Can photos & text blocks span two (facing) pages?

Hi there,
For some of the pages of the book I'm working on, I want certain photos to span two facing pages.  If I can do this I would also want captions under the photos to span the two pages.  It wouldn't matter if the 'middle' of the photos is right where the two pages meet, but of course I'd have to have a bit of free space in these middle margins so that the text in my captions isn't lost in the seam.  Am I explaining this well enough?
I realize I could maybe do what I want to do by creating two half-photos from the one—the photo for the left-hand page would be the left side of the photo, the photo for the right-hand page would be the right half of the photo.  I could do the same thing for my text caption(s).  But I'm afraid it would be hard to line up both sides, so they look right when printed.  Which leads me to ask a second question—can I put Pages in a side-by-side view, so I can see both left and right pages together, at the same time?  I've looked under View in the top menu, and I don't see such an option.
Thanks for any advice.
Malcolm

Pages '09 v4.3 is not 5 years old and is a substantially better solution than the one year old Pages 5 anything, that at this rate will take until at least 2023 to even reach parity with Pages '09.
I would not trust a major project which is a lot of my time and money to a failed app such as Pages 5, which has had innumerable file format versions, fails to save, update and open with distressing regularity and seems to have little love or care from Apple in the year it has been out.
What you propose will not give you the mirrored pages you need for a real book anyway.
What is not safe is leaving it in Pages 5.5.1

  • Can a graphic span two (facing) pages?

Can a graphic span two (facing) pages? As far as I can tell, it's limited to being on one page or the other, and gets cut off at the margin/edge of page.
I'm pretty sure InDesign does this. Yes, I recognize theirs no comparing the two. I mention it only as a point of reference.

Duplicate the graphic so you have two. Open them in Preview and crop each one appropriately so you have two halves. Save the cropped images and place them in where you want them in your Pages document.

  • How do I make a photo span two facing pages?

I'm doing a magazine layout in Pages '08 and have run into a problem I haven't been able to solve to my satisfaction. I want a photo (or any type of graphic) to be able to span across two facing pages. As soon as I drag the handles on the photo over past the center border between two facing pages, the part of the photo dragged to the second page disappears. I've tried bringing it to the front, duplicating the photo and placing one on one page and the second on the other, then nudging them together, but this is a really poor solution. Has anyone been able to place a photo across two facing pages? If so, how'd you do it?

Pages has never allowed an image to span a page gap. You can see how I've done it in this post.
If we expect this to change in any future versions of Pages, we need to leave feedback for the Pages team.

  • How can I set mirror margins (or "facing pages") in 5.0?

I recently updated by Mac System to Maverick just so I could update to the new version of Pages. In so doing, I gave up my old MS word program (because it was outdated for this system). But Pages did most of those things I needed.
    HOWEVER
Now, I am trying to format a .pdf file to publish a book and I CANNOT see how to set "mirror margins" or "facing pages" in order to properly format my book. What happened to this feature (and what the **** was Pages thinking when they dropped this feature, if they did?).
I saw another post that suggested trashing Pages 5.0 and getting the old version out of a folder and using it (not sure I can now that I'm running Maverick).
Do I need to go buy a new version of MS Word so that I can format books now?
    Help!
(And I need it right NOW).
    Thanks,
    Lareena

Both Pages '09 and Pages '08 work with Mavericks.

  • I'm editing a 24 page booklet which when I open in Pages 5.0.1 is single pages.  How can I change the format to facing pages to give to the printer?

I'm editing a 24 page booklet which was done about a year ago in another version of Pages.  When I open it now in Pages 5.0.1 it comes up as single pages.  My question is how do I get it back to a facing pages format to give to the printer?

Export to Pages 09 and use that. Version 5.1 lacks the ability to use alternating left/right margins and many, many other features that are present in Pages 09.  Pages 5.1 adds back a vertical ruler ( why ever was it omitted?) but still lacks about 90--that's nine zero, as in "nearly 100"-- features that were in Pages 09.  Some of these features are obscure , some very basic.  At this point, however, Pages 5.1 is a novelty application, basically useless for any serious work

  • Double spreads - can I place an image across two pages in facing page mode?

Hi, I'm just getting into Pages to be able to create custom wedding album designs easily (I use Aperture). I'd really like to be able to place an image across two facing pages and I noticed that there is a 'facing page' mode, but this looks like it only applies to the view.
I tried laying an image across two 10x13 inch pages, but of course this doesn't work. I also tried to insert a 10x26 inch page as an alternative so that I can treat it as a double page. However, when I try to do this, every page resets to that size.
Is there a way of creating two page sizes (one normal, the other double width) in the same document so I can do this, or is there a way of spreading an image across two facing pages?
    Thanks

    brown,
You've bumped into one of Pages' limitations -- it won't allow one image across a spread. I've heard rumors of people kludging it by cutting the image in half, and putting each half on the spread pages.

  • How do I create a newsletter with facing pages that have the margins adjusted for stapling the pages on the left side? ...Like a book.I hate the new pages.

Can anyone recommend a program for newsletters that makes sense.  I used AppleWorks and the old page without any problem. Facing pages, two columns, text boxes, photos, mastheads.   The new pages *****! I can't adjust spacing between lines as needed, I can't adjust the margins for facing pages. Inspector is not what it used to be.  If I use Pages '09 v. 4.3 (1048), I am not allowed to make corrections. My choice is cancel, update, or correct a copy which is no longer '09.

  • Possible to view PDFs in Preview app as facing pages?

Is there a way to view a PDF with facing pages in the Preview app? Like if you had a book open?
    (Other than slideshow?)

    Thanks,
Tried that, no luck. Are there any other settings I can try?
BTW, I can display the same PDF with facing page in DevonThink and Journler with no problems.

  • Baseline grid? How do you make type line up across facing pages?

I'm laying out a book in Pages, and I have it set up as 12.5-point type on 15-point line spacing, exactly. The margin at the top and bottom of both pages is 0.9 inches. There is a header and a footer set on each page at 0.4 inches. But occasionally, one page will have 32 lines of body type on it, and the facing page will have 31 lines. No change in type size or leading on either page.
When I saw in the Pages user manual that you could specify the line spacing "exactly," I thought that was the solution. But still, occasionally, I will get two facing pages do not line up exactly, one still has 32 lines and the other 31.
I thought, hmm, what if I change the leading to 14.9-point on the 31-line page just to see what happens. Weirdly enough, the spacing does tighten up, way more than enough to fit that 32nd line onto the page, but the type does not flow back in from the next page. It just leaves a bigger space there than before, and still 31 lines. I'm stumped.
Is there any kind of baseline grid feature in Pages that might cure this? I didn't see anything like that in the user manual, but could there be some kind of equivalent, or a workaround? (Well, besides using Quark or InDesign?) It would look so much better if it didn't have the occasional blank line at the bottom of a page.
    Thanks for any advice.

Thanks much, Walt and Peter, you were both right. I rethought my whole document layout, starting with the idea that I would put every line of 12-point body type on a 14-point slug. So I made the page length a multiple of 14-point lines. I also had some 16-point chapter titles that I formatted to be on 28-point slugs. I was not consistent enough in my chapter headline formatting before. And I tweaked my top and bottom margins so the length of the type area on the page would accommodate 37 lines of type. Once I had this setup, I was confident it would work. It did. For a while. Then I ran into a page that had only 36 lines, not 37. Hmmm. Yes, that's where unchecking the "prevent widow and orphan lines" box paid off. It allowed a line to flow back from the next page and fill in the 37th slug.
It doesn't have the elegance of setting up a baseline grid and locking the type to it, but it works. Thanks again for your assistance, guys.

  • In the book module of Lightroom 4 I would like to create a two-page spread with a text block

I'd like to use a single photo as a crossover through the gutter. I do not see an option to include a text block in such a layout. Am I missing something?

I think many of us were mislead by Adobe's labeling of the boxes as "text" and "caption" - at least I was, initially.
The text options of the templates are not very versatile since neither their location nor their size can be changed, once it is fulf with text - that's it.
The surprising - and unexpected-  feature is the caption box that in reality is the needed text box since
    a) it adapts in size to the amount of text - and to the size of the font,
    b) the text can be moved within the box with the Padding Feature, and
    c) the box can be moved up or down with the Offset slider.
To make the caption box that versatile you have to uncheck <Align with photo> in the Caption panel.

  • How can I have a standard text block appear on the last page of my documents?

How can I have a standard text block appear on the last page of my documents without having to type it in all the time? I have a terms statement with a line for a customer’s signature which I want on the last page of my invoices and right now I have to type it in each time or cut and paste it from a previous invoice. I already have a Master Page that includes the customer information and my company information at the top of each page and I am using data merge to fill each page with the items ordered and their pictures etc. I would just like to have this standard terms block automatically show up on the last page after the last item in the data merge.
Thank you all in advance for your help.

Thank you Peter. This works. I have the text block now at the bottom of a second master page which I apply to the last page. For aesthetics I can modify the position of the text block in the new master page to bring it up from the bottom under the last item ordered when there is less than 4 items on the page. (my data merge fits up to 4 items with their images on a page).  If the last page is full I’ll insert a final page using the second master and also bring it up to the top of the page.

  • I have a one-column table in pages.  Each cell has text and a number separated by a colon.  Can I automatically make it two column with everything to the right of the colon in the second column?

I have a one-column table in pages.  Each cell has text and a number separated by a colon.  Can I automatically make it two column with everything to the right of the colon in the second column?

Here's another way that is pretty quick to do.
    Formula in Column B is:
    =LEFT(A, FIND(":", A))
    Formula in Column C is:
    =RIGHT(A, LEN(A)-FIND(":", A))
You can eliminate the colon from the result in column B by writing:
    =LEFT(A, FIND(":", A)-1)
Once you do the conversion, you should freeze the result by Selecting columns B and C and then Command-C, Edit > Paste Values.

  • Pages 5.1 (1769) is failing to render text blocks on printing as .pdf, what can I do?

Sometimes all blocks are rendered properly and sometimes text blocks and images are missing. It appears to be random. It's happening when I open a document and when I print documents out to be saved as a pdf.
Has anyone had this problem? How is it solved?
    Thanks,
    George

The fact that renderings for print are very different from page display would seem serious. Print is unreliable. Blocks appearing on screen are moved or missing when printed or the document is saved,  closed, and then reopened. This occurs at random. Is there anywhere in the Apple world to log a problem? Are others experiencing similar problems? Arrrrrrrgh! I have little enough hair already.

  • Placing an object/photo over gutter in two page layout in Pages???

So here's my issue. I'm new to pages and need all the help I can get. I have a two page layout and I'm trying to place a large photo across the gutter so that it will show on both pages. It will let me create the object and place a picture in it but it disappears on the other page. What am I not doing? Thanks for your help!
    mrs.rodgers

Welcome to the forums, mrs. rodgers.
Do you mean you have an actual two page layout (with "Facing Pages" selected in the Document Inspector)? If so (and it's not just a two column layout on one page), then there is unfortunately no way to set a picture to span two pages automatically.
Your best bet is to fake the effect by placing two copies of the picture, one on each side of the gutter, with appropriate masks set on each, so that the left page has the left side of the picture, and the right page has the right side. Do note, however, that most printers won't print right to the edge of the page (so-called "borderless" or "full-bleed" printing), and so it may not turn out exactly as you desire.

  • How do I use page numbering and a text block in a footer in Word with the Report Generation Toolkit?

I am creating a Word document with the Report Generation Toolkit, and LabVIEW 8.2.1. In the report I am using a template that has page numbering enabled in the center. When I try to add a text block to the left side footer, it eliminates the page numbering and adds my text on the left side. I found "Set Report Footer Text" and "Word Set Page Numbering" vi's that may be the clue to this. When I use these two vi's I either get Page 1 of 456789-001 on the left side, or if I reverse the order I get only 456789-001(text) in the left side with nothing in the center. What I would like to achieve is 456789-001(text) on the left footer, and Page 1 of 2 in the center. Is this possible and if it is, then how can I do it?

    Hi SciManStev,
I have attached a vi where you can see how they can be made to work together. You have to design it such that one follows the other. If you don't design it that way, it results in a race condition and only one of them get executed.
    Good Luck!
