Can I use the 2nd Optical Drive Bay on my Mac Pro for an SSD?

Since I have no plans to add a second Optical Drive to my Mac Pro in the Second Optical Drive bay, I was wondering if I could put an SSD in that bay using a 2.5' to 3.5" drive carriage. Is this possible? Would it work? Would I be able to use it as my boot drive? Never tried this, so not sure if it would work.
Thanks in advance.

Your 2010 model has SATA wiring in that bay, so the SSD plugs right in.
Macs can boot from the drive specified in System preferences > Startup Disk.
You would need an adapter from 2.5 size of the drive to the 5.25 (CD drive) size expected, but since there are no moving parts, most folks just dump the drive in there without a bracket.
The biggest payback comes from establishing a Boot Drive with only System, Library, Applications, and the hidden Unix files including Paging/Swap. Putting the boot drive on an SSD is frosting -- it provides an incremental improvement over a spinning Boot drive.
A caution when establishing your drive -- some users have killed brand new SSD drives by cloning onto them. The manufacturers have not been helpful in telling us why this happens, but a clean Install may be a better way to proceed.

can i use Apple 2005 20-inche cinema display on Mac pro ?

If the display has a DVI connector it will plug into the Mac Pro directly.  If it uses ADC (Apple Display Connector)
    <http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/09/AppleDisplayConnector.jpg>
you will need a DVI to ADC adapter

  • Downloaded mavericks for one mac can i use the same download to install on another mac

I have downloaded for 12 hours initial installation on one mac for mavericks, and all installed successfully. Rather than download again for another mac, can I use the same download and copy on to the other mac..and if yes, where will I find it?

All you need to do is go to System Preferences > App Store and uncheck the automatic install of updates box, then download the Mavericks installer, and copy to a flash drive.  You will need a flash drive of 8 G B or more since the installer is around 5.3 GB.  The installer will be in Finder > Applications.  You can then copy that flash drive installer to the Applications folders in all the Macs you have that are capable of running Mavericks, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5842.
When the installer runs, the last step in the installtion is for the installer to erase itself.  So makng a copy before the installer runs is essential if you want to avoid redownloading.
Installing from the same installer does not cause problems for Macs on the same network.

  • Can I use a single external drive to maintain time machine backups for two Mac computers?

    Hello
We have an older mac mini and macbook air.  I have one Western Digital external USB drive.  Can I use the same drive to hold and maintain time machine backups for both machines?
I already have the macbook air time-machined on the WD drive.  I now want to backup the mac mini onto the same drive.  Is it going to over write the time machine backup or is the software smart enough to maintain two separate files, partitions, whatever it does..?

It will maintain separate backups. Note that it's generally advisable to use separate drives for best practice backup, but yes, it will work for both computers, provided you have enough space (need generally 2-3 times the total used file space for both Macs).

  • Can I use XP, Vista and Windows Server on my Mac Pro

Looking for options to have multiple Operating Systems available for bootup.
I need to have the ability to run XP, Vista, Windows 2003 and Windows 2008 server. I am currently using a Windows PC with BootCommander. I want to use my Mac Pro for its power.
I have tried to use VMWare Fusion and it works perfectly. However, Camtasia crashes regularly within Fusion and I need high resolution desktop captures and the way virtualization does (rather does not) virtualize the RAM on the video card has made it not a viable solution.
    Your help is appreciated.

Format one or more of your drives as MBR and setup some partitions. Install in proper order. Or use multiple drives. Maybe someone on Fusion forum can help.

Some have used multiple VMs with Fusion and Apple Pro RAID5.

  • Can I replace a failed hard drive on mid 2009 MacBook Pro with 1tb ssd +hdd?

    Any help?

    You might be able to.
Check either Macsales.com or iFixit.com for guides of how to add a second drive to your 2009 MBP.
I know that the SSD needs to be placed in current HDD bay and the HDD needs to be placed in the optical drive bay. So you would need a dual drive kit from either of the places mentioned above.

  • Can I use a new CPU in my early 2009 MAC PRO Single 2.8 Quadcore

Is it possble to replace the CPU Module with the latest CPU moduels on off for the Mac Pro?
    The current one is below
    Header 1
    Header 2
Mac Pro4.1 Quad Core Intel Xeon 2.66
    i Processor Early 2009

Hello. I have done this many times. When I originally had the 2009 Nehalem single quad, it was a 2.66 processor as well. I bought the w3580 which is the top of the line of that generation and runs at 3.33 ghz with turbo boost up to 3.60. The procedure to change the 2.66 to say the 3.33 is the same as for the 2010 series processors 2.8(also nehalem w3530) and the 3.2 which is a w3565. The only processors you would not be able to upgrade with the original 2009 boards are the hex core, or w36xx series. This is because of the firmware upgrade which recognizes Westmere or B1 stepping.
Think of it this way.. any w35xx will work in the 2009 and or 2010 mac pro(single quad only) while the w36xx series will only work in the 2010 series.
Mind me asking what you currently use your mac pro for of which would warrant the need to go with a higher speed processor? You could very well just max out the memory and or pick up SSD drives and that alone will help to dramatically speed things up. W3580 3.33 will run you about 400-600 dollars, sometimes even less. The w3580 is the max you can go with the 2009 mac pro series.. then its getting the dual boards if you want to go even further, but I don't recommend that as the processor board and processors themselves are about as close to a 2010 mac pro.

  • Is it better to install windows on the same mac hard drive or use the second hard drive bay as it's own? Im also using deploy studio and am having trouble creating a workflow to assign the bay.

Have mac pros with 1tb drives in tem. Trying to figure out imaging via deploy studio.

For the easist install and problem solving having W7 on it's own disk would be the best way to go.
The only thing you need to do is either take out the lower # drives ahead of the future Windows disk or put the Windows HD in bay/slot #1. (or just take out all but the future W7 disk and install it manually works too)
The easiest way would be to put the W7 drive in slot slot/bay #1 then you can still use BC Assistant to install the drivers and such.
After the install you can have the Windows drive in any slot you want.
I'm not familier with Deploy Studio so can't help you beyond this.

  • Can I Use My iMac Optical Drive In Place Of Macbook Drive?

So I have a Macbook (late 2008 model), and the optical drive essentially went bye bye. If I put a disc in, it will have trouble recognizing it and then it will eject out. Anyways, last night, I did some maintenance on OnyX and it said that my volume needs to be repaired. Even Disc Utility failed to finish and said that the "filesystem verify or repair failed."
The short of it, I need to put the Leopard disc in there and do a disc repair. However, is there a way, via firewire, where I could actually use my iMac's optical disc drive in place of the Macbook and connect via firewire, then do the disc repair? If so, what would be the specific way to do this?
Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Connect the two with a Firewire cable. Boot the MB into Target Disk Mode. It's drive should mount on your iMac's Desktop. You can then run Disk Utility and try repairing the drive in the MB.
You don't need to use the iMac's optical drive unless you have to install OS X onto the MB.

  • Can't use the other Hard Drive

A few days before that incident I had two hd showing up in System preferences (Startup Disk) but now I have only one hd. I used Disk Utility to erase my 2nd hard drive as MS-DOS (FAT) to run Windows 7 and since then, Only one HD is available but on my desktop I still had my second hard drive icon. I tried to re-erase it as Mac OS extended (Journaled) but still doesn't show up in the (Startup Disk) window. By accident in the (Disk Utilty) window, I think I merged the memory of my 2nd hard drive into the first hard drive and now when I try to split it into two partitions, an error message pops up saying '' The target disk is too small for this operation'' . Can someone help me please One HD showing up As you can see I've got 2 memory slots installedBut one HD is available Just under the second ASCBC, I had my other HD but since I merged it, it disappeared, How can I get my other memory slot working ? PLEASE

The top image indicating memory slots has NOTHING to do with your hard drive. That image illustrates the installed RAM. It appears that you have a single hard drive (STORAGE) with a capacity of 250GB on one partition that is full. You only have 16mb of storage left on that hard drive which is dangerously low.

  • Networking iMac w/ a Netbook to use the iMac optical drive

I have a new iMac and a new Netbook. The Netbook is running Windows XP, Home, SP3.
Netbooks do not come with optical drives.
I am trying to determine if it is even possible to network the two in such a way that I could access the iMac's optical drive from the Netbook in order to install software from a CD onto the Netbook.
Am I just wasting my time here or is this possible???
    Anyone know?

Boot into your BIOS and see what options there are. Some can be configured to use USB CDs, USB flash drives, I have one board (not Netbook obviously) with bootable eSATA.
And check out online forum for your machine. Took me a while to find TweakTown and others that had forum for my board.
