Can no longer connect to Time Machine as a server

Have been using an external drive connected to the Time Machine to store my iTunes media files.  All of a sudden, the computers on my home network can no longer access the drive as they now have problems connecting to the Time Machine server.  However, the wireless router works just fine.  Is anyone else experiencing this problem and if so, any advice on how to solve the problem?  I can no longer access any of the content on the external drive through the Time Machine, although it appears in the Finder as a shared drive.

I presume you are on Mountain Lion.. it does have some network issues..
Try just rebooting.. and restart everything in the correct order..
Modem.. router/TC.. USB drive.. clients.. 2min gap between each.
If you still have issues do a verify of the drive.

can any one help my airport utility can no longer find my time machine or Air port express

Try connecting an Ethernet cable from your Mac to the Time Capsule to see if that allows AirPort Utility to "see" it.
By the way, don't confuse "Time Machine",backup software included with OS X since version 10.5, with "Time Capsule", an Apple Wi-Fi base station with an integrated disk drive.

  • Help: Can no longer see old time machine backups

Hello everyone and thank you for your help.
I have two computers, a Power Mac G5 tower and a Mac Book Pro both backing up using time machine to a USB drive connected to my Time Capsule. Previously my backup drive was connected via usb to my airport extreme, however when I moved the drive my Power Mac G5 stopped being able to see its old backups. However my Mac Book Pro can still see its backups. Both have always connected via WIFI for backups.
Also my G5 tower takes a very long time to "prepare" its backups (usually much longer than 30 minutes) while my mac book pro does not, any insight into why this might be?

Dude, was having the same problem; just saw this solution in the FAQ listed below you. It worked for me, just hold down the Option key while you click on the TM button and select "Other backups".
I had the same setup as you, an external drive that's been used as both an Airport disk and a locally mounted drive. TM gets confused when you switch it up like that.
    17. What if I can't see my backups, or the Backups for a different Mac, via Enter Time Machine ?
TM keeps the backups for each Mac separate, and normally only shows the ones for the Mac it's running on, even if there are other Macs' backups on the same disk/partition.
Also, sometimes TM will start a new "sequence" of backups, as if they were from a different Mac.
To see these "other" backups, you need the (badly named) Browse Other Time Machine Disks option. It's available by holding down the Option key while selecting the TM icon in your Menubar, or by control-clicking (right-clicking) the TM icon in your Dock.
You'll see a selection screen showing all the disks/partitions that have TM backups on them. Select the one you want, and you'll be taken to the normal TM "Star Wars" interface, where you should see all the backups on that disk/partition.

  • Can no longer backup with time machine to WD MyBookLive.

Earlier I got the "OSStatus error 2" and now I get a message that the backup failed, "time machine couldn't back up to mybooklive. Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder."
I've signed in as guest, which I have always done in the past but it keeps failing.
I am using WD MyBookLive and can access my files from my iphone without issues.
Current OS X v 10.9.2. updated back in March and my last successful backup was April 13, 2014.
Am up to date with updating all software.
The following are log messages from the system log queries:

    4/26/14 8:30:09.447 PM com.apple.backupd[1619]: Starting automatic backup
I've rebooted time machine and my book. Checked settings and nothing seems amiss.

  • After servicing my laptop recently, I can no longer find the time machine back up disk

I recenty had my macbook pro serviced after the hard drive cable was broken. Upon return, when I attempt to back up to time machine it says backup disk not available and I cannot find any disks to select in time machine preferences. Any idea how to fix this?

    aimehunter,
if you had Time Machine running without connecting an external drive directly to your MacBook Pro, then it must have been a wireless connection to an AirPort Time Capsule.
Open the Time Machine pane in System Preferences. Does it show that you have a destination drive selected there? If not, press the Select Disk… button to select your AirPort Time Capsule drive. After that, select Back Up Now from the Time Machine icon in your menu bar to restart your regular Time Machine backups.

  • Powerbook G4 can no longer connect to Time Capsule network

For more than a year, my Powerbook G4 17"  was able to access the internet provided wirelessly via my Time Capsule.  I recently had to reconfigure the Time Capsule setup to address an unrelated issue, and now I am unable to join the wireless network at all from the Powerbook.  I would guess that I inadvertantly changed something about the setup of the Time Capsule, but I can't figure out what.  All other wireless devices (iMac, Apple TV, iPad) in the house are able to connect without problem, so I know that it is at least not a password issue.  Eventhough I enter the correct password for the network on the G4, I only get a "connection timeout" error.
Any suggestions as to what I might try to get connected again?

  • Can no longer connect to SMB server after upgrading to Lion

We have a MacBook Pro that was running 10.6.8. The user upgraded to Lion, and can no longer connect to a Windows 2008 file server. (We have two offices connected through a hardware tunnel, but i do not think this is the issue.)
We have tried to connect in the Finder (smb://[email protected]/). It asks for usr / pass, and then just hangs on "Connecting to server"
We can ping, have tested these credentials on other computers, and tried other credentials on this computer, to no avail. Furthermore, we installed a fresh copy of Lion on another computer, and successfully connected, so I don't think the issue is with Lion itself.
There must be something from the previous install that did not "upgrade" properly, but I don't know which file / setting it could be. It is system-wide setting, as we have also tried another user account on this same Mac.
We've also run Onyx to fix permissions, clean out all caches, etc.
Any idea what file i can change, modify, or delete?
Your thoughts would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

Yes, but the issue is not with Lion directly; there seems to be something with the upgraded system, perhaps a legacy setting or pref... I've scoured the system to no avail. I'm actually about to reinstall 10.6 - wasted too much time on this issue.
    Thanks for your help.

  • After updating Time Capsule to 7.7.2, Airport Expresses can no longer connect

After I update the Time Capsule firmware to 7.7.2, my three Airport Expresses can no longer connect to the Time Capsule (their orange lights blink and they appear inaccessible in the Airport Utility). When I downgrade, they are able to connect fine.
They are connecting to the Time Capsule over my 5GhZ wireless network.
    Any help?

i baught Seagate Backup plus 2T hard drive to use as my Backup time machine. But its not working. when i connect to time machine its not coping files, it keep saying preparing files. Can someone help me please...

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Why can I no longer backup to Time Machine on OS X Server?

We have a Windows Server and a Mac Server. The OS X Server is basically only for backups from workstations via Time Machine and as a Software Update Server.
I can no longer backup from my MacBook to the Server. If I try to add the location again in Time Machine Prefs, it asks for username and password. I try my AD account, but it fails. Guest doesn't work either. Any suguestions? When I set up the Time Machine service on the server, it was very easy. What did I miss?

You have to enter the name and password of an administrator on the server.

I have an HP LaserJet 2300 printer attached via USB to my Windows XP Pro machine.
Until recently I could print from my Mac Book.
Now I can't even connect to the machine to print or to any of the other XP Pro machines that have locally attached printers.
I can connect via SMB and transfer files.
I booted from an external disk that has a full backup from 10 days ago and was able to print and to connect to the other other XP Pro machines that have locally attached printers.

Are you running WEP encryption? Chances are the new router interprets your password in a form that the touch can't deal with. You can either using the hex code in place of the password you created or reset your encryption to WPA2-psk and create a new 10-12 character password.
If you don't want to change encryption, you can reconfigure your WEP passwords - 5 characters only with 48bit or 13 characters only with 128 bit.

  • Mac's and PCs can no longer connect after 10.4.10 Upgrade SMB Crash - Help

This is my second post on this topic. I have read other similar threads, but none of the advice I have tried has worked so far. We have 4 PCs and 5 Macs at home that were networking nicely until we upgraded the G5 10.4.10. The G5 can browse and connect to any machine on the network. However, no other machine can connect to a shared folder on the G5.
I installed a clean 10.4.10 on a second hard drive and it works fine. So that eliminates hardware and infrastructure. I really did not want to have to reinstall everything from scratch.
I performed an Archive and Install and that did not work.
    1) On my G5 I turn on Personal or Windows File Sharing
    2) From another computer PC or Mac I attempt to connect to the shared files
    3) The connection is made most of the time and I can see the folders. However within a few minutes or the second time I attempt to browse the folders, I get an error.
    4) When I return to the G5, the Service is unchecked
    The console log is reporting...

  • Can no longer connect to certain shares after upgrading to 10.8.4

After upgrading to the latest version of Mountain Lion, I can no longer access certain shared volumes. I have one machine running 10.4.11 and I can connect to its hard drive. Another machine on my network runs 10.5.8, and I can now only connect to the built-in hard drive. There are also 2 Firewire drives connected to that (10.5.8) machine that I can no longer connect to.
When I use "Connect to Server" and enter the AFP address of the 10.5.8 machine, I get a full list of "available" shares, but if I select one of the FireWire volumes, I just get a spinning "rosette" for several minutes and then a failure message. I also have an OS 9 machine that I can no longer connect to on the same network.
I already read the "Connecting to Legacy Systems" notice and still no joy after following the instructions.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks!
    Jon

No NAS other than an Apple one includes native support for AFP. They all use an open source package called Netatalk that is junk. Many years ago Apple deprecated the old security modules that Netatalk uses.
The easiest solution is to hack up Lion so that it will connect with the old security protocol. Do a search for "lion dhx2" or something like that. Another option is to update your NAS to a version of Netatalk that includes support for DHX2. That is easier said than done. Netatlk isn't as "open" as other open source packages.
