Can't Connect To The Internet Or Router

I have had my router set up for about three years.  It's always worked perfectly fine until the other day. I think that the router just died, but I'm not sure and I want to try and fix this one before I just go out and buy a new one.
Basic Background Information:
Model No:WRT54GC
-The router is and always has been hooked up to a surge protector and there haven't been any other recent surges in my home.
-When the wireless router is connected to the computer (using a functioning Ethernet cable ) I cannot connect to the internet or the router.  (I can't even put the IP into a browser and bring it up.  I also tried the factory setting IP, just incase it actually did reset, and that doesn't work either.)
-When the router is plugged in I can't see it from any other wireless computer.  (I also checked for any new signals and did not see any after I reset the router.)
-LEDs look like:
      *Power = solid green
      *Internet = solid green
*wireless = hard to tell - doesn't look like it's on at all
*all other Ethernet pluggins = solid green
What I've Tried So Far:
-I couldn't connect to the internet so I plugged the modem directly into my computer.  -->  The internet works.
-I tried unplugging the router, waiting, and then plugging it back in.  -->  I couldn't connect to the internet or the router.
-I tried the reset button.  -->  I couldn't connect to the internet or the router.
-I tried leaving the router unplugged all night and then plugging it in and starting the process all over again.  -->  I couldn't connect to the internet or the router.
-I also tried downloading new firmware, but since I can't connect to the router through any of my browsers I am unsure how else to update the firmware.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Try upgrading your Router's firmware and then you can reconfigure your Router from the scratch...
As you are not able to go online through router...you have to download the formware by connecting computer to the modem..
Go to website linksysbycisco.com/downloads.........insert model no of your router in serach tab......select proper version of your router........download the firmware file......save that file on desktop
Now reconnect the Modem to Router on Internet Port and from Computer to Router on Ethernet Port 1and now Press and hold the reset button for 60 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...
Now you can upgrade the firmware using TFTP utility...Download tftp utility.
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Double click the TFTP.exe file and click run.
For Server- Enter the IP Address of the router that you assigned.  By default, the router is 192.168.1.1...
For Password- Enter the password you assigned the router. By default, the router’s password is “admin”.
For File- Click the triple “…” button and browse for the .bin firmware file...
Click Upgrade button to start upgrading.  A progress bar should show up to show the progress.
Once the Upgrade is done press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • Can't connect to the internet through router

I have an HP Pavillian DV6 laptop, DSL connection through ATT, a Linksys wireless N router.  It had been working fine for abourt 7 months, Then all of a sudden I lost my network connection.  I clicked in the right hand corner to connect to the network & it was gone.  I have tried to re-run the software for the router & I get to where it wants to connect to the internet & it won't.  I have tried to log into the router to run the setup on the internet explorer page using 192.168.1.1 I now can find my network, I click connect, it says it is connected, but no internet.  I can connect to the internet if I plug the modem directly into my laptop, but once I connect from the modem to the router, it will not connect to the internet. I have been searching HP, CIsco, & even my maker of my wirelkess card to see if there were any driver updates.  My wireless card says it is up to date.  I tried to rest my BIOS, that didn't help either.  I'm stumped, & I've spent entirely too much time trying to figure this out with no success, PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Reset your router to defaults. Here's the procedure.
Reconfigure the router so it would connect to the internet. Here's the procedure.
Reconfigure your wireless settings. Here's the procedure. I suggest you set your SSID to something unique. In addition, set your wireless security to WPA or WPA2. Don't use WEP as it is insecure.

  • Can't connect to the internet via router(WRT54G)

Hi, I've just installed my WRT54G wireless router even though I'm connected to the internet and all the right lights are flashing. I still don't get any internet connection through the router. I've tried all kind of methods but still nothing. Please help me.

if you have cable isp, log on to the router's admin <192.168.1.1> via internet explorer.. doesn't need the router to be online on the web to access it..
once inside, select mac address clone on the blue strips and choose enable and click clone my pc's mac bar..(make sure you use the main pc that was first online thru the modem/cable box)..then save settings..
then go to status on the black strip and check if you have an ip address and dns 1 to 2/3.. if you do.. then congrats.. you have successfully configured the router..
if you have dsl, and has username and pw from isp, log on to router admin same way and select on the first box w/ the drop down arrow pppoe, type in un & pw and save settings..gp to status and make sure pppoe says connected w/ ip addresses as well..
if no un & pw, connect only pc and router, access router admin same way, change lan ip to a diff. segment <192.168.2.1>save settings..unplug the router's power cable only for 10-20sec and plug in internet cable from dsl box and power as well.. to make sure, log on to new ip of router (e.g 192.168.2.1), clone pc's mac as well..then go to status and check if you have ip addresses..
NOTE: if non of them gave you ip addresses, click dhcp renew / refresh button on status screen for cable and dsl w/o un & pw..
if pppoe connection, try powering down router & modem at same time for 2min. then power them back on.. it should work by then..
whew!!! that was long.. nwei, it worked for me and my neighbor, i have cable, she has dsl..good luck!!!

  • Linksys Wireless Router BEFW11S4 - Shows connected, but I can not connect to the internet

I have a Linksys Router hooked up to a cable RCA modem using Comcast Cable. There are 3 laptops that hook up wirelessly to the router and they have been working fine for the past two years. However, recently all three laptops can not connect to the internet for some reason. I checked with Comcast and they checked out the modem and tested it and it works fine. When I hook my laptop up to the modem with an ethernet cable, it works fine and I can get  on the internet. When I hook the modem up to the router and try to connect wirelessly it appears to be fine. It shows that the router is connected there is connectivity on all our laptops, however when I open a new internet explorer page to get on the internet, it does nothing. A blank page appears and the webpage will not load. Does anyone know how to fix this? Is it the router or the way it is setup in the admin page or could it be possibly something else? Thanks.

As it shows connected under wireless ....check the Ip address under wireless network connection .....
If it shows Ip 192.168.1.X ....with gateway 192.168.1.1 ..... try to pnig the gateway address ...
If getting reply try going online ....
    Also disable the firewall first.....

  • After update I can't connect to the internet in no way, shape or form

I rarely update because: 1) something always breaks when you update (like now) and 2) I don't like to deal with new crap like GNOME 3. Anyway:
I bought a new router (TL-WR1043N) and configured it with an old Ubuntu because connecting to 192.168.1.1 didn't work on any of my Arch Linux installations. Now... here's where it all starts... I can't use the 'n' wireless on my laptop since I have to install something to use WPA, and to install that I need to update, but I don't want to deal with GNOME 3 and Firefox >3. But I gave up eventually gave up and connected my laptop to the router by Ethernet cable. Setting that up was very easy: 'ifconfig eth0 up; dhcpcd'. Voila! I updated my whole system and restarted. To see how badly I damaged my system I opened Nautilus (I use Openbox with some GNOME programs): shock and dismay, the fonts are visible from the moon. I guess I'll have to quit using GNOME programs completely now but I expected that. I used to use KDE back in the day and when KDE4 came forth from that unholy pit, I immediately abandoned it for GNOME. This time we had more time to prepare, everybody knew what GNOME 3 was going to be. I started using Openbox quite a long time ago.
Anyway: Now to fix my wireless right? WRONG! I can't connect to the internet on cable to get the packages for wireless. I installed Windows 7 64 on the same laptop and it connects to the cable. Ubuntu 9.10 Live also connects, but due to the changes of rc.conf and network stuff I can't connect at all with Arch Linux.
So I decided to abandon it completely and reinstall from scratch. But the Live CD also doesn't work. With all the ways I've tried it all comes down to this:
dhcpcd always times out waiting for a carrier and 'ip addr' shows 'eth0: <NO-CARRIER, ....' if the interface is up. I'm not sure what information I should give you, but I can't paste any here since I can't connect to the damn internet on that laptop.
About the router: the cable is plugged on port 1 and the LED for it flashes if I reboot the computer. In Windows it stops flashing while it connects and flashes again when connected. I removed 'network' from DAEMONS and it flashes till I start it with '/etc/rc.d/network start'. This hangs for a while and returns '[DONE]' even though it doesn't work and the LED never flashes again on the router.
In rc.conf I have exactly what the example says for DHCP. In any case, it doesn't work with the Live CD either.
EDIT 1: From lscpi: painstakingly typed:
06:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN [Kedron] Network Connection (rev 61)
07:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconducctor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 01)
EDIT 2: Just to be clear: I can use the wireless on the laptop on the Live CD, but I want to use the cable because of the greater speed (94Mbit/s on cable 60 something on wireless n, 20 something on g) and because I rarely move the laptop.
EDIT 3: lspci -v shows "Kernel driver in use: r8169   /   Kernel modules: r8169", so the driver is loaded.
EDIT 4: So if I boot from the CD. ip addr shows:
eth: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 qdisc noop state DOWN qlen 1000
        link/ether 00:1d:92:...etc... brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
And  the LED flashes. When I type: "ifconfig eth0 up" it stops, never to light up again and ip addr shows: "eth: <nO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state DOWN qlen 1000

When you're in Arch, use output redirection
    lspci >lspci.out
then boot into Ubuntu or something where you can access the files and the BBS,  Of course, don't forget to use a new file for each command output.
The new network config in rc.conf is not that complicated (wired anyway; never used wireless).  OTOH I've had issues on two machines where I have to restart the network daemon (rc.d restart network) or rerun netcfg (netcfg eth0) after boot to get connectivity. And I still haven't come to grips with the ip command.

  • Safari 5.1.1 can't connect to the internet.  Every other browser can.

I've tried resetting Safari, reinstalling Safari, and resetting my router to factory settings.  Safari still can't connect to the internet, but everything else on my Mac (Snow Leopard 10.6.8) can.
I recently tried setting up Open DNS just because I've had problems with Comcast lately.  But I've since returned DNS to be detected automatically.
    Thoughts?

  • Can't connect to the internet

Ok. so i did a search and didn't come across any other problems like the one I'm having.
Let me start off by stating that my laptop is an ibook g4 bought feb, '06 (yes the apple care just ran out).
I'm having a problem connecting to the internet on my ibook, running through a d-link wireless router. I'm using my imac to connect to the internet currently (which works fine by the way). It also is connected through the wireless router.
My ibook has a strange ailment. I open up Safari and all I get is a blank screen, the page is trying to load but the status bar is going no where and does the same in Firefox. So first, I opened Network diagnostics, but the computer freezes and I have to do a hard shutdown. (holding the power button). Next, I tried Disk utility. Verified Permissions, Repaired Permissions, everything is fine. I tried to Verify Disk, and again the computer freezes, will not let me force quit and I am forced to do another hard shutdown. I do the thing where you hold down some key while you're starting up to get into the disk utility so I can repair the disk. This returns clean as well. I downloaded techtool off of my Applecare disk. Did the tests, everything passes. So what's the deal?? I've tried to reset the pram. I even did the Apple Hardware test, everything passed.
I thought it could be my Airport card? It recognizes that there is an internet connection in the top right corner, I even have great signal strength (mostly because I've tried this sitting right next to the router). But still, I can't connect to the internet. Any one have any ideas? I don't know what else to try! Please help!

so i can't believe i didn't try to connect it directly to the router with the ethernet cord. This actually worked. But it still didn't solve my wireless problem. I'm not willing to let my laptop become a desktop. I'm already wired to a plug b/c the battery is slowly dying and has a life of about 5 minutes. I'm not willing to give up my wireless internet too.
I guess now it's got to be the airport card? how do I confirm this? and if it is how much would a new one cost and can I install it myself??

  • Can connect to my house network, but can't connect to the Internet (other computers can)

    Hello,
I'm experiencing a strange problem. Since I started my Mac Pro (cold start) some hours ago, I've lost the hability to connect to the Internet (Safari and Mail say I'm not connected). However, I can connect to 192.168.2.1 (my router) and see its webpage (it says it's connected to the Internet). If I use another computer on the same network, it can also connect to the Internet.
Weirder, if I go back to my Mac Pro with "no internet" and launch Parallels Desktop, then I can use WinXP to browse the Internet; I'm writing this post on my WinXP virtual machine.
This leads me to think there's a problem with how my Mac OS handles the networking. I have checked the Console, but the only related string I found is this:
    16.04.13 22:03:25
    kernel
    SIOCPROTOATTACH_IN6: en2 error=17
As expected, Google doesn't reveal anything about that (and I'm connected with the first ethernet port). I've tried to restart my Mac, but the problem persists (exact same symptoms).
Could it be a DNS cache issue?
I don't see, other than a DNS problem, why I can't connect to the Internet with my Mac OS while I can on my virtual machines. If it was a driver problem, I wouldn't be able to connect to my router. If it's a DNS issue, where are the DNS caches located in order to clear them (I'd trash the folder)?
I could also reinstall the OS (waste of time, btw), but I'd really like to understand the problem, not just clear it and forget about it.
Or better than guesses, anyone already experienced this?
    Any help welcome.

If it's a DNS issue, where are the DNS caches located in order to clear them (I'd trash the folder)
No DNS caches, it looks up the alphabetic and then uses the numberic from then on.
    http://17.149.160.49
is Apple, Inc main US web site. It that works, and the alphabetic does not, you have a DNS probelm.

  • Can't connect to the internet in my home yet other devices can. I tried it in other Wifi places and it connects without a problem. My home Wifi is with Att uverse

Can't connect to the internet in my home yet other devices can. I tried it in other wifi places and it connects without a problem. My home wifi is with ATT Uverse. I cheched the IP address on my laptop and its different than on my Ipod although it on the same network.

Move off WEP to WPA or, preferably, to WPA2 (as recommended by Apple). WEP has been deprecated by the WiFi Alliance since 2004 as insecure (it can be cracked in seconds by any hacker).
Note that each device on a network has a unique IP address but if your address starts with 169 then you did not get a valid IP address assigned to you by your router. If restarting the router did not cure the problem then you should check for a firmware update for your router.

  • I put the BT WiFi app on my iPad Mini and now I can't connect to the internet.  Please help

I put the Bt WiFi app on my iPad Mini  and now I can't connect to the internet.  Please Help

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

IP routing doesn't work the way many folks might initially think it does; functional IP routing requires manual configuration and the establishment of static routes and default routes specific to the local network configurations, and it's very easy to get it wrong, or to get the default route swapped. Multiple NIC boxes don't magically work, either. (Been there, done that, wondered what happened to my network when the paths got reordered or my route settings were messed up, etc.)
Routing configuration errors can be quite subtle, too. (Again, voice of experience. Ever had a thousand-seat office LAN accidentally routing through your desktop? As the, um, unnamed guilty party discovered, getting into that configuration was subtle. Seeing the performance crater on the fellow's box and on the LAN was obvious.)
Knowing how IP routing works is a prerequisite to getting this configuration to work; there's manual configuration required. Clearly something has gone weird here.
What to do? Read up on IP routing. I'll again suggest the threads and the manual mentioned earlier.
And in general, I prefer to avoid using my comparatively expensive Mac boxes as sub-optimal IP routers or as firewall boxes. General-purpose operating systems and generic x86 boxes are going to be inherently poor IP routers. Dedicated routers (or embedded or surplus x86 boxes with routing software loaded) offload the Mac boxes here, and are also typically easier to configure manage. And "real" IP routers can have hardware specific to efficiently routing packets. Use of an outboard firewall or firewall-router box also greatly simplifies gateway routing, too; it's a configuration that many folks and many businesses tend to use.

  • I can not connect to the internet while using my ipad I get a message saying Safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding need help thank you

I CAN NOT CONNECT TO THE INTERNET WHILE USING MY IPAD I KEEP GETTING A MESSAGE SAYING SAFARI COULD NOT OPEN THE PAGE BECAUSE THE SERVER STOPPED RESPONDING PLEASE HELP THANK YOU

    Try the following:
    1. Turn router off for 30 seconds and on again
    2. Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    3. Reset iPad; hold the Sleep and Home button down until you see the Apple Logo

  • Why is my wi-fi signal is going strong, but I can't connect to the internet?

    Before I begin, here's my set-up:
My wi-fi signal (on the top right side of my MacBook) is going strong (with all the bars). And a green light is lit up on my Airport Extreme. For some reason, I still can't connect to the internet/use Apple Mail/use iChat. I don't think that there's anything wrong with my MacBook, as my wife isn't able to connect to the internet with her iPad or with her laptop either.
I'm thinking that I have the strong wi-fi signal showing up on my computer because it actually is connecting to the Airport Extreme, yet the airport extreme somehow isn't connected to or isn't able to connect to the router. Would this be correct? Any ideas of how I might fix this? I tried unplugging and replugging everything for a few seconds. However, whenever I use a hardwire ethernet connection to my MacBook, my internet and everything works.
ALSO, of note, I just purchased an Apple Time Capsule. I just realized that it functions as a wi-fi base. Any chance that my computer, my wife's iPad and laptop are just connecting to the Time Capsule instead of the Airport Extreme?
Any answers would be more than appreciated. Thanks!

    Deselect Proxies if selected.
    Safari > Preferences > Advanced > Proxies:
    Click "Change  Settings" button
The network preferences window for Proxies will will show up with "Proxies"
    tab selected.
Under "Select Protocol", uncheck any box if selected.
    Click "OK", then  "Apply"

  • New MBPro...airport connection established but can not connect to the internet...help! suggestions?

Hi all, trying to set up my MBPro...seems to be connecting to my AirPort Base Station w/out any troubles...but when I try to get online I'm getting a "can't connect to the Internet" message. I checked my network settings, restarted multiple times, etc. No luck. Seems to be a problem with the IP address (I think)...but not sure how to resolve it. I have an iMac and iPhone in the house that are able to connect and get online w/out issues. Any thoughts? TY!!

Are you asking the make/model of the computer or the AX base station?
Neither, I was interested in the make/model of the cable modem.
Our ethernet connection was fried in an electrical storm so we had to go wireless.
Electrical storms are never a good thing when it comes to electronics. What was/is your current network configuration? Is it something like the following?
Cable modem > (Ethernet cable) > AX > (wireless) > wireless devices
Is there another router, other than the AX, in the configuration? ... or an Ethernet switch? I'm just trying to understand your network to best advise you on how to configure the AX.
