Can Illustrator CS mask layers without grouping them?

I draw a lot of complex maps using Illustrator 8 in preference to higher versions. I customarily use a top layer clipping path to mask out the edges and "crop" the image.
The advantage of Illustrator 8 is that the clipped artwork still rests on its respective layers, allowing me to turn on/turn off whichever layers I desire, while still maintaining the mask.
As far as I can tell, later versions automatically group (and thus place on the top layer) all items that are masked by the clipping path, meaning that my map layers no longer exist, and the map has lost its funtionality.
I've been using version 8 for years despite having access to CS but now my company is losing 8 and moving over exclusively to CS. I can't figure out an effective way to maintain the same layer functionality in masked artwork in Illustrator CS.
The mass of nested layers and sub-layers for each and every object has me lost. It seems over complicated but doesn't offer me anything I can use, instead removing the ability to do what I used to do.
Is there any way I can still mask my artwork and maintain ungrouped layer functionality in Illustrator CS?

Any object on a parent layer can mask child layers. Here I selected the topmost path and chose Make Clipping mask from the Layers flyout menu. Masked items remain on their own child layers. If I use the Selection tool (black arrow) and click on a tree, only the tree is selected.
The interface is surprisingly buggy, even for Illustrator. If it's not working, try Cutting and Pasting in front to get Illustrator to figure out it can use the path for a mask.

I am making a book in Aperture 3. I want to change some of the pages that I have put together, and want to remove some of the photos from some of the pages, to put them on another page. How can I remove the photos without deleting them from the album?

As a follow-up, I have found that clicking on the photo in the book also highlights the photo on the strip below. So, if you then hit delete, you will delete the photo from both the book page and the album (which is the book, the way I have it set up). If you only want to delete it from the book page, you then have to un-click the photo on the strip below, or both will be deleted. This seems unwieldy. I deleted 6 photos from a page and found all of them gone from the album. The only way that I can see to keep them in the album is to then unselect them from the bottom strip after selecting them fro the page. This seems to call for an extra step.

Can I rotate masked Layers in After Effects CS6

I'm having trouble finding out how to rotate masked layers or do I have to erase the Masks and using the pen tool to cut a rotated version of them.

You can rotate the layer: use the rotate tool, or you can scrub the numerical values in the rotation property in the timeline, or enter numerical values via the keyboard.
You can rotate the mask: double-click on the layer, double-click on the mask, and rotate it at the corners.

Can I perform masking & layers for HDR image in Aperture 2 _RAW images

Can I do post processing such as masking & layers like one do to to create HDR image.
If so...
I generally take in RAW format. In Photoshop or Photomatix the HDR post processing is done in JPG. [I do not own Photoshop or Photomatix]. Do I have to save it as JPG or take my photos in JPG to get the above done in Aperture 2?
Will Aperture 2 handle JPG to create HDR image?

i only very recently paid for photomatix (pmx) and started to use it....... i like it
eish, paid $129 from their website.......... see it (essentials?) is 29$ from app store
"real" hdr multiple exposures are possible with pmx as well as single image "tone mapped" files
aperture 2 or 3 do not offer hdr post processing, i think, photoshop *** compared to pmx (more tweaking possible)
if you use pmx one can use raw or jpg files, i do not think it makes a difference to the outcome
i use it as a stand alone app, BUT i think it could be used as a plug in... why bother?
one can save pmx files as tiff or jpg

ps- do not destroy the original files!, it's easy enough to re-convert them to hdr/anything again later
pps- you can download pmx as a try out for free, but they post a watermark on the final result, it's worth the experiment, at least you know what you are dealing with.... (available from their website), but it looks like the app store option is cool!... check out both

How can apple put out things without checking them!

I can't believe all the issues that have happened with iTunes 7... I'm in the same boat as many - my iPod wont respond at all when connected to the comp, after working fine.
But I dont understand how they can release programs without checking them....
Even with the iPod itself.... so many times my ipod wont switch on after a day (this is before iTunes 7), making me have to press MENU. Also, it suddenly freezes.
The software doesnt seem solid at all. I dont know how a company like this with such a successful product can have second-rate software on it and being released!
Thats my vent for the day!

Resizing multiple objects without grouping them

In AppleWorks Draw one could just band or shift select a group of objects and resize them.
Is there a way of doing this in Pages without having to group everything first?

Selling GS3 for G4. Can I reinstall the Apps without paying them again?

I'm thinking about selling the old GS3 for the new G4.
1) Can I deinstall all the Apps from GS3 and reinstall them on the new G4 without having to pay the Apps all over again?

Can I import bookmarks/favorites WITHOUT having them reorganized the way FF wants them?

This issue seems common to every browser, but it's maddening to me and has prevented me from changing browsers before, but I'm really tired of IE.
I have a lot of folders with bookmarks, and within those folders are other folders with bookmarks. The folders are in the order I want them in, as are their contents. After importing, everything has been alphabetized, and the whole structure has become worthless to me. Dragging and dropping a couple of hundred items individually is not what I want to do. Is there a way to import things exactly as they are? Would this be a logical option to have for a feature like this?

You can export the favorites in IE to an HTML file and import this file in the Firefox Bookmarks Manager.
If you do not have the menu bar in IE then right-click the toolbar at the top to enable the Menu Bar.

Can I have an array of controls without having them in the array front panel holder?

I would like to link a number of boolean control buttons in an array without grouping them on the front panel the way it does when you make an array and then put in a boolean control.
Here's the background:
I have 8 linear motors controlled by CANbus, and so each button type (Move, Stop, Home, etc) is duplicated 8 fold. I have an event structure that is currently triggered with a separate case for EVERY button with only a very small difference in the code inside each case. Ideally I could have the buttons in arrays and then check the new array value against the old value on a value change event. The alternative for me is to have each case handle the 8 buttons (with a Mouse Down? filter event) and then use the Boolean.Text value from the CtlRef and search an array of all Boolean.Text Values for the 8 buttons to see which name matches and process accordingly. I have something like 200 buttons, so making the arrays of Boolean.Text values from the reference nodes is WAY too time consuming as I have to go through like 5 levels of right click menus. Any suggestions?

You might consider using clusters on the front panel. Create a type def'd cluster that has all the boolean controls for 1 channel. You can drop 8 of these on the front panel and the event structure can detect a change in a cluster. Easy to convert cluster to array behind the scenes. Remember that order of cluster determines index of value in array.

How to execute web applications without deploying them?

How can I execute web applications without deploying them (without mentioning them in the server.xml)?
I have an IWS 6.1 SP1 installed with default parameters (JES). I would like that a posix user could execute his own web application without administrator collaboration.
Does it exist some sort of "autodeploy" like in tomcat?
(I know about the invoker mapping in default-web.xml, just I don't realy understand what does it eventuate. I tried to unzip webapps-simple.war in the directory $IWS_SERVER_HOME/webapps/$instance_name/servlet/tmp/
but the http://a.a.tg/servlet/tmp request failed:
javax.servlet.ServletException: WEB2784: Wrapper cannot find servlet class tmp or a class it depends on

How can I solve this? Users should have write permission to the directories in the classpath to put their servlet.class files into? Bad idea...

Do as many of the rest of us do, until this behavior is changed (if ever). Eport your WEb gallery to your Hd and use an FTP client, there are so many, including Drreamweaver's, and Shareware ones, and upload just the relevant files/folders. Some can even check and do this for you.

View setting without changing them

Using Airport Utility, how can I check my settings without changing them. For example, I would like to see if I am at 5 Ghz. Will going through the screens change anything?

The best way to look is to use the "manual" setup option. If you do accidentally change something just tell the Airport utility not to save the settings when asked.

You can use iCloud:
Step 1. Log into www.icloud.com using your Apple ID.
Step 2. Click on Contacts and then click the groups ribbon (the red icon with two people) which is on the left-hand page when viewing All Contacts.
Step 3. The left page changes to a list of Groups (only those groups stored in iCloud are shown). Click the + button at the bottom to add a new group.
Step 4. Type a name for the new group and press Enter to save it. To change it after this, double-click its entry in the groups list.
Step 5. To add contacts to the new group, click on the All Contacts group and locate the first person to be added (you can use the search bar to find them quickly).
Step 6. Drag their name on top of the new group and drop it to add it to that group.
Step 7. To add more contacts, repeat steps 5 and 6, but you can add multiple contacts at once by pressing Ctrl (on a PC) or Command (on a Mac) and clicking on each contact in the list that you wish to select. Then, drag one of the highlighted names to the new group and they will all be added.
It's possible to add names to more than one group, and you can create as many groups as you like.
Step 8. Launch the Contacts app on your device (iPhone, iPod touch or iPad) and you should see the new group appear almost immediately - as long as you have an internet connection.
Until Apple builds in a function to create groups directly within the Contacts app, this is the best way to do it.

How to align layers without clipping masks?

Hi,
I would like to (left) align some layers that are made up of placed photos with clipping masks applied. When invoking the "left" align command Adobe Illustrator CS3 aligns everything bases on the invisible boundaries of the clipping masks instead of the desired results of the clipping masks themselves. Hey, thanks for your tip :)
I managed to solve the problem by drilling down into the nested hierarchy and selecting only the clipping masks and successfully aligning those irrespective of their parent layers. Its also a bit laborious which makes one wish that there were the possibility / feature to not only select artwork based on "same" stroke / fills etc but even by similar layer names. If that had been possible, I could have easily selected one Clipping Mask and then selected all the others based on name similarity without having to unfold all the nested hierarchies to get to all the others one by one.
