Can't delete images when importing from camera

I use Nikon Transfer to import images from my digital cameras but now I can't delete the images from the card once transferred. I've also tried Image capture but Delte is greyed out. It seems like a Permissions thing but I'm not sure how to check.
thanks

What he says is +"you want the image being shown to be exactly sized to your screen. Images from almost all modern cameras are much larger in pixel dimensions than your Mac's display, so they will be interpolated down to fit. When they are resized on the fly through interpolation they never look as crisp or pristine."+
The title of the piece is +"Resize Images for iPhoto Slideshows".+ He is talking about you resizing photos before you import so they will match the screen size during the display of a slide show on the screen - not iPhoto changing anything during the import of the photo but during the display of it - This is a bit like the cropping during printing questions - if you want to control exactly have is being shown (or printed) rather than use a generalized scheme to make photos fit a non native size then you much do the changes yourself
I'm sure that he is correct but since I use iPhoto as a photo library manager which lets me show quick and easy slideshows, I have no problem - *my original, unaltered photos are there in iPhoto* and available for use as I see fit - the degree of modification that takes place in the display of a slideshow has never even been noticeable to me - but then I do not see iPhoto as a single purpose slide show viewer - in fact that is a very minor feature for me

  • How can I delete photos when importing from iPhone 4

I'm using Aperture 3.13 on Mac OS X 10.7.1.  When I import photos from my iPhone 4 I am never asked to delete files from the camera roll.
What am I doing wrong?  How can I have Aperture delete photos from the camera roll once they are imported?

Aperture won't delete the photos from your iPhone. Most users have settled on using Image Capture ater importing into Aperture to delete the photos from the iPhone.

  • Does iPhoto alter images when importing from camera ?(+ tip for slideshow)

I came across the following article:
    http://www.andrewburke.orconhosting.net.nz/mac/builtin.htm#photo
The claim here is that during import iPhoto alters images in some way. The iPhoto experts, Terence OldToad, LarryHN and others, could you please comment, what's your opinions on this ?
    Resize Images for iPhoto Slideshows
If you are running a slideshow in either Preview or iPhoto, you want the image being shown to be exactly sized to your screen. Images from almost all modern cameras are much larger in pixel dimensions than your Mac's display, so they will be interpolated down to fit. When they are resized on the fly through interpolation they never look as crisp or pristine.
When I import images from my Nikon to the Mac, I keep them outside of iPhoto and at their original size, as an archive from which I might eventually produce some prints. From there I choose the best examples that I want to display onscreen and copy those out of the archive for processing. Each one of those favorites that I've chosen is then tweaked in an image editor (I use Gimp Shop) and the final step before sharpening is to resize it down to match the dimensions of my display.
My iMac is 1440 by 900, so if an image is narrower than that ratio I scale it so the height is exactly 900; if it's wider I scale it so the width is exactly 1440. After these tweaked and resized images are finished I import only those into iPhoto. Then when I run a slideshow they are displayed exactly at their original size (not stretched or shrunk to fit the screen) and the difference is stunning.

Have a look at your import setting specifically Store Files:
Make sure it is set to where you want the originals to go.

  • Any way to rename files when importing from camera with iPhoto?

I have a naming scheme that I've used when importing photos from my camera (e.g. 2008-09-12-Event ). I can't create a custom folder (in Pictures but outside iPhoto Library) or rename things when importing with iPhoto - is that right? I can't find any advanced options to import ...
If I want this (and don't want to use Adobe Bridge CS3), do I have to get Aperture?
    Thanks -
    Alexa
p.s. I haven't really figured out WHERE my photos go with iPhoto? I've been editing in Photoshop Elements 6 but then have to "Save As" to replace the file - saving it doesn't do it (I think that sends it to the iPhoto library somewhere?) Eek...

    Alexa:
    You might consider this workflow:
1 - using either Image Capture or a card reader upload the images to a folder on the desktop.
2 - name the folder with a brief description of the shoot. I use a short date and description: 08/01/08-Dinner at Toad Hall
3 - use a file renaming application like Resize! to batch rename the files to your specification. I use the international date (for the capture date) and a brief description: 2008-08-01-Dinner at TH-001.jpg.
This allows for good chronological searching and sorting as well as text searching on the description. It also avoids duplicate file name issues in the future. Granted a few extra steps up front but saves me a lot of time later on.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Problems applying metadata to images when importing from device

When importing images from a device into lightroom 2 I have created and selected a metadata template in the information to apply section, but when importing the images to the lightroom library it does not apply the metadata to the images. Can anyone help?

You mean you're importing directly from an USB-attached camera?
If you import from a card reader, do the templates apply?

  • Pixelated Images when Importing from SD Card

    Hi there,
Im having a recurring issue when importing images from my SD Card.
The issue is that when I try to view in the 'Loupe' view, the images don't load at full size, the '1:1' is absolutely tiny?
    Any ideas??
    Thank you.

Yeah, the black bars at the top and bottom of the tiny preview indicate it is a camera thumbnail, not a large-sized preview embedded in the raw file.  Without seeing the raw file, itself, it’s hard to know if there is actually a reasonable-sized preview embedded in it or just the tiny thumbnail.  If you want someone else to take a look, upload a raw file to http://www.dropbox.com/ and post a public download link to it, here.
And more importantly, as was just asked, does the image import ok.  If so then you’ll just have to do the importing, first, before you sort through what you want.

  • Why do I get two images when importing from i-photo into aperture

    Guys
I am a new convert to Mac's and am a keen amateur photographer ,I have transfered my photo library from my old pc into i-photo initially which worked fine and for my photo editing package I have loaded up aperture 3.When I transfer RAW photos from I-photo library into Aperture I end up with two raw images of the same photo one is called 'i-photo original raw' and the other ' i-photo edited raw ' I think I am probably missing a trick somewhere but am worried I will rapidly fill up file space with all these raw images.

When you import a Raw to iPhoto it automatically makes a jpeg Preview of the shot. Why? Because you can't do anything with Raw - can't print it, share it online, use it in other apps etc. So to allow you to use the file immediately the Preview is available. That's the second file you're getting.
You're not trying to use iPhoto and Aperture together are you? It's a waste of time and a cause of some frustration. Aperture is a complete replacement for iphoto, and you're really better off picking one horse to ride and forget about the other. Like iphoto, Aperture is a Photo Manager and post processor - but rather more powerful. Both apps are database driven. Aperture is not an "editing package".
If you do opt to stay with iPhoto then use an editor like Photoshop, Elements, Acorn, Pixelmator etc as your editng package.

  • IPhoto Freezes When Importing from Camera

Each time I've tried to import from my camera iphoto freezes during the import and I have to force quit it. I have tried copying the photos from the cameras folders to the computer and then importing from there but it also freezes. I did not have any problems importing using iphoto on 10.4 and I have now tried to import onto a friends computer (PC) and it works fine (so not my memory card or camera gone wrong).
Any suggestions on how to import successfully????????

    Nyssa
    Start with the troubleshooting basics:
    1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • Raw and jpeg will not show when imported from camera

I am doing a OCA degree in digital photography using aperture 3 . I have been asked to take Raw and J pag , open up in the program I use. And not the differance and the make changes.
I have 1d MK III and 7 d     I cannot get both file types to show side by side..   Some one tell me how to do this please. I must have clicked , ticked something , that I cannot find to put right again.

As always, start by copying the images on to a folder on the hard drive and then backing up the folder. Never import directly from camera or card into Aperture or any other images app.
Then since this is an exercise not a batch workflow, simply rename the RAW and JPEG versions of one image and separately import each renamed version into Aperture. The two should each be Masters, one from the JPEG original and one from the RAW original.
Note the JPEG may initially "look" better on the (relatively low resolution) display due to in-camera presets like sharpening, etc. not present in the RAW file. However the RAW file contains much more image data, is much more editable and is capable of making superior (relatively very high resolution) hard copy prints.

  • Downsized images when imported from Aperture

The latest batch if images I imported into iPhoto from Aperture were somehow downsized to half the size, ie from 3888x2592 to 1944x1296.  In other words, cut in half.  This has never happened before.  Previously, the iPhoto image had the same dimensions as the image in Aperture.  Would this have something to do with Lion?  I need images with over 3000 pixels on at least one side to sell them.  Thanks.  Larryt

How did you "import into iPhoto from Aperture"?
If you're using the media browser (File -> Show Aperture Library) then what you're getting are you Aperture Previews. The size of these is set in your Aperture Preferences.
If you exported from Aperture then the export preset you used in Aperture is what defines the size of the image.
So, no, this has nothing to do with Lion and only to do with the settings you are using in Aperture.
I can't help but wonder though, why you are using iPhoto at all, if you use Aperture. Is this complexity necessary?

  • I can't delete a favorite imported from "Firefox" into "IE 11". Why?

I uninstalled Firefox and started using IE 11. I imported my saved HTML bookmarks into IE. ONE folder used "***" (asterisks) in the title of the folder. When it was imported into IE, the "***" were replaced with "spaces", since IE cannot use that type of character as part of the title.
i.e. I titled the folder "***Flight Planning***". IE cannot use "***". So it now looks like " Flight Planning ". Just spaces. I tried renaming, deleting, and re-importing. It won't delete.
When I try to deleting it says "This is no longer located in c:\users\~...~\Favorites\". When I try renaming it, it says "This is no longer located in c:\users\~...~\Favorites\" or "could not find this item".
    How do I delete it?

Internet Explorer keeps favorites as individual .URL files. You should be able to delete the file manually.
    # Exit Internet Explorer.
    # Click the Windows logo orb on the taskbar to bring up the Start Menu.

    # In the Windows Explorer window that opened, open the Favorites folder.

  • Image looks quite different when imported from camera to Lightroom

    Hi there,
I am hoping that there is someone out there that might be able to help me with a problem I have.
I took a number of photos yesterday and I uploaded them to lightroom. The photos looked properly exposed with a nice color on the camera LCD screen. When I imported and then opened these photos in Lightroom, I noticed that the photos were underexposed with an orange cast on skintones.  The photos were not very nice at all, and I played with levels etc, but could not get the same look I saw on the LCD.
I shot in JPG Fine, colour profile in camera is Adobe RGB (1998). imac monitor is calibrated.
Has anyone experienced this or know how I might be able to correct the image to look more like what I am seeing on the LCD when I am shooting?
Any help greatly appreciated - Thanks!
    Donna

Since you are shooting jpeg, it is not the profile issue, so there are a small list of causes left.
    1. The camera LCD is lying to you. This is very possible, but most cameras have a display that, while not trustworthy absolutely, at least renders skintones sort of OK. You can test this by posting one of your originals (so NOT the lightroom edited versions) somewhere for us to see. We can check if the skintones are normal.
    2. The calibration is bad. Sometimes calibration hardware is simply defective and you will get bad results no matter what. To check this, use a color managed browser (Safari since you have a Mac is fine) and check out this page. The top image should look OK (normal skintones) no matter if you roll over your mouse or not.
    3. If it is not 1 or 2, Lightroom is applying either auto-tone or some camera defaults to your images or you are applying a develop preset upon import. Check this by opening the original directly in preview and comparing to the version in Lightroom. If this is the case, go to your Lightroom preferences, hit the Presets Tab. Uncheck "Apply auto tone adjustments". Then click on "reset all default Develop settings". Now go back to your images and "reset" their develop settings, which is easy to do in the quick develop panel you get in Library. Also, next time you import, make sure you do not have any presets selected.

  • Grayed out, weird photos when importing from Camera Roll

OK, wondering if anyone else is experiencing this? I use Photoshop's Bridge import to pull my photos of my iPhone 3Gs. When I do, I often have these weird photos - I'm not totally sure why they are happening. And, the good news is that once they are pulled, they appear to be fine, but I'm just looking to see if I'm not the only one.
They seem to be possibly related to:
    a) being taken by an alternate camera app (I've tried several, Camera Genius, Snapture, CameraFlash and CameraZoom - yep, trying to get a better photo!),
    b) being altered in some way (I've used Photogene to improve some, but it makes a duplicate?), or
    c) being copied or saved to the CameraRoll from another program (I'm a Phanfare user and their Photon app is phenomenal).
So, some pictures of examples below, but as long as they images are OK when they come in, is it just fine? I always worry when something is not what it should be on an Apple device or within an Apple software.
    Thx - Alexa

    Hi Lawrence -
Thanks for your response! I'm on a Mac so my options are different, but I think about using a more basic viewer and went to iPhoto and looked at the pictures on my phone as a device, and they all look fine (or some are not duplicates) - so maybe it's just a Photoshop import thing or ghosting issue?

  • Trouble with split into clips when importing from camera

I'm importing old video from mini DV tapes into iMovie. Unlike many other people writing here, I'm not having trouble with the connection between the camera and the computer. That works fine. I click "import" and the video IS imported.
The problem is, iMovie splits up the video it loads into little clips, some are long and some are less than a second long. Then, when it displays them in the clips window, they are out of order. For instance, the first few bars of a song might be pulled off and be in a short clip near the bottom of the list while the rest of the song is in a longer clip near the top. As a result, I am forced to carefully put them back in order -- like making a jigsaw puzzle -- as I drag them into the project.
Can I either turn off whatever it is that splits the input into clips (I'd like just one big clip) OR at least could the clips be displayed in the order that they were loaded from the camera so that clips that belong together are next to each other?
Thanks (and sorry for asking what is PROBABLY a dumb question),
    ak

The best answer I've found so far to my own question is the post from Randman here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9007098
As he points out, the problem is that iMovie is splitting and ordering the clips by their "time stamp", but if the video was previously edited (even by iMovie itself!) this time stamp may reflect the time it was edited rather than the time it was filmed. This is especially a problem for clips that have a title or special effect used on PART of it, because the modified part does not show up anywhere near the unmodified part in the list of clips.
Randman ALSO provides a sort of solution: rename the files themselves. I found this did work. (You rename them so that time stamps in the filename are in increasing order when listed in order by "last modified" which reflects the time they were loaded from the camera!)
I've written myself a script to do this automatically, but it is a bit of a hack and not really suitable for distribution. But, I suggest that someone with more time and programming experience than I write such a script that would help people with this problem!
