Can I use the HP Recovery partition after formatting and repartitioning the rest of the hard drive?

I recently had my HP Pavilion dv4 2145dx laptop (Windows 7 64-bit) go kerput.  The Geek Squad said that the motherboard died.  I've purchased another laptop, and I'm using that one for now, and I am using the hard drive from the old dv4 as an external.
I'm planning to keep using the hard drive from the old dv4 as an external for now, but I'd like to be able to fix the dv4 at some point in the future.  Here's the problem:  to get the most out of the old dv4's drive as an external, I'd like to repartition it so that there is one NTFS partition and one HFS+ partition.  That way I could use it easily with both my Mac and Windows machines.
But if I do that, I'm not sure if the HP Recovery image would still work.  If it didn't work, then if/when I get the old dv4 a new motherboard, I couldn't restore the OS from the Recovery partition.  This is a problem, because I didn't create Recovery Disks (stupid, I know - I'm definitely making them for the new machine).
So I'd like to do one of these two things:
1)  Create my dv4 Recovery Disks.  Can I do this if the dv4's drive is mounted in an external enclosure?
2)  Format and partition the dv4 drive (leaving the Recovery partition intact), and later recover the system from the Recovery partition.  Would the Recovery partition still work under those conditions?
Thanks for any help anyone's got.

Hi:
Anything you do to the C:\drive will render the recovery partition inoperable.
You won't be able to create a set of recovery disks unless the drive is operable in the notebook.
Can you still read all 25 characters of your W7 product key on the bottom of your busted notebook?
If so, you can do this...
If you can read the 25 character Microsoft windows 7 product key, you can download plain Windows 7 ISO files to burn to a DVD for the version of windows that came installed on your PC, and that is listed on the Microsoft COA sticker on your PC's case.
Burn the ISO using the Burn ISO option on your DVD burning program and burn at the slowest possible speed your program will allow. This will create a bootable DVD.
Or use the Windows 7 USB/DVD installation tool to compile the ISO file you download from Digital River. Link and instructions below. You need a 4 GB flash drive to use the USB method of compilation.
http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool
Use the 25 character product key on the PC to activate the installation.
The key will activate either a 32 or 64 bit installation.
Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.
Link to the W7 ISO file downloads is below.
http://www.mydigitallife.info/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-from-digital-river/
Or, you can probably still order a set of recovery disks for your notebook from HP.

  • HT201250 If I use Time Machine on my MacBook can I use the hard drive on the same MacBook as the back up drive ?

I want to use Time Machine but instead of using a hard drive outside of the MacBook, would I be able to use the hard drive that is in the computer?
Would I be able to use a memory stick ?

It defeats the purpose of having a backup if you keep it on the same drive. That's your safety if your drive fails.
Also, you should allow about double the space of the volume you are backing up.
EDIT: Time Machine does keep local snapshots on your drive

  • I back my music and photos from my windows laptop before it broke on a external hard drive . I just got a new mac book can I use the hard drive to put my wave files and JPEG files on to my mac book

My old lap top broke I save all my music what is wave and my pitches is jpeg on external hard drive
the old laptop was a window base laptop
so I got a new mac coming and I been told my hard drive won't won't on the mac and I lose all my photos and music
    any help
    thanks

If your external drive has the right ports, you should be able to plug it up to your Mac and copy over your photos and wav files. You'll probably (I don't know this for sure as it's been a long, long time since I've dealt with wav files) need to convert the wav files to MP3 or some other format (but I would try opening them directly from iTunes, first - wait a second... yes, iTunes will open wav files).
There are only a fixed number of ways that Windows drive can be formatted and a Mac can read (though not necessarily write) them all. So you should have no trouble with that.
    Good luck,

  • Can I use the hard drive for other stuff once I've Time Machined it?

Firstly, apologies if these questions have been answered elsewhere. I have searched but feel I need a post in its own right.
I've bought a new 1TB Western Digital 'My Passport' hard drive. I've plugged it in and it is busy creating a time machine back up right now. It is going to use about 60GB once done.
Will I be able to use the remaining 940GB when it's finished backing up?
Will my HD behave just like a regular USB storage device after this?
Will it work with my windows PC as well?
I have an older, smaller HD drive with backups of all my pictures/docs/music on. Can I easily transfer those onto my new hard drive?
Many thanks in advance for any answers that may be forthcoming.

Yes. However, this is not recommended. Time Machine makes duplicates of your entire system. Each identical file is only on disk once, but there can be many, many file and directory pointers. If you ever want to blow away your Time Machine drive and start a fresh one, it will take forever and then some to delete all those files. It is far easier to just erase the partition. If you have other files on there, you have to remember to move them elsewhere before erasing the partition.
I suggest giving Time Machine a 500 GB partition and using 500 GB for yourself.

    Yep
Will it work with my windows PC as well?
Only if you format the other partition as FAT or NTFS. There may be software you can get to make Windows understand the Mac HFS+ format, but I wouldn't want Windows near my Time Machine drive. Be aware that if you format as FAT, you may have trouble writing some Mac files to the volume.

Time Machine backups? In theory you probably could, but it wouldn't be worth the effort. Just copy those to your other partition.

  • How can my daughter use the hard drive in the Time Capsule ...

So, I am in Oklahoma and my daughter is in Tennessee...
She has a Time Capsule where the Wi-fi base station quit working, but the hard drive may be OK.
She bought an Airport Express to use as a wi-fi router.
    The question, then, is:
How can my daughter use the hard drive in the Time Capsule to do Time Machine backups?
Thank you very much for your insights.
    Roberto

It can be done but is very messy. That is assuming the TC is still functional which I kind of doubt.. the wifi is seldom the only thing that will die .. so whatever problems it has the wifi would be the least of it.
Anyway.. do a factory reset to get started.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
If the LED is not lit then the TC is dead, not just the wireless.
The setup for using the TC is explained in the bottom of this thread.
TC in a second local network.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4817218?tstart=30
The idea is to set the TC to provide router function.. and the computer plugged in by ethernet to as a second network.. but there are rules on how this is done which I have explained in that thread.
I notice that Mountain Lion deals better with order of network priority than Snow Leopard used to .. so it might not need to have manually set gateway and dns.. although I would still recommend it. It simply stops the second network causing issues.
It is much easier to simply purchase an external drive and plug that in.
It is cheaper, faster and more reliable than using the TC for TM anyway.
Plus a lot of the later machines no longer have ethernet ports.. and using dongles is far from neat.. although thunderbolt to ethernet is IMHO necessary accessory for anyone without ethernet.

My new LaCie external hard drive is 'seen' by my iMac and I can go into the Finder and open files and folders. I am using the hard drive for Time Machine back up. However Time Machine says it can't find the drive.
The same thing happened recently between Final Cut Express and my other LaCie external hard drive used as the Scratch disk. It fixed itself.
I've run out of ideas. Help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

I had files stored on a hard drive that were not on my Mac. I used the hard drive for my first Time Machine back up, but it was not enough hard drive space to finish. Now those stored files are gone. Is there any way I can recover them?  No, they were not part of previous Time Machine backups, and I have checked both the hard drive the documents were lost on and the new one that I now use for backups. Any suggestions would be helpful, as the lost files are old pictures that are gone forever. :[ Thanks!

    1. Yes, if both drives are formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    2. Reformat the drives if needed, open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, and remove the drive with the pictures from the list of items set to be excluded.

How can I remove the hard drive from an iMac g4 before recycling it?

There are take-apart guides online.  For example
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/imac_g4/imacg4_takeapart.html
However, you can also consider securely erasing the hard drive instead.  You can do this using a Mac OS X installation disc with a version that your iMac G4 can boot from the optical drive.  If this is a viable option, please post back (include Mac OS X version on installation disc).

  • Using the Hard Drive from my old iMac

I have just purchased a new 2.8 Intel core 2 duo iMac and was wondering if I could somehow use the hard drive from my old iMac.
What I have done is buy a case for the hard drive from my old iMac thus making it an external. The question that I have is that since it [the old hard drive] is running OS 10.4 will my new Intel iMac even recognize it.
I would like to somehow switch ALL my vast iTunes library from the old hard drive to my new Intel iMac without have to resort to making as many as 15 data disk. If such a thing is possible how do I go about doing so?
Another thing that I would like to do once my iTunes library is on my new Intel iMac is use the old hard drive [since it is 500GBs] as the platform for all my games and my publishing interest. Doing so would allow me to free up space that I could more readily use for other interest on the 350GB hard drive that my new iMac came with.
HOW do I go about wiping the old hard drive clean so that I can use it thus?
Thank you all for any and all help and insight that you might give me.

You might also consider connecting the two computers into a network, and then transferring the files you need, or even keep both computers online and use network sharing to access files from both computers.
In reference to your question, if you extract the hard drive from your old Mac and put it in an external case, your new Mac will read it no prob. (10.4 is compatible with 10.5). The hard drive can be formatted (wiped clean) using Disk Utility application (click Application, Utilities).
In terms of importing files from old to the new Mac, you might consider using using the automated OS X feature to transfer user files from another Mac.

  • Do I need startup discs to upgrade hardware on MacBook Pro or can I restore the hard drive from from a Time Machine backup?

do I need startup discs to upgrade hardware on MacBook Pro or can I restore the hard drive from from a Time Machine backup?

Ok, well go and grab a small 2.5" hard drive enclosure so you can put the new drive in & temporarily use it like an external hard drive.
Download Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper and make a bootable clone of your current HDD on the new HDD.
Once that's done you can test the clone by booting from it. To do this hold Optioni while booting to select the external (new) drive. If everything looks ok, you can go ahead and swap over the HDD's.
    So much easier.

  • I can not access the hard drive connected to my airport extreme!  Any thoughts?

I can not access the hard drive connected to my ariport extreme.  When I use the finder to connect a server and type in the IP of the a. extreme, 10.0.1.1 it does not work and I get an error message.
    Any thoughts.

Is the hard drive formatted for Mac in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?
If yes, you may need to use a powered USB hub since the USB port on the AirPort Extreme is under powered and it is often necessary to use a powered hub....even if the hard drive has its own power supply
If both items check out above.....have you checked Finder Preferences to make sure that "Connected Servers" will be displayed?
Finder Preferences > General > Show These Items on the Desktop > Connected Servers
Then with the Finder menus displayed at the top of the screen click the Go menu
Click Network and the AirPort Extreme icon should be displayed
Double click the icon to mount the drive on the desktop

It's on your Desktop, is it not? You cannot put it on the menubar through OS X although you may find third-party utilities that will. If you want it on the Desktop:
Select Preferences from the Finder's Finder menu and check the desired boxes:
Click on the Sidebar icon in the toolbar to set what you want displayed in the Sidebar.
