Can I use second drive from my G5 in a Mac Pro?

Does anyone know whether I can transfer the second drive in my G5 Power Mac to an opend rive bay in a Mac Pro?
Thanks in advance
Rod

Daniel,
Rest assured your 2-3 yr old SATA drives will work. An "ATA" (EIDE or PATA) will not work. There is a tight fit, but nothing to prevent using any SATA drive.
Your G5 drives will work just fine. Drives that are newer, SATA II (3Gb/sec) will run slightly better, and the Mac Pro has support for things like NCQ.
Four drive "sleds" are included, each with the necessary screws for attaching a SATA drive. The 250GB Seagate 7200.9 drive included with the computer had SATA-only power connections, while a 80GB Maxtor SATA drive from our Power Mac G5/1.8 had both SATA and traditional power connections, but it, too, fit into the supplied sockets when the sled was pushed into place.
Serial ATA Drive Interface
The Mac Pro comes standard with one 7200 rpm, 3 Gbps Serial ATA (SATA) disk drive and three additional 3 Gbps SATA slots for adding hard disk drives. The SATA drives interface through an AHCI 1.1 controller that supports advanced SATA-II features Native Command Queuing (NCQ) and PHY power management. NCQ increases performance on random workloads by allowing the drive to re-order commands to reduce seek time and increase transactional efficiency.
In addition, the Mac Pro has two unpopulated 3 Gbps SATA buses for expansion. Looking at System Profiler, all 6 SATA busses seem to be active
For more information on SATA, see Serial ATA International Organization.
For information on the AHCI controller, see AHCI Specifications.

If the display has a DVI connector it will plug into the Mac Pro directly.  If it uses ADC (Apple Display Connector)

you will need a DVI to ADC adapter

No. Target Display mode is only supported when connected to a Mac running 10.6 or later.
It cannot be used with a PC, bootcamp, gamaing console, cable box, DVR or PowerPC Mac.

  • Can I use the internal drives from my PPC on a mac pro for storage?

Hi guys, I have a PPC dual G5 2.0 with 2 internal HD serial ATA (both). Im getting a mac pro today (mac pro 2.66 dual intel xenon) and I was wondering if I can use my drives in the new mac to have more space. Im not trying to have both osx 10.4 and 10.6 on the same machine, just storage. Also, do RAM memory will work?
    Thanks guys!

If you check OWC, www.macsales.com you can get an idea of ram prices and internal hard drive prices for that machine.  OWC specializes in Macs and has an outstanding reputation for customer support.
With terra byte drive prices down at $100 or so, it is hard to justify the older, smaller, slower drives...you will just get frustrated

    Hi:
You should be able to do that with no problem.
Just make sure the disk drive you purchase is the same specification (SATA II, 2.5") and size in GB (or larger size) then the original one.

  • Can I put these drives from my old PPC power Mac G5 in my brand new Mac Pro

Should not be a problem, but that doesn't mean that just having the PPC system doesn't / hasn't affected one or two users.
The safest way is to put it in a FW case of course, a way to mount it after boot up.
Run the Mac Pro as is for a day. Clone the system, may as well get started with backup and fall back if needed. Even run Apple Hardware Test. Get to know everything works, booting, monitor and everything, and that it sleeps/wakes and does all the normal things it should properly.

  • Can I install internal HD from PowerMac G4 in my Mac Pro?

I have an old, Quicksilver PowerMac G4.  After purchasing a Mac Pro, I want to use the internal storage from the old one as a backup system for the new one.  Can I physically install the my 3 internal drives from the G4 into the 3 open slots on my Mac Pro?  I know nothing about how the architecture of internal drives have changed since I bought them in 2004 (I'm assuming a LOT).  I'd rather not keep the G4 sitting in my office, taking up space, and I thought this might be the best way to go about utilizing that HD space (I have about 280GB).

the first SATA were just a PATA with Marvel bridge slapped on and were not native SATA.
    Perpendicular came later.
So it went from 60 to 75 and then to 105MB/sec and now outstrips even that.
15K SCSI went from 60 to 75 to 90 (the Maxtor Atlas 15K II was a nice little drive that gave the Cheetah a run for it).
As Maxtor was improving and Seagate was having terrible drive firmware issues it was however too late for Maxtor that had lost market confidence.
The "deathstar" was due to use of non-Lucent DSP but there too even though later models were fine and the 180 GXPs were golden, IBM first shed PC business and then IBM Hitachi business.
I never cared for Seagate beyond their Cheetah line, switched to Maxtor and while never had great luck with IBM Ultrastar SCSI their PATA and SATA were fine by me. And avoided the 75GXP Deathstars.
Yes a lot of change but I would go so far and to simplify as just the switch to SATA is all.

  • Can I use my iMac as a screen for my Mac Pro via Spaces?

Ok, I know this sounds odd... Nevertheless, I wanted to know if it's possible to do this. I write a lot of music and want to use two completely different computers to manipulate midi files vs. audio files. I want to use my Mac Pro for actually writing the music, and then render the files as audio and arrange them on my iMac.
I don't want to get a second monitor, but rather, be able to flip back and forth between my iMac and my Mac Pro on the same screen, relatively quickly. I'm not sure if Spaces has this capability, ie. using one desktop that corresponds to the iMac and one desktop that corresponds to the Mac Pro, all on the iMac's screen.
Is this even possible or does the iMac not even have the capability of accepting a video signal from my Mac Pro?

If you Mac Pro has a mini display port out, then the iMac can be used as a monior for the Mac Pro. This is from the apples support document:
To use a 27-inch iMac in Target Display mode with another computer as the source:
    1. Make sure both computers are turned on and awake.
    2. Connect a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort cable to the Mini DisplayPort on each computer. The 27-inch iMac will enter Target Display mode and display content from the source computer.
Note: If you are connecting two 27-inch iMacs, connect a Mini DisplayPort cable to each computer and press Command + F2 on the 27-inch iMac keyboard that you will use as an external display.
    3. To leave Target Display mode, press Command + F2 on the keyboard of the 27-inch iMac that is in Target Display mode. To return to Target Display mode, press Command + F2 again.

  • Can I use XP, Vista and Windows Server on my Mac Pro

Looking for options to have multiple Operating Systems available for bootup.
I need to have the ability to run XP, Vista, Windows 2003 and Windows 2008 server. I am currently using a Windows PC with BootCommander. I want to use my Mac Pro for its power.
I have tried to use VMWare Fusion and it works perfectly. However, Camtasia crashes regularly within Fusion and I need high resolution desktop captures and the way virtualization does (rather does not) virtualize the RAM on the video card has made it not a viable solution.
    Your help is appreciated.

Format one or more of your drives as MBR and setup some partitions. Install in proper order. Or use multiple drives. Maybe someone on Fusion forum can help.

Some have used multiple VMs with Fusion and Apple Pro RAID5.

  • Trouble using firewire drives via thunderbolt adapter on bootcamped Mac Pro 2013 towers

Here at the university, we've just installed a new classroom of Mac Pro towers (late 2013).  We like to use Bootcamp in said classroom, and so I (painstakingly) installed Windows 8.1 on a test machine.  I've found that the brand new firewire-to-thunderbolt adapters we bought don't seem to work when booted into Windows.  I have few LaCie firewire drives I use to install software packages, and the occasional WD My Book, and our students are encourage to purchase G-Drives to back up their film projects.
I have a couple of LaCie drives that I've partitioned as part Mac OS Extended and part ExFat (or even MS-DOS just in case).   The Windows-friendly partitions don't mount or even get detected, so I think it's the adapter(s) not being recognized by Windoes, especially since the firewire to thunderbolt adapters work on the Mac side.
Could this be a driver problem like what's mentioned here?

Well, no one answered at all, but somehow the problem solved itself.  I'm not sure if one of the automatic Windows updates cleared things up or what, but now I can connect Firewire drives with no problems.  Also, as some kind of bonus, Windows 8 is able to read Mac partitioned firewire drives, which I don't think was possible in Windows 7.
The problem may also have been that I hadn't entered the Windows activation key in yet? I'm not sure that makes sense in terms of Thunderbolt adapters...
10+ years ago, I read a Microsoft tip of the day that said "Problems that go away by themselves can come back by themselves." It's haunted me ever since.

  • Can I use a new CPU in my early 2009 MAC PRO Single 2.8 Quadcore

Is it possble to replace the CPU Module with the latest CPU moduels on off for the Mac Pro?
    The current one is below
    Header 1
    Header 2
Mac Pro4.1 Quad Core Intel Xeon 2.66
    i Processor Early 2009

Hello. I have done this many times. When I originally had the 2009 Nehalem single quad, it was a 2.66 processor as well. I bought the w3580 which is the top of the line of that generation and runs at 3.33 ghz with turbo boost up to 3.60. The procedure to change the 2.66 to say the 3.33 is the same as for the 2010 series processors 2.8(also nehalem w3530) and the 3.2 which is a w3565. The only processors you would not be able to upgrade with the original 2009 boards are the hex core, or w36xx series. This is because of the firmware upgrade which recognizes Westmere or B1 stepping.
Think of it this way.. any w35xx will work in the 2009 and or 2010 mac pro(single quad only) while the w36xx series will only work in the 2010 series.
Mind me asking what you currently use your mac pro for of which would warrant the need to go with a higher speed processor? You could very well just max out the memory and or pick up SSD drives and that alone will help to dramatically speed things up. W3580 3.33 will run you about 400-600 dollars, sometimes even less. The w3580 is the max you can go with the 2009 mac pro series.. then its getting the dual boards if you want to go even further, but I don't recommend that as the processor board and processors themselves are about as close to a 2010 mac pro.

  • HT201269 How can i sync my contacts from the iPhone to my mac pro?

    Hi
I am trying to sync my contacts on my IPhone to the mac pro but it seems not work.
Any one faced this issue and solved, Please advice.
    Regards

If you want your contacts to remain in sync across iOS devices, then you can use any Exchange-type of account.  For example, once you have a "clean" set of contacts with no duplicates, you could upload that into iCloud so that any change you make from your iPad would be reflected on your iPhone.  You don't have to use iCloud for e-mail since your devices can pull a contact from iCloud for use with GMail or Yahoo.
But you can also set GMail up as an Exchange account if you don't want to use iCloud.  The GMail account type in iOS is not Exchange, but you can set it up that way:
    http://support.google.com/mobile/bin/answer.py?l=en&topic=14252&answer=138740
The benefit of doing this is (a) your Google contacts remain in sync across all your devices, and (b) your GMail will then support Push notification.  Just one caveat, when you do this then the default behavior when you delete an e-mail is such that it is archived to your "All Mail" folder in GMail.  The only way to change this behavior is to use your device's Safari to navigate to m.google.com/sync and change the setting on Google's server for each of your devices.  This is a one-time thing, but important if you want trashed e-mails to really go to Trash.
As far as Contact Management Software options to clean things up, Google search is the only recommendation I have
