Can't disable my FTP Access ports!

Hi. I'm running MacOS X 10.3.9 on a Mac Powerbook with all of Apple's latest Security Updates installed. I did a virgin installation and no other software programs has been installed yet, and I need to find out if my current indicated FTP settings in the built-in Firewall panel is normal or whether maybe my system has been somehow hacked or attacked by an unknown virus.
In my computer's System Preferences/Sharing/Services panel, all options are currently off, and none of the items are checked. In the System Preferences/Sharing/Firewall panel, all options are also unchecked. But even though I've unchecked all items and they're supposed to be off, my FTP Access port is still showing the description "FTP Access (20-21, 1024-65535 from 20-21). First question - this lengthy description about my ports seem strange. Does everyone else show this same description in Panther, or is it just me?
But even more strange and bizarre is when I hover my mouse over the same FTP Access description, a balloon notation will pop up with the following information . . .
. . . "Ports 20 and 21 on your computer are open for FTP. If others connect to your computer from ports 20 and 21, then ports 1024 through 65535 are open. When you turn on FTP Access in the Services pane, you also allow the service access through the firewall on the indicated ports. To stop access through the firewall you must turn off this service using the Services pane." . . .
Personally, I don't want any ports open on my computer. Therefore this notation seems strange to me, especially considering that all my ports are supposed to be "off", therefore why is this notation still indicating that ports 20 and 21 are open. Even more strange is no matter what I do and no matter what settings I change, I can't alter the configuration of ports 20 and 21 and make them show as closed. I've tried everything, but ports 20 and 21 still remain open no matter what I do, at least according to this message. Question - Is what I'm seeing normal for everyone or are other users showing something different?
Below is an image of what I'm talking about :

Thanks in advance. Any help regarding this would be appreciated.

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode.  Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application unistaller. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Disabling anonymous ftp access

We have just completed a 9iFS install. The previous version of iFS was 1.1.6. We were having problems with anonymous logins (people were dumping garbage in our public folder) and we disabled anonymous FTP by changing the guest password (we also changed it in the IFSDavServletParameters.properties file and modified the ftpserver.def file by setting AnonymousPoolSize = 0 and AllowAnonymousConnections = false. We would like to do the same with 9iFS but these files no longer exist or have been renamed. What are the equivalent files in 9iFS or how else can we go about disabling anonymous logins?

  • How can we disable the OSX Access Point functionality without disabling all wifi.

Curious if anyone knows a way in Lion/Mountain Lion to disable the OSX access point features.
i have about 50+ macs in our company for iOS development. lately we've had a lot of rogue AP's showing up, people bridging the internal network by activating the "become a hotspot" feature in OSX. this is a *GREAT* feature, don't get me wrong. especially the latency and ease of use.. but in our case its causing problems, and i'm looking at a way to disable the AP features without disabling ALL wifi with something like.
    /usr/sbin/networksetup -setairportpower en1 off
this is a bit too much ,it disables the entire airport/wifi. we want to only disable the access point capabilities.
any hardcore guru's out there have some advise?
    TIA!

Enabling sharing services requires administrative access, so one option is to set this and only give folks standard "managed" access. The Internet Sharing service is a process called "InternetSharing" that runs as the root user and establishes all the appropriate services for the needed connection. You could technically remove or even rename this process on systems to prevent it from being used, or remove or disable its launch daemon. These files are in the following directories:
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.InternetSharing.plist
    /usr/libexec/InternetSharing

  • How can I disable local file access security check?

    Firefox 3.6.16
I would like to disable the security check used for blocking access to local files.

I don't know if this is completely correct, but...
I have the NoScript extension installed. When I looked in about:config, I found an entry called:
    noscript.allowLocalLinks
When I toggled this to "true," I was able to navigate via URLs to local and networked files.
When I looked it up, I found out that you can set this switch using the NoScript UI (Options|Advanced|Trusted).

  • How can I disable ALL public access to profile dat...

I don't know how you Micro-shunts manage to do it, but ever since the forced migration to the Micro-shunt version of the Skype client, it is getting prgressively worse with every iteration. I'd been a very happy Skyper until the enslavement -- sorry, forced migration. ALL of my profile information (what little there was) was 100% private, I only gave my contact details to people I wanted to have it. I was never plagued by spam, never bothered by block-avoiding boojums. Since allowing the current horror onto my Mac, I get over a dozen complete randoms -- all of them with dubious female names from far-away lands -- with contact requests per week, and in the space of the six hours I mistakenly had my mobile phone on my profile, I received four spam SMSes, all of which I was charged to receive. I soon put a block on those so-called premium SMS services. So far, Microsoft, you have taken away much of what makde Skype, and given nothing but frustration (and windows three times larger but holding a quarter of the information) since you took over. Now, please tell me, dear Micro-machines, how the BLEEDIN' 'ECK do I turn off ALL my private information that you are currently putting up on public display? I DO NOT want to be searchable. I DO NOT want to be pestered. Please restore the option for this. The paid offer of a VPN to the Chinese MSN network is looking more appealing by the day, and I'd rather spend money so I don't get hassled than put up with the torture of the past three months.

Hi, Hyram, and welcome to the Community,
I am a PC, so this is how I would accomplish your goal (I recommend performing these procedures via a computer rather than a mobile device):
Access your profile from your account (where the Contact list is), and you should be able to remove all information which defaults to public view, leaving the choices as "blank" or "not specified."
Check your privacy settings to ensure they indicate you receive audio calls, video calls, and private messages from people on your contact list only.  Remember to Save your changes.
You must contact Skype Customer Service to request your account name be removed from the search directory.  Here is a link to the instruction on how to contact Skype Customer Service via their secure portal: Contact Customer Service   As you know you wish to contact Customer Service, skip past Step 2 of the instruction where you will see various FAQ articles and other information to review and proceed to Step 3, Continue Support Request.   I find it easier to sign on to the Skype website and then go through the contacting Customer Service routine.
I still receive random, occasional, unsolicited contact invitation requests, however far fewer than previously.
    Best regards,
    Elaine

  • How can I disable web/data access during certain hours?

I have added a feature to my wireless account restricting my daughter's text/data/surfing access during evening hours.  I thought I was pretty clever and assumed she would only have access to her music on her iPhone.  Turns out she can still access all she wants using our home WIFI so my sceme is rendered useless.  Other than confiscating her phone each evening, does anyone know how I can restrict wifi on her phone during certain hours?
Also, does anyone have a nano?  Thinking she could use that for music and to set her alarm, but I don't think the nano has an alarm function.
    Thanks for your input!

No way to restrict it during certain hours. You can restrict it always, or never. Parental supervision is one solution. It's a losing battle to try to outwit children. It's better to require trust, with consequences if trust is breached.

  • HT5594 Can I disable Yahoo's access to Loc Svcs without disabling the iPad Loc Svcs?

I was using the browser on the iPad tonight & "Googled" Yahoo maps.  A pop-up said Yahoo wanted to use location based services; it only had an OK button, no Decline button and no other way to close it or the web tab. It wouldn't allow me to access the browser back arrow. It seemed wrong to force the iPad user to "Ok" their request.  How do I disable only Yahoo's access to loc based services without disabling the iPad location services?  Thank you

  • Disable snmp trap link-status only on access ports?

    Hello,
I am searching for a way to disable the snmp trap link-status only on access ports.
The problem is that we have a lot of new devices which have no port scheme, so I can't say that everytime the router uplink on a switch is on port X or Y.
So I have to figure out where my uplinks to routers, accesspoints or other switches are and set all other ports to
    no snmp trap link-status
    no logging event link-status
    spanning-tree portfast
Campus Manager knows the uplinks between the devices, but there is no way to perform such a change, right?
The next problem is, that there is nothing configured on the ports, so I can't search for a string by using compliance check in RME.
Is there any posibility to get the topology informations from CM together with the configuration feature from RME?
    Thanks a lot!
    Sven

    Hello,
    thanks for your reply.
I thought of something like you wrote...
There is a best practice report for disabling cdp on access ports.
Creating this report for a switch and click on "fix" the CM will configure the command "no cdp enable" on every access port.
So I will have a difference between uplinks and access ports.
The problem with that solution is, that I can't fix all my switches with one job.
And with >1000 switches it is not really possible to click every device.
    Any further advice?
    Thanks!

  • FTP access went bye-bye

On our new server, we have had a crash or two. After the latest crash, the FTP server stopped accepting regular FTP connections. I can access via HTTP and SFTP, but I get an authorization error (530) when I try to log in to upload pages. I went into my Server Admin program and found that most of my services register my most recent startup, however, the FTP start time is the shipping date of the machine. I have tried all the quick fixes, restarts, etc. and am close to wanting to reinstall the FTP service -- but the server won't let me because we have already updated to 10.4.8. I could sure use some help here as I can not find any discussions or postings from Apple that would help.
    Thanks.

Thanks for the assistance. I also found out that this
problem is recurring due to my CrushFTP. Whenever I
use the 'Install CrushFTP OS X Integration' this
problem with FTP Access occurrs as it should because
CrushFTP can't run if FTP Access is not enabled. I
know dumb on my part for not realising this sooner,
    but thanks very much.
My problem was also caused by CrushFTP; I emailed Ben Spink (the developer) about it, and he answered:
"Don't use the osx integration piece. Something changed in the config file of osx and it will no longer work. (...) I may need to send you a fixed file if the integration piece corrupted the osx ftp config. Let me know if everything works correctly when not using daemon and ftp sharing. (you want the ftp sharing system pref off)"
So I guess you shouldn't turn OS X integration on..

    Dear All,
I have small question, I am planning for Cisco 3750X with 10G SFP+ service module. I want to know that whether it can be used as Access Ports connecting to server as this is mostly used as uplink port.

Well if you want to connect anything with 10g to a 3750X, you're limited to using a module with 10g ports.
Other than 10g capability on some module cards, something to note, the module ports, I believe, are supported by larger buffers (including the gig module ports).
As the others have noted, you can use any port for any purpose.  However, if you connect a server to a 10g port, be aware you might start to see drops on your other host (gig) ports as the server will now be able send faster than the host port can receive data.  To minimize this, you might either disable QoS on the switch (providing maximum buffers to all egress traffic) or you might need to tweak buffer resource settings (the default settings often drop some packets, when there are bursts, of default marked packets).

  • RDP listening port needs to be changed on one client PC - can't connect via Anywhere Access

We have a setup with Server 2012 Essentials and 10 workstations. We have setup Anywhere Access and is working fine. We have one system (Windows 7 Pro) on the network running AADS Server (use to be called XP Unlimited). This allows several users to logon
to that PC remotely at once as well as someone local using it. This PC needs to be changed from the default 3389 port due to the new AADS Server version requiring it. When ever we change the listening port we cannot remote desktop into this PC. It is available
in Remote Web Access Portal but just sits trying to connect. We have allowed the new connection in the Windows Firewall and even turned the firewall off as a test with no luck.
My question is, can we change the default 3389 port connection that the Server redirects you to for one PC on the network? If not how do you change in the Server to look at another local port for RDP once in the portal?
    Thanks, Jason

    Hi Jboy,
Can you navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SYSTEM, CurrentControlSet, Control, Terminal Server, WinStations and RDP-Tcp.  Right click on the PortNumber dword and select Modify.  Change the base to Decimal and enter a new port between 1025 and 65535
that is not already in use. Finally click OK.

  • How can I disable data access on C1-01 ?

I have a C1-01, for emergency use only.  Today it displayed an unsolicited "Download Failed", message, and sure enough, my paygo account had been emptied.  How can I prevent all data access, ie attempts to update firmware, internet access, etc?
    TIA, Richard
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

easiest way is to contact your network operator and ask them to disable your data plan and all internet access on your device. there are also a few miscellaneous settings in your phone, so you can try deleting access points if they are displayed in the Settings. i would check the phone Settings menu and the Web browser settings for items that you can turn off / disable.

  • Can FTP-access to field point log file interrupt the running program?

Can FTP-access to field point log file interrupt the running program?
We have a problem where our factory process control program on a Field Pointer suddenly stops the process. We are running the development system on a PC, wich deploys the program on the Field point, with user interface on the PC. Quite often the process stops for no apparent reason. I'm not sure right now if the control program on the Field Point is still running or if it stops. We use FTP from a distant PC (over VPN) directly to the Field Point to check if the process is running, by looking for date and size of log files produced during running process. I've never opened och copied any log file during process run, because this I'm sure this would cause problems for new log entries to be written. But can the mere looking at the log folder via XP-pros ftp-functionality cause the Field Point to have problems writing data to a log file?
I'm not sure how windows XP pro handles "my network places" when it comes to FTP, it look that it keeps some kind of local copy of the folders, or at least the files opened.
Next version of the program will have only basic functionality on the Field Point, leaving logging etc. to another program on the PC, but right now we are stuck with this system.
    Ola A

It turned out that the problem lies in the harware of the production machine, it was not a labiew-program problem at all!
