Can't close big documents or open images

Hi, I can't seem to close a couple of big documents I have open at the moment, I just get the spinning cursor. I also can't open any attachments or images I've saved and get a comment that 'preview is not available.' Any advice?

Highlight one of the documents that you're trying to open and Get Info (Command and I keys held down) and see what app the files are supposed to open with....
If Preview... then it looks as though you're 'missing' Preview somehow.
As to why you may be getting the spinning beachball when try to save large documents... how much free space do you have on your drive?

You can't open it directly. You need to either export it from within Pages, or rename the saved file so its extension is zip, decompress it, and get what you can from the contents.

Can't close Word document from dock

I've never tried this before until now. I minimized several Word documents which places each one of them in the dock. When I select each document in the dock, "Close" is an option that appears, but when I select "Close", nothing happens. To close the document, I must click the document to open the window and then close the document.
Why won't the document close as the command would imply?

As I said, when the Application Word is launch from the Application ore directly from one of the Word documents that I keep in the Dock for direct access, the only option I have is "Show in Finder".
I just checked out, that it makes no differences when Word Application is already launch ore still close, there is only one option.
* By single clicking on the Word document I can open the Application Word.
* No more nor less.
For closing a active Word document you can use "command-W"

How can I close a document without saving changes?

I'm using Pages 4.3 with OS10.9.1.
Before I upgraded to OS10.9.1, when I closed a document (Command W) it asked me first if I want to save the changes I'd made to the document. I had the option of saving or not saving.
Sometimes I want to close a document without saving the changes, for example if I edit a text, then decide I prefer the unedited version.
But now that I'm using OS10.9.1, when I close a document, it automatically saves any changes I've made.
How can I get back to the original option of saving or not saving changes when I close a document? This option was available with the same version of Pages, when used with an earlier OS.
I've searched the Pages Users Guide, but can't find any answer, or default settings. Pages Preferences doesn't seem to address this.
I'm not using track changes, so I don't think that's the problem.
Any solutions would be greatly appreciated!

But I found the solution, for anyone else who is having the same problem....
Open your computer's System Preferences > General, and click the box "Ask to keep changes when closing documents."
Now, when you close a document in Pages, a window will open giving you the option of saving changes or not.
(I don't know whether this works in Pagesv.5., buty it works with v.4.3)

Firefox closes a document after opened. Hard to read news articles on some sites. Getting very tired of article closing one paragraph into it.

Firefox continues to close documents after opened on some sites. News articles opened will close after opened. Very upsetting to have to switch to another browser just to read an article. It also closes down Amazon.com after opened. It is not just one URL. Cache has been cleared, spy ware cleaned, and no viruses. Very frustrating.

Among the alternatives not mentioned... Using a TiVo DVR, rather than the X1; a Roamio Plus or Pro would solve both the concern over the quality of the DVR, as well as providing the MoCA bridge capability the poster so desperately wanted the X1 DVR to provide. (Although the TiVo's support only MoCA 1.1.) Just get a third-party MoCA adapter for the distant location. Why the hang-up on having a device provided by Comcast? This seems especially ironic given the opinions expressed regarding payments over time to Comcast. If a MoCA 2.0 bridge was the requirement, they don't exist outside providers. So couldn't the poster have simply requested a replacement XB3 from the local office and configured it down to only providing MoCA bridging -- and perhaps as a wireless access point? Comcast would bill him the monthly rate for the extra device, but such is the state of MoCA 2.0. Much of the OP sounds like frustration over devices providing capabilities the poster *thinks* they should have.

[dwm] can not close irssi window when opened in a xterm class

I know the subject title is not really meaningful but the problem is a bit odd.
When I start irssi in a opened xterm window I can easily close it via modkey-shift-c. To open it directly in a specific tag I created a new class for irssi and defined in config.h how to deal with that class.

When I then try to close the window with modkey-shift-c I just get the message "Irssi: Reloaded configuration".
I don't really know why this happens. I defnied also a seperate class for alsamixer and closing this is working without any problem.

What key do you have assigned as modkey in dwm?
It seems that modkey+shift+c is issuing the /RELOAD command in irssi rather than closing the window. The modkey is superceded by whatever appilcation is running in the terminal.
I run irssi in xterm and modkey+shift+c closes it without issue.

Can I use one document to open another?

I am assuming this is a scripting problem though I am not a scripter myself.
Basically the situation is this: I have a number of Appleworks documents each of which contains many thumbnails of images, and each thumbnail is also a hotlink to a url for the web page which hosts the full size image. I would be perfectly satisfied with this setup except that the Appleworks icon in Finder is total rubbish, worse even than a Classic icon. I cannot use the Finder (column view) to see from the icon which document it is.
To get around this, I have also saved the same documents in Photoshop as small jpegs, which give a beautiful, sharp, clear, LARGE icon image in Finder.
The problem is that I now have PAIRS of documents, one Appleworks and one Photoshop, a total of more than 50 pairs in a folder. What I want to do is to use the jpeg solely to identify the document in Finder, then when I double-click on it, the Appleworks document opens. Can I link document files together so that if I double-click one, the other opens?
I believe the clue may lie in aliases? I have created an alias of one of the jpegs, and its icon is every bit as good as the original document. Can I now get the alias to point to another document, in this case its paired Appleworks document?

Well, you may give this another try, though it's a little out of the scope of your original question. (Technically, custom icon and preview are two things ; ))
The following script will try to get preview image , i.e. pair of 'PICT' and 'pnot' resources, from Photoshop JPEG file and put it in the corresponding AppleWorks 6 file's resource.
If recent Photoshop JPEG file still stores the preview image in that fashion, this script should help. Otherwise, it would do nothing, hopefully. (Try the script on a test folder first.)
To run this script, you need to install Satimage.osax that is free scripting additions made and distributed by Satimage-software, France. See script's comment for more details.

Firefox opens a new window with sites I never visited and don't want, I can not close these tabs or open another tab from them.

I open a new window and two sites appear, One I had never heard of till now. Digg. I can't open a new tab from these tabs, there is never an x on the tab and close all other tabs does not get rid of them.

When opening a pdf file on my HP laptop, MS 8.1, i can only open or print one file. I can't close the file once opened or open anuything else unless i restart the laptop.

If you are not able to get Adobe Acrobat Reader to open .pdf files in the browser. Even after you check in prefs to show pdf files in the browser.
Make this modification for all versions of Adobe Acrobat Reader that show under this key.
-Note: Deleting the key and all subkeys for any older versions also seems to fix this problem. So if you see this key present,

How can I force a document to open on page one?

Using Acrobat pro 8.0 and Windows XP. I have a 2 page fill-in form that I have inherited that has no security. It always opens on page 2. I want it to open on page one. In preferences I’ve specified that it should open on the last page viewed. I’ve explored view/navigation panels and found nothing that will alter the opening sequence. Regardless of what I do it opens on page 2.

View the PDF's Document Properties under the Initial View tab. Perhaps the "Open to page" value has been set to page 2.

Can I set same documents to open when I restart Pages?

On a previous version, before a recent update, it used to be the case that when you opened Pages, it would open any documents you had open the last time you quit pages (if you quit Pages without closing those documents).
Now it doesn't do that, but I want it to. Is there a way to make Pages open all the documents you had open the last time you quit Pages?

You haven't said what version you are using. "Recent" doesn't really say.
It should reopen previously open documents, so it depends what you are using and what you have done.

How can I close a "child" window opened from a "main" window in html or JS without resorting to asking the user to close the "child" browser window? I think I have tried just about everything. I have tried opening the "child" window by an tag and with JS. I can get the "child" window to open but cannot seem to return to the unchanged "main" page. I know I must be doing something wrong.

There's no immediate need for a <form> element. You can use a pseudo button. Simply give the visitor something to click on.
BTW the browser "back" arrow is dimmed in the child window in IE, Firefox, and Safari.
When a webpage is opened in a new window there's nothing to go back to.

CS5 Mini Bridge Opens Images in Windows Paint

Can anyone tell me how to open images with Mini Bridge into Photoshop CS5? I have both an XP and a Windows 7 64-bit computer. I just downloaded the update to the CS5 program I had already installed and now when I go to open a JPEG image in Mini Bridge it opens the image in a program called Paint. When I use Bridge itself, with the settings set to "Automatically open all supported JPEGs" it opens my JPEG images in Camera Raw (which is fine). Do I have to reset the Preferences in order to clear everything out and start from scratch or is there another workaround that someone can tell me?

Yes, that is exactly what I did. Should I then always keep the prior version available in the computer or uninstall the earlier version before installing the upgrade version? I don't recall having this problem in earlier versions of LR or Photoshop.
I will go ahead and reinstall both CS5 and LR3 after deactivating. Darn I was hoping there would be a workaround, but I have no idea what the previous file associations would have been or how to change them in LR. I sure did learn a valuable lesson though.

Probably not, but as you will have been unable to make any changes to the document with that warning window open, you're not going to lose anything by quitting (or force quitting) without saving. You'll still have the original document you were trying to import.
I would suggest attempting to open the document in one of the open source Office applications, LibreOffice, Apache OpenOffice, or NeoOffice, each available for download from the linked sites. Once open there, remove the attributes that are causing the warning, save the file (as an MS Word document), then try opening that version in Pages.
