Can't create artricles properly, no thumbnails

I just taught a DPS class yesterday and 12 different computers were having problems creating folios properly. First, we were having problems adding both horizontal and vertical layouts using the "Add open Indesign documents" feature. If we added the horizontal we couldn't add the vertical. if we added the vertical we couldn't add the horizontal. So, then when we tried "importing" layouts instead, we got both layouts but NO thumbnails! This happened on 12 different computers. I've taught this class 10 times in the last 3 months with no major issues. We tried making offline folios and online folios and the same thing happened. Any suggestions?

having created a number of single orientation articles and added these to a folio today, I now find I cannot even login through the folio builder panel inside Indesign or see to update its articles inside the folio builder as it is now causing an error on my iPad also the folio is no longer available to view or even update within the folio builder panel.
Any thoughts what's happening.

You can create a mailing list by using the "Groups" feature of Address Book. Simply select "New Group" from the File menu. Name the group, and drag the contacts you need into the group.
In Mail, open up Preferences (under the Mail menu), and click on "Composing". Then make sure that "When sending to a group, show all member addresses" is unchecked.
The auto reply is a feature that is better done on your mail server, as you Mac can only send an auto reply when it is on, with the Mail application open. If you use dot Mac, you can set up a vacation responder through the web, and you can leave your computer switched off.
If you really want to leave your Mac on when you are on holiday, you can set up a mail rule (Preferences, Rules).

Task Manager Not loading Properly. Giving Error No more threads can be created in the System.NAPStatus UI and Some other Task related Errors

I have a problem with the Task Scheduler. It is not opening properly it is giving Error Message box at this time i am unable to post. The Tasks Scheduler is starts with a error alert "No more threads can be created in the System.NAPStatus UI".
I am unable to view the history of the tasks schecduled.It is giving message as
"The user account does not have permission to Access the Task History."
How to fix it. It is frustrating as can't able to track my Tasks and Create new Tasks. Any Suggestions helpful.

How can I create a jpeg thumbnail image?

I'd like to create a clear jpeg thumbnail image of the first page of a document created in InDesign. It will be used in Constant Contact as a link to the online version of the document. (Constant Contact doesn't take JPEG's)

You may not have tested every situation and font, but I've done enough to know that sometimes it doesn't work as expected. And it wasn't a "challenge", it was an observation.
Here's 3 ways to make a JPEG - and the one that is the best is the one that was exported to PDF and then opened in Photoshop and then Saved as a JPEG.

How can I create an iBook using iBooks Author using images from a PDF?

I have a complex book with custom fonts and lots of images, and the client wants it on the iPad. So my most reasonable option seems to be to take images from a PDF and use them for the pages. However, images in iBook Author don't get "laid out" as expected in Portrait mode. How can I create a layout that is essentially one image per page in portrait mode, and then convert that to landscape mode? Or is there an easier way to go about this?

I can not load gmail properly. It refuses to load and suggests loading Basic HTML for slow connections. I do not have a slow connection and have no problem loading gmail in Explorer. This is happening on both Firefox and Firefox Developer. The Firefox Developer problem just happened with the new upload this evening. Regular Firefox has been happening for a couple of months. It happens on both my work computer and my home computer. I tried everything suggested including the suggestion to delete cookies, cache, and the cookies.sqlite file.

You can remove all data stored in Firefox from a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History > Show All History" or "View > Sidebar > History") or via the about:permissions page.
Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox from that domain like bookmarks, cookies, passwords, cache, history, and exceptions, so be cautious and if you have a password or other data from that domain that you do not want to lose then make sure to backup this data or make a note.
You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of the involved files.
It doesn't have any lasting effect, so if you revisit such a 'forgotten' website then data from that website will be saved once again.
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.

Can't create a folder is the message I get when using the extension manager CS4. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Carl, I've been wrestling with this too and have made some progress. I'm running EM CS6 and am just installing some xml files (custom file info panel) via my mxi. Some of these xml files reside in folders that already exist and some reside in folders I'm creating with EM (or trying to ...). For example, in my file info panel folder I'm including a "loc" for my localized files.
Problem: EM says it installs the extension and even displays the correct version in EM, properly checks for updates as I have that set up. However, it doesn't actually deploy any files (it fails silently). This same behavior exists on windows XP as well as windows 7 and I've confirmed this isn't a permissions issue.
Conclusion: This seems directly related to folder creation. Absolutely no files deploy using a mxp but using the same mxi to generate a zxp I'm able to achieve partial success - only the files deployed to existing folders extract, any folders that need creating (and the files that go inside them) are ignored and I see references to create folder failures in the EM logs I pulled. I'll paste those below.
I hope you guys can fix / identify this quickly or perhaps give me a workaround as to how I may be able to continue to use the mxp format vs. zxp since my plugin(s) are CS4 compatible as well as CS5 & 6. Thanks!

Can't create a .class file

I am glade to know this forum, I bet it is muche better than my instructor, any how ..
I am trying to do my first java program, the progam is working properly on netbeans 4.1 with jdk1.5.0, but when I go to the command prompt on windows XP it dose not work,
other programs work in the command prompt but mine dose not
what is good is that I know the problem, it is that I don't have the .class file I have the .java, and as I read it was supposed to be created automatically on neatbeans but unfortunatly it is not. can I creat it somehow ??!!
any sugestions ??

Just to keep information at finger tips etc.
I installed the recent JDK from JavaSun place for Windows (XP).
I could not compile a class file from a java file in Netbeans.
To compile a class file from a java file I needed to use javac.
Using cmd prompt (Command prompt) I could not use Javac (I forgot about PATH vars).
Right click my computer, properties in menu, advanced tab, Environment variables, Edit the path variable, add the directory c:\proram files\java\jdk????\bin\ (??? being the version of your jdk), then run cmd then javac works! (remembering of course to have ; seperator!)

Set the PATH variable if you want to be able to conveniently run the JDK executables (javac.exe, java.exe, javadoc.exe, etc.) from any directory without having to type the full path of the command. It's useful to set the PATH permanently so it will persist after rebooting.

Can't create computer account in Workgroup Manager

Hi everybody !.
I am installing a new Xserve with Mac OS X Server 10.5.6 and I am having some trouble with computer accounts in Workgroup Manager.
I have a couple of PCs with Windows XP that I have added to the Windows domain created by Mac OS X Server with no problem,and they do appear in my computer account list, with the name PC_NameX$.
My Xserve also appears in this list with the name ServerName.DomainName$
But my iMacs (with Mac OS X 10.4.11) are not listed. When I try to create their accounts, I write their names and their MAC address but when I push the button "Save", Workgroup Manager says that I can't create this account because there is a computer with that name and that MAC address yet.
I can't find a solution for this problem by myself. Could anybody give some advices to solve it ?.

In my computer list appears my Windows computer names (followed by a "$" symbol, i.e., name$) and my Xserve name followed by domain name and a "$" symbol, i.e, name.domain$. Finally, there is a Guest account I added a few days ago (without "$" symbol).
No iMac is listed here. When I try to add them manually, I write "Name", "Short Name" and "Ethernet ID" fields, and when I push "Save" button, I get this message:
"The name you have chosen conflicts with a name assigned to another computer. You can’t assign the name “Pollux” to two different computers. Remember that names are not case-sensitive when checking for conflicts." (Pollux is the name I gave to one of the iMacs).
If I change this name and use another one, but I don't change "Ethernet ID" and then push "Save", the message is:
"The ethernet address you have chosen conflicts with an ethernet address assigned to another computer. You can’t assign the ethernet address “00:17:f2:d3:38:95” to two different computers."
So, It seems that WGM knows Name and Ethernet ID from this iMac because it does not let me type them again, but I have not typed this information before nor the iMacs are listed in computer list.
This is what I don't understand.
I have have read chapter 6 "Setting Up Computers and Computer Groups", the one that starts on page 105, from top to bottom. I have not found a single clue that helps me solving this problem. Here explains the procedure when everything is working properly.
Finally, another piece from the puzzle. There is an iMac, that always connects to Directory with Airport interface. I have tried to add this iMac, manually. Well, I get the name conflict message, the Ethernet ID conflict message (with its airport id) and... an Ethernet ID message when I type its Ethernet ID. It seems Directory knows this Ethernet ID even, it has never been used to connect to it.
Is there some detail I am missing ???.

I going to recommend again, downloading and installing some video helper applications.
1. http://perian.org/ (this will add a number of different file types to the ones QuickTime already plays)
2. http://www.divx.com/en/software/mac (will add more file types to what QuickTime can play)
Either one of these might be necessary to get MPEG Streamclip to export the video. Failing that the only other thing I have found is an obscurve discussion thread on Avid.com:

I've figured out what the problem is on my end. The video came from Avid on a Windows machine and was encoded with Squeeze. I found out that the 2 seconds of black at the top of the video were at a different frame rate than the rest of the video. I chopped off the 2 seconds of black and started at the first frame of video, exported it with Quicktime Pro and was able successfully view the video in ProTools. Apparently Squeeze will let you create a movie file that has different frame rates within the same movie... This fixed my issue that was exactly as you describe, hopefully it might work for you.
Lastly, you could try converting the video clip using HandBrake

Owner can't create document in Extranet Document linbrary

Hi everyone,
one of our owners can't create a document in her document library in an extranet site that was created for her service.
When she wants to create a new document (in Offic Word), she got the next error messages:
"The operating system doen't have the right configuration to execute this application"
and
"The document could not be created, the required application may not be installed properly, or the template for this document library cannot be opened."
On her pc is standard Office 2010 installed. It is compatible with Sharepoint 2010.
Also, other owners can perfectly create new documents.
Has anyone has this problem? How did you solved it?

I updated to Firefox 4.0 and ever since then, I get this message when I try to open Firefox:

I have a Mac and have McAfee protection for Mac. This problem did not happen before I updated Firefox. Once I click on "OK" Firefox opens.

This issue is most likely caused by a McAfee extension that isn't working properly and you will have to disable the extension that causes it.
You can also check if there is an update available from McAfee that fixes this problem.

Are either of those 64 bit? If so, your problem is likely related to that.
A 64 bit Oracle client doesn't support OO4O at all, so this code will never work with that client. You need to use a 32 bit one.
If you are using a 32 bit client but on a 64 bit OS, I've found the 11.2.03 installer doesn't properly register the files. Manually registering OraOleDB11.dll may fix it, though we had to do some other registry stuff and it got very ugly. Backing up to a slightly older client should also fix the problem.

Can't see any tumbnails, Can't create proxy.

I'm new into the FCS support and I do have a problem now with my FinalCutServer version 1.5.2 running on an Xserver with V-trak.
First of all everything was running correctly but after some one did "propagate permissions" on my root harddrive everything was messed up ofcourse.
I was able to create a back-up of the FCS database (production media and proxy media folders are stored on the V-trak).
I did a complete clean install of the server and FCS and did place back the backup.
Everthing works fine now but the only problem is that I can't see any thumbnails, when I rightclick on an image and click on View Original that all works perfect. When I click in the top and then at the left the landscape looking icon I get the error message that he can't create a proxy.
This also happens with new images that go into FCS.
I did already try to right-click on an image and then Analyze or re-create proxy but none of that works.
Is there anyone who can help me or that have the same issues after restoring a back-up?

Update: Maybe important to know, my Proxies.bundle is empty.

Sounds like propagating the permissions is what screwed you up, as I'm sure you're aware. That's something that has to be adjusted in the Server Admin app, not in FCSvr. How does FCSvr connect to the storage? Whatever user it's connected as needs to have read/write access to your proxies bundle and also the directory in which it lives. It looks like it doesn't have write access, which explains why it's empty, so proxies/thumbnails/poster frames cannot be generated. Go to the "Search All Jobs" list and see what it says when you try to generate a proxy or thumbnail - I'm guessing you'll see a bunch of FAIL's. Open one of the jobs and look for the error message - I'm betting you'll see something to the effect of "Could not be created: Permission denied."
Permissions changes can really screw your distribution up - I find that permissions issues are what plague my own distribution almost weekly. If you have a distribution where your users have Finder-level access to the storage that FCSvr is cataloging, you may have situations where your users will create folders and files that FCSvr doesn't have write or even read access to, because of various reasons (maybe the user copied the folder/file from elsewhere, maybe their umask is 022, etc). That can lead to wanting to use Server Admin's "Propagate Permissions" functionality, which if used improperly can cripple your entire distribution.
