Can someone recommend a NAS device that works well with Macs?

I need to have a NAS (network attached storage) device that can be freely accessed by windows and mac computers. I rashly purchased an HP Mediavault; it was only $300 and has 2 500GB drives that I configured as raid-1 for safety. however if I load up a folder with 4000 files in it and browse to that directory, the mac finder thinks about this for say 30 seconds before it lists the files. The Windows machine can view the files in perhaps 4 seconds. I know that Macs have a slow file system but watching the little light blink on the NAS box and waiting so long is getting real annoying. Has anyone found a box that works well with macs and has good performance? These devices are so cheap now they must have crappy processors and stupid firmware. Perhaps someone can recommend a model that has some snap. I also need remote access via the web, and the insane HP software can only upload single files, can't upload a folder, which when you are working with 30,000 files like I am is no fun at all!

It's not really the brand as it is available printer drivers. Just be sure you verify that there is an available OS X printer driver.
OS X- Printer and scanner software available for download
Check the manufacturer's website for available printer drivers for any model in which you are interested.

  • Is there a NAS box that works well with OSX

I've always struggled with NAS boxes & OSX.  Sure, I can connect them up, and copy files to and from a mac, but eventually I always seem to run into issues.  Suddenly I can no longer access the files, or I can no longer connect at all, or it fails to connect with a specific user, etc.   I end up grovelling around support forums, typing sudo this & sudo that and eventually I can access the files again - until the next time.  They seeem to be more trouble than they are worth.  At least for me.  I've had these problems with Leopard, Snow Leopard & now with Lion.
I've got a macbook pro that only I use, plus an iMac that all the family use (including me).  What I want to be able to do is to have a NAS box set up with a private share for each member of the family that only they can access, plus a public share that everyone can copy files to and from.
I want to be able to access the public share from both computers at the same time.
Suppose my wife is logged on on the iMac, and she's streaming a movie from the public share using iTunes to the ATV2.  I want to be able to fast-user-switch to my account & access the files in the public share, and also my private share.
I want to be able to access files on my private share from both my macbook pro and the iMac.  At the same time.
I want family members to be able to access their private shares, and also the public share from their Windows laptops as well as the iMac.
I can't see the problem with doing these things.  As long as permissions a managed by the NAS box not the individual pcs & macs it should be easy.  But of course it isn't!
Does anyone run this sort of setup, where it works seamlessly?  If so, what sort of NAS box are you using?
If not, maybe the way to go would be to get a Mac Mini and set it up with Lion Server as a file server.  Would that work better?

You're welcome - make sure you follow Epson's instructions when you get it; don't know if they've changed it, but about 2 years ago, I had to connect it via USB first before connecting it wirelessly; also had to get the MAC address via the setup on the LCD panel so the router could recognize it.
Some of that has gotten easier/automatic with Lion, so just be sure you follow whatever the quick setup sheet says. Their support is pretty good, they usually respond within a reasonable amount of time.

  • Good firewire interfaces that work well with Macs?

Alrighty fellas, I've been trying to find a good interface to run my mics on for about 3 months now. I previously decided on presonous firepod and a audiofire pre8, but guess what... Neither of them worked haha. So I've been doing some hardcore research to try and find an interface that is more compatible with my set up. I have a budget of $700 and need at least 8 mic inputs to run my drum mics. Im currently using garage band, but will probably bump up to logic studio soon. Any advice would help so have at it haha. Thanks in advance for your help.

Baffling - I work with someone who has exactly the same 17" MacBook Pro with a AudioFire Pre8 (which is one of the best interfaces in that price range IMO) and it works great.
my mac worked with other firewire devices
Other FW audio interfaces, or just a FW drive to see if the FW 400 port was working? I'm wondering if the store knew how to set up the interface within Logic's audio preferences?

  • Can someone recommend a powerline adapter that works w/ Airport Express/AirPlay?

I recently purchased the Netgear Powerline 500 Nano PassThru Dual Port (XAVB5602-100NAS) and it works fine when I connect it to another computer in my house, but when I connect it to my 1st Gen airport express to use AirPlay through my stereo receiver the connection fails and it disconnects my internet connection over my entire network. Any suggestions? I'm trying to "hardwire" my network to my stereo because i'm getting frequent disruptions running it purely via wifi.

Let's start over, please, working from the cable modem outward.
It sounds like Express A is working fine right now with the cable modem Ethernet cable connected to the WAN port on the Express A. Test to confirm that the wireless is working on this Express.
Plug one powerline adapter into an AC socket near the location of Express A. Connect an Ethernet cable from the LAN port on Express A to the Ethernet port on the powerline adapter.
Plug the other powerline adapter into an AC socket near the location where B will be located.
Test to make sure that the Ethernet powerline adapters are working correctly.
To do this, temporarily turn off the wireless on a laptop and connect the laptop directly to the powerline adapter near the location of Express B using an Ethernet cable.
See if you can get an Internet connection on the laptop this way. If you can, then that confirms that both powerline adapters are functioning correctly. If you cannot get an Internet connection this way, more troubleshooting will be needed before we can proceed with the installation of Express B.
Post back on your progress. We'll need to know what operating system you arre using on your Mac or PC to be able to provide instructions to configure Express B.
If you have a Mac, but do not know what operating system it is running, click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen. Click About This Mac, then look for the OS X Version number and post back with that info.

  • Looking for a Personal Finance, Money Management program that works smoothly with Mac OS 10.9.4

I’m looking for something to break down my spending into categories and merchants so I can track where I’m spending and better control it.   Checked out Quicken first, but looks like Intuit is giving up on Mac integration.  Can someone experienced in Mac and Financial Programs recommend one for personal finance and money management that works well with Mac?  OSX 10.9.4.  And, I’m an English major.  Numbers and spending are my Achilles wallet.

I like Quicken personally. There is a new version in the works.

  • HD camcorder that works well with iMovie - recommendations

Any recommendation for a reasonably price HD camcorder that works well with iMovie?  I've been researching the Sony HDR-CX260V.  It's on the list of compatible cameras but says it will not work when it's set to 1080/60p.
I just want something that I can plug in and import video without a lot of hassle.
    Thanks!

Here is an Apple published list: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2948 . Just about any DV, HDV and AVCHD camcorder buit by the big Japanese manufacturer's: Canon, JVC, Panasonic or Sony will work, even the newer one's, not on the list. Don't bother with the new Sanyo if you want simple Plug-n-play. This web site: http://www.camcorderinfo.com/ratings.php# , has good reviews, so pick your priorities, costs, etc. Best of luck.

  • Controller that works well with Logic??

Can anyone tell me if the M-audio icontrol will work with Logic 8? I see that it is designed for Garageband. I would love to have real controls for record, play, stop, etc... If there is a controller out there that works well with Logic, please let me know.
    Thanks,

Potential warning on the Edirol keyboards: I bought one of their earlier ones (PCR50, I think), and the keys have mostly gone bad after a couple years, despite being treated very well. There are a lot of people over at Harmony Central reporting the same problem. This new unit may have solved the problem, don't know, but I personally will think more than twice before buying another Edirol keyboard.

  • Is there a good free qraphic equalizer that works well with iTunes?

Is there a good free graphic equalizer that works well with iTunes?

I find plenty of audio editing tools but few playback controls.
Example- The equalizer in iTunes is rather bland.
Any old stereo system has a better display.
The controls are icing on the cake for audio
but I'd pay for a complete array of adjustments.
The more lights, bells, whistles, the better.
PS-That would also make an awesome screen saver

  • I have a new Airport Extreme that works well with my IMac but is intermittent with our Windows 7 PC.  Any ideas?

I have a new Airport Extreme that works well with my IMac but is intermittent with our Windows 7 PC.  Any ideas?

Thanks planb77. Your instructions worked but I had to do a little more than you stated. I did not realize that transferring files to a new computer was not enough. When the iPod synced I was told I needed to "authorize" my new computer to get my iTunes purchases to sync to the iPod. So after the initial sync, I ejected and disconnected the iPod, went into the iTunes store, set up "home sharing" and then authorized the new computer. When that was done I reconnected the iPod and was able to sync all my books and music. The only thing I couldn't do was rename the iPod as iTunes never asked me to. Is there a way to rename it after it has been set by iTunes as "owner's iPod"?

  • Is there a list of projectors that work well with Mbp 15?

Is there a list of projectors that will work well with the MBP 15 ?

No, because almost every projector will work as well with a MB Pro as with any other computer, when the same connection protocol is used.

  • When will Adobe finally make a Flash Player that works well on Mac OS X?

Every single Mac user in the world has issues with Adobe Flash Player. Whether it be crashing, slowness or temperature bursts of the computer, everyone has some issue. Flash for Windows is a well-developed plugin and works well, unlike Mac’s version. It has been years now and Adobe has done nothing. My question is, when will something be done. Is there a way to fix all these issues, Adobe, or is that to difficult for you? Thanks and post your thoughts.

Funny, my Imac is the only box here that does NOT have issues with it,
and Im running FF 3.5.4 and Flash 10,0,32,18
ALL windows boxen are broke, and all run the latest Flash and Firefox 3.5.4
They work on the flash test site fine, but NOT on Youtube, where I need
    them most.

  • Can anyone recommend a Discussion forum that works with SSO?

    Hey,
For a medium sized customer we are in the process of trying to find a discussion forum that they can use.
I was wondering if anyone have any other discussion forums, free or not, that they have implemented and works good with SSO and access restrictions?
We need to implement access restriction based on oracle application server user groups, and have SSO sign you in both to the discussion forum, and to the portal in general.
    Grateful for any answers,

    Hi MHaddox
And welcome to apple discussions. LaCie is actually one of the better S-Drives for mac in terms of an external burner (at least from reading this forum). However, I haven't seen too much posted in terms of the Lightscribe feature itself. Perhaps one or more of these links will help (if not just come on back):

  • Can anyone recommend a printer that works well with the IMAC?

I am new to the Mac world and bought an IMAC with Iphoto08. My main reason was for printing photos and using the great graphics of an IMAC. But, I have no printer as of yet because I don't know which printer would work best with the IMAC. Please helppppppp

    Nikki,
    click on this Epson link:
    http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/consumer/consDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oi d=63059194
The 88+ is a very good inexpensive printer ..... it is temporarily "out of stock", but press the "Notify Me" button on the web page. You will also need a printer cable sold separately, but which Epson lists when you are able to order the printer.
Also check their ink jet photo-type print papers. (I do not work for Epson .... but I've used their products for years and never had any problems). I know of two instances where the printers were duds, but Customer Service replaced them without a hassle.
