can use your Mac mini as a network file server. The mini can be connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) by either Ethernet or wireless to share files to other network clients.
Please see the following Apple Support article for details on how to configure your Mac for file sharing.

I am going to purchase a macbook to replace my old mac mini.   Can I use my old macmini as a cd drive for it?

Yes.  You need to visit this support site:

can i use my mac mini for some users at the same time? i mean with their own screen, mouse, and keyboard

If you're asking whether more than one user can use the computer at the same time with multiple displays, the answer is no. Other users can log in over a network with Screen Sharing, but each one will need his own computer (not necessarily a Mac.)

  • Installing Win7 on a macbook pro using a mac mini as external optical drive

    hi everyone,
My 2 year old son watches movies on my macbook pro. He stuck something in the optical drive making it unusable. Repairing it is 200 to 300 euros (ouch).
I want to install win7 via bootcamp and I'm using my mac mini (october 2009) as an external optical drive. These are my steps:
1.hold the "t" on the mac mini
2.connect it to the macbook with a firewire 800 to firewire 400 cable
3.Power up and hold the "alt" on the macbook
4.I see the optical drive on the boot screen and I choose it
5.Then I get a blank screen and a few seconds later the "missing operating system" message appears.
Am I missing something? Is it possible to install win7 using a mac mini as an external drive?
PS1:I already have partitioned the HD with bootcamp.
PS2:I've upgraded the hard disk drive of the macbook with a seagate momentus 500GB hard disk. Don't think this is the problem, thought I should mentioned it.

    Hi Mike,
For reference it is called "IP over Firewire".
Connect the two computers with a fire wire cable. System Preferences > Network > Configure IPv4: > Manually > IP address: 192.168.3.1 (and .2 on other) > Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0. Leave the other fields blank. Do this on both computers on the computer you want to allow access to or both for two way access go to System Preference > Sharing > Select a service to change its settings. Turn remote Login on.
On the MBP go to the Finder Menu > Go > Connect to Server > Type in the IP address of the Mini 192.168.3.2 (Whatever you gave it)
With this configuration you still have full use of the Mini and certain apps can use Xgrid and use the processor of the mini when it is not doing anything. I would keep the Mini as 10.4 unless you really need both machines running Leopard. As noted before you cannot boot the MBP from a HDD that is Apple Partition Scheme and vice versa you cannot boot the PPC from a Guide Partition Table.

  • Can I use a Mac mini with a VGA monitor?

The Mac mini web page lists an Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter as an accessory, but the Mac mini doesn't appear to have a Mini DisplayPort.
The Mac mini also has an HDMI to DVI Adapter included, but would this allow a VGA monitor to be connected via an additional DVI to VGA cable? ie. can the HDMI port provide an analogue signal that a VGA monitor can receive?

Some Mac Minis do have mini-DisplayPorts.  In these two it is between the HDMI and the USB ports:
    (yes Thunderbolt should accept mini-Displayport).
In this one it is between the Mini-DVI and the USB ports:
Only the oldest Intel models would you need a different adapter to VGA
Those you would need a DVI to VGA adapter from Apple such as this one.  Note, DVI to VGA is converting digital to analog, and not very useful, unless your TV has neither DVI nor HDMI.  DVI is much better converted up to HDMI.  And the audio would have to come in separately.  So depending on your display model and make, you may be asking for the wrong adapter.  VGA is fine if all you are going to do is view DVDs on an old TV.  But if you want the ability to use the Dock, menubar, etc..., it is good to have a 1080p TV with built-in HDMI or better.

  • Can I use my mac mini as an apple tv

Hi I have a complete home server setup with one gaming PC and one home server PC, 2 apple TV 3rd Gen and some IP cameras. I would like to know if I can use a Mac Mini as an Apple TV. I feel the features are lacking in the apple TV as I need something with an Internet browser and something that can stream 3d movies to my TV and for the TV to recognize this content. Will it be worth it considering I have a server PC with all my movies, music, pictures and series on it. I don't own a Mac mini yet but I'm thinking of buying one.

I do not realy understand what you want to do. You can AirPlay to Mini with Reflector from the server if the serve support AirPly Mirroring
    A supported Mac
AirPlay Mirroring in OS X takes advantage of the hardware capabilities of recent Macs to deliver high frame rates while maintaining optimal system performance. The following Mac models support AirPlay Mirroring when using OS X Mountain Lion or later:
    iMac (Mid 2011 or newer)
Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer)
Mac Pro (Late 2013 or newer)
The Apple remote is very limited to what it can do with a Mini

  • Can you use a Mac Mini to share documents between several devices? iPhones, MacBooks, iPads, etc...? We are a home based business with several locations across the state and are having Google Drive issues, looking into Mac Mini options.

We are having Google Drive issues (some files won't sync) and it's causing us trouble with our business communication. Is there any way to use a Mac Mini to share documents between two people in different areas similar to google drive? Would this just be done through iCloud?

If you use Numbers, Pages and KeyNote it si very easy to sync those document among all the Apple devices. You need montain Lion on the Mac  and at least iOS 5 on the mobile devices.
I show those document on my Mac, iPad 4 and iPhone 4S

  • How come i can't use my ipod mini as a hard drive

I learnt how to use my ipod mini as a hard drive by watching the video on this web site. But after I check "enable disc use" and then exit out of itunes, nothing happens. it says in the video that after you exit out of itunes a box will appear showing your ipod and then you can begin adding files to your ipod, but this doesn't happen for me. can you tell me why?

Go to My Computer and find your iPod, it would be under removable disks.

You can require users to enter a password to access the Time Capsule disk, if that is what you mean by "secure".

  • Can I use a Mac Mini as NAS

I have had apple handheld devices for some time but am making the change to mac computers. We currently have a near dead dell laptop with 500GB of storage. We have used 400GB mostly in photos, videos and iTunes date.
What I would like to do is buy a:
    - MacBook Air with 128GB
    - Mac mini with 1TB of storage
    - Airport Time Capsule
The reason I am buying the mini is so that I can use it as a storage device for all the photos, music and video which can be tapped into and shared by the apple TV, iPads, iPhones and MacBook. I am basically using it as a shared storage device for out media files that will benefit from backups on the Time Capsule
My question to this forum is, will it work well in this capacity? Can I easily move data from my Macbook to the Mac Mini? Can I upload photos from a camera connected to the macbook and safe them on the mini.
    Please advise.
    Many thanks,
    D

    Use file sharing
Mac Basics: File Sharing - Apple Support
You can also setup screen sharing on the Mini so once you set up the Mini with mouse, KB and monitor yo no lnoger need a a mouse, KB and monitopr on the Mini

  • Can I use an Mac Mini without a monitor?

I'm using a Mac specifically to develop a mobile app, and the intention was that once everything was set up, I could just TeamViewer in to take control without needing a monitor. This works fine with a monitor plugged in, but when I disconnect the monitor, I stop getting the screen.
So I suppose my question is: if I disconnect the monitor, does it stop sending the screen to TeamViewer? I could kind of understand if this was the case, but I need to know whether I absolutely must have a monitor or if there's a workaround.
Thanks in advance for any and all assistance rendered.

It should work headless, but you might need to use a dummy VGA monitor as described in this blog:
Build a Dummy Dongle for a headless Mac mini

  • Can. I use my MAC Mini in conjunction with my iMac?

Can I use my MAC Mini in conjunction with my iMAC? I can not upgrade the OS of the iMAC due to software that I need and Lion does not support it.
If I could bounce back an forth or use the software from the MAC Mini with the iMAC, this would solve my dilemma.

Before I buy a networked drive can I use the airport to connect with an external
USB drive and set both macs  use the  drive as a time machine
Can you hook this up? Sure.
Is is supported by Apple?  No.
Some users report that this seems to work when they try it.
Others....like me....have corruption problems anywhere from a few days to a few months after I set up a test....which I do whenever a new version of firmware or a new operating system becomes available.
We cannot predict your results, so if you decide to try this, and your backups are valuable, you might want to have a secondary backup plan in place as well....just in case.

  • Have a new iMac.  can i use my old mini as an external cd/dvd drive?

Just got my new imac and have discovered it is without a cd/dvd drive.  Since I have converted from a mac mini can I use the old mini as an external drive, and how do I do that if the response is yes?

    I use LaCie.
My last cd/dvd burner was a LaCie, and it worked perfectly for three years before a bronze sculpture fell off a shelf and landed on it, putting a big dent right in the top of the metal case. I thought that would be the end, but it kept working perfectly, dent and all, for another two years before I finally replaced it.
When my current drive needs to be replaced, that will be a LaCie, too. Same with their external hard drives. And no, I don't work for them.

  • MBA use with Mac Mini

Can I use the Mac Mini as an external cd drive for my MBA?

Connect the computers to the same network, insert a CD in the Mac mini, start File Sharing from the Sharing pane of System Preferences, choose Connect to Server from the Finder's Go menu on the MacBook Air, and log into the Mac mini.
