Can't Join CD Track?

I've been able to select and Join CD tracks for years and suddenly the "join CD tracks" menu option in the advance menu is not available for use. It is gray and will not allow me to select it so I can't join tracks. Any ideas? Thanks, MJ

Like others I have being loading audio books where each track is joined to form one but in the last few days this problem arose.
What puzzled me was that having brought 4 books home from the library I was able to properly open the first book and process it as usual. This now sits in the system correctly identified and joined up. When I attempted to load the 2nd book it was possible to load the first 2 cds but on attempting to process the 3rd. the join tracks was greyed out. No matter what I tried it was not possible to load that cd or any subsequent ones. Books 3 and four suffered the same fate.
Today I returned the books and collected a further 2 in an attempt to see if it was a problem with the original cds. This time the first book would automatically import the first track despite the preferences being set as Show CD. Again the option to join tracks was greyed out.
Strangely enough the 2nd book when it was opened it immediately displayed all the tracks being joined and gave the full details of the book and I was able to immediately load this OK
What worked properly before does not do so now.
Can anyone offer a solution to the problem?

when I want to import a CD with multiple tracks.  I select the tracks, and then the option to 'join tracks' is not shown under the options icon.  how can I join tracks?

You can only join adjacent tracks and they have to be in the correct track order. Look at the screenshots below:
Image 1. Only one track selected - so Join CD Tracks is not shown:
Image 2. Tracks 1 & 2 selected, so Join CD Tracks is available:
Image 3. Although tracks 1 & 2 are selected, the track list is in reverse order, so Join CD Tracks is not available:

  • Can't join purchased tracks

I know how to join tracks imported from a CD, but I want to join tracks purchased from the Music Store and can't do it. How do I join purchased tracks?

    Hi there,
I did some searching here in the forums about this, and I think i found an answer that would be useful to you. I apologize to the original poster, as I am not going to cite his name, but here is what he said:
"The process of compression to MP3 or AAC adds a blank space to the beginning or end of the file itself. This is sometimes called "encoder gap". If this encoder gap is not accounted for, then combining two compressed files together (even if they're at the same bitrate and such) will still leave a tiny audible gap in the file.
iTunes does not have any support for true gapless playback, and so it would be unable to correct for that encoder gap. Even if it did understand gapless, combining the streams like that is problematic for many other reasons. The only real way to do it is to re-encode them both, which causes a quality loss, so it's a bad idea to begin with.
Whereas joining CD tracks is mainly a matter of ripping them together into one track, which is easy because a "track" is just a marker, it's not an actual change in the datastream.
Suffice it to say that there are technical reasons behind it, and the overriding reason is iTunes lack of proper gapless support."
There, that seems pretty comprehensive to me. I hope this helps.

  • How can I 'join' audio tracks when importing audio book?

    HELP!!
In the latest version of iTunes, 11.0.1, I can't find the 'JOIN Tracks' button which is needed when importing an audio CD to keep each disc treated as one book instead of storing each chapter as a separte entry.  Without this, I can't find a way to keep the chapters to play in proper order as each CD, starts with chapter 01.
    Thank you for your help

    Join CD tracks
When you import songs from a CD into iTunes, you can group songs so they always play together (even when you’re shuffling songs).
Insert an audio CD into your computer’s CD or DVD drive, and click No in the window that appears.
When the songs on the CD appear in the iTunes window, hold down the Shift key to select the ones you want to join.
Click near the top-right of the iTunes window, and choose Join CD Tracks.

  • Can't join CD tracks - no, not the usual problem

    Help,
This is NOT the problem where the tracks are out of order so the Join CD Tracks is grayed out. It's a different problem.
I load audiobook CDs to play on my iPod - have been doing it for years.
I join the tracks so that each CD is only one entry in iTunes.
As of the last few days, when I try to join CD tracks, it says it's joining hundreds of tracks, and when I drag the joined tracks to my itunes folder it just chimes and refuses to copy.
In the past, the little drag icon would list the number of joined tracks (like 12), now it shows a number like 283. And it won't copy. I did a software update recently. Has something changed to this feature?
    OSX 10.6.6
    iTunes 10.2.1 (1)

Rebooted all macs to run off iTunes 9, a much better version of iTunes, and wouldn't you know, join tracks works just fine.  Reinstalled 10.2 onto one of the computers and still get same software problem of joined tracks not importing.  If you join the tracks in the middle of an album, and then import the entire album, only the tracks that fall after the joined tracks import and nothing else.
I suggest having a working version of iTunes like 9 on your computer for the joined tracks feature.  I only use 10.2 now for uploading to ipad since apple is forcing paying customers to use that version for the ipad and other players because older more stable versions of itunes don't work with the new hardware.  Choice is something that is disappearing with apple products.  It's a shame.

  • How can I join 24bit tracks without ripping from CD?

I've begun to upgrade my library to 24 bit audio, and many of the albums I want to upgrade have tracks which should be "joined." But if I buy, say, Pink Floyd's  Dark Side Of The Moon from HDTracks, and want to have each side play as one continuous track, I have to burn it to CD first, then rip it. Which reduces the audio back to 16 bit. I wish iTunes would start selling albums in 24 bit ALAC, but that's another issue. Does anyone know a way to join 24 tracks without burning to CD and ripping?
    Thanks!

    Hi Mark,
Up to you, of course, but as audio editing tasks go, stringing a few tracks end-to-end is relatively simple.
The other option is just to put the relevant tracks in a playlist in the desired order, make sure Crossfade is set to 0, and play them in a row.  Try it and see whether the transitions come across as "good enough."

  • How can I Join song?

I want to create a slide show and not have the music loop. How can i join multiple track so they appear as one and then put it in my slide show?

You use "Join CD Tracks" from the Advanced menu when you are importing. The function doesn't work after the tracks have been imported: Adding Songs from CDs to your Library
If want to edit and splice tracks together you can download the free open source program Audacity which has Linux, Mac and Windows versions at this link: Audacity

  • Can't "Join Tracks" Again

My computer has OS 10.8.5 and i Tunes 11.1.5 (5).
I downloaded 4 audio books this last month and joined tracks on all.  Today the join tracks feature is GONE.  I have to download a book with 17 discs and at least 10 tracks per disc, 170 tracks give or take a few so that ˆcan convert to MP3 to shrink the volume. This afternoon I downloaded the iTunes 11.1.5 (5) to try to fix the issue, no luck.  I'm wondering if there is a limited number of times this feature can be used and then it goes away.  The last time this happened join tracks was gone for at least 2 years.  It gets frusturating when it doesn't work.  Think Genius Bar could help?

How can I merge 2 tracks into one track with iTunes 11?

Thanks for your reply, Jim.  I imported a CD that I had burned previously with the 2 tracks of sound effects that I had downloaded from the internet (MP3 files), but I did not see an option to join the tracks when I imported the CD.  In the upper right corner there were three buttons: Options, CD Info, and Import CD.  When I click on Options, the drop-down menu has two choices: "Get Track Names"  and "Submit CD Track Names".   I cannot find an option to Join Tracks.  Help!

I have always imported my cds (including books) into iTunes using one step called "join cd tracks" which is under the "Advanced" menu. Never a problem. But today I was importing a 10 disc book and on the 7th disc all of a sudden the choice to join cd tracks was greyed out. I have tried it with other discs. No luck. How can I get to this option again. I was not doing anything different so don't know what took away this choice. Can anyone help me?

Thought it had worked but soon found out it had not.
after further days of trying finally, solved it for me Yesterday.
turned off notifications when locked, and bingo, wow.
i have not turned off iCloud but location services are also off.
best thing to do I found was keep checking your usage, settings, general, usage, and flip down to bottom, if the standby and usage are similar there is a problem, if there is a big difference then all is ok. Just keep turning things off and on until the difference is very apparent.
something on my phone was keeping the phone alive even when turned off, and I think this was the phone repeatedly trying to update continually.
to me this is definitely down to the iOS, my wife has exactly same phone and iOS but hers doesn't have any problem and the battery lasts for days.
the guy at the Genius Bar told me to restore the phone via iTunes, not iCloud. This is because iCloud remembers the exact info from your phone and simply reinstates it when you restore, and this includes the iOS too.
when I get home from holidays that's what I'll do, or wait for iOS 8 in few weeks. But I'm so pleased I finally made it work, I was beginning to think ditch the phone and buy Samsung.
anyway anyone out there please try my final solution and let me know if it works for you?

  • Join CD Tracks

Has this function disappeared from iTunes 11, or is it just hiding?  I find it incredibly useful for live albums and if it's gone it's really a big loss.  Thanks for any and all help.

    Stacy,
That all sounds as though it's correct. The only three four things I can think of at this time (assuming you've followed the points I've made in both my previous posts) are:
The track numbers you see are the iTunes list numbers in the left hand column, aren't they? They're not numbers in the track titles are they?
As you will see in my two screenshots below, if the numbered column is in reverse order, the Join CD Tracks isn't visible. So even though you have that column in correct "front" order, try a reversal to see if it makes any difference. (I don't expect it to!)
    Note the difference:
    Any luck? If not;
         3. Try selecting just the first two tracks. Does the Join CD Tracks appear? If it does, try selecting the first three songs and check to see if the Join CD Tracks still appears. Do this until you find the song that's preventing you from joining all the tracks.
         4. Perhaps the combined track titles make the filename too long. When tracks are joined, they acquire the filename of all the tracks, separated (I believe) by an underscore. If you think this might be the problem, try shortening the track names before joining them. Find the first track to tip this over the balance, and then shorten both its title and the song prior to that one. If that works and you can then join those songs, that's the fix. Try it only as a last resort.

  • Join cd tracks-greyed out

I have searched this topic but the solutions don't seem to work or make sense. I have added 2 tracks to iTunes yesterday. They are random, but I labled them track 1 of 2 and track 2 of 2 so that I could join them. I don't see the sort by track in the very left. Name is first and I can move the track column to the right of name. I have then searched in a way that only brought up these two new tracks. I then clicked the tracks colum so that they were sorted 1 and then 2, highlighted both but still greyed out. I have tried this in AAC format (but didn't see anyone say you needed to do it in mp3).
Any help is much appreciated. I am using latest iTUnes on Snowleopard.

Join CD tracks is only active when you have a CD loaded and before you import the songs from the CD to your library: Adding Content to iTunes
If you've already imported the tracks it doesn't work. Put the CD back in and join the tracks prior to importing them. You can also have a look at Doug's iTunes scripts for this script which will join tracks after they've been imported Note: This script allows you to join any two (or more) MP3 tracks (it doesn't join other formats), provided that they are the same format and bit rate: Track Splicer
Doug also has this shareware program you might find useful (this will join AAC tracks as long as they are not ITunes Store copy protected versions): Join Together

  • Please help! Problem Joining CD Tracks

    Hello,
Thank you for taking the time to look at my question, I hope that someone can answer it!
I have been using the Join CD Tracks feature for a while now when I import CDs. Recently, however, I can no longer choose this option. When I select the tracks and go to the Advanced tab, Join CD Tracks is grayed-out and unselectable. What's up with this??
    Any ideas?
    Thank you for your help!!

Thank you so much! Yes, the trick is to select the first row before selecting the track numbers. So simple, but I missed it. I really appreciate you help!
