Can iMovie edit 1080P MP4

Can it ?

I ACTUALLY ANSWERED MY OWN QUESTION -- YES, iMOVIE CAN BOTH IMPORT AND EDIT FILES IMPORTED DIRECTLY FROM SONY MINI-DVD CAMCORDERS (WITHOUT ADDITIONAL SOFTWARE). The iMAC recognized the camcorder right away when I played the mini-DVD within the camcorder and plugged in via the Sony-provided USB cable.
HAVING SAID THAT, I HAVE JUST POSTED A SEPARATE QUESTION -- WHAT ARE THE BEST SETTINGS (BOTH IMPORTING TO iMOVIE AND SHARING/EXPORTING TO iDVD) FOR OPTIMIZING THE QUALITY OF AN iMOVIE PROJECT SHARED WITH iDVD (AND, THEN, FOR RENDERING WITHIN iDVD?)

  • Can iMovie edit 50p footage?

Okay, so i don't yet have my Mac but am getting it soon, if everything goes right. So here's my question(s).
Can imovie edit footage in 720p 50 fps I have a Canon 600D and are in a PAL region so 60fps won't do, or do i have to convert it?
Also, i know that Final Cut Pro X cannot work with the H.264 codec, so can imove or again do i have to convert?
One last question, with this brand-spanking-new 50p footage, i was planing to slow it down within iMove, but i have read somewhere that all imovie does is skip frames not double or triple the time that it is played over like most slow motions, or do i need to buy FCP X for this?
    Thanks

Great video btw, I still have a few questions though.
First of all how did you import and edit the 50p footage as a poster mentioned above that iMovie does not natively support 50p footage import an editing.
Finally how did you achieve such fluid slow motion, did you find a way to do 'real' slomotion as in extending the played time of footage (therefore slowing sown without skipping frames) or the meathod of just skipping frames. All using iMovie or ther free software available on a mac.
    Thanks

  • Can iMovie edit and save in AVCHD format?

I'm interested in getting the Sony hdr-cx550v camcorder and I was wondering if I will have any compatibility issues with my MB Pro

iMovie can neither edit or export AVCHD, but then it doesn't need to. It will import AVCHD and convert it into AIC which is an editable format, it will then export to AVC which can be played on the majority of modern devices. Unless you have some specific purpose to create AVCHD content Im not sure why you would want to.

  • Can I edit 1080p 60 50mbps MXF files In PP CS4?

Can I import 1080p 60 50mbps MXF files? The only setting I see in Premiere CS4 is the DVCProHD setting for 1080 60. When I open that type of session and then try to import an MXF file Premiere errors with the following.
File Import Error: File video dimensions (width/height) too large. I guess that means I can't do this in Premiere?

Loooooooong shot: What happens if you change the extension to .avi?

  • Can iMovie edit MPEG-2?

I have two MPEG-2 files I create don Windows and want to edit in iMovie 8 on my Intel Mac Pro. The help states it only imports Mpeg-4 but elsewhere the help states it can handle MPEG-2. I can't import them into iMovie so what format would iMovie accept from a Windows PC?
    Thx
    Kevin

I can't import them into iMovie so what format would iMovie accept from a Windows PC?
The DV standard would likely be the most "universal" format. Other acceptable formats would be Apple Intermediate Codec, MPEG-4, H.264, Motion-JPEG, etc. As to audio, I would stick with AAC (must use acceptable sampling/data rate combinations), AIFF, Uncompressed, etc.
The help states it only imports Mpeg-4 but elsewhere the help states it can handle MPEG-2.
The camcorder import option will sometimes import MPEG-2 formats if the content can be imaged to appear as HDD, DVD, or Memory Card camcorder content. For most, this proposition is somewhat "iffy" while for others it seems to work fine. My usual preference would be would be to convert the various "muxed" MPEG format and/or M2V/AC3 files manually using an MPEG-based, third-party application or QT Pro for M2V/AIFF elementary streams (or similar frame-to-frame formats).

  • What video formats can iMovie edit?

I was wondering what video formats iMovie can edit? Such as mpeg 2, mpeg 4, etc...
the specific reason I'm asing is that I'm considering having some vhs tapes converted to DVD's, which I'm assuming would convert them to mpeg 2...and was wondering if they would be editable in iMovie?

    Hi Vapor_action:
    Stop!
Seriously-you will be MUCH better off if you have them convert them to DV tape for import to iMovie. DVD uses a different compression and it is a real pain to get them into iMovie. In fact, it is easier to get the VHS to iMovie than DVD in my opinion.

  • Can now with imovie 1.2.2 and iOS5 edit 1080p high definition videos from DSLR cameras like the EOS 5D Mark II on ipad 2?

Can now with imovie 1.2.2 and iOS5 edit 1080p high definition video from DSLR cameras like the EOS 5D Mark II on ipad 2?.
That would be great, you would open the door to professional video editing ipad 2. Is there an accepted camera list?.

There does not appear to be a list yet.

  • Can I import and edit 1080p and 720p in imovie 11

I just got a Sony NX 70u camcorder. First tests with 1080 60i easily edited in imovie 11. Eventually I want to film in either 1080 60p or 720 60p. I have never done that since this is the first camcorder I owned that has those files as an option. I know the 60p will be more work for the computer. Can I import the 60p files into imovie 11 without any other software and can I edit those files just as easily as the 60i? I have a 21.5" mac 2.7Ghz Intel core 5i and 8 GB of memory.

I should add one more thing.
I think your request is a reasonable one. It would be nice if iMovie would support 60P since more and more cameras have this feature. You can click iMovie/Provide Feedback and tell Apple that you would like this feature added.
If I had to guess why iMovie has not added support for 60P in iMovie, it would that  they would need to make it easy for the average consumer to understand how they can import 60P but output (Share) only 30P.

  • TA22875 Why can't I drag MP4 Files into Imovie?

I'm trying to frag MP4 files into I Movie and when I release the mouse it just returns them to where they came.

    OK
We here are not Apple or employed by them - the thoughts and wisdom of Apple is very occult to many of us !
We are as You - Users and trying to be of help for other users !
The thing is - I don't know about Codecs, and please take this the right way when I say - I'm not interested in Codecs.
I just want to drag my movie files taken in whatever format I take them in and drag them into Imovie to work on them.
mp4 is a fairly common format?
then I have very little possibility to be of help - as I only can guide You a bit of the way to understand and work around this Problem - I never denied it to be.
But it seems that every Camera company makes there own solutions and to make Video editing programs or DVD authoring ones that can use every strange Video Codec availably - is impossibly - Not even FinalCut or Avid or Adobe Premiere can do this.
.mp4 - is no more Video Codec as any folder or hard disk - and tell that my material is on a hard disk, doesn't help us in understanding where it goes wrong.
So if You want to get this to work - then You need to set of a minimum of interest in howto get it right.
    To find out the Codec
    • Open the file with QuickTime-Player (as it can open many many more Codecs than iMovie can use)
    • here open Inspector [cmd+I] and read
    Video Format (Codec) : nnnnnnnnnnnnn
Frames per second : YY.yy fps
    What does they say ?
If You feel offended and don't want - There is no solution as I know of.
AND - I have no intention to offend at any cost - but need info (and so does the others here too) to be able to reach out a hand
Yours wanting to be of more help - Bengt W

  • How can you edit a previously burned DVD from an older iMovie app?

I converted VHS home movies to DVD years ago on the origonal iMovie app.  How can I edit those DVD's now?  Do I need a third party app to convert the DVD files for use in the new iMovie?

Yes, you need to 'reverse engineer' the highly compressed mpeg2 format of the DVDs.
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • Can't edit pics in iMovie

Im trying til edit a photo in imovie (ken burns effect).  When i mark the clip, and push the ken burns button, i cant move the start and stop point .  Can anyone help?

    Hi ivdemark,
If you see above, I read the iMovie support.
It says that the titles that you can't edit are in gold, while the titles you can edit are in blue. This title is in blue.
The options are there, they are just greyed out.
Below is a full screen shot. Does this help show the issue?

  • Can't edit titles in iMovie

I want to edit my theme title in iMovie (v 10.0.02) so that I can put the text on more than one line but the options are all greyed out
I've read the help section on this (http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2212) but I don't have the ability to click on the font, size, alignment etc tools. I can see them, they are just completely unclickable.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Mark
Was just looking for the answer to this exact question and I just found something that worked for me so don't know if it might be of use to you or you might have already solved your problem!  Basically when I was in iMovie and I clicked to import movies from the computer into iMovie and I found the clip I wanted to import, there are a few options.  I think it asked which Event I wanted to add it to but most importantly it asked me what file size I wanted...I had originally been clicking Large because it advised me to because it reduces the file size...but just on a chance there I selected 'Full - Original' for size and it imported perfectly into iMovie in it's original vertical form!
    Hope this helps!
    Bianca
