Can't copy files to time capsule

I need some help with my new 2TB Time Capsule.  I setup the time capsule and did my first time machine backup.  Now I want to copy over additional files to time capsule from my full hard drive on my iMac. When I drag files over the following message occurs "The item “FILE NAME” can’t be moved because “Time Capsule” can’t be modified."
I went into my aiport utilities -- opened up my time capsule -- went to disks -- clicked file sharing -- and the enabled file sharing box is checked.
Help! How do I move files to my time capsule.
Thanks in advance

From post above: "Now I want to copy over additional files to time capsule from my full hard drive on my iMac"
I'm sorry for the confusion.  My device is called "Time Capsule" --- How do I remedy the error I am receiving?
"The item “FILE NAME” can’t be moved because “Time Capsule” can’t be modified."
This error occurs when I am drag a document from my iMac hard drive to my time capsule (which technically has another name).

  • Can't access files in Time Capsule in WIN7 64 Bit- says folder is empty

Hi there. I can't seem to access my files in Time Capsule using WIN7 64 BIT, it works fine as a router , i can see the time capsule online and how much space it's occupied, however whenever i click on it , it says folder it empty. I can access the files from OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard).
I tried to drag and drop new files into the Time Capsule in WIN7 , it copies/paste the files fine for a second and then disappear, and if i go back to the Snow Leopard i can see those folders again , so i am guessing i need enable some kind access/ file sharing option or whatever that allows the files to be visible. Has anyone faced this situation in WIN7 64 BIT ?
    Thanks

  • HELP! Cannot copy files off Time Capsule

I have a 1TB Time Capsule (DualBand) that I use like a NAS (network attached storage). Time Machine is disabled, but I manually copy files on the Time Capsule's disk when I want to back them up, and share them with other computers in my house.
I am trying to copy all of the files of the Time Capsule to a 2 TB Firewire 800 drive connected to my MacBook Pro, but I'm having a problem. About half-way through the the copy process (which is estimated to be an over-night ordeal) the Time Capsule is disconnected and I get the error:
+The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data+
+in "" could not be read or written.+
    +(Error code -36)+
Also, the disconnected Time Capsule is still visible in the SHARED portion of my Finder's sidebar, but it is impossible to connect to the disk again, unless I unplug the Time Capsule and power it back up.
Every time I try the process, I receive the same error, and have to restart my Time Capsule again. Could someone please help me get my data off my Time Capsule? I would prefer not to have to resort to ripping it open, so I can put the drive into my USB Toaster.
NOTE: I've tried repairing disk permissions on my MBP and repairing disk on my 2TB external drive. I've found no way to do any of these kinds of things on the Time Capsule's internal disk.

I don't have a direct solution to your disconnection problem, but if your 2 TB drive has a USB port, you may be able to connect it to your Time Capsule and use the "Archive" function (in AirPort Utility's Disks/Disks panel) to copy that data from the Time Capsule disk.

  • Can Not Unlock Files on Time Capsule

When replacing an external disk drive, I copied over 180 G of mp3 files from an external drive to my Time Capsule into a data folder (not backed up with time machine). After coping them to a new external drive I attempted to delete the files on the Time Capsule only to discover they are all Locked and can not be deleted. When I try to change unlock under "get info" as an admin, it will not unlock. I've read I can sudo chflags for a single file, but I have over 45,000 files. What is the better way?

+Can I reset the drive and erase everything? I can't see the TC in Disk Utility.+
Are you saying you want to erase the drive on the TC? You don't do that with Disk Utility, you use AirPort Utility.
    Airport Utility - Manual Setup
Click the Disks icon in the row of icons
Click the Disks tab below the icons
    Click Erase
The Quick Erase will only take few minutes. Zero Out will take several hours or more depending on how much data you have on the drive.
And, it goes without saying that you should check to make sure that you don't need the files on the TC as everything will be erased.
Post back if you need to reset the TC back to factory defaults. This won't erase the drive, but it will clear any configuration settings and set them back to defaults.

  • Trouble accessing files from/copying files to Time Capsule

I'm having two issues which I haven't seen on the forums.
    1. When I try to open a file stored on the TC, I get an error message: "Connection failed...There was an error connecting to the server...etc...," however, as soon as I close that warning box, the file opens. So at least I can get the files open, but I get that annoying message every time I go to open a file.
    2. When I try to copy a large file to the TC, the file will look like it's completely copied over, but it actually is only partially copying and is unopenable.
I did not notice these issues before installing Snow Leopard, so I'm guessing it's related, but thought I'd try here. Thanks for any ideas...

To start with moving the Time Machine backup as you have requested is not a case of simple copy and paste.. TM does not backup on network drives in the same way as it does on local drives. You can much more easily move the Network backup to the local drive than visa versa as you are wanting to do.. IMHO don't bother.. keep the 1TB drive for a few months until you build up a complete backup history on the TC.. from that point you are unlikely to need earlier backups and you can wipe them.
If you wish to try the details are here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
    See Q18.
Apparently this does not even work anymore with Mavericks and especially Yosemite.. so do not be surprised if after spending a day or two copying the TM backup to the TC it then refuses to connect.. and you have to scrub it and start a new clean backup anyway.
Can I have the Time Capsule be wireless for my internet connection AND mount the internal drive via ethernet to do the file transfer?
You can do this and we recommend it for first backup to the TC.. which is very large and should be the best as this first backup is then the basis for every increment thereafter.. TM never completely wipes this first backup.
It is easy.. plug the computer into the TC by ethernet.. and turn off the wireless.. then do the backup.. once completed.. disconnect the ethernet and turn the wireless back on.

  • Having trouble copying files to time capsule.

Hello all. Apologies if this isn't in the correct forum. I didn't see one for the time capsule. And thanks in advance for any help.
I recently purchased a new macbook pro after my old macbook pro had a lot of issues. (It had a good run, but was probably 3-4 years old.)
I was trying to copy some files from the old computer to the new computer using my time capsule as an external hard drive. I don't have a firewire cord, and the migration assistant program seemed to take far too long. So I'd hoped to just copy the files onto the time capsule, then copy them onto my new computer.
However, I've encountered several problems. A message will pop up, error -36, and state that some files cannot be copied. Rather than not copy those and copy the rest of the files, the whole process stops. I cannot go through and pick out the individual files, because I can't tell what's causing the problem until the error actually occurs.
Any advice on how to get around this? Or am I missing an easier way to transfer data (such as an itunes library)?
    Thanks.

For future reference, it's hiding in the +Digital Life > Airport and Time Capsule+ section.

Were you connected to the old Mac via Ethernet? That's slow, but doable.

    Yes, that's why Apple invented +Setup Assistant+ and +Migration Assistant.+

Your best bet will be to get a firewire cable and start over. Anything else will be tedious, likely have permissions problems, and be easy to miss things.
Since you've already got who knows what copied, your best option is probably to set up a temporary Admin account, log on with it and delete the one(s) you created. Be sure to delete the home folder(s), too, when prompted.
Then connect the Macs via FireWire and run +Migration Assistant.+ See: [Using Migration Assistant|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Migrate.html]

  • Can't delete files on Time Capsule

I manually created a folder on my Time Capsule called "manual backups" and dragged some folders/files there. (They were dragged over from an external drive, which had files I put on there from my mac. Not using a pc.) A few weeks later I went to delete the folder and I get "The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items." I am logged in as myself, the admin. How can I delete these files?

Select the files and fix their permissions.. so you have the ability to delete them..
If you do happen to have a pc on the network.. try deletion from Windows Explorer as sometimes it is a lot easier as windows tends to ignore file permissions.
What OS is actually on the computer??
There are a couple of sneaky methods.. like create a folder of the same name as the folder you are trying to delete.. it seems to be able to create an empty folder over a live one.
No luck with anything then you will need to do it from terminal .. but I think you should tell us exactly what OS you are running first.

  • Can't drag files to Time Capsule

I just set up my Time Capsule.  It is connected wirelessly to my iMac. I am trying to drag files from my iMac to the time capsule. I get the message, "Modifying ' name of time capsule' requires an administrator name and password. To move 'file name', click Authenticate".  But there is no authenticate button.  What should I do to enable dragging files to the TC?

Are you transferring files WD plugged in by USB to the TC?
If so the process is WD--USB--TC--network--Computer--network--TC--InternalTCdrive.
If you are using wireless it is much much worse.. Because every packet is copied to the computer then back again.
If you have the USB drive plugged into the computer.. (this is far superior).
    WD--USB--Computer--network--TC--internaldisk.
But the TC must be connected by ethernet to the main router.. if you have it connected by wireless then it is much worse again.
Ethernet and all ethernet with wireless turned right off is the only way.. and the USB drive plugged directly in to the computer.

  • Can't find files on Time Capsule

    Early 2008 2.4 GHz iMac running 10.7.5
Time Capsule with 699 GB available (connected via Ethernet cable)
When I bought my Time Capsule I added all of my pre-Time Machine backups to it in a separate folder. This worked fine for several years. Time Machine backed everything up and if I need an older file I went into the folder I made of previous backups. Now, when I access Time Capsule I only see the Time Machine backups. The folder of previous backups isn't there. There's still tons of space on it so I can't imagine anything was overwritten. Also, the Time Capusle never shows up like other external hard drives or devices - only as a shared device. Not sure if that has something to do with it. I can't tell when this started. It's been a while so there were a couple of OS updates in there. At this point, I just want to get my really old files off of it and move them to another hard drive. Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Can's access files from time capsule

I have a 2TB Time Capsule that is about 2 months old.  The wifi works however, when I go to access the files on the drive, the time capsule boots itself off of the network.  I use the time capsule to store my musics, movies, and pictures on.  Only a couple of gigs of space is being used.  I've done a soft reboot on the time capsule and on the ATT uverse box that it is bridged through.  Problem still persist.  Issue is happening on my macbook pro and windows laptop.  Machines can see the drive, back either the files or empty or time capsule goes off line.  Any thoughts.

Yes, unless it's been deleted from the Time Capsule, which may happen when it runs out of space. Don't use the backup as a storage place for files you intentionally delete from the computer; it's designed for recovery of accidentally deleted content, and if desired, for use with the Migration Assistant when setting up a new Mac.

  • Can't migrate files from time capsule, resource temporarily unavailable

My old iMac 20" Intel late 2006 crashed. It got slower and froze as well as lines across, so I thought it's the graphic card. At the same time the SOPHOS Anti virous detected malware and trojan on my computer which was removed manually.
Unfortunately with the 20" late 2006 model the card cannot be replaced. Ran hardware test and did not indicate any hardware issues. Finally could not boot from the disc. When I turned on the machine, I could hear fans running and some other noice but only black screen. We back up our computers every hour onto a time capsule.
I purchased a new iMac 21.5 " and thought it will be easy to migrate everything from the time capsule. I done it in the past when I had to replace the hard drive on the old iMac 2 years ago.
Unfortunately when I try to access the time capsule, I received the message of data damaged and now resource temporarily unavailable. How can I retrieve my data? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

You will be in deep trouble if the TM backup is corrupt..
Run the verify disk on the sparsebundle.. Pondini has some instructions here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
    Look at A5
Also there are manual methods of getting as much as possible from the backup if it is not corrupted too badly..
    Look at http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
He gives several methods to restore files.. read Q14-17.

  • Can I Retrieve Files From Time Capsule?

I had a MacBook Pro that was fully backed up to a Time Capsule. The laptop was stolen last week. I have some files (photos I wanted to use for holiday cards) I wanted to retrieve while I save up some money to buy a new MacBook. I have two powerbooks and was wondering if it is possible to connect them to Time Capsule to access those other files. They are 10.4 and don't have Time Machine. I suppose I could connect computer to Time Capsule using a USB cable and it would act like any other external hard drive?

Ok. I just upgraded one of the powerbooks to Leopard. But still no luck accessing individual files... Migration assistant will transfer accounts. All I'm looking to do right now is transfer a few documents, photos, etc. Help!

  • Can I copy files from Time Machine to another Mac (or flash drive, etc)?

I hosed my hard drive yesterday (dropped the MBP on a hard floor).  Fortunately, I have a TM backup that was done only an hour or so before the accident.  It will take me a couple of days to get a new HD and install it, so I'm wondering if it will mess up the TM backup if I copy some of the files onto another system so I can continue stuff I need to do until I can restore the system.
I do *not* intend to do any work, change files, etc on the backup drive, just want to work on them on another system, then copy back *after* the MBP is restored and functional.
    Thanks,
    Chuck

That is very useful info!  Thanks.  I have a new drive in and the TM restore went fine, so I'm in business again.
So you are saying that this method will not damage TM access to the backup file, as for example in needing to do a complete restore?
    Thanks again,
    Chuck
