Can I use the MacBook Air Superdrive as an external CD reader?

Simply put my MBP's optical drive is shot and I don't have the £200 odd that is needed to repair it. So for now I've considered an external option and was told that I could use the MBA superdrive. However on plugging in, nothing happened, attempted to put in the disc and it was like there was no power in it.
Does anyone know whether it can be used as an external option or is the MBP finicky and will only read one drive at a time?

No, the Air Superdrive will not work for you. Sigh, i could have saved you the trouble of wasting money.
What you need, and what would work better is a Lacie Portable Firewire DVD+/-RW drive, which only costs £99 (including VAT or £85.02 ex. VAT, i assume you are in the U.K), and plus it also comes bundled with Toast 8 Titanium.
Go here and check it out http://www.lacie.com/uk/products/product.htm?pid=10985 .

  • Can I use the macbook air superdrive with my non server mac mini?

I recently removed the optical super drive from my early 2009 mac mini to switch to a 2 HD setup.  I have an opportunity to get a macbook air superdrive (external) for a really good deal, but I am unsure whether or not it will work.  The specs say that it will work with a min that has no optical drive, but does it matter if I removed the drive myself instead of buying the server version of the mini?

Ahhh, you did not say that you don't have one yet. Perhaps you should csll an Apple vendor in your area and ask. Although it is supposed to work with a Mini, I don't know about a Mini from 2009 since the optical drive was not released until the 2010 MBA came out, I believe.

  • Can two (or more) macbook air superdrives be used on mac mini

on the new (july 2011) mac mini, can I connect two or more of the macbook air superdrives?

    I agree with John.
We don't know how the ports are laid out, but if they're a pair (1-2)(3-4), I'd not plug both drives into (1-2) or (3-4). I'd  start with the outermost ones.
Please report back if it works.
And, I can't help but smile that you want to use two superdrives with the mini, because those of use who would have loved Apple to keep a superdrive in the 2011 mini, have been getting flack from those who love the omission, that the technology is obsolete, discs aren't used any more, time to move forward, ...

  • Can I use my Macbook Air with my apple TV?

I am useless with all the macbook jargon i have seen in other posts so need some simple help. I am operating on Lion 10.7.5. I have read that nwer software could help but i would like to know for certain before purcahsing the latest software.

Yes, but you must update to OS X Mavericks using the Mac App Store. When you do, you will see this icon in the menubar:
I hope I solved your question.

  • Does the new iMac coming in December have a dvd drive? If not can you use the Apple USB SuperDrive?

Does the new iMac coming in December have a dvd drive? If not can you use the Apple USB SuperDrive?

The soon to be released new iMacs don't have a DVD drive. I don't believe that Apple have updated their site to say their USB drive will work, but the expectation is that it will.
I watched the keynote and when Phil Schiller was presenting the new models I think he mentioned something about it working and he had one on the desk next to the iMac.
I'm going to check the keynote if it's still up and I'll update my post if I'm wrong.

Hello friends.. I have a similar question, in that I would like to purchase the 2TB TC for use as a NAS device, in addition to taking advantage of the Air Port extreme.. Then I could dump my Linksys router.
I was originally looking at a Synology NAS solution, but the TC seems like it can meet my needs.
I have a Synology NAS as well as the Time Capsule.  If you look at the 3.2 beta program, the Synology actually attempts to replicate TC functionality in that you can use it with Time Machine on your Mac.
I must say, Airport on the TC is definitely a nice feature!

In addition to the obvious feature of the backup, can I indeed also use the TC as a NAS drive to access from remote locations (example from the office)?
I'm surprised more people aren't using the TC as a dedicated NAS deviced.. I've searched high and low on forums around the web, and don't seem to see many people trying to use it as I've outlined.
I can't see why this wouldn't fufill my needs, and take the place of a separate NAS solution (like the Synology, or iOmega, Seagate, etc....)
Has anyone used this TC as such?
Yes, you can do this and it's something I've been trying to do, but I'm currently having issues.  I have another thread stating I consistently get "connection failed" messages.  I'm basically storing my music/photo/video files on the TC and keeping my Mac hard drive fairly lean.  In terms of NAS functionality, the TC is very basic.  Synology/QNAP and others have a lot more features so don't rule them out.

how can i use the airport time capsule as a external hard drive?

Why do you recommend not place things like iTunes libraries or photo libraries on the drive? It was what I am looking for...
I suggest that you ask the experts over in the iPhoto Support Community about their opinions on placing an iPhoto or Aperture library on the Time Capsule....even if you plan to use a wired connection for your Mac and the Time Capsule.
But, if Terrence Devlin answers, be prepared for a lecture about why you should not ever do this.
If you place the iTunes library on the Time Capsule, be prepared for iTunes to give you messages about not being able to find the library.
In addtion, LaPastenague has the answer for you in a nutshell......corruption problems.
Bottom line....the Time Capsule is for your backups.....not "everyday" files and especially not libraries.

  • I want to use my Macbook Air 2011 as an external disk for my iMac 2011. I connected the two with a Thunderbolt cable and when starting the MacBook Air I pressed "T" and it worked except with Office documents. Can anybody help?

I want to use my MacBook Air as an external disk to my iMac. I talked to Apple care and we solved it by connecting a Thunderbolt cable between the two computers. I then turn on the MacBook Air while pressing the "T" and it works. I can sit and work on my iMac and grab/change/save the files that are in my MacBook Air EXCEPT for the Microsoft Office files. I called Microsoft and they can't solve it. They say it might be a problem with the Thunderbolt cable. Has anybody have this problem?
Both computers are 2011 and they both have Office 2011.
    Thanks in advance,
    Alejandra

For Word it says "Word cannot open this document. The document might be in use, the document might not be a valid Word document, or the file name might contain invalid characters (for example, /)"
For Excel it says "the file could not be found. Check te spelling of the filename, and verify that the file location is correct. If you are trying to open the file from your list of most recently used files on the File menu, make sure hat the file has not been renamed, moved or deleted.
I tried this with many different documents, and I always get the same message.

  • Can I use my Macbook Air 13" mid 2013 with plugging charger even at 100 % battery full charge?

I can't decide whether using My Macbook Air 13" mid 2013 with charging power adapter connected even though it is fully charged Or using Macbook Air with unplugging charger after fully charged. Please advice me to maintain my Macbook's battery at good condition.

It will not hurt it as long as you do not leave it on the charger for an extensive period of time (say, days).

  • Can you overcharge the Macbook Air?

I was always told with my older PC latops that "leaving it plugged in all day will drain the battery faster" and stuff like that. Nowadays, devices such as the iDevices, PSP, Vita, and Nintendo's handhelds cannot be overcharged because the charge feature stops and the device runs off of AC...but, is the Macbook Air like that too? And since I'm asking, are all Macbooks like that or is it still bad to "leave them plugged in all day" and whatnot. I like having my Air at work with me on my desk to listen to music and movies on iTunes (no speakers on my work PC), but I'm slightly paranoid about the battery..  Thanks guys.

Check this Web site and the links from it for everything you'd ever want to know about batteries. The short form is this: The battery cannot be over charged. Plug it in and keep it plugged in so that when you go off on the road it has a full charge. When you have depleted about 80% of the charge you'll get a warning that you are on reserve power and it is time to start looking for a power plug. Do not drain the battery 100%. While you cannot overcharge the battery it isn't good to keep it plugged in all the time. At the very least unplug it and use the battery at least once or twice a month.
Following the above advice which came from Apple my 2009 MBP battery still keeps better than 80% of its charge and has 112 cycles used. Given its age I expect the battery will probably need to be replaced before long but I'm amazed that it is doing this well after nearly 5 years of use.

  • Can I use my MacBook Air as a keyboard on my iMAC?

My new iMAC arrived with a USB keyboard that is dead. Bad USB ports ruled out, until I receive the new USB keyboard can I use the MBAir as a keyboard? If so, how? thanks.

  • Can I use my macbook air to view video from my camcorder

I have a Panasonic HDC S9 HD digital vide camera, which has a mini HDMI port to coonect to an external monitor to view playback directly from the camera
I have a Macbook Air 13" bought 5 months ago
I have bought a thunderbolt to HDMI cable and have used that to connect the Air to the video camera via HDMI
But I dont see how to see the playback from the camera on the air.
    Any ideas?
I am hoping that I am not about to be told that the Air will only export video via the thunderbolt port and will not allow video IN to show on the Air screen... please help?
    Many thanks

    Thanks SP
But I need to do something more immediate than that.
One of the things my partner does is to advise her clients on their presentation skills. So she wants to video them doing a presnettation to her, and then immediatley play it back so they can both look at it whilst she critiques it.
There is no time to transfer video files and move between aplications.
If we connect the video camer via HDMI to the TV, we can play back clips on the TV directly from the camera - no need for data transfers
What I want to do is use the Air as the TV monitor for this playback so she can do this on client site in any room with her own equipment - not needing a TV
I had hoped that buying the thunderbolt to HDMI lead would enable the Air to act as the out put monitor
But I cannot see how to get that to work
