Can't change firewall rules via preferences pane

When I select the Sharing preferences and switch to "Firewall", I get the following error (in German): "Sie können die Firewall-Einstellungen nicht ändern, da beim Lesen der Einstellungen von Ihrem System ein Fehler aufgetreten is", which actually means something like "You can't change your firewall settings because an error occured while reading your settings".
The error doesn't go away even after rebooting.

I assume you have specified german as your default language, because if you haven't then german error is quite odd.
Anyway, have you installed any other firewall software? Something has probably caused your firewall settings to either disappear or to change in a way that mac os x cannot read them.

  • Cannot change graphics mode/Old preference pane

Just received my new Macbook Pro 2.53. Loaded up just great was able to use all the features, but after transferring all of my old data via ethernet I cannot change the graphics card mode! I no longer have the option to. I have the OLD 'Energy Saver' preference pane! I do not even have the larger graphics card under the system profiler.
    Any ideas?
    Running build 10.5.5 9F2114

After a lengthy call with a rep at applecare, checking this, sending that. He had me remove the battery, unplug the wall outlet and hold the power button for 7 seconds. Popped the battery back in, plugged in the AC and it's back!
It wasn't so much I had an "old energy saver" pane, but rather the new one wasn't recognizing the 2nd video card.

  • Mountain Lion: can't open Mail, Contacts & Calendars preference pane

    Hi guys,
I downloaded Mountain Lion this morning and am loving it. But I'm having a problem that so far I can't find anything about here or elsewhere on the web: I cannot open the Mail, Contacts & Calendars preference pane in System Preferences. Instead I get 1 of 2 error messages. The first says simply that it couldn't load this preference pane (see attached pic), while the second says it cannot open it because this service is not available on Intel-based Macs.
The weirdest thing is that I WAS able to open this pane at least once right after downloading ML. I know that it looks the same as this setting in the Settings iOS app, and I even unchecked some of the options for my gmail and exchange email accounts (chose not to sync notes, calendars, etc. with all those accounts since I just use iCloud now).
I've tried restarting System Preferences, and my computer, multiple times... no luck. Any ideas?!?
    THANKS!
P.S.- I've got a mid-2009 MBP that meets the specifications for ML.

Unfortunately my above message does NOT solve my original Mail, Contacts and Calendars problem, which continues. Here's a pic of the other message I routinely received (below)...
Is anyone else having this problem???

You can't change your background to a file on the internet, only a local file (what would happen, for example, if you weren't connected to the internet?)
The simple soluton is to download the image to your system (which you can do any number of ways via AppleScript) and then use your existing AppleScript to set the desktop to the newly-downloaded file.
    do shell script "/usr/bin/curl -o ~/Desktop/picture1.png http://some.server.net/path/to/image.png"
    tell application "Finder"
set desktop picture to file "picture1.png" of (get path to desktop)
    end tell

  • Can you change the ruler color of grey to be an actual color?

So in Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign, can you change the rulers to be something other then the boring grey. I mean can you change it to actual be a color? If yes, how? If no, Adobe really needs to implement this. I think to have the rulers be in a color would help greatly for visibility.
Thanks for any help. Thought perhaps there may be an easter egg or trick possibly to do this.

In my pages the shapes are green with a black line. Yo can change it by clicking on the format bar. See image. You can also change it in the Inspector palette > Graphic tab > Fill
You could create a document with all the shapes int the right colour and save as a document or template. Then you can use it by "copy and paste" the shapes into a new document

  • Changing firewall rules

I'm running Tiger and I'm trying to find out for someone using Leopard (who is not adept at using computers to learn themselves but also lives too far for me to go to their home and help) and they need to open a port so that he and I can play an online game together.
The only thing is, the System Prefs interface seems to have changed drastically and using anything I could find on google (even screenshots) I couldn't figure out how to add custom rules.
So I'll keep it really brief and ask if someone can either just explain quickly where to go to add a custom rule or if there's a help page? I've done searches but the internet is saturated with unrelated material.

This is from Mac Help in leopard:
Setting firewall access for services and applications.
Mac OS X includes a firewall: a security measure that protects your computer from connections initiated by other computers when connected to a network or the Internet. If you turn on a sharing service, such as file sharing, Mac OS X opens a specific port in the firewall for the service to communicate through. When you open the Firewall pane of Security preferences, any sharing services turned on in Sharing preferences, such as File Sharing or Remote Apple Events, appear in the list.
In addition to the sharing services you turned on in Sharing preferences, the list may include other services, applications, and programs that are allowed to open ports in the firewall. An application or program might have requested and been given access through the firewall, or might be signed by a trusted certificate and therefore allowed access.
IMPORTANT: Some programs have access through the firewall although they don’t appear in the list. These might include system applications, services, and processes. They can also include digitally signed programs that are opened automatically by other programs. You might be able to block these programs’ access through the firewall by adding them to the list.
To add an application to the list, select “Set access for specific services and applications” in the Firewall pane of Security preferences, click Add at the bottom of the list, and then select what you want to add. After the program is added, click its up and down arrows to allow or block connections through the firewall.
NOTICE: Blocking a program’s access through the firewall could harm the program or other programs that depend on it, or affect the performance of other applications and services you use.
When the system detects a connection attempt to a program that is not enabled in Security preferences or not signed, a dialog will ask you if you want to allow or deny access to the program. If you do not respond, the program is added to the list in the Firewall pane of Security preferences, and the access is set to “Allow only essential services.”

  • Change firewall settings via terminal

    hi,
I've got an old Powerbook that has a broken screen. Luckily I can access all my files and also ssh into the computer. Is it possible to open the firewall port 7001 via the command-line so I can use something like Desktop Transporter?
    Thanks for any reply.

    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Yes, of course. First question, though: why not take the firewall down altogether?
The thing is, ipfw uses sets of rules, and the order is significant, so it's not just adding a rule, it's where you add the rule. So, for example, if I see:
    <pre>
    $ sudo ipfw list
02000 allow ip from any to any via lo*
02010 deny ip from 127.0.0.0/8 to any in
02020 deny ip from any to 127.0.0.0/8 in
02030 deny ip from 224.0.0.0/3 to any in
02040 deny tcp from any to 224.0.0.0/3 in
02050 allow tcp from any to any out
02060 allow tcp from any to any established
02065 allow tcp from any to any frag
02070 allow tcp from any to any dst-port 22 in
02080 allow tcp from any to any dst-port 548 in
02090 allow tcp from any to any dst-port 427 in
02100 allow tcp from any to any dst-port 80 in
02110 allow tcp from any to any dst-port 427 in
02120 allow tcp from any to any dst-port 443 in
02130 allow tcp from any to any dst-port 21 in
02140 allow tcp from any to any dst-port 139 in
12190 deny tcp from any to any
65535 allow ip from any to any
    </pre>
Obviously, you need to add your rule before the blanket deny rule, so enter:
$ sudo ipfw add 02150 allow tcp from any to any dst-port 7001 in
Or you could do a rule like:
$ sudo ipfw add 02005 allow ip from ME to any in
Where ME is your IP address (or MAC yo:ur:ma:ca:dd:re:ss) to allow all access from your computer. Unwise because both are easily spoofed, but you can delete it as soon as you're done:
    $sudo ipfw delete 02005

  • HP Laserjet P2035n is set to print double-sided, but I can't change it in the preferences

Last week i downloaded and printed a PDF file. Since then, my HP Laserjet 2035n is set to print double-sided. Here are the details.
I'm running an HP Pavilion Laptop with Windows 7 Home.
The printer is set up as a network printer.
When I try to print something, it stops after one page waiting for me to re-feed the paper manually to print on the other side.
It's only this laptop that's messed up. My other computer prints fine
When I go to Printers, right click on the 2035n, and select "Printer Properties" and look at the bottom of the General tab, it reads under Features "Double Sided: Yes"
If I then click 'Preferences..." and go to the Finishing tab, under Document Options, the box "Print On Both Sides (Manually)" box is unchecked.
    Here's what I've tried:
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the printer
    I reinstalled the printer drivers
I have tried reinstalling under a different name
Any suggestions? Can someone tell me where the printer preferences file is so I can manually delete it then reinstall the printer drivers? Is there a tool for the P2035N to uninstal EVERYTHING related to it?
    Thanks.
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
    Please try the following settings:
Right click the printer icon, then click Printer Properties.
    Click the Device Settings tab.
At the very bottom, uncheck the Allow Manual Duplexing option.
Now try printing and check for any change.
Please let me know of any change,

  • How can I stop my screen saver preferences pane from freezing up? every time i try to access it I get the spinning beach ball. Running 10.8.4

Every time I open the desktop/screensaver pane in system preferences it freezes. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

That's caused by a bug in automatic login, which corrupts the Desktop settings file, so delete it.
Open a Finder window, select Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type ~/Library/Preferences. Then, delete "com.apple.desktop.plist" and "com.apple.systempreferences.plist", and restart. OS X will create a new Desktop file in the next startup

  • Can't change my Port under preferences

    For some reason.
I have chosen my server for outgoing mail, but when I go to advanced to type in the appropriate Port #, the number that is there is shaded and I can't type there. I click the SSL checkbox on and off and the port number changes but incorrectly both times.
Is there a way I can control what port I wanna send my mail through?
    Thanks

You do not have to set up your mail again.
If you scroll down far enough in the screenshots it tells how to access
    the smtp server settings.
NOT on the advanced tab, but under the 'account information' tab.
On the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) pop-up menu (close to bottom )select Edit Server List.
Result: The SMTP Server Options window opens. This window should let you change
    the port smtp uses.
You are not trying to change the smtp port in the correct location if you are seeing the port number 143 was my point.
