Can't get external speakers to work (not wireless)

I have the same speakers I had with my former Mac, they are not wireless, they plug in and they are turned on and working perfectly.  But my computer keeps using the internal speaker.  How do I get it to "see" the externail speakers?  I checked all the connections, turned the speakers on and off (They are "powered" speakers, JBL).  Thanks

Thanks so much.  I swear I tried this before, but saw the other person's post and tried one more time -- plugged the speaker jack into the microphone input.  It worked!!! On my old Mac, they were 2 separate inputs.  Mine are working fine now, I feel silly for taking up your time but I really appreciate you replying.  Happy Nwe Year!!  PS I did go to System Preferences but didn't see that choice; I guess I was lucky that my solution happened to be simple, probably because they were the same speakers I got for my old Mac.  Thanks again!!

  • Can't get external speakers to work using headphone jack on MacBook Pro

I have a male-male connector that I use for my iPod to radio or multimedia player to play on external speakers. When I plug it into my MacBook Pro, sound goes dead on the MacBook Pro, no sound comes out of the external speakers, and the preferences on the MacBok Pro say "Headphone : Headphone port" and volume is at full, and mute is off. Am I doing something wrong, or do I need a repair?  I unplug the cable and sound comes back.

No such problem, eww. The speakers were plugged in and working. I shut off the speakers, but did not unplug them, and when I turned them back on, there was no sound. I tried my headphones, and there was no sound from them, either. The headphone port was dead. I restarted, with no change.
I was getting ready to do an SMC reset and read the preliminary steps. The last one before resetting the SMC was to shut down the MacBook Pro. That brought the port back to life. When I restarted, I had my external speakers back.
    Go figure.
I have not upgraded to Lion because I have PowerPC apps that I want and/or need, so this was not a Lion-related bug. I am certainly glad the port isn't dead. I was not looking forward to having to send in my MacBook Pro for repair.

  • Can't get external speakers to work ...

I want to use my old Altec Lansing ACS340 speakers with my new iBook, if possible, but when I plug them into the audio out, nothing happens. I know the sound is on (the iBook speakers work, and if I plug in headphones, they work), and I know the speakers are hooked up correctly and on and plugged in. I just don't know what to do to try to make them work with my laptop. Are they incompatible?

Glad that your speakers are working now, Laura.
In my experience, sometimes you have to check the setting in System Preferences: Sound and choose the speakers from the Output options, assuming that you have more than one option on the list.
You may find that the Internal Speakers are selected. If so, and your Altec Lansing speakers are showing up, you need to select that instead of the internal speakers.

  • Can't get external monitor to work

I've used a Mac laptop for the last 8 years, finally decided to get an external monitor for home use.
I purchased a 25" Hanns-G HZ251. It's not working as I would expect it to work. I've got a standard DVI connection on my older MacBook Pro so I'm connecting via a DVI to DVI cable.
The only way I can get the monitor to display what is actually on my laptop is to have my laptop open and mirroring turned on. I thought I could have my laptop shut and the monitor would still work when connected, but when I shut my laptop it just goes black.
If I leave my laptop open but turn mirroring off, I get the generic purple Mac desktop, not my desktop.
    What am I doing wrong?
There's an install CD that comes with it, but that only runs on a Windows machine. I appreciate any advice, I'm fairly technically handy but this is my first foray into using external monitors, so I'm definitely struggling to figure this out. Thanks.

You will have to keep them both open and play around with monitor settings until you get them both working. Keep doing "Gather windows" in System Preferences to get the display preferences window for the 2nd monitor and change it each time it doesn't display anything.
I don't know what it means "you will have to set it".
You have to set the desktop for the additional screen. Once you get closed clamshell to work, the external monitor will be your primary screen and you won't have to worry about it.

  • Can't get internal speakers to work

I can't get my built in speakers to work. I checked in my sound preferences and optical digital out port is the only thing there. I haven't a clue and thought I'd ask here and see what all you amazingly smart peeps had to say
    Thanks so much!!
and there is no red light coming from the plug in hole

System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
Make sure Mute is not enabled.
Option click the speaker icon in the menu bar and see whether the internal is selected or not.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.

  • 1212m - can't get external sync to work under XP Home...

I gave up trying to run this card under my XP64 system because it's not compatible with 64-bit apps. That's the subject of another thread...
I used to run it in an XP Pro system (32 bit) but have now moved it to an XP Home system and I can't get the external sync to work. The sync is coming in on the ADAT line and I select it in the options menu but the mixer always says "Internal" source for the clock. Furthermore, when I set the source to external, close the options dialog, then re-open it, it's back on internal.
The ADAT lines are correctly linked because I can hear the distorted audio coming across. What's more, when I set external sync in the options, the card seems to be sync'ed because the distortion goes away, even thoug the mixer still says internal sync. But if I shut down and re-boot, or if I change sample rate on the external source, it goes back to the distorted sound.
Let's see if this one gets any responses...

  • Suddenly can't get remote speakers to work

After having inserted a funky CD and having had the CD drive make strange noises, I tried to eject the CD, and it wouldn't. Tried to shut down, computer wouldn't. So took out the battery, reinstalled it, could eject funky CD. After that, tried to get music to play over my remote speakers, and, though I am able to go online and bring up ITunes, I can't get the remote speakers going. The stereo's fine. When I try to play music through the remote speakers, I don't get the "Connectin to remote speakers" message at the top of Itunes anymore; I get a special pop-up box that tells me it's connecting to remote speakers. But it never does: wheel spins and spins forever, no connection ever occurring.
Thanks to whoever has a solution to try.

Try shutting down ituens. Unplugging your AE, then
replug in your AE, give it about 2-3 minutes, then
    start up iTunes again.
See if that gets you up and running.
    THANKS.
What I did was shut down the computer, unplug Airport, push the reset button, and plug it in again. Did the trick! Thanks again.

  • Can't get e-mail to work using wireless router . . .

    Hi everyone,
I'm trying to help my sister get her e-mail working. She is running a Macbook with 10.5. She is sharing an Internet connection with a PC, via a wireless router (a D-Link unit). The ethernet goes from the modem to the router, where it is hooked into the PC via cable. Her Macbook is accessing the router wirelessly via Airport.
She can surf the net perfectly fine, however, she has no e-mail functions. When she tries to send or receive e-mails, she gets error messages about ports being unable to send or receive info. If she plugs the ethernet cable directly into her laptop (instead of going wireless), e-mail works perfectly fine.
Any ideas where I can look? I played around for a couple of hours but couldn't come up with anything. I have no experience with networking, however, my hunch is that it's some sort of settings problem with the router that are preventing her e-mail from working in this setup. The bizarre thing is that everything was working fine a few days ago and then the e-mail servers went down with her ISP (neither the PC or Mac could get e-mail). When they came back up, the PC was able to run some self-diagnostic software and resolve it's e-mail issues, but the problems with the Macbook persist.
We could simply just hook everything back up to "hard" wires through a switch, but she really wants the wireless functionality.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the response orangekay. As it turns out, they took back the router that they had bought and they picked up an AirPort Express station and now everything is working perfectly fine again.
Still not sure what the exact problem was but my sister is happy with how things worked out

I currently have it connected with the optical lead (in my previous setup I was using the dedicated digital lead) and I have tried every combination of buttons I can think of on the DTT3500 itself. I have Windows set to 5.1 and I've used the MSI utility to setup and check the speaker outputs, but still only get the front L&R channels.

  • Can't get External API to work in IE7

I'm trying to get a Flash Ad to call a Javascript function in
an Ajax page. I'm using ActionScript 2.0 ExternalAPI to call a

  • Can't get external editor to work

Using LTR 3.6 on iMac, external editor PSE 10.  I choose option to open in the external editor after applying any LTR changes.  File is created in LTR, external editor is opened, but image file is not opened.  It used to work fine.  I had a hard disk failure recently, installed new drive, restored everything from Time Machine back up.  All apps seem to work fine. I also reset the external editor in preferences (from PSE 8 to 10) to no effect.  Any ideas?

    Hi,
I currently have the same problem, but have found a temporary solution while looking for a permanent one. The temporary solution involves resetting the SMC. To do this follow these steps:
-First connect the cable to both your TV and your MacBook Pro and make sure both are powered on.
-Then shut down your MacBook Pro
-On the left side of your keyboard press command, alt (option), shift and the power button at the same time, holding them for a second and then releasing them at the same time.
-Wait about 10 seconds and then power on your MacBook Pro, the display should be detected and working.
As I said earlier this is only a temporary solution and I am looking for a permanent one, so any more help would be appreciated.
Let me know if it works or not.

  • How can i get my speakers to work?

the speakers to my phone wont work. but just for music and sound effects also none of the volume bars appear on my phone. the ring still works for calls but not the ring for txt or anything else.

First off check all volume settings on the iPhone. Make sure that the volume s turned up and that the mute/slide switch is not showing orange. After that if the iPhone continues to have sound issues you may want to try a few more simple steps such as a hardware restart or resetting all settings. however by the sounds of the issue you may want to simply attempt to restore the device through iTunes. of course if you decide to do so I recommend backing up all of your content and importing your photos. Also to test for possible hardware issues you should setup the iPhone as new after restoring it and test the speakers for sound. I hope this helps.
Hardware restart: Hold down the both the sleep/wake button on top of the device and the home button underneath the touch screen for roughly ten seconds or until you see the Apple logo. Once you have the Apple logo on the screen release the buttons and the iPhone should restart.
Reset all settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings.

  • Equium A200-196: Cannot get all speakers to work with Creative T7900 home cinema system

I run windows Vista home premium, on my Toshiba Equium A200-196, and i have a 7.1 Creative T7900 system.
I cannot get all speakers to work. Only the woofer and two front speakers are currently playing sound.
The sound option in the control panel doesn't give me any options besides stereo speakers.
I have no option of selecting 5.1 or 7.1 speakers and i need to know do i need a software driver (all drivers are showing up as up-to-date), or do i have to change some other option, or purchase an external sound card?
I only have two jack inputs, a mic in and headphone out. How can i get all speakers to work and achieve the home cinema experience?

    Hi there,
I dont think that the sound card is capable to do 5.1/7.1 since there are many more jacks required then only one "sound-output".
If I were you I would purchase a external USB-soundcard which is capable to do 5.1 or 7.1 to deliver you the full home-cinema experience.
Another solution is not existent. Sorry mate.
