Can rman backups be used to restore to a different server

We are using R12 with 10gr2 database
If i take Rman backups, can they be used to restore on some other test server for cloning and bringing that test server upto date like the production.
I am confues and dont know and This is the only reason i dont use rman for backups, instead take cold backups manually every night as they are used every week to clone some other server for testing purpose
Please advice
Thanks

Hi..
1. Copy the pfile to the new server.
2. startup nomount the database using the pfile.
3. Open a new RMAN session and connect to this database
4. Restore the controlfile, this will bring the database in mount stage
5. Once step 4 is completed, restore and recover the database.
NOTE:-- These are the steps for restoring the database when the RMAN backup pieces are copied to the same location as they are on the main server. If you copy the rman backup to some different location, then you will have to use the CATALOG BACKUPPIECE 'location' command before restoring the database.

  • RMAN backup testing using networker and NMO

I want to do some RMAN backup testing using networker 7.5 and NMO 5.0. I am doing these testing on VMware. I am not sure whether I need to buy some tape drive for my home PC to do backup testing or I can mimic hard drive as tape drive in VMWARE.
Do you have any idea? any suggestion please?
    Thanks..

I think this is not a RMAN/Oracle issue, as soon as you configure networker MML it's up to networker to define the real backup destination behind. Maybe networker has also a 'fake' tape destination, but I don't know this. There's a networker forum:

  • Can RMAN backup and export datapump executed at the same time?

    Hello,
I have several databases that I backup using RMAN and export datapump everynight starting at 6PM and end at Midnight. The backup maintenance window doesn't give me enough time for each database to run at different time. I am using crontab to schedule my backups. Since I have so many databases that need to be backed up between 6PM - Midnight, some of the export and RMAN backup scripts will execute almost at the same time. My question is can my export data pump and RMAN backup scripts run at the same time?
    Thank you in advance.
    John

Needs must. If you don't run expdp parallel then it doesn't use that much. If it was really killing the system then look into setting up a Resource plan that knocks that user down but this is a big step.
I woud better look into using Rman
system incrementals, and block change tracking, to minimize your RMAN time.

If your shop needs to do both simultaneously then go for it.
    Chris.
PS : One of my shops has maybe 20-30 rmans and pumps all kicking off some simultaneous, some not, from 0000 to 0130. No complaints from users and no problems either. Go for it.

  • RMAN backup fails using OEM with no output error

I am trying to do a weekly automatic full backup of a database in noarchivelog mode using RMAN in Enterprise Manager. Every time I submit the backup job (even if I try to do an immediate backup) the job fails almost immediately. When I Iook at the job output for the failed attempt, it says that there is no output for the job. I believe I have all of the preferred credentials and priveleges correct. Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem could be or maybe where I can find an error log for rman to get a better explanation of the error?
    Thanks

  • RMAN backups not using next available volume: uses next unlabeled volume

    Greetings.
I've noticed that sometimes (haven't zeroed in on when yet) when RMAN backs up using OSB, the first tape in the library, an RMAN volume, is grabbed and backed up to.
There are about 10 other RMAN-labeled volumes right below that first one. But RMAN will take an unlabeled volume further down in the library, label it as an RMAN volume, and proceed to back up to it.
This is happening often enough where my library is filling up with partially used RMAN volumes.
Three jobs (that I can see so far) are cron jobs calling an RMAN script. I'm looking for the other jobs which, I think, are run via OEM.
    Any thoughts?

  • Can't enable disk use for restored shuffle

My shuffle stopped playing music in March. I continued using it as a removable disk. I tried the restore utility and it worked - now my shuffle plays music again. However the latest iTunes (7.0.1 and 7.0.2) has no checkbox to enable disk use for when the Shuffle is connected. The checkbox is there for a 5G iPod but not for the Shuffle.
So - now it works as an iPod but no longer works as a disk. What is going on here? How can I enable disk use?

iTunes 7.0.2 is still displaying that checkbox for both of our local Shuffles.
Perhaps you just need to scroll down to find it. If it's actually not there then I'd have to think that this is an iTunes question, not an iPod one, and might be better placed in those forums.

  • Can i backup on 3gs and restore on 4s?

Can I backup an iPhone 3GS and restore onto a 4S?

Ouch. That is a problem. Why don't you want to update to iOS 6? I actually like it on my 4S because Siri finally works (well, most of the time -- usually). Of course, I'm not real happy about losing Google Maps and the "baked in" YouTube app (the one in the app store just isn't as good), but it's been a pretty good upgrade on the whole.

  • Can Time Machine be used to restore system after format?

    Hi,
I need to format my Macintosh HD because Boot Camp Assistant cannot partition it. Now I have it all backed up with Time Machine, can I just format and then restore from the Time Machine drive and everything (Leopard, apps, settings & files) will be back to normal?
    Thanks

I've just done it and it works faultlessly, the problem is, that after the restore, Time Machine wants to do a complete full backup for it's first backup, rather than realising that it already has a backup folder and continuing on from where it was. Consequently it tells me that I have insufficient space on my hard drive.

  • Backup few partitions from a database and restore them on different server

I have a Database called Datamart. Datamart database has multiple partitioned tables and the database has different filegroups and partitions. I would split the database on to three servers with one-third of the database on each.
If the database has 1500 partitions, then 0-499 on server1 Datamart database, 500-999 on server2 Datamart database and 1000-500 on server3 Datamart database.

  • Database restore on a different server

I have a database ORADB1 running on unix server and I took a hot backup using a script and restored it on the same server as ORADB2 and opened the database to verify it comes up and then shut it down.
Now I have to restore ORADB2 into a different server and bring it up as ORADB1 and I can't take another backup due to performance issue on the server, can someone tell me the steps involved in this?
    Thanks

Yes - this would be no different than the way you created ORADB2 from ORADB1 to begin with.
Use the same process by modifying the initialization file. If you use a different directory structure you will need to modify the control file since it specifies the location of the datafiles. You can execute
alter database backup controlfile to traceto put a 'text' copy of the binary control file in a trace file. Then extract the text to a a new file and modify the directory paths for the datafiles.
Just remember that your new ORADB1 will not contain the same data as your original ORADB1 since users have been making changes this entire time.

  • Generate RMAN backup Script using unix shell script

    Hello,
Could somebody give me a unix shell script that would generate RMAN script based on some user defined parameters in a config file.
    e.g.
    rman.conf
    CHANNELS=4
    USE_CATALOG=Y
    DEVICE='sbt_tabe'
    etc.,
    many thanks,
    kam

You can actually encapsulate the RMAN commands inside the shell script.
However if you really want to create a seperate RMAN script file, you can use the unix shell's "echo" command to write set variables to a file.
    Thus, for example,
    echo "rman target / catalog rman/rmanpassword@crcat" > RMAN_Script.rmn
echo "backup database plus archivelog" >> RMAN_Script.rmn
echo "backup archivelog all" >> RMAN_Script.rmn
    creates RMAN_Script.rmn with 3 commands.

  • After installing 10.5.2 can Time Machine be used to restore 10.5.0 ?

If I install 10.5.2 and then decide to go back to 10.5.0 - can I do a clean installation of Leopard from the DVD, and then use Time Machine to restore data onto the 10.5.0 clean instal. Or does Time Machine back up elements that are specific to the current Leopard update, i.e. 10.5.2 ?
I ask this beforehand, in case the upgrade to 10.5.2 goes awry, whereas I am having no problems with 10.5.0

The reason why I'd possibly need to go back to 10.5.0 is that, according to macpolls survey, 8.39% of people who installed 10.5.2 either had major problems or worse. As I see it, 8.39% is pretty close to 10%. That's a whopping big number. You're probably among the 91.6% who had no problems. For me, I use my iMac for my business, and I literally cannot afford for things to go wrong. As I see it, a risk of 8.39% is pretty huge in terms of the entire business shutting down if all computer records cannot be accessed on a critical day, e.g. when there is a critical deadline for submitting documents. Hence, before I install 10.5.2, I need to know how to get back to 10.5.0.
In your answer, you said that if I backup certain folders, I cannot go back to 10.5.0. Can you be more precise, because it doesn't actually tell me how I can ensure I can go back to 10.5.0. Right now, I have no control over what Time Machine backs up. It just backs up everything. If I don't back up the folder you referred to, will that adversely affect my reinstallation ?
