Can't assign tracks to separate channels/MIDI instruments

I'm new to Logic, and I'm working on a song that so far consists of two tracks. In the environment, I created two separate MIDI instruments and assigned the keyboard for each instrument to a separate channel. The problem is that in the arrange window, both tracks automatically assign themselves to the same instrument. I've tried several times to reassign the instruments to their proper tracks, but when I reassign say instrument/channel 1 to track 1, it'll assign the same settings to track 2 and vice-versa. And then I'll look at the environment, and what should be instrument 2 will have been reassigned to instrument 1's settings, channel, etc.
I know there's a huge learning curve with this software (I was previously using Garageband so yeah...), so is there something I'm overlooking?

Linette,
Yes, in the Arrange you've created a duplicate track. So when you switch what it's pointing to, the other, of course, changes too. This is a common mistake for newcomers.
Try deleting the second track. Now use the create new track with next instrument command.

  • Routing a multi-channel midi instrument

I have Kontakt 2 with Logic express. How can I create individual audio tracks (in/outputs) without opening up another kontakt instrument for each individual channel? It says it has at least 16 midi channels so it should be able to do this.
In other words I dont want to open 5 versions of Knotakt to 5 different instrument tracks which would slow things down. I know there is a way to route the outputs via midi tracks I just don't know how? Help.

I don't know anything about Kontakt, however, I do use Addictive Drums, which is also a Multi-channel instrument. So, I can maybe draw a parallel with that.
A multi-out instrument will be able to send separate outs to your Aux busses. Keep in mind that LE will only allow 8 aux busses!!
So, what I do is assign AD to an instrument track, say instrument 1. Then, in the track mixer, on an aux bus, I select the I/O and under instrument 1, all 16 channels of AD will appear. Multi-out instruments usually start at '3'. So, I assign Addictive 3 to aux bus 1. You may have only 2 aux busses in your mixer. If that's the case, just open the Audio mixer and create more -- again, up to 8, and assign them accordingly.
Check on page 217 of the LE manual and also Kontakt's manual.
Anyway, that works for me with AD. As I am relatively new to both Macs and Logic, I'm sure someone smarter/more experienced will be able to explain it better or, even more correctly for that matter..

  • How do I record multiple midi instruments in Logic Pro simultaneously on separate tracks?sim

Hi. I am trying to record multiple midi instruments simultaneously into Logic Pro 9 through a MOTU USB Fas Lane so that it is similar to recording a live band.
    Essentially:
Track 1: Midi Keyboard - Motu Fast Lane Input A - Logic Pro - Software Instrument (Absynth)
Track 2: Midi Drum Kit - Motu Fast Lane Input B - Logic Pro - Software Instrument (Battery)
Neither Midi device can be set to a separate channel.
I would have thought this was a really common application (recoding from multiple live midi sources like a band would normally do) yet it seems unnecessarily complicated.
I gather what I would have to do involves:
    1) Going into the Environment.
    2) Creating a Physical Input
    3) Creating a Sequencer Input
    4) Placing a transofrmer between the Physical Input and the Sequencer Input
Where to go ffrom there I have not got a clue!
    Any help would be appreciated.
Incidentally I would also like to record two audio tracks at the same time as the midi track, but hoepfully that does not complicate things further.
    Thanks,
    Luke

I have it set to Performance mode which according to the owners manual: "This mode makes the XP-30 function as a multitimbral sound
source, and Performance settings can be modified. If you’re
using an external MIDI device to control the XP-30 in this
mode, it will function as a multitimbral sound source."

  • Can you play two different MIDI instruments at the same time in Garageband?

    Hi all,
I searched for a while but failed to find an answer so far: can Garageband allow you to play two tracks with two different midi instruments? When I plug my two keyboards, the 2 MIDI sources are recognized, but can only play notes on one track, not two different tracks! Is this a known limitation?
If Garageband can't play 2 midi instruments on 2 different tracks, I guess that leaves me with Logic Express...
Thanks a lot for any reply!
    Alex

Correct. GB doesn't differentiate between midi channels, that's why you can't split them to two tracks (and GB only offers one recording channel for midi at a time).

  • Can you assign MIDI instrument parameters as MIDI CC assignments (quantize, transposition, etc)?

    Hello!
Is it possible to assign MIDI controller CC assignments in a way that will allow me to control the following Logic MIDI instrument parameters via knobs on my MIDI controller?
I would love to have control over the following parameters with whatever track or MIDI region is selected:
    Quantize
    Transposition
    Velocity
    Delay
My Akai LPD8 is begging me to be able to assign these parameters as CC events with the Akai LPD8 controller editor software.
It might seem silly, but being able to twist a knob to control toggling between these drop-down parameters would make for some intuitive, hands-on creative control while in performance/creation mode, or really as a means to audition different ideas. Why should these tools be only for tedious editing?
I understand that I wouldn't be able to record these event changes as MIDI automation data, but they would be great to get a feel of what I am looking for during creative sessions.
Anyone know if this is possible? I didn't see that it was obvious to do so, though I am just getting into mapping my custom controls with Logic.
    Thanks so much!

    Thanks for the reply....
I actually tried freezing the software instrument track and that had little if no effect on CPU. I then read in the book or somewhere that the freeze function really only works on effect plugins. Don't know if that's true in all cases, but that seems to be what's happening.  Still would like to combine these tracks and I'm guessing I'm going to have to get creative with bussing or subgroups to make this happen. Unfortunately I think the fact that my Presonus board has hardmapped output routings for all the inputs makes that difficult, but haven't actually tried yet. I'm thinking if I can reroute the midi modules audio output input into the Presonus to a subgroup and then route the software instrument plug in to the same subgroup that I can then mix/capture this and hopefully route the audio's input to the subgroup to pick up the mix.
Does this make sense to anybody reading this?
We'll see and I'll post the results if it works....
    thanks...b

  • Can someone explain how to assign tracks....

First off.. I'm loving GarageBand. Love to send my stuff somewhere.. not sure where.. let me know if you know..
    ANYHOO....
one thing I'm running into is assigning tracks.
    Ch 1, 2, 3, 4 (mono), Ch 1%2, 3&4...
Here's a common scenario at my iMac.
Track 1. Turns on monitor. Plays. Nothing. huh? Assigns to ch 1. Works. changes to ch 2. doesn't work. changes to ch 3&4 doesn't work.
    Hmm.
    Finally gets it working.
Track 2. Does roughly the same thing. Doesn't work. Ok.. select another channel. works.
Adds track. wait, now my vocals are on this channel and not the original channel.
Basically, a whole dose of confusion.
Can someone describe to me why/when I would use Channel 1&2 and ch 3&4 as opposed to 1, 2, 3, 4 independently?
Can someone also tell me why when I have two tracks, one assigned to 1 mono and one assigned to 3 mono they don't both work? Shouldn't they work?
Also, seeing as I think the 1&2, and 3&4 options relate to those independent channels (1, 2, 3, 4) how do you record three or 4 instruments at a time? Where's the 5, 6, 7, 8 channels? I know you can record up to 8 tracks at a time no?
    Thanks!
    Jay

    Sorry Hangtime.....
If I understand your comment correctly, I think the answer is my audio interface tool . It only has two inputs. Of course I'd need more inputs if I wanted to record more tracks in unison, but even now, when trying to record vocals on channel one and guitar on channel 2, or 3 it doesn't seem as though they both are recognized. The tracks are there but one of the tracks won't register any input. I end up playing around with assigning different channels to the tracks until both tracks are registering input levels but it's always a crap shoot it seems. there doesn't seem to be a consistent rhyme to it.
    So there's that.
There's also the when/why you use the stereo channels as opposed to the mono channel and how exactly do they relate... i.e how does ch 1&2 relate to ch 1 (mono) and ch 2 (mono)?
    Thanks!
    Jay

I am trying to import standard midi file that I created in Band in a Box into Logic Pro 9.  I can not get all the track to play with internal instrument sounds... only the piano track.  how can I get the others to play... drums, bass etc????   Help

Don't drag the midi into an open Logic project. The tracks won't set up correctly.
'Open' the midi file with Logic as if it were a Logic project. Then all the tracks will be set up so you can start editing them and applying better saved sounds and instruments, but you'll be at a starting place where you can hear what's going on.

  • How do I reassign tracks to different channel strips? The option is not available to me via the "Assignable Checkbox"

    Hello,
I'm new to the world of sound production and Logic Pro X and have recently encountered a problem in that I cannot reassign tracks to different channel strips via the assignable checkbox. I looked at the problem in the Help section that Apple has provided, and "found the solution." All I have to do is right-click or control-click the track header and click on "Reassign Track" as demonstrated in the following link: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12919
However, when I control-click the track header, the option "Reassign Value" is not even an option, and my screen appears as follows:
Note that above "New Audio Track" there is no option to "Reassign Value" like in the link above. I have checked, and I seem to have the latest versions of Logic Pro X and my OS is up to date.
Does anybody think they have a solution? I'd really appreciate it.
    Thank You!!!

You need to enable the Advanced Features in preferences.

  • How can I capture Skype audio on a separate channel

I do interviews via skype. I currently use an external mic and USB mixing board and record with Audition CS6. But I want to record the caller's audio on a separate channel. How can I do that? Seems like there should be a way.

Back in the mists of time I did a document about this. It refers to earlier versions of Audition, but that doesn't matter because this is controlled externally from it anyway. It's not the most brilliant document in the world (the diagram is hand-drawn), but you should be able to figure out the basics:

  • DAQCard 1200: How can I send two TTL singals on separate channels with adjustable delay shortly after (typically a few milliseconds) external triggering?

Hi, this is probably a simple question, but I have never used the digital and timing part of any DAQboard before... I wish to use an old Power Macintosh 7200 with a DAQCard 1200 for timing and synchronizing external events . The scenario is as follows; an external device (in my case; a CCD camera) sends a trigger signal (TTL, 600 ns). I want this signal to trigger the DAQCard, whereafter I want the DAQCard to send two TTL pulses (20 microsecond duration) from two separate channels (one pulse from each channel). The first pulse must be sent within a few milliseconds after the trigger is recieved. Th
en I wish to be able to control the delay from the first pulse is sent and to the second pulse. This delay should preferably be adjustable from a few microseconds and up to at least 20 milliseconds. How can I achieve that kind of operation? (I need a few tips to get started.. like for instance: should I connect the external trigger signal to the EXTTRIG pin or to the gate pin of one of the counters? Do I have to interconnect the counters in some way? Do I have to invert the OUT signals? etc..)Thanks for your help in advance.
    regards,
    Michal

I have not personally used the DAQCard 1200, but if it is similar to the E-series devices, you route the trigger signal to the gates of both counters.
In your code, use the Data Acquisition->Counter->Generate Delayed Pulse VI twice, once for each counter. You can then set an input on that VI to select to trigger on the gate, and set the delay and pulse width of the pulse. Since both will start from the same trigger, you can delay either pulse as long as you wish, from microsecond to seconds, making the second pulse follow the first.

  • Multi Output instruments - can you add tracks after creation ?

Hi all, I did some reading and I tested and understand how it works.
First you create a multi timbral instrument - select how many tracks you want to use (this is my problem), then assign relevant outs within the instrument if necessary and create Aux tracks to be able to manage/edit the tracks individually in Logic instead of the soft instrument. Cool, I get that, that works.
The problem I have is, thats not how I work. My Arrange page always starts with 1 track and I add relevant tracks as I go along. I couldn't tell you in advance how many ESX24 instances I will need and the same for any other synth. What I don't want to do is create 8 multi timbral Kontakt tracks, for example, because the unused tracks will be taking up space on the Arrange page and I may well never use them. I can't work out how to add multi timbral tracks to already existing multi timbral instruments. I seem to end up with a duplicate of the original multi timbral instrumetn - not an independent track. If I have to load a new instance then fine, but I just need confirmation of what I am doing being correct or wrong.
    Cheers

    Hi
2 ways (or more) you could deal with this:
    A) Create all the Multi-Timbral tracks you might need, and Hide all but the first channel. When you need more, un-hide those required.
    B) When you create a 'normal' Instrument Channel, Logic normally assigns it to receive ALL MIDI channels. Using the Arrange:Track:New with Next MIDI Channel will create a 'dupicate' assigned to MIDI Ch 1, then 2 the next time you use  the function
For 'correct' multi-timbral operation, you do not want the "ALL" channel.
The simplest way to deal with this (if I have understood your needs), is to create the first "instance" using the New Tracks:Multi-Timbral, but with only 1 Multi T part. This creates a strip with the MIDI Input already set to Ch 1.
To create new "sub-tracks', select the 1st one, and use the Track:Create with Next MIDI Channel function.
The catch is that you MUST select the track assigned to the highest MIDI ch for that instrument, or you will have to manually adjust the channel of the new instance in the Track Prameters box in the Inspector.

  • External Midi Instruments in the Environment - Can't get things to work....

I have a MOTU MicroExpressUSB 4INx6OUT MIDI interface that's been defined as follows in my Audio/midi Setup.
    1 - Mackie HUI (I/O)
    2 - Keyboard (I/0)
    3 - Keyboard (I/0)
    4 - Roland Elect Drum Kit TD12 (I/0)
    5 - Sound Module (0 only)
    6 - Sound Module (0 only)
By itself (outside Logic), the interface triggers and appears to work fine
However, in Logic it's a different story. I've read the manual backward/forward and the environment subject is very confusing and what's not clear is how the path is connected (or cabled...) I've defined multi-instruments (with actual patch names) in my environment, I have assigned ports and sub-channels accordingly and all this is fine. Patch names come thru in pull downs, but the problem is nothing is talking to the interface thru Logic.
I've tried putting the "Port IN" object into my MIDI environment which I understand is supposed to emulate the midi interface as configured in your A/M setup. The object I got was a 4-port object that also includes a "sum" port. I'm guessing you're supposed to cable the ports to each multi-instrument assigned a port and I've done this accordingly. However, I see no way to cable the sound modules that are only Midi OUTS of my interface. This makes sense given this is a "Port IN" object, but I see no other object that would allow me to cable the outs and hence I curious how Logic will talk to the sound modules.
The manual also talks about the "sequence" object that everything has to route thru in order for Logic to process MIDI. Since the manual is not clear on how to cable this object either I took a guess and cabled the "sequence" object to the "sum" port on the "Port In" object.
This is as far as I've been able to get, but nothing is working and Logic is not talking to the interface because no interface indicator lights (ie: IN,OUT,trigger, etc). Picking a program from a pull down menu also does nothing.
It can't be that hard to control external instruments, but the manual being clear as mud has not helped. I'm sure it's something to do with this crazy environment, the way things are "cabled" or defined, but I've not been able to figure it out.
Sorry bout the book, but there's a lot of info here. Any help or insight would be appreciated.
    thanks in advance...

  • Midi Instrument Track

    Hi all,
still trying to get to grips with Logic7. I'm recording a song and I've run out of midi instruments. I can only seem to get 6 of them. If I add a track and go to the channel setting (under the toolbox) I can only access 6 of them. If I click on Instrument7 it changes Instrument 6 to instrument 7!
I've been trying for about 2.5 hours now and am fed up. Can anyone help
    Thanks
    Granger

Run the "setup assistant" and specify the amount of channels you want Logic to have available as default. Same with the Buses, and Aux, according to your needs!
You can also go to the "track" pulldown menu and add them that way, but it is just convenient to have them available from the get go.

  • Can I assign a Manager to a group, or to multiple users at the same time?

Our company uses Connect to manage internal training. At the moment, if a Manager moves on, I have to manually change the assigned Manager of each user, one at a time.
Trouble is that I am responsible for over 5000 users and each Manager is responsible for over 100 users, which makes this task a lengthy one.
    Help

    Hello B,
Are you acquiring with all 8 channels?  If not, you can use one of your unused channels as an analog trigger source, and input your digital trigger there.
Alternatively, the PCI-5105 has a RTSI connector on the rear of the board.  This connector gives you access to 8 digital RTSI lines which can be used for digital triggering.  See the following KB for more information about RTSI:
    http://ae.natinst.com/operations/ae/public.nsf/web/searchinternal/ad2d553f55a07bbf8625650d005f1f00?O...
You are correct.  You can fetch data while an acquisition is in progress.  And you can fetch more data than will fit into memory provided you set the Enable Records > Memory property to true.  Take a look at the "niScope EX Fetch In Chunks.vi" and "niScope EX Multi Record Fetch More Than Available Memory.vi" shipping examples in:
    C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 8.2\examples\instr\niScope
    I hope this helps.

Ah.. then I suspect you just need to go to Logic's prefs/Audio and check CoreAudio...
    It has been unchecked somehow...
Also.. as an aside.. Be careful not to create such large subject names in future when posting here.. They can cause issues with replying to posts in such threads.. due to a bug in the forum software.. so please keep them short and to the point...
