Can't get [ ] brackets to work to increase or decrease

I am new to this forum. I have CS2. My C drive crashed and I had to re-format my hard drive, and re-install all of my programs. Since then, my brackets[ ] with not work to increase or decrease brush sizes. I have to use the drop-down menu to change brush sizes every time. This is getting annoying and before re-installing photoshop, I thought I would ask to see if there is something that I should do to correct this. Anyone else ever have this problem?

I went back again into keyboard shortcuts.When I delete the ] key for increasing brush size and then manually enter in the same key stroke [ ...a "ý" comes up (but it's a capital). When i manually type in keystroke for decreasing brush [ a "U" with a little triangle on top (can't remember what it's called) comes up. When I then press the brackets keys on my computer, the increase and decrease works..but it bugs me that it's not with the right keystroke. I tried resetting the keystroke shortcuts and then I'm right back again to the same problem. And YES (if you are wondering) my CS2 is a legal copy. I will try later tonight to retry another keyboard. I have to get my husband to do it cuz you have to pull everything out and it's an ordeal due to cabinet. Any other suggestions before yanking everything out. This thing bugs me!
