Can't find the icon Macintosh HD on my desktop, how do I get it back?

I just noticed that the Macintosh HD icon is missing from my desktop...have looked all over for it. Search just gives (path/) no path. Finder is working well, but in trying to resolve the situation I clicked on the arrow beside the list of hard drives in the left column in finder window and I lost the icon there. I know, very stupid!! Please help!

Go to Finder > Preferences > General tab > Check Hard disks.

You can get it back into the sidebar in Finder > Preferences > Sidebar tab > Check Hard disks.

If so then could be a hardware problem sinc it also says:

Did you purchase it from the iTunes Store or did you do the purchase from the App Store on the iPad?
Go to Search, and type in Pages, if nothing shows your iPad hasn't downloaded it.
Tap on App Store > Updates > Purchases, any sign of installation in progress? It is reasonably large so may take a while.

I found the answer to my question.
When you attach a device (iPhone, iPad) to your Mac, in iTunes 12 in appears as a tiny icon in the second "row" of the iTunes display. Click the icon and the familiar iTunes display for the device appears. From there, on the Summary screen, you can see the dates of the backups of the device (iCloud and backup to the computer). You can also use the button to backup to the computer.

The icon for Safari has probably moved to make room for new apps. Scroll the Home screen to look for it.
You cannot reverse the upgrade.

Just let it download and then delete it afterwards! When its done touch it and hold down until it starts to shake and hit the x in the corner to delete it! Hope this helped!

Look under the Store menu in iTunes on your computer for the "Check for available downloads" command and run that. You may find the tracks there to be downloaded.
If not, contact the iTunes Store Customer Service department from their Support page (select the category and subcategory closest to the issue you're reporting and you'll find either an "Express Lane" button - just follow the instructions to get to the contact form, or an "Email Us" button) and explain the problem to them.

Swipe from screen to screen to look for it. It cannot be deleted from the iPad.
You can reset the the home screen layout but that returns the home screen to the original out of the box set up - but it will restore the icon to the home screen.
Settings>General>Reset>Reset Home Screen Layout.
