Can't boot anymore

Hi,
Since my Filevault file corrupted (I know filevault isn't a good idea)I can't start my Ibook anymore.
It always stuck on the gray apple screen.
So I tried the command key CMD-V to see the system load status.
I found that when my Ibook start,it stop to load at the line:
"Feb 28 18:13:24 localhost mDNSResponder[158]: mDNSResponder-58.8 (apr 24 2004 00:15:05)starting".
If someone know how to fix my problem, he/she will be a GOD for me, because I don't want to lose all my data.
Thanks

Try things in Mac101 (no offense) and Apple doc.#106464 for your startup issue.
Also, try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption. His link will help walk you thru it.
Cheers!

  • [solved] power outage on SSD - can't boot anymore

    Hi,
I just had a power outage, battery was unplugged. Boot process stops on the rescue prompt.
The last line of journalctl -xb says :

Well, I see a lot is beeing said about run levels and systemd. Like many of you, if I had the use of init, I have to learn more about systemd before to be at ease. For the moment I'm still quiet buffled.
For now, I can give you relevant red or bold lines I find in journalctl -b --full.

  • Contact with laptop, can't boot anymore

I'm crossing my fingers that someone might know how I can get my computer working again.  I accidentally sat on the screen of my open laptop which was on my couch and that sent the keyboard swinging up which made hard contact with my elbow to the right of the mousepad.  I checked the screen right after and I could move the cursor for a few seconds and then it froze, so I restarted my computer which leaves me at a black screen for maybe half a minute, the Toshiba screen pops up, followed by some code that says something with PCI Family Systems, then I get a boot menu that says:
    HDD/SSD
    CD/DVD HL-DT-ST-CT30F
    FDD
    LAN
    <Enter BIOS Setup>
My laptop is a Satellite M645 by the way.  Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.  THANKS!!!

That's not your full model number. It should be on the label on the bottom.
What happens if you pick "HDD/SSD" from the boot menu?

  • I can't boot my Mac anymore

    That's pretty much the problem.
You see, it's an iMac from the Late 2007 If I'm not mistaken. It's pretty much the third time I've had to renstall the whole software, the first time for unknown reasons and the second because everything within was deleted, out of the blue.
This time around, I'm told (by family at home) that the computer froze, and they used the safest method to turn it off, a.k.a. Press the power button for several second until it turned off. Ever since it didn't boot anymore.
I press the power button and THE flashing folder with a question mark pops up after some seconds, and that's pretty much all I can do. I've tried booth in Safe Mode (with Shift), booting in Recovery HD (Command-R) and even tried Startup Manager (Option key), but i only get a floating cursor and nothing else happens. Literally nothing else happens.
I thought it was the HDD Finally crashing, so I left it alone for some time, and incredibly the next time I tried it booted perfectly. As if nothing had happened. But it froze again, we had to power it down as mentioned above and this is my third day trying. No success except for that bit of magic.
Now, the Mac doesn't really have any important information anymore, and I don't have a Time Machine backup either, but it'd be nice if my files didn't erase this time around. To be honest it sounds like the HDD finally died, but again, it booted normally after one night, sadly not anymore. I personally have my suspicions on the cable, but I'm not the expert.
Any help? Thank you in advance!

  • Can't boot into windows 7 anymore......

Hi all, I have a Mac mini late 2012 with windows7 installed through bootcamp5. It has worked flawless until recently, now I can't boot into windows anymore. I've checked in finder and the bootcamp partition is present and also all the files. Before that, I did have some trouble with my LaCie 2big thunderbolt hdd, it kept on saying I had to reformat one of the discs in the drive, but only when used in windows, in OSX there was/are no problems reading the hdd .......
Any idea of how I can make windows bootable again?, do I really have to make a fresh install of windows to make it work??
Any help is very much appreciated

  • Can't boot Mac Os 10.7 (Lion) to 64-bit mode anymore

Can't boot Mac Os 10.7 (Lion) to 64-bit mode anymore, after booting to 32-bit.

I was able to resolve the problem by installing Flash Player 11.7.700.169 from the direct download installer:

  • 10.4.6 - can't boot from OS 9 partition or start up disk anymore ??

I have an OS 9.2.2 partititon as well as my 10.4.6 partititon on my main HD, plus a seperate HD which has 2 partitions on it. I have a Digital Audio G4 which has a Powerlogix 1.4Gb 7457 cpu in it.
I use my Mac for music. I want to boot up in from the 9.2.2 partition to run Nortons to defrag my other HD which I use to save all my audio files on. My Nortons will not run in Classic mode.
    I haven't done this for a while, since 10.4.4 I think.
So no matter what I try, I can't boot up from my OS 9.2.2 partition via Start Up disc OR from my Nortons OS 9 start up CD. I just get a grey screen after the start up chime. Start Up Disc in 10.4.6 recognizes the OS 9.2.2 partition...
I really find it difficult to accept that 10.4.6 should stop me from being able to boot up from the Nortons disc but that is what it is starting to look like to me.
I can still use Classic mode in 10.4.6 and run OS9 applications in Classic.
Is it a 10.4.6 issue and would I solve it by downgrading to say 10.4.4 ??

    Hi Murray;
I disagree with your comment; "I appreciate
Nortons is "ancient" but that's not really the
    issue.".
I think it could very well be the issue. > Allan
    src="http://homepage.mac.com/eckertallanp/2313.gif"
    alt="tiger" align="right">
Thanks Allan. With all due respect I can't understand at all how Nortons could be the issue, at least so far as it relates to the bootable CD I have with 9.2.2 on it.
This morning I tried booting from the System disc that came with my G4 when I purchased it. It has a 9.1 System folder on it.
The start up disc preference in 10.4.6 recognized th 9.1 disc as an option but, just like trying to start from my 9.2.2 partition and the Bootable disc with 9.2.2 (and Nortons 6.0) on it, I could not get past the grey screen.
I was able to boot from the Apple Hardware Diagnostic disc or whatever it is called and the test results said that all was well.
I am at the office now (heaven forbid using Windows) but when I get home tonight I am actually going to try zapping the PRAM because I am staring to think it may be that.
Funny, zapping the PRAM used to be a standard tool in my OS7/8/9 days...kind of forgot it as an OSX tool but I have a funny feeling that might actually be the problem.
    cheers

  • Can't boot to Tiger anymore!!!

I thought I was clever. Before upgrading to Leopard I backed up a bootable image of 10.4.10 to a firewire drive, into its own partition. THEN I tested that I could boot from it, and it worked fine.
So I upgraded to Leopard and checked that I could still boot to Tiger from the firewire drive, and it worked fine.
So I upgraded to 10.5.1 and NOW I can't boot from the image to Tiger. It LOOKS like it's booting but I get a bunch of terminal-type error messages that go whipping by and it never does boot. I've tried it a lot of times and it just doesn't work.
    Any ideas why?

    jnikki
Sorry to hear this. You did a complete erase, not just an Archive/Install then? And it still didn't work!!!
Blimey! Well, at least Apple know about it now.
Just for your information - Monday or Tuesday I upgraded to 10.5.2. I tried out Font Book, found I still had this problem but was able to send that report I mentioned.
When I came home from work on Wednesday my wife informed me that a woman who claimed to be representing Apple Computers rang for me, but didn't say what it was about. My wife, of course, informed her that I wasn't available until I got home. The caller said she would ring back later.
It's now Friday evening, the caller hasn't come back (yet) and I am sooooo intrigued as to what Apple wanted to speak with me about.

  • I need help with my Macbook Pro... I can't boot it up because of a Kernal Panic.

Like the title says... I know there are some computer savy people especially with Macs on here so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Okay I will try my best to describe my problem...
I believe it was either Saturday or Sunday that the problem first happened.
I was watching a video on a site and I don't remember if I expanded to full screen, but the computer like froze up and a dark grey curtain fell over the screen that was somewhat translucent and this message popped up.
So since it's a 2008 MBP I have no restart button so I decide to hold down the power button until it shuts off and then turn it on again... same message appears... I do this like 3-5 more times and still the same thing.  So I decide to let it sit for a while, which turned into a day because I had to go to work, and while at work I started looking for solutions.
Came home and tried a solution that work... temporarily... I held the X button upon startup and it worked and I then ran start up disk like it said to on the troubleshooting I learned from Google.  Thought all was well... so I decide to venture back to said site that's just like flash players like youtube, but with more geared towards young adolescences.  Things were good for a little and then the problem started happening again and more frequent.
I kept doing the hold X thing and it work like 1-2 more times and now that Kernel Panic screen doesn't go away at all and I can't boot up the MBP at all.
I tried doing the thing where you hold X at start up... no luck!
I tried holding down shift at start up to boot into safe mode and it still doesn't work.
I tried some PRAM thing where you hold down cntrl + option + p + r and that didn't work.
I don't even know what operating system I'm on because the MBP won't boot up for me to see the system info.
Anyone ever had this problem or know how to fix it... I'm not covered under warranty anymore so before I take it into Apple and the use the KY on me I figured I ask on here to see if anyone can help me remedy this problem.
Thanks any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Can't boot from external HD with Leopard on MacBook Pro or PowerBook

I can't boot from an external HD with 10.5.5 Leopard on either my MacBook Pro or my PowerBook G4. I had a PowerBook G4 from which I could boot from either an external FW400 drive or an external FW800 drive. At some point, I stopped being able to boot from any HD, but I'm not sure if it was after upgrading to Leopard or not? Recently I just bought a MacBook Pro 15" and transferred all my files over from the PowerBook to the MacBook Pro during the install. However, even with the new computer, still cannot boot from an external drive. I have Leopard 10.5.5 running on both the external HD and the internal HD.
Is this a common problem? Anybody know how to fix it?
    Thanks!

That probably wasn't very clear was it? I have several ext. HD's, some with bootable systems and some just backups. One bootable disk was made with CopyCloner and the other was a clean format and only had an original install of the OS just to use for an emergency boot. They both booted just fine. Then at some point, they stopped being bootable. I have used the Control Panel "Startup" and also used the Option key boot and picked the bootable disk. Neither one boots anymore. It started doing this on the old PowerBook and then also refused to boot on the MacBook Pro. This is not the problem with the HD since it happens with any bootable HD. Something is going on at the system level and it was transfered from the PowerBook to the MacBook.
    Thanks,
    Bill

  • Can't boot off Apple Hardware Test disk

Can anyone suggest why my laptop won't boot off of its Apple Hardware Test disk anymore? I have not tried it in years, but want to try now. I have the original, and a copy I made years ago, and neither will boot. I can select them at startup disks in that preference pane in OSX, but then it fails to find it, and boots into OSX. I can boot into OS9 on the hard drive. I was able to partially boot off of a different AHT disk from my 12" Albook G4, but it gave the message that I can't use that disk since it is not meant for the Tibook. One idea is that TechTool tells me that "macintosh startup file was absent", and the Help file states:
"The Startup file is intended for use by systems that do not have built-in ROM support for booting from HFS Extended volumes. The first eight extents of the Startup File are stored in the Volume Header. This makes them easy to locate and read into memory. This file contains information used by the computer’s ROM to determine what program will boot the computer. In almost every case, this will be configured to point to the preferred System."
But it does not tell me how to restore this Startup file.
-how can i get my startup file back?
-my computer boots fine off the hard drive, so is this file used only to boot off a CD?
-any ideas why i can't boot off my AHT CD?

Hi, t. (That alias of yours sure is a mouthful.) I think in your shoes I would pose the question to the tech support people at Micromat (TechTool's developer). It's their error message, after all, and they should be able to explain it to you in as much detail as you need. Perhaps they'll shed some light on the original problem in the process.

  • Can't boot to windows, stuck at black screen (with cursor)

Hi! I'll get straight to my problem: I can't boot to Windows (Windows 10 Technical Preview) anymore after installing VirtualBox (or rather, an Android emulator that installed VirtualBox) on my system. I get stuck, after the loading animation with the blue HP logo, on a black screen (I can move my cursor around) but the login screen never shows up.
    The problem.
I'm currently dual-booting linux and windows for several purposes. My laptop came with a Windows 8.1 OS by default. Some time after the Windows 10 Tech Preview came out to public, I upgraded my system to Windows 10 (so my 8.1 is gone now). Everything's going well until I installed this Android emulator (which installed VirtualBox) on Windows 10. Everything seemed fine at first but after rebooting, Windows isn't working anymore. I can still boot to linux, but Windows just won't boot properly.
    What I've tried.
I've tried A LOT of things. The problem actually happened twice already (at first I was able to fix it with System Restore but not this time around). I have a Windows 8 USB Recovery Drive at hand, just so I can access a Windows command line. It's not from my system, though. It came with a new windows 8 laptop of a friend so I just borrowed it.
1: System Restore. This worked the first time. But now the restore won't finish and throws an error, telling me that it can't restore my system.
2: Refresh PC. "There was a problem refreshing your PC. No changes were made." or something like that.
3: chkdsk on C:\. It says it changed some files, but it doesn't really fix the problem.
4: sfc /scannow. Again, something happened, but it didn't get fixed.
5: bootrec.exe to fix BCD and MBR. Doesn't work. (as far as I know my sytem is using GPT)
6: Hard reset (remove all power sources then hold power button). Still not working.
7: System Restore again. All the restore points aren't working. It reaches a "Finished" state, but then an error comes up after. It says can't extract a specific file, and the restore point is damaged or might have been deleted during restore.
8: checking and fixing bad sectors (nope, no bad sectors on my hard drive)
9: built-in component tests. It passed all of them, except the battery test (my battery really isn't surviving for any duration longer than 30 minutes, but that shouldn't affect my OS). I didn't try the really long tests since I thought it wouldn't matter as my problem is most probably completely software (since linux is still working).
10: cry. oh please. Windows isn't working. What should I do? (
    Things I haven't tried.
1: RAM and CMOS battery reset.
    2: Reset PC.
    3: Format hard drive.
4: Test hard drive on another laptop's system.
If possible I'd like to avoid getting my hard drive wiped, since I have a lot of stuff to backup (more than 300 GB of files + dozens of linux apps and ppas), and I only have a 32GB USB drive to backup all the files I need).
    Thanks for reading.

Sorry for the delay. Wasn't expecting the "road work" signs when attempting to check back with you in the AM here.
As others have already mentioned, the prompt for file systems occurs during text mode setup. Quick or Full? FAT or NTFS? How do you know what to do?
We'll start with file systems, short and sweet. Most any OS can read and write FAT volumes without fail which makes FAT ultra-portable, and the only choice if you want to let Mac OS write documents on your Windows volume. It's also more efficient on drives of 16 GB or less. However, FAT has no folder-level access control, so any file in the system can be manipulated by any user or by any system process. By contrast, NTFS is far more restrictive. It can only be manipulated under Windows, though other systems may be able to read it. Not only do you get the access control that FAT lacks, but you also get superior efficiency on large volumes, plus the power to compress or encrypt folders and files at will (in "business" flavors of Windows only--and yes, Vista Ultimate counts as "business" even though it will be supported much like a "consumer" version).
On format speeds: A quick format is very handy if you have a large partition or a single drive completely dedicated to Windows. Because it completes in 30 seconds or less, it will go a long way toward completing your Windows install. However, in some cases, volumes formatted with a quick format may have reliability issues. They must have fixed this in Vista, because Vista can only format at the "quick" speed.
A full format tests all blocks of a given volume (as opposed to testing an entire disk unless the volume itself is the entire disk) as the file system structure is laid down. Bad blocks are marked as "used" when they are found. This type of format takes much longer as a result of all the testing, but the result is a more stable volume from the start.
Get past the formatting stage, and you'll be right as rain.
    Nate
