My Macbook Pro 15" i7 of early 2011 seems to have a major problem related to the logic board.
in a nutshell, in case you don't have time to read the details:
The computer stopped starting up after quite a few restarts, AHT, PRAM reset, safe boots, new RAM and new SSD. This all happened withing 3 days.
Apple service guys will look at it tomorrow, but they already said it's most likely logic board failure and will need replacement.
the long story:
symptoms I faced along the way:
- less than two weeks ago, screen started freezing forcing me to force-shut down.
- started repeating within hours, occasionally giving Kernel Panic message.
- within a day, frozen screens had several varieties which would either come after a few minutes of working or at startup: blue screen with vertical bars of different shade blue, or same with yellow tones, or the last seen screen with a couple inches of the of the right side of screen having shifted to the left side with a thick black bar in between the two (i could still move the mouse for a while but not able to click).
- started also having sessions where the computer would not start up at all (blue screen or gray screen with wheel turning)
- in between these steps I ran the computer on safe mode mostly successfully, did Apple Hardware Test 3 times with nothing wrong diagnosed (took 18 mins each), I did PRAM reset a few times too
- i tested these with different peripherals and power cable attached and not attached (normally i have a USB external and one or rarely two firewire drives attached for my video and photo work).
I realized that the computer would still be working after the freeze too. I use the MBPro to share internet for my iPhone and while it was frozen I still had internet.
I was following the suggestions on these forums to diagnose the problem.
Some suggested that it could be the RAM.
Coincidentally, the new 16 GB RAM that i had ordered came with the 246GB SSD just then.
As warranty ended already some months ago, I did the replacement with my dad who is an electrician and would know where to touch where not to.
The computer came back to life, super fast with the new SSD. I installed Mac OS X on it, set up the older HDD which I placed in place of the old DVD drive and started moving files around to configure my stysem.
after several hours the screen freezing came back again.
then after repeating the above steps of AHT (which took 2 hours), PRAM etc, it stopped starting up. It won't start anymore. Freezes in the early blue screen.
Just before new year's, I took it to Apple Service in a local store. They said they will have to look at it thoroughly after the 3rd (tomorrow). But the guy said the symptoms which I wrote above pretty much tell already that the logic board is dead.
Can it die in a slow manner like this?
It will cost me at least 750$ and I am not even sure if shipment and labor is included in this (I live in Cyprus). This is a very expensive price to pay for a relatively new machine for which I already paid over $2000 when I bought it 18 months ago.
I read Apple has a tendency to call all such symptoms a 'dead logic board' and just rip people off unfairly. I am aware this was mostly for 2007 and 2008 models but I worry they would still do it. I just spent my savings for the SSD and new RAM. So this is a major bummer.
What would you all suggest for me to try? How should I talk to the Apple Service guys?
is it better to just sell this 'as is' and try to get a new or properly working pre-owned one?

Sometimes some posts just seem to slip through the cracks... if you're taking your machine to an Apple Authorized Service Provider, and they simply 'reconnected' the logic board and you're still having problems, it sounds as if you need to get the logic board replaced. Since you're out of warranty and you, apparently didn't purchase the AppleCare extended warranty, the repair folks will charge you for a logic board replacement.
$750 sounds a little steep, but if that's what it costs then it doesn't seem as if you've an alternative but to pay the price. I don't know about Cyprus, but I do know that in the US there is an Apple flat rate repair pricing scheme in which Apple will repair anything on the machine for less than $350. You might want to look at the article and ask one of the managers about this program and whether or not you could get the 'deal'.
Good luck - sorry that you're having such a bad experience. Just let it be a lesson to always purchase AppleCare - particularly with Apple notebooks.

You will need the iTunes Library.itl file which generally lives in ~/Music/iTunes/. You can recover this from the backups you were making before the HDD died. Otherwise, you cannot recreate the library.

No it is not normal nor it is a gamble. It will be a shame if anyone within Apple thinks that you were gambling on the quality of their products by not buying an extended warranty.
When someone buys a machine like a MacBook Pro from Apple you are not gambling with quality. But investing by forking out a higher amount of money than people do find less expensive solutions. This is, of course, a personal choose.
When a computer dies within two years anyone can see that the machine was not build for such a period and therefore it is not more than reasonable to have it repaired or replaced on the costs of the manufacturer.
In growing amount of (European) countries customers are protected against the approach of limited warranty. Apart from the one year warranty, people are entitled to have a device (in your case a computer) on which they can rely on for many years, unless stated differently (except for wear and tear for which a manufacturer is not responsible for).
Buying an extended warranty (as a warranty against a failure of the product) is no more than a commercial exploitation against which consumers should be protected. Which only can be achieved through proper legislation in the country you live in.

Do you mean black and white or do you mean grayscale?
If you mean grayscale, then the Apple ColorSync Utility lets you build a filter that you apply in the PDF export interface or pick as a prebuilt filter that has already been inserted into the PDF export interface.
There is a prebuilt filter for the Generic Grayscale Profile or if you build your own filter in the ColorSync Utility with your own ICC package you can determine which level of gray you want and which classes of object you want the filter to apply to.
Basically, the ColorSync Utility functions as a colour server for PDF. If you know the Apple ColorSync Plugins for Adobe Photoshop 3-4-5, then the colour server functionality of the ColorSync Utility is simply the same thing applied to PDF rather than to raster images only.

You can add it to any unibody MacBook Pro in the optical drive bay, if you can get along without an optical drive and you aren't worried about voiding the warranty (or if the machine you buy isn't under warranty). You can't add it to a Macbook Air, Mac Mini, or iMac, but you can easily put it into a Mac Pro. And of course with any Mac you can put it into an external enclosure and use it as an external drive.

Logic board died twice

Sorry in advance for the long post.
In may right before i moved to Venezuela, I bought the then very new intel mac book. I used it for a month, and one day it wouldn't boot. I brought it to the mac store i was surprised to find in my city, and they agreed it was under warranty and essayed to fix it. It took two months, during which they said that they didn't have the necessary parts (logic board) on hand because the intel mac book had not yet launched in South America. I wasn't happy about it, but it seemed plausible.
Fast forward 2 months, and it happens again. I brought it in for service on Nov. 11 and still don't have it. Apparently the part is held up in customs. They are unflaggingly polite and seem genuinely to want to help, but they just can't get the part. Customs is, of course, a corrupt bureaucratic nightmare, but still. I asked if it was a matter of greasing a customs agent, but they don't know as they rely on a courier service. I asked if i'm the only person in this boat, and they said no. I asked if i could just get a new one, and they said no. I asked if they could cannibalize the part from one of their unsold stock and replace that if it ever comes in and they said no. I didn't really expect them to go for either of those options, but I tried. To be clear, they were very helpful and showed me the incident history, that they'd checked the machine and ordered the part on nov 10 and it had shipped on the 15th, so i don't have any problems with the macstore employees, except the fact that I always have to be proactive about finding out what's going on.
What happened the first time is that the hard disc had been corrupted, according to them, so i got a brand new installation on a 60gig drive and $50 credit, since they didn't have a replacement 80gig. I'm sure that's what's going to happen again, so is it too much for me to demand that they give me a new one, as I suspect a bad motherboard is somehow burning out these logic boards, because reading through here, this doesn't seem to be a common problem. I feel particularly burned as an early adopter, who has only been able to use the thing 3 months out of the 8 i've owned it. I'm very afraid this is going to happen when i'm out of warranty and then i'll be SOL.
In Mid December a friend brought me down old powerbook, a g4 256 meg, so i'm online, but it's nowhere near powerful enough to do what i need, and i don't want to spend upgrading a stopgap.
I've been looking for a way to ask apple usa about this, but none of their online support options seem to fit and i'm not going to pay international rates to spend hours on hold.
This is certainly the last time I buy the first rev of anything by apple and barring a quick satisfactory resolution the last time i buy anything apple at all.
Again sorry for the long post and if this is not the appropriate forum, but i don't see any better.

conclusion, which just doesn't seem to follow from
the facts.
OK, what i should have been more clear about is that this is an _Apple Store_, huge Apple logo out front, employees in black shirts with white logos, the whole bit. My support incident is in the apple support system. Apple knows i've been without my new computer for more than 10 weeks, and they've done nothing about it. Noone _at Apple_ is looking at the warranty incidents and saying Gee, customers are without their new computers for months at a time. Perhaps we ought to a) address the problem and b) contact the affected customers with updates, condolences, gift certificates, whatever.
Seems to me your biggest problem is that you live in
a country hostile to the US, which probably explains
why shipments from the US are so massively delayed.
The politics are irrelevant, trust me.
Why does there have to be a shipment. Why don't they have the part? They are selling these exact same computers. They aren't saying, 'Oh, and if something goes wrong, there's a monthslong turnaround on any repair requiring a part. It took 2 months the first time. why didn't someone immediately order a small pile of these things, and then keep enough inventory in stock. Why are they ordering parts one at a time internationally?

A: They didn't figure the defect rate correctly and stocked too few. Apple's fault.
B: They did figure the defect rate correctly, but gave customer service the shaft in favor of sales. They don't have a 3 month wait for new ipods, i can tell you that. I could have bought the exact same model of computer they can't fix anytime in the last 10 weeks. Apple's fault.
C: They didn't do due diligence on customs etc. before opening a store here. that seems unlikely. And, again, they get the video ipods through customs somehow. but that would still be Apple's fault.
D: They just can't manage inventory. Guess who's fault.
Why hasn't someone who can authorize these things been made aware and made a decision to use the unsold new stock to either fix or replace my computer. It has been more than 10 weeks.
Bottom line is they sold me a computer and told me i could get it fixed at any Apple store worldwide. They literally warranted that was the case with their warranty. They are unable or unwilling to fulfill their obligation. They have failed to live up to their end of the deal. They took my $1300 and i have no computer. Does it follow now that I might swear off the company, although I love the OS, besides the fact that they sold me hardware that's died completely twice in it's first 5 months (of calendar time, 3 months of actual use?
Oh, and describing Venzuela as hostile to the US is like describing the mouse in the tank as hostile to the boa.

to get in touch by phone or by letter with US Apple.
Use Skype to call, or send a letter. You might have
been able to arrange for your friend to bring you a
new one, or at least the logic board, if you had
made the effort to contact Customer Support earlier.

Just a little money, lots of time and patience, assuming this old powerbook is more adept skype than garageband. But there's no way I'd ever ask a friend to carry a naked computer board through x ray machines in 2 countries to help an international corporation extralegally subvert customs. i'm old-fashioned that way.
Sorry if this all seems a little heated. I'm not mad at you, I promise, but i am awfully frustrated at my treatment by apple (the corporation and not the kids at the store).

Can logic board be at failure if I can boot the machine?

My 8800GT went kaputt (screen jagged up and crashes during boot under OS X) so I replaced it with GTX285, which only worked for 2 hours and then machine shut down and didn't power up again with 285 in. But I could still power up AND boot Windows with 8800GT, even if the screen is all jagged up. (Mac OS X doesn't boot, it crashes during boot with 8800GT).
I take it to the apple store in France/Lyon and they tell me they think it's the logic board which has failed. They'll order one, and try, and if it works, I pay, if it doesn't I don't pay.
I told them that the logic board couldn't have failed since the machine boots into Windows without any issues, and I can use the machine on Windows. It recognizes both CPU's and all the RAM, I even did a Geekbench test in Windows.
What I suspected was Power Supply but they said Power Supply is fine. But checking power supply is a long procedure, almost takes an entire day to watch and record all the voltage outputs. It's not a simple task, which I highly doubt they did.
Now, my question is, Can a Mac Pro boot into Windows and be usable with a failed logic board? Have you ever heard of such a thing? I could even use that machine in Target Mode from my MBP. 99% a working Target Mode means all the I/O on the machine is working perfectly fine.

Bowker, yes within limits the slot loading logic boards (350 - 500mhz) are reasonably interchangable. The 600 and 700mhz ones don't seem to fit in slower machines, due to a different shaped heat sink on the video chip. Why are you swopping? You will not notice much difference between a 400 and 500mhz, I swopped between a 350 and 500mhz and honestly there's very little difference. Three important things if you do decide to go ahead.
1 make sure that this board works before purchase
2 replace the PRAM battery while you have your iMac in bits
3 if you are going to run OSX, make sure that the new logic board has been flashed with the 4.19 firmware.

G5 Dual 2.0 Ghz PPC logic board died, ideas?

Hi there, I have seen a few other posts related to this, but figured I would ask for any info on my situation & sad story in these tighter economic times.
I have: Mac G5 Tower, PPC 2.0 Ghz (late 2004)
It has run fine for me since i bought it, not a single issue or problem. Obviously, it is out of warranty & apple care, and in fact, Apple will cease supporting this model in Oct '09.
The computer fails to boot up, brought to Apple Store & was told "logic board AND processor need to be replaced". Cost to replace 764 (logic board) +764 (processor) +135 (labor) = a lot of money for an older machine!
Personally, I did not believe this... i have burned logic boards before, but never a processor. I asked them if i could attempt to just replace the logic board, if that worked, just pay for that... if not, have the part returned (restocking fee only).
In my area, there is an independent mac store, that offered a quote of 570 (logic board)+ 100 labor. This is still a high price for an older machine. The indy shop is still a lot.... my same computer sells on ebay used for roughly the same price as the indy repair.
As I know what is specifically is wrong, has anyone had any experiences buying parts like logic boards online? I see some listed on ebay for like $240.
Does anyone have any advice on how to proceed with this? Certainly, buying the cheap used parts can be dangerous... or not solve the problem, or whatever...
In the present economy, I hope to get a bit more 'life' out of my G5 before replacing it... but really I dont think it is worth paying more than $300ish under the circumstances.

Sudden Logic Board Failure(LBF Syndrome) is a pandemic everywhere you read the boards. The G5 processors or logic boards or power supplies were really terrible on these machines.
If you want to escalate, you have to DEMAND that you speak to a higher tech manager. Apparently, they will pay for it all if you raise Cain. I'm a fan of Mac products, and my g4 laptop 17" is the best darn thing I ever bought I think.
-Software upgrades with Power management fixes nuked my g5 the first round
-Everytime I unplugged the machine and took it to the AppleStore the PMU reset and the machine behaved better
-I took it in 3 times, they could not diagnose the issue
-After a week, the machine would never boot without the option key
-After living with the option key, the machine would have spontaneous shutdowns
-I cleaned the interior, and that was OK for a month or 2.
-The machine would have kernal panics after that
-then the UNIX code would spew on screen
-then it wouldn't boot at all, even with OS CDs
-Gray apple only-then fans of glory would kick in.
So, what happened? I can only guess since Genius Bar didn't help me is:
-g5 chips ran so hot and energy management ate the Power Manager(they went to Intel because Power PC g5 would have set laptops on fire)
-Constant shutdowns thanks to Power Manager fragged the PMU. The UPS I bought helped for 6 months...sort of.
-The above ate the LOGIC board(bad PMUs do BAD things to Boards and RAM)
-Once the power manager starts getting irregular, the machine kernal panics because of cooling issues or RAM panics and eventually everything corrupts and the poor voltage management destroys the machine.
Mac techs blamed my house voltage, but the electrician tested it and it was fine. The PMU is supposed to smooth amps and volt spikes but it did such a bad job I suspect it shorted or blasted major components.
I'm getting a new Imac which has it's own problems-I don't think the g5 is worth saving but Apple should give a rebate or refund prorated for the years it was used. It's a very bad representative of Apple products and they should be ashamed that they hid or submerged the issue. I think so many software updates dealt with Power management(ie:energy saving) because Logic boards were blowing sky high exponentially.

Can Logic Boards be Repaired?

I have a failed early 2009 24inch 3.06 GHz with ATI 4850 512 MB graphics.
The hard disk and all other parts are fine, and the machine only boots in safe mode.
Everything has been tried, plus sending to an authorised Apple support service.
I am informed that the Logic Board has failed and face a huge bill to have it replaced.
My questions are as follows.
1. What has failed?
2. Can it be repaired?
3. What is the Apple experience of this?
I have noticed I am also not alone with this problem.
Logic dictates if the Board has failed, a replacement will also fail.
So what is the real fault, and what is the real repair of it?
Or is this a fault that is too complicated for Apple to have a fix other than replace it and repeat the problem.

The logic board is a printed circuit board with hundreds capacitors resistors and similar small components soldered onto the fine copper strip.
Additionally there are sockets for RAM drives and CPUs, GPUs etc...
One of the common issues with PCBs in general is solder bleed shorting as a result of heat build up- If this happens its terminal !
Apple have diagnostics that can identify a fault and provide a reference number however frankly if the fault IS on the board (broken copper strip solder bleed or tiny resister for instant) its remains easier and more cost effective to replace the board than attempt to strip the board out - bench test find fault replace and reassemble.
Replacing PCBs is industry practice.
Those fault diagnostic results ARE analyzed by Apple for trends and to identify quality issues.
Lowluster is quite wrong in saying that Apple are secretive if there is an identified design or engineering issue.
In fact there have been such problems in their products and they HAVE had programs to replace those FREE and after normal warranties such as a problem with iBook logic boards faulty MacPro graphic cards,Macbook damaged bottom panels and battery swelling are some.

How can i make my officejet 6500a print in black and white only?

I just bought an officejet 6500a and I can't figure out how to make it print in black in white only. I print a lot of stuff that doesn't need color and want to save my ink. On some prints it gives me that option when I print. but for the most part it doesn't allow me to change to black and white on things i am printing off the web

It happens as I surf - horizontal black and white lines particularly when I scroll down and only goes if I can go to a new page or go back a page. It is driving me crazy and only happens with firefox. I have disabled all plug ins but it still happens.

Try to disable hardware acceleration.

If disabling hardware acceleration works then check if there is an update available for your graphics display driver.

Will apple replace or exchange this for me? It has never been abused, I treat it with so much care. I didn't even think about getting the extended warranty...I expect my computer to last longer than 2 years. Feel really let down by this.

Sorry for your problems but, unless there's a known problem with certain problems, Apple will charge you to replace your motherboard. Next time, I strongly suggest buying AppleCare. I've owned Macs since 1985 and when AppleCare became available, I always bought it for any hardware device for which it was offered - and I believe that it is a particularly good investment for laptops.
You should take it to an Apple Store and see what the price would be for the repair - they are often surprisingly reasonable.
