Can music already on an ipod be added to a new iTunes library ?
Hi Everyone - I recently purchased a laptop but have a dilemma with my iTunes libraries and iPods. My Nano was synched to my iTunes library on desktop PC, then I synched new classic iPod to same library, therefore both iPods had same music on them. I then set up iTunes on laptop and added some new music into the new library but then tried to merge Classic iPod (with old music) with new music in new library, but all it would allow was to synch them. This caused the problem I need help with as when synching, old music is erased and replaced with new music.
Is there any way of adding old music on an iPod to a second (new) iTunes library on a different computer ??
If there is, can you tell me step by step how to, as I'm still a novice with these things !!
Many thanks,
SC
This is copied from another thread. I think it is pretty clear. Here is the link to the thread as well. You will need to do this for each device if they all have different content on them.

1) Without connecting your iPad to your laptop, start iTunes. Click on Edit. Click on Preferences. Click on Devices. Check the box next to "Prevent your iPod etc. from automatically syncing." Click OK.
2) Now connect your iPad to your laptop and start iTunes.
3) When iTunes starts, right click on your iPad under Devices in the left column. Select Transfer purchases etc.
4) After it finishes transferring all your apps to your new laptop, right click on your iPad and select Backup your iPad.
5) After it finishes backing up your iPad, right click on your iPad and select Restore etc.
6) After it finishes restoring, left click on your iPad , then click on the Apps tab on top, and check the box next to Sync Apps, then click on Apply below.
If everything on your iPad looks good after the sync, go back and click on Edit / Preferences / Devices and UN-check the box next to Prevent your iPod etc. The only other thing you may want to check is if your contacts, bookmarks, etc. are syncing correctly now. If not, go to the Info tab after connecting and make sure you indicate which features you want to sync with what sources.
If you have more questions, post back.

I lost my iTunes in my old computer. How do I transfer my music files in my ipod (old generation) into the new iTunes (which is currenelty blank) set up in my new computer. Thanks for your help.
You cannot transfer song files from iPod to computer using iTunes (except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store). However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer. If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
Once the song files are on your computer's hard drive, you can add them to your iTunes library.
NOTE: You can also re-download previous song purchases from the iTunes Store at no cost, from the iTunes Store Purchased screen. -
Ok, so I have a new computer and wanted to transfer my itunes library from my old computer. I could not get the files to transfer. I downloaded the newest version of itunes and see that I can download my previously purchased music to the new computer. I have mp3's that I can add in on my own so I don't have a problem starting over in itunes.
My question is what happens when I plug in my 1st gen ipod touch and try to sync??? Will it erase what is on my ipod or will I be able to move the stuff from my ipod into my new itunes library?? Any info would be great...I'm happy with how my ipod is set up so I really don't want to mess with a good thing. Also, will I need to update and of my software on my ipod since it's 1st generation??
Thanks for the help!!You can only sync to one iTunes library/computer. If you do sync the iPod is erases and its contents replaced with what is in the iTunes library of the second computer.
To avoid that see:

My laptop crashed and I cannot access the harddrive. How can I transfer everything to my new iTunes to be able to sync my products with having to "erase" and start from scratch on evrything? Any insight will be greatly appreciatted! Thank you!!
Your iPad is married to its now deceased old computer. This is the reason for the necessity of a backup for your computer, which your iPad is not.
Your iTunes Store and App Store purchases will not be lost. Just don't "erase and sync" when you sync your iPad to your new Mac:
If you want to move the iTunes Store purchases on your device to the new computer, choose "Transfer Purchases." The new computer must be set up with your iTunes Store account and authorized to play your iTunes Store purchases in order to transfer your iTunes Store purchases.

Syncing ipad, ipod and iphone to a new itunes library
Hi,
I need some guidance on how to achieve what is in my mind a relatively common problem... how do I sync my iPad, iPod (x2) and iPhone to a new computer without having to erase everything.
The scenario is as follows. I have one iTunes library on an old PC. In my family we have an iPad, 2 iPod Touch's and an iPhone, all synced with that machine and that one account. The old PC has seen better days, so I have bought a new machine. I thought it was as easy as just installing iTunes, copying the music over, downloading the apps with my apple id, and bob's your uncle.
Guess not, the first time I plug in the iPad it says that I need to erase the darn thing. You can imagine the drama in the house... one is about to lose their Smurf farm, the other is about to lose their levels in Angry birds, etc, etc. Don't worry about my contacts and emails, nobody cares about that. It's all the data that is stored with the various apps of the various members of my family that has everyone up in arms.
So my question is how can I basically make this whole lot work with my new computer? I am sure that I am not the first one buying a new computer, so I am (hopefully) sure that Apple has build this bit of logic somewhere in their software and devices. Just can't find it, and judging by the amount of blogs, articles and posts dedicated to this it appears that there are a couple of million other people that are equally unable to find this bit of functionality.
Please help... my kids and the wife are not allowing me to get rid of this old PC until this is resolved.

How can I sync my iMac & iPod Touch calendar & contacts with new iTunes?
I have just installed the latest iTunes to my iMac. My iPod Touch has iOS 6.0.1. My iMac has OS 10.6.8. I sync by Wi Fi via iCloud. My calendar and contacts are not syncing by Wi Fi between the two, although my mail is. I What should I do?
This says that it can't be done.
But I am able to do it for my calendars in iCloud, just not for my contacts in iCloud.
What is the reason for the difference. -
Want my current ipod to synch to a new itunes library
Hi there - wondered if anyone can help?
I had itunes installed - ipod and itunes all working fine. then my computer got a virus and had to have everything wiped. Now when I plug my Ipod in it tells me that it is synched to a library alreday (which was wiped) and I could synch it to the new library but it will wipe everything.
Any ideas how I can get the music off my ipod into a library on my computer?
many thanksThis has also happened to me, and it seems to be a big problem for many people.
If you're in the UK, ring the following number 0800 048 0408. I spoke to a really helpful guy, explained what had happened (old PC needed new hard drive, itunes wiped off old drive). He was really helpful (and patient!) and guided me through what I needed to do. I managed to download all my purchased music back, but in regards to all your other imported music, you'll have to do it all again I'm afraid.
Hope this helps - please ring the number (I think it is a call centre in the States, so use a landline!!). -
I had all my music on an external hard drive which itunes referred to as the stored location. this drive has now died and I only have the music on my iphone/ipad. How do I recreate my music on another external drive using the music on my iphone/ipad?
Have you failed to maintain a backup copy?
If so, not good, you can transfer itunes purchases from the iphone: File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
You may be able to purchase a third party program to get the rest ( not supported by Apple). -

Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The following article provides an answer to your question:

iPod shuffle and iPhone are intended for use with a single computer. You cannot load music from multiple computers or iTunes libraries onto iPod shuffle and iPhone like you can with other devices.
You'll need to setup your iPod to sync to this new iTunes library:

Hi, so I got my new computer loaded up with iTunes and I want to be able to move my music from my old iPod to my new iTunes library without losing any of the music I already have placed on the iPod. How would I do this? And please I'm not too savvy with the new iTunes layout and such so if you could make this easy in layman's terms that would be great.
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you purchased all songs in the iTunes Store, plug your iPod to your Mac or PC and iTunes will ask you to transfer purchases.
If you didn't purchase any song or you have non-purchased songs from the iTunes Store, you have to use an application to transfer the songs to iTunes. Here is a list of applications you can use for that > https://discussions.apple.com/message/11319208#11319208 -
I have music on my ipod and i want to add more music from a diffrent computer but everytime i try it tells me i have to erase all the music already on my ipod. ihave tried to do multiple things and it does not seem to work.
Yes, you can use the one that's not broken. It just doesn't have the same stuff as your iPod. So when you sync the content will be erased. If you have a backup, then you can save your iPod content. Anyway, those songs, apps and books you purchased from iTunes can be re-download free of charge.
