Can I use the same apple ID on my iphone and ipod touch

I have been successfully using the same apple ID on itunes, my iphone and ipod touch
I upgraded both my ihpone and ipod to iOS5 and now both devices are telling me that my apple ID is already being used when I try to sign in
any ideas? I have always used the same ID so I can have purchased apps on both devices
can I carry on doing this now icloud has been launched? I'm a bit confused!

My husband and I use the same apple id and itunes accounts for each of our phones. His is an Iphone 4 and mine is an 4s. After this last update we are having trouble with his texting.
How do we go about separating our account into two accounts with the same apps and itunes.

You would need to create a new Apple ID and re-download and/or repurchase any apps.
However, if it's just a matter of texting, you can go to Settings -> Messages -> Send & Recieve and check which addresses each phone should receive iMessages addressed to.

What isn't obvious is that you can use different Apple IDs for different functions on your iPhone; for example iCloud, iTunes & App Stores, Game Center, iMessage and FaceTime can all have different Apple IDs from each other.
If you use the same Apple ID for Find my iPhone then both phone's locations will show up at https://icloud.com/find. Which can be good or bad, depending on your situation.
If you use the same Apple ID for iTunes & App Stores you can have the same apps and music on both phones; some or all of them.
You probably want different Apple IDs for iMessage and FaceTime; otherwise, you will get each other's messages
Also different for Game Center.

How can I use the same apple id on 2 iphones yet have the owner contact different?

My husband and I both share apps, contacts, calendars, etc and use same apple id...We both own iPhone 5's. When we each set up our iphones, on setting in siri setting and mail, contacts, calendars setting we each put contact for our info... Well the problem is that if I change mine to my info it changes it to his, and same if he changes it to his name on his iphone it changes 'my info' on my iPhone's setting.... so when using siri or mail... we cant identify each phone.... So can we still use same apple id and have separate "my info" settings.....

Settings > iCloud > Shut off anything you don't want shared
Long term solution (actual solution)
You need seperate Apple IDs for iCloud. iTunes and iCloud are not the same.
Create a new Apple ID > https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/
On one of the devices go Settings > iCloud > Delete Account > Sign in with the new Apple ID
This will seperate your Contacts, Calendars, Messages etc.
You both can continue to use the same Apple ID for iTunes and share apps and music

used the same apple id on two iphones, and one of them i gave away. I signed out and deleted all the data that is connected to me. But the person who has my iphone, can see all imessages i get or send. And my apple id always appears on that phone... And of course when that person sends messages, it shows that it was sent from my email or phone. So is there a solution?

He has to un-sing of iCloud, iMessage and FaceTime and of course you have to change your Apple ID password!

I am just a little confused about the way that you asked thes questions. But here is my take.
1. Yes - You can use two Apple ID's on an iPad.
2. You can use the same Apple ID on up to 10 total devices - but there is a five computer limit in that total of 10 devices.
3. If you use one ID for some things and then use the family ID to download past purchases for free - you will lock themselves out of the other ID for 90 days.
4. When you download a past purchase on an iDevice using a different ID - you associate that device with that ID and you are locked into that ID only for 90 days.
