Can't get past Log-In window--Safe Boot

I'll try and keep this easy/short: My iMac g-5(first Gen i-sight), when upon startup, the wheel would just spin and then the fans would blow turbo while stuck on the spinning wheel. Was running on Tiger but was able to salvage the h/d and all on it, no damage to it. So we erased all on my iMac and tried booting from disc. No good. Tried starting from another laptop; No good. Then cloned from working Leopard laptop, did basic install and got to the Log-in widow--in Safe Boot mode and cannot get past the Log-in window. I get a dialogue box w/an applications icon that says, " You are unable to log in to the user account "..." at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred." I hit okay and the dialogue box shakes a frustrating no at me.
What do I do now?
Any ideas? Thanx to all.

Try an Archive and Install now, it will put a fresh copy of the OS but keep, your data and preferences. Cloning from a different system is not a very good idea, you run into the problems you have, and probably other ones as well.
If the A&I doesn't work, you may have to wipe your drive and perform a clean install of Leopard.

  • Can not get past log on screen

I am having trouble logging on to our macbook when it boots up a window comes up log in unsuccessful error has occured. I have tried starting up in safe mode and resetting power management.
    Help please???

Thanks, Andrew for your help.  Not sure if you will see this, but I did the above and it said the HD was okay.  Rebooted it and still won't go past login page.  Tried it again and this time typed in the line /sbin/fsck -fy and then it came up and said HD was okay, but said something about being modified.  I once more rebooted, but it still won't get past the login screen.  Besides taking long to reboot, as before, I am able to enter my password, but then it hangs up with the rainbow icon rotating continuously.  Does this mean that the disk is corrupt or partially so, and if so, can you advise how I should proceed?  TIA again.

  • Can't get past the tutorial window

I just updated to iTunes 9.1. Now when I click on the Music library, all I get is a window directing me to some tutorials. How do I get rid of this stupid window and get my music back?

    Try this:
Hold “Option” at boot and select the “Recovery HD” disk at the boot menu
Select “Mac OS X Utilities” in the top Menu bar.
Click on the “Utilities” menu and select “Terminal”
    Type the following: resetpassword
in the next window you need to select your MacintoshHD and then select an new password, if you are done hit Save!
    - Hope this works!

  • Can't get past log in screen

I am the admin of three additional users. The three users can log in. However when I log in to my account it appears to accept password, goes to blue screen, and then back to login screen. How do I resolve this problem ?

If you can log in from another administrator account account, open the Terminal application in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and enter the following:
    sudo sh
    cd /Users/username/Library/Preferences/
    mv loginwindow.plist loginwindow.old
    mv com.apple.loginwindow.plist com.apple.loginwindow.old
    exit
Try logging in from your account again; if it still doesn't work, use the following:
    sudo sh
    cd /Users/username/Library/
    mv Preferences/ PreferencesOld/
    exit
In each case, replace username with the short name of your admin account; if you've moved your home folder, insert its current path where prompted. If you can't log into an administrator account, restart your computer with the Command and S keys held down; perform the same procedure but replace 'sudo sh' with 'mount -uw /' without any quote marks.

  • HELP! Can't get past the blue screen when booting up...

    Hi,
Please can anyone help. I've searched the web and found possible causes of the fault but not a solution....
I upgraded my hardrive, used SuperDuper! to clone my drive, make it bootable etc then transferred the new drive to my Macbook Pro.
Now, every time a boot it up with my account set to auto login, it freezes on the blue screen. It doesn't go any further.
I've entered in Safemode, added a second 'Admin' account and set the login preferences to show the login window. Which allows me to log in as the second account holder. This works in normal mode, and then once logged in, i can switch accounts to my normal account.
This is the only way i can use my account.
I've looked at the fonts and used 'Font Doctor' to fix them. I can't seem to be able to fix my preferences (com.apple.programename.com), Onyx doesn't seem to fix it and i've no way of finding out if a preference file is causing this myself.
I've also done an OSX reinstall then software update. No good!
I've tried so many things as advised by various people online but it's clear to me that it's a) Account issue, b)Startup issue once logged in.
Please can anyone advise? I'm assuming that it's only related to my account, and that it's to do with the startup of the account...
    I have OS X 10.6.8 on a macbook pro unibodied (1st gen, Aug 2008).

Thanks. However, i found a lot of errors so i chose not to act on what i didn't know.
This is how i managed to work it:
    Activate ROOT user
    Login as ROOT
Update to latest OSX 10.6 (was just released)
    Restarted
Logged in as main user... worked fine. Not sure what i did but it worked.
I had tried all other methods but non worked...

On the page where you enter username and password after entering and pressing "Log in" the page just stays in place. If you look at the error log you see
"Warning: Unknown property 'border-radius'. Declaration dropped.

    Hello,
I recommend you contact AT&T's dedicated BB Support staff (call their front line, request escalation to BB Support) and have them check to be sure that your account with them is correctly configured for this device. Sometimes when switching devices things don't fully automatically move behind the scenes, and only they (ATT) can validate that.

  • Can't get past OCX error when installing ODAC 11g on Windows Server 2003

I have been trying to install ODAC 11g on Windows Server 2003 and can't get past the OCX error when registering oravsdbgeng11w.dll. I've read every message on this forum even remotely related to this problem and tried every solution offered. I have done a clean install into a new Oracle home, and made sure Instant Client is always included. All service packs and automatic updates have been installed. For what it's worth I have successfully installed ODAC 11g on Windows XP Pro.
If anyone out there has been able to get this up and running and would care to share the wisdom that would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Michael, as you already noticed, every time I have seen this issue it has been because ODT was being installed into an Oracle home where no client exists, or perhaps installed into an old oracle home where the client was an old version (eg Oracle10), or the client was broken. Usually though, the user unchecked the instant client checkbox during the ODAC install.
So you say you checked instant client and you still got the error? That doesn't add up...
Are you using 32-bit windows? If you are using 64 bit windows be sure to tell us.
Why don't you try avoiding using instant client at all, in case it is somehow not getting installed properly.
You can do this as follows:
    1) Under the download links on OTN, go to the database download page.
    2) Download the Oracle Database client 11g for Microsoft Windows
    3) Run this installer and Install ODP.NET 1.x and 2.x into a new Oracle home from this client install, but nothing else. If ODP.NET is not listed there (it has been a long time since I looked at that) than just install a minimal Oracle client install.
    4) Close the installer
    5) Go back and install ODAC and this time choose "Oracle Server" radio button during the install (rather than the client install)
    6) Install ODT and ODP.NET at least and be sure they are being installed into the Oracle home created in the first steps above.
This will avoid use of Instant Client and will hopefully avoid the OCX error. Let me know if this solves your problem.
