Can't get optical audio to work

I know this might be an issue with my A/V receiver, but I'm really stuck and frustrated and hoping someone can help. I've got the Apple TV connected direct to the TV since the receiver (A Denon AVR-688) doesn't support audio playback through to the speakers (or does it? can't get it to anyway). The optical audio I have connected to the optical port on the receiver so I can hear sound through the stereo. The port is labelled "CD" but my audio input source to CD, I get no sound through the stereo (just what's coming through to the TV via the direct HDMI connection). I must be setting something wrong. Can anyone help me?

I only see an option to set the "input" source (not output), which I have selected as CD as I have no CD player, and it's the default setting anyway. Regardless, I'm sure I've got something set up wrong just can't figure out what it is. Ugh!

I had the same problem, try this:
In your home directory, go to Library/Caches/
(make sure you are in the library in your home directory, not the library at the root level of the hard disk).
and remove this file: com.apple.audiounits.cache
You can drag it to your desktop if you like or throw it away.
Then relaunch garage band, it will rescan all audio units.
If you have the Kontakt audio unit installed in YourHardDiskName/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components it should recognize it and include it in your list. You can toss that cache file any time you want Garage Band to rescan your audio units.
I had a problem with Kontakt on an upgrade that broke it, GarageBand saw it and put Kontakt on its list of broken Audio Units, it would never load it after that... after a new rescan, it was fine.

Can't get any audio "changers" working

Hello, I have HP Pavilion 2250so, and I can't get any audio changer or like that working. I can't get Dolby Advanced Audio working and the IDT Audio which is already on my computer doesn't work, evey time I try to start that, it says -"IDT PC Audio has stopped working. I don't mean that I don't have sound in my computer, no I have but I can't get those audio programs working which are like equalizer in Windows Media Player 11 that you can add bass boost and stuff. Any help?

Cannot get optical audio in working

Hi all,
I have a new MacBook Pro (latest 2010 version) which I specifically bought for audio recording/editing purposes.
However, I cannot get it to work at all, recording is useless except for a normal 3.5mm stereo-in jack. I cannot get the MacBook Pro to record either through optical audio in (my preferred solution) or through my EMU0404 USB soundcard. I basically have a £1,000 brick with a light in the shape of an Apple on the outside and, as it's my first Apple computer, I'm struggling to fix the issue (and struggling to avoid calling it all kinds of names on this forum!)
Any help would be appreciated. I've tried changing the settings in the MIDI setup under utilities, but it's just not recognising the input. Whenever I plug the optical cable in, the Sound preferences screen automatically defaults it to 'Digital Out' and won't allow me to select anything other than the onboard mic as the input source.

Do you by any chance have the 13 inch MacBook Pro? This has only one 3.5mm jack, switchable between input and output; but there is no optical input, only output. Inserting an optical cable into this jack will cause the socket to default to output only (since it knows you want optical and there is no optical input), leaving the internal mic as the only possible input.
The EMU soundcard claims to use CoreAudio and so should work without drivers and appear as an option in Sound>input. Are you trying to use an unsupported sampling rate? - their tech spacs page says 'Macintosh analog operation up to 96kHz and digital operation up to 48kHz only at this time.' If you still can't get any sense out of it, it would be worth approaching the manufacturer.

Can't get the Audio to work

I'm putting together a piece for school but can't seem to get the imported audio to work. I purchased some songs off of iTunes and imported them into Final Cut, but there is no audio when I play the film. There aren't even any audio waves on the timeline or viewer box. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this? I need it ASAP! Thanks.

Sorry - by purchasing the music on iTunes you don't have the rights to actually use them in a video.
The DRM will keep you from doing so inside FCP.

When I connect my Apple TV to a computer monitor there is video but no audio. How can I get the audio to work?

The headphone jack on the monitor doesn't seen to work with the Apple TV either.

What type of connection are you using on your monitoe, if DVI, DVI doesn't carry audio, you will need to use the optical connection for audio.

How can I get the audio to work again?

I have no audio output (external or internal) on my computer. When I click on the speaker is is in gray. When I go to sound in network preferences and go to output it only lists digital output/built-in output and is says the selected device has no output controls. There are no other choices than this. The input sound is working but not the output on the internal speaker or through the jack. Please help.

My computer is not under warranty and it's over 4 hours to a mac store. I did the paperclip thing very lightly as I did feel uncomfortable doing this.
So what did you do or did support do to resolve your issue? I do appreciate you taking the time to try to help. Hopefully you can help me.

Help getting streaming audio to work?

I am a new user to Mac OS as of a few weeks ago. I'm making the transition fairly well.
Using Safari, I can't get streaming audio to work on my hometown radio show.
Here's the link to the home page... http://www.kdkaradio.com/ Near the top right of the page is a button to listen live.
I read somewhere that you have to have Windows Media Player installed and I did that and it still doesn't work. I thought you might need a plugin with Firefox and I can't get it to work either.

To your question:
Windows Media Player does not play natively on Intel
machines. You need to use the free
Flip4Mac plug-in as a
substitute for WMP. Microsoft has stated they do not
plan to create a Universal Binary app. for the
Windows Media Player.
On my machine:
No go on Safari. When I select "live" I get to the
page showing a template of a music player, but no
sound.
On Firefox, a separate sound panel opens, however,
the feed stops before sound occurs. Strange though,
the various highlight feeds do play with no problem.
I suggest you contact the web developer at the
station for clarification regarding the Mac
platform, and just what is compatible with their
content stream.
I'm using Flip4Mac in place of WMP.

I am still getting the same error, page not found when trying to listen live. All the other feeds work fine. I emailed the radio station to see if they could resolve the problem.

Will not work. To my knowledge, dual converting like that isn't supported. The Mac must detect the connected video output device and that sort of info cannot be done across an analog component uni-directional connection.

Hi Gary - thanks so much for your help. I'd already done that, but finally stumbled across the answer for my situation. I'm new to iMac and this is the first time I used Keynote, so maybe this info will help someone else along the way - I still haven't found this in any of the Keynote documentation or forums I've read.
My slides were all set up with at least one text box in which the text was animated. The sound was the last thing I added to each slide, exactly following the info in Keynote Help re: adding audio. The audio would work when I tested it in Inspector mode, and also if I switched to soundtrack instead. But not if sound was added to each individual slide. Hmmm. After I submitted the question above, I was running through the (auto) slide show one final time to check text, animation, etc. when I noticed that on just one single slide the sound effect came through, but at the very tail end of the slide. Hmm again. Why?
Through trial & error, the answer was in the animation section - not very intuitive re: audio. The steps to correct the issue were: 1) click on the sound icon embedded in each slide, 2) click on the animation tab in Inspector. 3) There's a drop-down menu there that allows you to reposition the audio clip to the #1 spot (if it was added after other "animation"). This allows the sound to begin before the text animation begins on each slide. Before doing this, I guess the sound was in there but the slides were transitioning before it had a chance to play.
Since this is the first time I've used Keynote and it's the most recent version, I'm not sure if this is a new feature to allow users to choose where within a slide to play a sound effect, but I'm guessing that might be why was unable to find any info on how to solve it. Hopefully this will help others who get stumped.

I can't get any audio recording to work in Logic X.

I got a new Imac, an Apogee duet and Logic X.
I just got Logic X and I really love everything about it accept I can't record any audio recordings on it.
I can use my old Logic and garageband files and play around and mix them with no problem. The midi works fine as well coming trhoug my headphones and monitors.
Somehow I can't get the Audio to be heard or recorded. Which is a real bummer since I got only 6 songs left on my new album and it is an acoustic album. I bought Logic so I could master the first 5 and the record the last 6. But I'm stuck with garageband at the moment. Because that actually can record the audio throug my duett with no problem. Then I open the songs up in Logic and master and mix them..
Ay ideas?

If you can record and hear audio in Garageband, it must be down to something in Logic - have you checked the Audio tab in Logic's Preferences and selected your Duet as Output and Input device ?

HT1386 I have an app called ipieta which was originally downloaded onto an ipod. I gave the ipod to someone else, but now that I've had the iphone I can not get the audio even though it is downloaded into itunes music like it said to do. It won't work.

Sorry. There's nothing anyone can do. The current version of the facebook app will not run on 4.2.1. The iPhone 3G won't run anything higher than 4.2.1. You're stuck.

Help... I can not get my microphone to work

Help.... I can NOT get my microphone to work with my Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Professional card. When I plug it in and test it (in either Configure Speech Recoginition - Windows Vista / or in Counter-Strike Source, Test Microphone Button under the game options) both indicate that the system is not receiving any sound. However, both the speakers (5.1) and headphones work fine. I am using a Plantronics headset.
I am not sure what I am doing wrong. Below are my complete system specifications. Let me know what additional information you need, if any.

The installer is placing the entire SSL LMC-1 component folder in my component folder (library>audio>plugins>components). Logic's AU Manager is seeing nothing regardless of rescans. Thanks.

I had this plugin. It is NOT Universal Binary, and as such is NOT compatibel with Intel machines.

How do I get my audio to work on PE4?

I have a new computer and PE 4 was installed on it, but I can't hear any audio. I can't hear in my imported clips, audio files or on my timeline. Anyone know how to get the audio to work?

First, do you hear Audio in other programs on the computer?
If so, head on down this reply. If not, then you will want to make sure that your Audio settings in the OS, and possibly the Audio card's console are set correctly first.
If you do have Audio elsewhere, look on the Toolbar at the top of PE, and click on Edit. There, go to Preferences>Audio Hardware.and choose ASIO Settings. This will bring up a dialog box and you will need to place checkmarks in your Audio cards DirectSound Output Port list and Input Port list.
In Sync Reference, DirectSound Input's radio button should be set (right-hand side of box), and for Card Options, Full Duplex checked.
While you're there, check as to what your Audio card is, in case we need to troubleshoot more. It also pays to get the latest driver (these can change weekly) for your particular card.
