Can't get my Mac to boot

Hi. I have a 2011 iMac, i5, originally with 4 Gb of RAM, currently running Mavericks. Today I tried do upgrade the memory with + 4GB. When I turned my mac on after installing the RAM, it worked and recognized the upgrade. Then, a few seconds later Safari crashed and, while showing information about the error and asking me to reopen Safari, the computer shut down suddenly. I pressed the power button to turn it on again and there was a screen telling me in 5+ different languages why my computer had shut down, and to type any key to continue. I pressed a random key and it went to the login screen. When I was typing my password to login on my user, a window poped up:  "calendar wants to have access to keychain 'login'". I allowed, finished typing my password and logged into my user. I waited to see if any app would crash, for some seconds it was fine, but I tried to resume a download from the AppStore (I was downloading OSX 10.10 Yosemite), instead of resuming the download, AppStore showed an error message (failed to download or something like that), than it stopped responding and the computer shut off again. When I turned it on again, under the apple logo and the loading indicator, there was a progress bar. I didn't know what it was doing and for some reason I held the power button until it shut down again. Now when I try to turn my Mac on, it shows this
Progress bar, than it disappears without finishing whatever it was doing, and then the computer shuts off again.
I tried to boot pressing Cmd+R;
selecting recovery mode after holding option;
Holding power pressed for some seconds;
And by "restart on OSX" on windows 7 (I have bootcamp, I can see the OSX files from there if needed)
There is no DVD inside the Mac and no USBs or any other cables plugged on the computer
I removed the RAM I installed today, I'm right now using only the original RAM but the problem
persists. I have no idea what else to do, any suggestions?

If you were able to boot from the d key to the Hardware Test (for a G5, this should have been from the second disc -- but you don't mention how you got to the AHT) that rules out a bad optical drive or firmware password. The only thing, then, that comes to mind is a damaged install disc, disc one.

  • I can't get my mac to boot off the install discs

I'm trying to boot off of the install disc, but I can't get the computer to even see it. I've tried the c, d and options keys. I've repaired permissions. I don't seem to have a firmware password. When I hold down d it tests and finds no problems with the hardware. When I hold down c it goes straight to the hard drive. When I hold down the option key during restart the only option it gives me is the hard drive - no disc. I've tried two different keyboards, one of which is a mac. I'm using disc 1 of the two disc set to install mac os x that came with the computer when I bought it. I've also tried disc 2 (since I've been trying everything I can think of.)
I'm out of ideas. Help appreciated.

  • I've overwritten my Mac OS with Windows Vista, how can I get my Mac OS back

I Was downloading a Windows Vista OS on my Mac and I accidentally deleted the Mac OS. How can I get my Mac OS back? Can I use the CD's accompanied with my MAC
when I put the DVD to Install the MAC system from vista...It doesnt give an option for ordinary installtion but it gives me an option for remote installtion (which it needs an network or internet connection or something like that...) what should i do ??
    :(:(

You need to repartition the drive. While booted from the DVD, select Utilities > Disk Utility from the menu bar. In Disk Utility, select the boot drive from the list on the left. It will have a long name starting with the capacity in GB. Click on the Partition tab. Choose "1 Partition" as the volume scheme. Click on the Options button near the bottom of the window, then click on the button labeled "GUID Partition Table." Finally, click Apply. When the partition finishes, you can quit Disk Utility and go back to the Installer. You should now see your internal drive as available for installation.

  • How can i get mynew mac mini to use the drive in my old mac pro

When I first got my new mac mini it dosen't have an internal drive.   So I hooked it up on the network and fire wire.  I could use the superdrive in the mac pro just fine  both itunes and the dvd player worked as they would with a internal drive.   But now a couple of upgrade down loads later not so much.  yes I can connect with screen share and can get the dvd player to play dvd's but still can't get itunes to use the superdrive.  Iht exect disk icon in the apple menue bar use to open and close the super drive but now it reads "no disk" How can I get my mac mini to automaticly use the superdrive when i turn on the mac pro.
I've done all the easy things changing the order of start up and share settings and i sware it did work ok when i first hooked it up.

Mind you, booting off the external optical drive of another computer may not be practical because of the different operating system limitations of the computers.   I would just purchase an external optical drive from http://www.macsales.com/ if you find it doesn't work.

  • Download backfired, how can I get my Mac back to normal?

I wanted to stop the chime at startup so I checked the topics here and downloaded Startup Sound PrefPane from Arcana labs. ( http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/2721/osx_disable_mac_startupsound/?dsq=15515091#comment-15515091)
It did not disable the startup chime and something funny happened to my Mac.
Now when I turn it on first there is a flashing globe for about 5 minutes. Next there is a folder with an alternating question mark and Finder face flashing for the next 5 minutes. Then the apple appears, it chimes, and boots up.
How can I just go back to the way things were and get my Mac to boot up properly? Please help.

I just checked and the dmg with the program contains an uninstaller. run the uninstaller to remove it. also, I suggest you reset PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
and reset your startup disk in system preferences->startup disk.

  • HELP I can't get macbook air to boot!!

Help!! I am traveling around the world right now and I can't get my MBA to boot up.  I shut it down by selecting shut down, after closing all windows.  A few hours later went to turn it on and nothing!  I am so frustrated! When I press the start button I get the chime, but the screen doesn't light up.   I can feel something whirring, and the logo on the back lights up but that is it.  I have tried repeatedly starting it and turning it off, nothing. Have tried holding the alt button and the start button at the same time, nothing.
I am getting on a plane in the morning and going to Nicaragua so I can't call Apple nor can I go to a service center.  Right now it is 7:45 PM in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and the computer service centers are closed.
I purchased the MBA in January of 2014 so it is less than 1 year old.  I purchased extended warranty recently.  I have the latest OS system installed, I have no USB sticks to start from.  All I have is the MBA.  Slapping it doesn't help Neither does yelling at it .  Any suggestions as to what I can do? This is the first time this has happened. I haven't dropped the computer.
    Thanks so much!

The easiest thing to do is to reset the SMC:
Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. The power adapter indicator light may cycle off / on once.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • TS2530 When I put a burned cd from one Mac into another Mac, song titles do not show up! I have to enter them manually! My CD player reads the titles that i on the cd; how can I get my Mac to do so?

When I put a burned cd from one Mac into another Mac, song titles do not show up! I have to enter them manually! My CD player reads the titles that i on the cd; how can I get my Mac to do so?

The problem is that I burned these CD's myself from music that I added from my personal collection to iTunes. The INFO is ON the CD's (it appears perfectly when I put the CD in my Numark mixer...so I know the info is on the CD), but for some reason, my MAC PRO will NOT read the info on the burned CD when I place the CD into the MAC PRO. The CD was burned on a MAC that I no longer own. But there HAS to be a way to transfer songs from a burned CD with the INFO that is on the CD burned with iTunes.
    PLEASE HELP!

  • I have multiple emails associated with my i phone, but can't get my mac to associate some of the email names because it is associated with other apple id , but it's my id. how can i get around this?

I have multiple emails associated with my i phone, but can't get my mac to associate some of the email names because it is associated with other apple id , but it's my id. how can i get around this?

    - Try contacting iTunes for the password problem:
Apple - Support - iTunes - Contact Us
    - For the other problem you can try a reset. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - The next standard thing to do is to download/install a new app but you cant 'do that.
    - Instead, try restoring from backup.

Gotta say thank you — again.  Sorry the posts were spread out over more than one location.    I'll check and see if Third Party Software is considered a "peripheral", maybe that would have been a better single thread choice?
Definitely news we can use and the reference link is appreciated.
OT ~ We keep becoming more and more aware of how easy it is to lose one's bearings when it comes to keeping up with info tech.  My husband and I are both official members of the geezer set and have been out of the work force for some years.  You really do pick up so much just by being in the environment where people are using things to get work done.  A couple of old MP3 players, PPC G5, and a vintage Inspiron 3800 that someone didn't want any more is about it.  No cell phone, no iPod, no iPad, no home wireless network, no streaming media.  Fixed income.  So we do with what we can as long as we can.  If we could get by without that Intel processor, we'd probably make do with what we've got.  On the other hand, we've really wanted a notebook for a very long time and have to admit that needing to upgrade to accomodate my husband's project is pretty much just the "reason" we need.  I really mean it when I say that we are beyond appreciative that users take the time to share info and patiently educate those of us who fall into the "slow tech" category.

  • How can I get the MAC address of my Apple TV?

How can I get the MAC address of my Apple TV? I currently do not have an HDMI device to connect it to, and the MAC is not listed on the box or the Apple TV itself.
(to answer the obvious, I am trying to pair it with an iPad, and I need to register the Apple TV for the network so the two can see each other)

As long as I know java doesn't have support to work on link-layer, only internet and transport layers. You may write simple native code. On windows, IP Helper functions, like SendARP allow you to pass an IP address and get the hardware address. You store the hardware address on your database/file and later, when that machine is off, you send a frame to the address you stored previous.

I haven't seen it on Linux, but if you need help let me know I'll check the Linux API's too.

The first step in Upgrading... is to Snow Leopard = OS X 10.6.x
It is Not available as a download... It is a Paid Upgrade.
    Do this first...
Check that your Mac meets the System Requirements for Snow Leopard...
Snow Leopard Tech Specs  >  http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
If so... Purchase a Snow Leopard Install Disc...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
After the Successful Install, run Software Update to get the latest updates for Snow Leopard and iTunes.
Be sure to make a Backup of your Current System Before Upgrading...

Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:
Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.)
Open Office (Office 2007-like suite compatible with OS X.)
    NeoOffice (similar to Open Office.)
LibreOffice (a new direction for the Open Office suite.)
