Can't install ios 4.3.5 update

I have an iphone 4 running ios 4.1
When I try to download and update to 4.3.5, the download goes all the way across and then gives me an error message about timing out....I have tried multiple times over several weeks but still the same thing. What can I do to download and install the update outside of itunes, since that is where I am having the problem?

This question is asked and answered multiple times daily. Forum etiquette suggest you search forums before posting a topic that has been posted before.
I suggest you type "connection timed out" in the search box at the top of the page, or look at the "more like this" box to the right to find your answer.

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.0.1. For the iPad Mini the iOS is 6.0.2. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily. Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.

How can I install iOS 6 on an iPad 1. It is currently running iOS 5 and when I follow the directions at Apple for updating ( connect to computer, open iTunes, on summary page click software update) it just says iOS 5 is updated to current version. Does anybody know if an Pad 1 will run iOS 6? And if it will, what do I need to do. Thanks

Check out the other ios 5.1 installation error posts, using search terms like "can't install ios 5.1." I found one that helped me. There are several fixes that appear to work, such as changing your DNS #'s on your device, rebooting your device and trying again, and so on. Personally, I have the same device as you and I restarted the device. Then I installed 5.1 from the device. It didn't work from my Mac previously, but it worked from the device. I did have to download it first on the Mac, but once downloaded you have the choice to install from your device as well (if you have home sharing turned on between your Mac and iPod). I had a "1" under updates on my iPod (which was for the firmware update). I just chose to update from the iPod and it worked.
If you don't know how to do a reboot of your iPod, just hold the power and home buttons in until you see the Apple logo. Then you can let go and wait till it reboots.

. As Apple said in June, iOS 7 is not compatible with the 4G iPod.
All the iOS devices compatible (iPhone 4 and later, iPad 2 and later, and 5G iPod touch) with iOS 7 have at least 512 MB of memory (RAM). The 4G iPod only has 256 MB

How much space is it saying that you require - I thought that on mine it said 6.7, but I wasn't paying that much attention. You could try deleting something else e.g. if you have any films or TV shows downloaded then you could copy them over to your computer's iTunes library and delete them from your iPad.

Same issues on several iPads. Looks like it's not just me, looking at social media reports.
I have removed more apps and data again and again. Every time I have to wait 15-20 minutes downloading the installer and every time it stops with no information on how much space it needs.

The problem was cured by going to <user>/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup and moving the files from that folder to desktop and the ipad backed up and the software installed
