Can't choose disk in Startup Disk?

Why might a disk not be available to choose in the Startup Disk prefpane?
After a restart, my Xserve (Xserve1,1) started up on the bootable clone (Bay 2) I keep up-to-date with Carbon Copy Cloner. The original system drive (Bay 1) is visible and mounted. I can read from it and write to it and I've verified the disk and repaired permissions. However, I can not choose it in the Startup Disk prefpane.
This is the hardware report for the original system drive:

  • I need help choosing a different startup disk

I've recently replaced my MacBook hard drive, and am now unable to choose a partitioned section for my startup disk.
I created two partitions on the new hd, then copied all files from my old hd onto one of the partitions. Everything works wonderfully...as long as the old hd is attached as an external hd. System Preferences->Startup Disk shows only the old hd and a network as an option. The new hd does not appear in the Startup Disk at all.
I've restarted holding down the option key with the same result. I can choose from the old hd or EFI (which does nothing). If I detach the old hd while the power is off, I am given no options on restart. Mac just freaks out.
Any help will be greatly appreciate.

You can't do it this way. A large part of what makes your OS System bootable is the underlying Unix Structure. This would not have been copied. To facilitate a bootable copy you can use a number of methods. Disk Utility > Restore will do it for you as will CarbonCopyCloner. Both of which are free. If you want to spend money SuperDuper is something you should consider.

  • Can't free up enough startup disk memory

    Hi,
"Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory."
I am trying to free up space to stop this message from popping up on my screen. I've emptied my trash, but the problem isn't gone.
    I have a iMac with OS X 10.6.8, with 4GB of Memory.
My local disk capacity is 499.76 GB and i am only using 179.07GB.
I am unsure how to remove temporary files, even though i am clearing temp files from my browser's history.
I don't know which program can be reliable and safe to remove the temp files for me
I'll appreciate if someone can help.

Reboot to clear out virtual memory.
Your problem is excessive swapping of data between physical memory and virtual memory.
That can happen for two reasons:
You have a long-running process with a memory leak (i.e., a bug), or
You don't have enough memory installed for your usage pattern.
Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination. In Activity Monitor, select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Click the heading of the  Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
    from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more memory over time without ever releasing it.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details:

  • Can't locate volume in Startup Disk Options...?

Ok I am sure this is so basic that I have missed something glaringly obvious. I have added a second drive to my G5, created a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Volume on it, and it's showing up in the finder as a volume. However, I want to use it as the startup disk since it's much bigger & newer than my original drive. But when I go into 'Startup Disk' in System Preferences, it's not there to choose. All I have is a folder referring to Mac OSX on my older volume, and a Network Startup icon with a question mark on it. What do I do?

You have to install OSX on the drive to use it as a startup volume. You could do this from your install DVD, or clone your existing drive to the new drive with SuperDuper!

  • Can't create a Tiger startup disk on an external drive

After backing up the applications and data files to DVD’s I installed Leopard on my Power Book PPC G4. Everything went without a hitch. Now I would like to create a Tiger startup disk on a USB drive. When I try to format the USB drive with the OS 10.4 disk that came with the laptop I get a message that says “Unable to find system 10.3 or later” just prior to the step that lets you pick the drive you wish to format. I would like to be able to startup in system 10.4 so I can run an older version of 4th Dimension in the Classic mode. Is there a way to accomplish this now that I have already successfully installed Leopard?

I quickly scanned your profile before posting the link to that KB article, and could have sworn that I saw an Intel-based Mac there... In any case, many people have successfully booted OS X from USB drives on PPC Macs. It's certainly not as good or reliable as using a FireWire drive, but you can read various reports about it here and by Googling something like +PPC Mac boot USB+. You'll come up with a lot of information, so I don't understand other posters denying it can be done...
    Good luck.

  • Can't choose Raptor as boot disk

Just got my BTO Mac Pro yesterday. I installed a 74GB Raptor to format as a startup disk, but the OS X installer says I can't boot from that drive and thus can't install OS X on it. Is it because it is only 1.5Gb/s, does it have to be 3Gb/s? I can't find any documentation on this site for boot disk requirements.

There was a problem with the original firmware in the 150GB Raptor and booting from a stripped RAID on G5s. I know that isn't your situation, but these things can be tricky.
There are people using the 150GB Raptor on Mac Pro.
There is no restriction on using 1.5Gb (SATA 1.0) drives, and people have moved their older SATA drives and they do work.
The WD Raptor 74GB - which firmware and how old? did you use it in your G5?
The 74GB model doesn't use NCQ but a WD flavor of TCQ.
Also is not a true native SATA drive but used a bridge.
I'll have to look to see if it has only the old 4-pin molex power plug or if it has the new SATA power connector as well (most WD drives have both).
Did you go into Disk Utility first to format the drive?
And it sees it but won't?
First thing I would do, and worked sometimes on G5s, was to just reboot and then try again as sometimes a drive would then be available.
Are you doing an ERASE and INSTALL? and is there anything on the drive now?
If it is new, make sure it is the latest, and WD has also now come out with a new 74GB based on the 150GB model, that has 16MB cache.

  • Can I set up a startup disk for another computer?

My mom has an iMac and apparently the internal disk has failed. Starts up with the disk and question mark, and running the Disk Utility can't access or format it.
I was going to get an external disk for her to use as a startup disk and was wondering if I can set it up from my computer then send it to her to use with hers. I have an iBook G4 and it would be much easier for me to connect the new drive to my computer, install Mac OS X on it, set up accounts, then install updates. I have DSL and she has dialup, so downloading updates on her system literally takes all night.
I guess I'm wondering if the installer gears the system to work with the hardware it's being run on, or if it doesn't really matter.
    Thanks for any input.
    Dan

    Dan:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
If your Mom's computer supports Firewire, and meets the minimum system requirements for Tiger or the minimum system requirements for Panther depending on which system you plan to install, it should be fine. In terms of the legality, I am not sure if having the system installed on an external HDD runs afoul of the Software License Agreement which statesThis License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single computer at a time. This License does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time...On the other hand if you Mom has the install disk and just can't get it on the internal HDD, there should be no problem.
Please don't hesitate to post back with further questions.
    Good luck.

  • Erasing a OS 8.5.1 hard disk: no startup disk

I have an old but working MacPro 7200 that I wanted to recycle but wanted to zero the hard disk first. Unfortunately, I no longer have the startup disks for the 7200 or my 8.5.1 installation disk (the OS that is on the machine.) All my other Macs are at least OS X.4.11.
Is there any way to do this other than removing the hard drive and hitting it with a hammer?
    Thanks.
    ph

You can access the links Grant referred to on this Apple webpage -
OS 8.1 Update & Disk Tools
Another possibility to do what you want to do is to remove the hard drive and place it in another Mac as a second drive, then use OSX's Disk Utility to deep wipe the drive. If you do that, be sure to set the format as Mac OS Extended (not journaled), and to select the option to install OS 9 drivers.
Note that in order for it to use a volume formatted as Mac OS extended the OS must be 8.1 or later. Your PM7200 can use any OS 8 version, and OS 9 versions up to and including OS 9.1.

  • Adobe Photoshop Scratch Disk Full/Startup Disk Full error - PLEASE HELP

    Dear ALL,
I have started to notice recently that when I run Photoshop CS on my Mac OSX Tiger, I am getting the Startup Disk Full error message. Never happended before.
Since my initial post I downloaded Macaroni (utility) and have run the daily/weekly/monthly backups, checked the /private/var/vm and /private/var/log and /Volumes. Nothing unusual there...
When I started getting this error I had 32GB left on a looked at my HD and I seem to have 32GB available on a 152GB drive. Now after deleting I have 76GB capacity left.
But when I tried to open a Photoshop PSD or TIFF file and do a crop I still get tge Startup Disk is Full error followed by the Adobe Photoshop error Scratch Disk is Full.
I am thinking of running the Disk Utility from the Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and doing a Verify Disk and Verify Disk Permissions followed by Repair Disk Permissions. I will be logged into the machine whilst doing this. Is there any danger in this as I have read elsewhere that I need to do this from a bootable volume. If that is the case how do I create a bootable disk/cd? If not then what is the cure to my Disk Full as surely there is now nearly 50% FREE!!!!!
    Please help.
    Max

PS will always use the boot disk for scratch to some extent even with an alternate primary scratch disk.
Be sure to turn off Spotlight as it causes problems.
4GB of RAM would be nice, I understand small files don't work well if there is more than 4GB RAM but large files will. OS X uses free RAM as cache and RAM disk before using disk drives.
How much RAM is allocated to PS? More RAM would help.
A dedicated lean boot drive helps. Install just what is needed for your work, use a separate drive for data, and yet another RAID volume for scratch.
When in doubt, backup with SuperDuper, and do an erase and then restore. Always backup before repairing; and never, ever, use an old version of Tiger CD/DVD - like 10.4.2 on 10.4.7/.8. Use "fsck" instead, or your emergency boot drive.
Also, give Applejack a shot and delete the cache folders and swap files from time to time to keep a system humming. CS/CS2 and Tiger benefit nicely from more RAM.

  • Can't connect using differnet startup disk!

I archived everything to wipe some drives clean and manually migrate. Its done wonders to speed up my Quicksilver G4.
I reinstalled Tiger on the old orginal drive (should fail sometime soon; its five years old) and also on a Maxtor 120g (much newer). Strangely, I can't connect when using the Maxtor as the startup drive. Network diagnostics tell me that my ethernet cables aren't connected, among other oddities, such as constantly changing data in the Setup Assistant pane.
When I installed Tiger on the Maxtor, communication with Apple and .Mac was fine (retrieved all account info), but Safari wouldn't connect.
The Maxtor used to have two partitions and was my main startup drive which I archived and zeroed out.
It gets stranger. My MacPro also won't connect if the G4 is unable to connect using the Maxtor! When I go back to using the original IBM Apple drive, everything connects beautifully.
When trying to access the router via browser, using the IBM of course is fine, but using the newly formatted Maxtor, I can't gain access.
MacPro and G4 are connected via ethernet to a DLink DI 624; ISP is Verizon FIOS (which is killer, btw).
Any ideas are much appreciated. BD Aqua?

In passing I'll mention that different brand Drives mixed can have bizarre results with CS or M/S, and though Apple swears you should use CS, (some drives won't boot if NOT CS), I've had to do the opposite on some of mine... or seperate them to different buses.
Back to the problem, (not sure it's a good install because of the Mix!), but 1st I'd get what's my ip...
    http://www.whatsmyip.org/
If that didn't work then I'd try trashing...
/Users/nnnn/Library/Preferences... the whole Prefs folder there.
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration... the whole SysConfig folder.
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleFileServer.plist
Reboot... of course you dont have to trash them, you can just move them to the desktop to drag back if it doesn't work.
If that doesn't work, I'd ZERO the drive and reinstall.
PS.How long ago where you here_ I think you wouldn't care for little LA that runs from Canada to Oregon now!
