Can't get G4 & G5 to network

Just bought a New Intel G5 and had the marvelous idea of networking them. I did everthing just the way the support article suggested, but am not finding much success.
Each time I go to "Go" and then Network, there appears to be a different reason that it won't connect to my other computer. Sometimes the other computer simply never shows up in the window, sometimes it shows up for a split-second and then dissappears, and still other times it shows up but when I click on my other computer's name, I get that wonderful beachball of death for a while and then the 'networking failed' dialog that says that the other computer has incompatible "AFP Software"—whatever that is. Both Macs are running 10.4.8. The G5, of course, is Intel.
And, yes, I know how to do this through Firewire as a Target Disk, but then the external hard drives aren't accessible.
Like many things on computers these days, the instructions seem simple, yet they simply don't work as advertised.
Anyone know what I should do next?

Intel G5? Interested in seeing that one. The G5 actually refers to the revision or famly of PowerPC processor used in a particular platform...G4, G5, etc. You must mean an Intel iMac, right?
Anyway, you'll need to turn on personal file sharing:
System preferences->Sharing->Click the checkbox for Personal File Sharing in the list. Wait for the service to start, and you should see a little not below the list box displaying how to find your networked computer.

Since you are using the same sim I suggest you contact your service provider to check your provisioning.

would love to...way over my head so far...upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.2 - I have another MAC (motorola chipset...maybe 10.6?) and 3 PCs on the network...the older MAC linked up through the network just fine...
I can see the Yosemite MAC on the PCs...I can open customer file folders (I am a printer) from the shared drive...I can drag files (let's just call them PDFs, they mostly are) to the MAC customer file...but if I try to open them from the PC I get an error message that says permission denied - or may be in use by another user. There are no other users. After I uploaded to Yosemite, I noticed most if not all drives and or folders had permissions changed to either no access or to read only...I've changed as many as I could find...drives, and folders...I can open those same files if I'm on the yosemite mac...Here's the catch, though...I was on a different floor and that PC can open a PDF on the Yosemite...but the RIP that prints our large format prints now won't print those files (whole RIP locks up) unless they are first dragged to the PC desktop...then all is fine. I thought it was MAC upgrade oriented, but I do have a PC that halfway works...I'm really stymied...

Can't get Bluberry iMac on network

Got a Bluberry iMac and can't seem to get it to see my existing Airport network. Purchased and installed an Airport card and adapter for it. Airport is on, but it can't seem to pick up the network even when only 3 feet away from base station. I even disabled my basestation security settings to see if it could pick it up. No dice. How do I figure out if the card actually works?
I reinstalled the OS(to an older version 10.2) since thats all I had(came with 10.3.7). I can't even connect to my network via ether net cable to the netgear switch. I have an ethernet cable connected but for some reason it can't seem to find it.
I'm stumped.it should not be this hard.
My network setup is Earthlink DSL into my snow airport station which distrubutes IP addresses and is connected to a Netgear switch. I already have an AL 15 Powerbook and a Ti667 set up on the same network via airport that works just fine.
Clues? How do I check that the airport card is indeed working? Why wont even cabled ether net not work?

The instructions are in KB 58537, iMac (Slot Loading): Installing or replacing an AirPort Card. Take a look at steps 8-10.
That still does not explain my inability to get the ethernet connection running via direct connection to the switch(which is downstream from the Snow Airport base station).
Either you have the wrong type of Ethernet cable, or the Ethernet port is broken. Your iMac does not have an autosensing Ethernet port therefore you need the correct type of Ethernet cable for the situation. A direct connection to an Ethernet switch requires an Ethernet patch cable (straight through). Some situations require an Ethernet crossover cable.

WAP610N - Can't get an IP from network

hi! i bought a Linksys WAP610N today, i placed it so i could get a signal where i can't normally.
The thing is i configured it correctly, well at least i think, i can see it on my wireless network, with a good signal, but on my Android tablet (Google Nexus 7), it can't get past the "Obtaining IP address".
I called the technical support, the person there tried to help me for about 1 hour, we tried different settings, we upgraded firmware from 1.0.01 to 1.0.04, but it didn't helped. Now he said someone will call me tomorrow during the afternoon. But then i thought i would post this problem here so maybe i could fix my problem faster.
My router isn't Linksys, it's a Netgear, i don't have wireless problem when i connect my tablets or any other wireless device on it, it's just that i bought this WAP610N to have the signal in my bedroom, where i don't get any signal normally.
If someone can help me with this before they call me, or maybe i could even find a better solution here on this community.

Just like what earthmyrll120288 said, this access point is designed to make your wired devices go online wirelessly thru your router. The best for your setup is the range extender which will provide internet access to hard to reach areas through the wired or wireless connections in your home. Basically, it will repeat the signal from your router to the area where you’re having problems getting a good signal.
When you said that it worked when you put on top of your desk and it gave you better coverage, it would really do that since the wireless settings of the router are already synchronized on that access point. I’m thinking that the tablet is still getting the connection from the router. If ever there are still problems especially with the signal, you might consider the RE1000.

Two options. You could look into an international data roaming plan with AT&T (we are talking about an AT&T iPad2, right?). Or, you can get a pay as you go or prepaid SIM in the UK from some local carrier who offers such a thing for a data plan and use that. Try looking on some of the UK carrier web sites for info about prepaid data - O2, Orange, Vodofone all offer iPad plans in the UK (there are a couple of other carriers too, but I cannot remember them).

Can't get Vaio to acess network

Hopefully someone can help me out. I have an airport express that has been working fine with my mac. My roomate has a Sony Vaio. When she tries to access my network it says that it is the incorrect login information. But I am positive I have been typing in the correct names/passwords. How can I get an ad hoc network to remain when I restart the device? I have to re-create it everytimerestart

We use mac mini's in various mobile applications and its impossible to create an adhoc network and have it automatically sign back on with it when we restart or turn the mac mini back on. We use them in airplanes and the unit does not stay powered once the airplne finishes its trip. So we hae to train the pilots to turn it on and setup a new network and its very pesty. Any thoughts on how to fix this. We have already tried to create a new location and mive thr adhoc network to the top of the heirarchy list but it still wont work.

Hmmm - I may be misreading your problem, but try this.
Create the network. When you have the computer connected to the "server" computer, make an alias of the server computer and place it on the desktop. You can try putting the alias into the computer account "log in" items.
Restart. The computer should execute the log in items and join the network if its available.

Can't get eMac onto existing network

Hi,
I have an iMac G5 running Tiger 10.4.9 in my home office connected to a BT Homehub broadband modem / router via an ethernet cable.
My wife uses an eMac 1GHz G4 running Panther 10.3.9 in a nearby bedroom that connects to the internet via Airport Express through the BT modem.
I recently bought a MacBook Core2Duo running 10.4.9 and connect to the internet via Airport & the BT modem.
I have successfully created a network between the iMac and the MacBook wirelessly but cannot connect to the eMac with either.
The Mac's are all named differently but we have the same admin password for all three Macs. The eMac 'sees' the other two Macs but when I click on connect for either under Finder - network when asked for a password on the eMac the password is incorrect so cannot connect.
I have no idea what this other password could be, when or how I set it. The eMac works flawlessly otherwise and connects to the internet no problem.

In paragraph 4, you say that you cannot connect to the eMac when initiating a connection from either the iMac or the MacBook. Then in paragraph 5, you say the eMac sees the iMac and the MacBook but it cannot connect to either one.
So, just to make sure I understand, you cannot connect to anything from the eMac nor can you connect to the eMac from anything, i.e., both directions to/from the eMac are dead?
In either case, following on with Robbie's post, you are specifying either the short username or the long user name of the user account that you want to access on the destination machine when attempting to login?

Can't get my o/b network working ???

Everything working fine till i plug in the network cable to the onboard LAN. It says network cable not connected and when I click repair it shows "Windows renewing Ip address" which it never succeeds in doing ?????
I've got the Win XP SP2 standard fire wall only and I've tried with it switched off.
I've just changed to a new mobo, but never had this problem before with o/b LAN or SP2. It usually fires up straight away as soon as I plug in the cable. The cable connects direct to a hub and everone else connects to the internet via my pc.
If I start the pc with the network cable already plugged in, it spends 5 mins searching for something before I can run any other programs !

I upgraded to Maverick to see if it would fix this problem, and it did not. When using airport utility, latest version, it says that the extreme has an excellent connection, but fails to extend the network. This started the last time I upgraded Lion. You may want to try performing a factory reset on the AirPort Extreme.
If you have configured your Wi-Fi base stations in the past, it may be helpful to do a factory default reset of each Wi-Fi base station that will be part of the wireless extended network before you begin.

I had this problem post 6.1. Not sure if it was a coincidence, but I'd just recently changed my password after being convinced I'd been hacked, due to being told I was entering my password wrongly, repeatedly by iCloud / iTunes. It turns out my iCloud account on my Settings -> Mail, Contacts and Calendars was listed as Inactive. Putting in my details, turning off Contacts over iCloud (thus deleting them) and turning them back on again, repopulated my contacts from iCloud with numbers attached to them.

Can't get airport to connet to wireless network at school?

Like many of you - I have a brand new Mac Book and purchased it for the purpose of using it at school. But I can't get connected to thier network - I have the user name and password and am entering them correctly, but when I go to connect the window closes it just says Authenticating over and over for like 3 minutes at the top of my screen then nothing happens. No error message, no connection, nothing...
I updated to 10.4.7 - and I am trying to connect to a Closed WPA2 Enterprise network and am using the connect option under the airport menu "other" according to my student connect kit after I loggon I should see a window that asks for 802.1X Authentication and I should then click "Show Certificate" check the "Trust Certificate" box then continue - I should then be able to open my internet browser where I will be directed to Cisco Clean Access logon (I have not made it that far as nothing happens after I try to connect).
Why? I thought this was supposed to be easy. Please help if you can.

hmm... ive had almost the same problem.. the router wont give an IP adress to my macbook so what i did was I entered the infrmation manually. try it it might work for you.. Clink apple>system preferences>network then click the airport.. then set it manually.. for the IP address, it usually starts with 192.168.1.100 so u can try 192.168.1.105, subnet mask set to 255.255.255.0, router to 192.168.1.1 or 10.0.0.1 or if not.. ask the routers brand and check it at the www.portforward.com for its default gateway.... then u can connect to its router by entering 192.168.1.1 or the 10.0.0.1 on the adress bar of safari then try to find the DNS SERVERS on your own... then put it in the dns server column.. it usually it comes in three... dns1, dns2 and dns3.. just put the dns server 1 and then press enter to put dns2 then hit enter agan then put dns3... then ur connected to the internet... hope this helps...

Yes, and it connects 10 times easier than any Windows based PC I have dealt with. As soon as you turn on your MacBook it will search for wireless networks (presuming you use wireless) and it connect straight up.

Getting Apple's "Midi Network" to work

I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro computer to work as a wonderful "slave computer". Basically, because I extensively use the "CPU & Memory hog" Kontakt/Kontakt Player programs, I purchased the new MacBook Pro to divide the work load. So far, it's proven to do this nicely! The MacBook Pro is a 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB's of SDRAM running on Leopard 10.5.4. I have an external hard disk drive which houses all of the instrumental sound libraries. The external hard disk drive is connected to the MacBook Pro using an eSATA connector. The audio device used is a new MOTU 828 MK3.
My older Mac Pro workstation is noted below. Please note that I have not upgraded the older Mac Pro workstation to Leopard YET. Although I do plan on upgrading the operating system, things are working quite fine using 10.4.11. I use M-Audio's Keystation Pro 88, connected to the older Mac Pro workstation, as the midi controller.

I can't get the Apple Midi Network to work between the two Apple computers. They both seem to see each other, but midi information does not seem to be transferred between the two computers.
At present, I have both networked via a NETGEAR 8 Port 10/100/1000 Mbps Gigabit Switch. This is so that I can have access to the Internet. Now, I am able to transfer files between the two computers. Both computers seem to "see" each other using this network method.
For the MacBook Pro, I am using a CAT6 ethernet cable. I think that this is also true for the older Mac Pro workstation.
I believe that I am configuring the "Midi Network" function correctly. I can see it via the Logic Pro 8.02 program (in the Environment).
Finally. . . I am able to use Music Lab's MidiOverLan CP3 between the two Apple computers!! This is solid! Why, though, am I NOT able to get Apple's "Midi Network" to work?? Am I misunderstanding its function?? Does it not work when one computer is operating under Leopard and the other (older) computer is using the older version?? Could it be the CAT 6 cables?? The NETGEAR switch??
At present, I am happy using the MidiOverLan CP3 program to communicate midi information between the two computers. It would be nice to be able to correctly use Apple's own software, though. (Maybe it's user error??)

Several months ago, I DID get this feature to work...And I'm sorry, I don't remember exactly what I did. It took several attempts. I linked my intel and PPC mactogether.
The problem was, there was too much of delay to make this a useful feature for realtime recording. I was trying to play a virtual instrument, that was a PPC plug-in while recording on a newer macpro..
If you were willing to create 'scratch' tracks one computer, using native Logic plugins, until you had all the midi data right. and then wanted to port midi over to the 2nd computer, and create a more detailed sound to port back into your 2nd computer, it CAN be done. but like I said the delay was too much..(I couldn't get it to be a realtime feature)
There was a 'delay adjustment' feature, in the midi, but I couldn't get that to be useful. If you have plug-ins that you absolutely can't live without, you can try this, but I found it to be too much trouble, and there were some computer lockups involved.
