Can't connect from Mac to PC using MS Remote Desktop

I have a 5 day old Windows 8.1 laptop.
My daughter has an application called Microsoft Remote Desktop 8.0.5 on her Mac. It is Microsoft-made application for Mac, like Office.
I want her to access my computer, using this application, to access my computer from hers, even though she lives several states away (to show me how to use this computer).
Her application asks her for:
Connection Name
PC Name (Enter Host Name or IP Address)
Gateway (No Gateway Configured is the default), but she can add a Gateway, which then asks for a Gateway Name, Server, Username, and Password.
Username (Enter Domain\User)
Password
Resolution (Native is the Default)
Colors (32 bit is the Default)
Fullscreen Mode (OS X Native is the Default)
I found my IP addresses through the command prompt by typing ipconfig /all (Of course, nothing is actually called IP address.)
She types in the "Default Gateway" into the PC name box and she can't connect. She types in the "IPv4 address" and it can't connect. (She has tried uninstalling and re-installing the software).
The error message that she gets is "Unable to connect to remote PC. Please verify remote desktop is enabled, the remote pc is turned on and available on the network and try again."
As far as I know, I allowed Remote Access, and I set up the Windows Firewall to allow Remote Access. I have uninstalled Norton Internet Security because I could not access my settings with it installed at all, and installed AVG for free instead, which only
includes antivirus, no firewall.
What do we do? How can she access my computer to teach me how to use it?

Hi,
Firstly, you need to the following on your side.
1. Allow remote connections to the computer you want to access.
2. Make sure Remote Desktop is able to communicate through your firewall.
3. Find the IP address of the computer on your home network that you want to connect to.
4. Open your router's configuration screen and forward TCP port 3389 to the destination computer's IP address.
5. Find your router's public IP address so that Remote Desktop can find it on the Internet.
Allow Remote Desktop connections from outside your home network
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-HK/windows7/allow-remote-desktop-connections-from-outside-your-home-network
Then, for your daughter.
1. Connection Name: Optional.
2. PC Name: Required. Enter the public IP address of your router.
3. Gateway: No need here.
4. User Name:
YourComputerName\YourUserAccountName
5. Password: The password of
YourUserAccountName

However, please note that if your daughter connects to your computer, you will be disconnect and you cannot see what she is doing. It is be design.

  • Can't connect to windows 7 machine using microsoft remote desktop connection

I am unable to connect from my home network to the Windows 7 Professional machine at my office, using either Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection (2.1.1) for Mac or the open source CoRD program.
When connected to the office network (which is running MS Small Business Server 2011 Standard) both CoRD and MS RDC will connect to my desktop machine just fine! (My MacBook Pro runs Mountain Lion.)
From my home network, MS RDC will complain that it cannot find the Windows computer if I just use the Windows computer name. If I use the Windows machine's iPV4 address, it works on it for a minute and then tosses up this error message:
Using the IP address of the Windows machine, CoRD just grinds away for a minute or so and then times out.
I should add that using Internet Exporer under Parallels from home, I can get a little closer to success (after fidding around with ActiveX controls for a bit). I will get to the Windows login screen, but then I am told that my user password is wrong (which makes no sense at all)!
Okay, geniuses, have at it, and thanks in advance!!

  • Connect MacbookPro To HDTV to use as remote desktop

Just wondering if anyone could help me out,
I would like to connect my MacbookPro, Newest model bought in july, to my HDTV and was just wondering what is the cheapest way to do this?
I've seen a couple of places online telling you to buy 4 different leads and i thought it required less leads that this? I already have a HDMI cable, and just wondering the diffrent ways of doing this. \

  • Overriding function keys when using MS Remote Desktop Connection

Is there a way when connected to a RDP client using MS Remote Desktop Connection to prevent the function keys from being intercepted and handled by OSX. For example on my iMac keyboard, function keys 7 to 12 are used to control itunes and alter the system sound volumes. Is there a way to have these keys processed by the RDP client instead, so that the remote Windows OS can handle them?
While this question currently relates to an iMac, I'll soon be using a Macbook Pro in the same scenario, and will be requiring a similar solution for that machine.

Thanks for your suggestion. Setting that option only toggles what the function keys are interpreted as in OSX, but the key presses are still not processed by the OS in the RDP session. For example, pressing F9 when the RDP window is active shows all open OSX windows in Expose, rather than having the keypress processed by the active software in the RDP session
I did try posting to the forum you mentioned yesterday, but due to server issues my post failed. I'll try again today.

Install or Reinstall Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Can you print from an iPad 2 using 3G in a home with no computer or wifi by using an iPhone 5 hot spot connection if the printer has been set up in another place with live wifi? I know this question is loaded but my dad lives in a rural area

Can you print from an iPad 2 using 3G in a home with no other computer or wifi by using an iPhone 5 hot spot connection if the printer has been set up in another place with live wifi? I know this question is loaded but my dad lives in a rural area and is wanting a printer to use occasionally. He doesn't want to deal with a computer and I keep his iPad updated for him at my home.  Please shed some light on this for us PLEASE. Thanks

In that case, it should be possible. I haven't tried this directly, but I believe it should work.
You'll need to get an actual AirPrint compatible Printer.
Check here for a list of Printers you can choose from.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4356
Once you have the compatible printer, using the Hotspot feature from the iPhone he'll have to create the Wifi bubble form the iPhone, and connect the Printer to that Wifi network.
Then connect the iPad to that same Wifi network provided by the iPhone. When all that is done, the printer should appear in any of the Apps that can Print under the Action Arrow button.
For instance in email, pressing the action arrow should show a Print option. In there the printer should appear.
Alternatively you can simply buy a wireless router and setup the network through there even if there is no internet attached.  Connect the wireless printer to the router network, and connect the iPad or iPhone to that same wifi network to print.

  • Can I connect my Mac (Mac OS X) with other machine (Windows OS) on same LAN using telnet in terminal? For example, telnet ip address of other machine

Can I connect my Mac (Mac OS X) with other machine (Windows OS) on same LAN using telnet in terminal?
For example, telnet <ip address of other machine>
I m a networking student and I have learned to connect 2 machines on Red hat Linux OS on same Ethernet LAN which has same subnet mask. As Mac OS X is also a linux based OS I m trying to connect my Mac with my friends windows based machine using telnet <ip address of his machine>. However, I get a message "unable to connect to remote host".
Can anyone please tell me is this the problem because of different OS or it is something different!
Please reply...it will of great help..

The machine you're trying to connect to needs a Telnet server running on it - telnetd listening on port 23 (usually).
Incidentally, Mac OS X is not a Linux based OS, it is based on BSD Unix.

  • How can I connect my Mac Book Pro (year 2008) to the TV set through  HDMI? I've seen a DVI to HDMI iwire but I'm no sure that it is correct. Could anyone help me? Thank you very much.

How can I connect my Mac Book Pro (year 2008) to the TV set through  HDMI? I've seen a DVI to HDMI iwire but I'm no sure that it is correct. Could anyone help me? Thank you very much.

I do not know the iWire adapter, but I use an inexpensive ($3) DVI to HDMI adapter from Monoprice, along with a regular HDMI cable:
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10419&cs_id=1041902 &p_id=2029&seq=1&format=2
Be aware that this will only transfer video. You Macbook Pro cannot combine audio through DVI to HDMI. You will need to listen to the audio through the Mac speakers, or attach speakers or a sound system to the Mac earphone jack, or determine if your TV has the ability to accept external sound from the Mac while showing video through HDMI (few can).

  • Can't connect from mavericks (MBP) to mountain lion (MacPro) via Wifi

i am trying to google for answers to this and i just come up with answers about connections to printers or hdmi or TV's etcetera.
the problem is that i can connect to my laptop (macbook pro) from my desktop (mac pro) but i can't connect from my laptop (MBP) to my desktop (mac pro). i used to be able to do this but for some reason all i see if "Share Screen" or "Disconnect" and my iCloud Account is listed as "Connected As" but there is no data shown in Finder.
does anyone know what search terms i can google for or if there is a Settings section that i should be checking?
i tried dragging the Mac Pro icon out of the Shared section and i tried hitting disconnect as well as restarting both machines and turning off wifi on the laptop (hmmm. maybe i will shut both down at the same time...?) and so far no solutions.
right now i have to go to the desktop to move files around and this is a major pain.
i can see the network and i can print...
    THANKS for any help

hi. thank you. this is really aggravating. i am checking the mac pro this morning (it is the one i cannot access from my laptop) and attached is the screenshot. does this look OK?
also, i am starting to wonder is it possible that the "Computer Name" has changed itself on the network or is it possible that i have some control over /naming/ the computer? it seems to often be named "MyName Mac Pro (2)" which always bothers me since there is no 1 Mac Pro and i would like to get rid of the appended 2.
but ALSO i don't recall ever having changed anything in system preferences so i am wondering if somehow the computer renamed itself or something weird has happened.
finally, is it possible something is amiss with the fact that FINDER says it is connected via my icloud EMAIL account at the top of the Finder window on my Laptop whereas when i check just now on the desktop it shows that i am connnected as the SHORT NAME of my LAPTOP. i mean, when i connec tto the laptop from the desktop it shows me connected as the short name of the laptop but when i connect to the desktop as the laptop - it says i am connnected as the name of my ICLOUD ACCOUNT and i am thinking it should say i am connected as the name of my MAC PRO SHORT NAME.
you know what i mean? is there a place in the LAPTOP to check where i input what name and password i am connecting to the Mac Pro under...
    THANK YOU

  • If I buy a Telstra Pre-Paid Wi-Fi 4G can I connect my Mac PC to it?

If I buy a Telstra Pre-Paid Wi-Fi 4G can I connect my Mac PC to it?

If your machine came with Lion preinstalled, you cannot use it on another machine. It is tied to the machine it came with. You are allowed to make a one time transfer of the OS when you sell the machine as long as it remains with that machine.
If you purchase Lion from the app store, you are free to install it on as many Macs as you own - however, if/when you sell one of those Macs, you are required to uninstall Lion as the license is not transferable and you need to reinstall the original OS.
You can read the SLA for yourself - the link to the downloads to all licenses is here:

  • Can only connect from one direction

I'm having trouble video confrencing... I tried searching the forums, but I'm having trouble thinking of clever search terms.
I can only connect from one direction with one person. They can invite me to a chat and it works fine every time. However when I invite them it always fails. I can invite other people and it works fine though.
This doesn't seem like a typical router problem, because they can invite me and we videochat just fine.
This has been a problem for most versions of iChat that I can remember, but I'm using 3.1.5 currently.
