Which keyboard layout you were using? German, French ... I suppose your layout is reset to the default: US and you are unable to find the "?" or "/" ...
Please have a look into the keyboard viewer, to see how the layout of your keyboard is actually.

Ok 1st one. The warning restriction message relates to this line in main.cf:
    smtpd_helo_restrictions = permit_sasl_authenticated  permit_mynetworks  check_helo_access hash:/etc/postfix/helo_access  reject_non_fqdn_hostname  reject_invalid_hostname  permit reject_invalid_helo_hostname
The last reject occurs after the single word "permit" and is ignored.
    However, that's not the problem.
I'm not exactly sure what's happening, but this might be a clue.
It would appear that either postfix is not being able to create the socket for private/policy or it's somehow created with the wrong permissions.  You might need to ramp up the debug level to get a better idea.
You could check if it's being created by "netstat -a | grep private/policy" in terminal.
My guess is that it's not being created because there is no setup statement in your master.cf file, but I don't understand why postfix would be looking for it if it isn't set up.  Private/policy I think relates to grey listing.  Maybe gives you a hint.

  • Why can't brand new MacBookPro9,1 (OEM Mountain-Lion) boot from Snow Leopard on external drive, or internal partition?

Why can't brand new MacBookPro9,1 (OEM Mountain-Lion) boot from Snow Leopard on external drive, or internal partition?
Is this because of hardware changes? Or firmware changes? Or is it just and Apple Inc. administrative fiat?

@Steve Holton: Sorry Steve, but you're wrong about that one . I'm using 10.8 (purchased and downloaded) on the internal HD of this MBP8,3 (2.2 GHz, 17"), and I am also able to boot into 10.7.4 and 10.6.8 from external FW800 partitions.
However, I DO have problems with my MBP9,1. It came with 10.7.4 installed and ran fine. Then I purchased and installed 10.8. It ran fine but could no longer boot from 10.7.4 on an external partition. I then reinstalled 10.7.4 on the internal HD and discovered that it is still unable to boot (even 10.7.4) from an external FW800 partition.
One of Apple's Senior Support Advisors has done some remote troubleshooting but the case is still open and unresolved. An earlier Apple Support case suggested that when, I installed the downloaded copy of 10.8, there had been a "firmware update" (behind the scenes) that is now causing the problems with booting from my external partition(s). This apparently is "a bug": it is not what is supposed to happen.
So - I believe - "the problem" really has nothing to do with hardware capability. It is strictly about Apple's strategy for "managing its future customer base". If you don't like it - use something else - I am seriously considering Ubuntu as an alternative.
If there's a hidden caveat in all this it's probably "Read Appple's Licence Agreement VERY Carefully".

my phone just turned off and will not go back on. my top lock button has been broken for over a year. Help! I have tried plugging it into wall unit and computer but my home button just doesnt do anything!

It seems that year long delay from having your lock button repaired has finally caught up to you.  Sounds like you have some damage to your phone that requires repair/replacement.  Take it to a Apple store or contact Apple Tech Support.

I am having trouble trying to boot from my lion osx install disk on a 2007 macbook.  The disk ejects when I start up with the option key depressed.  Anyone have any ideas?
    Thank you.

How did you get a Lion OSX install disc? They don't exist. Do you mean the gray disks that came with your 2007 MacBook?
If you mean the gray disks, try starting up with the "c" key held down.
What version of OSX is on your MacBook now? Have you tried booting from the Recovery partition?

IPhone5. I have lost my contacts when moving from BT Yahoo to BT Mail. I do not backup to iCloud and do not use my mail account to store contacts.  Can anyone help find the contacts on my phone and restore them?

Contacts are designed to be synced to a supported application on the computer or a cloud service like Gmail, iCloud, or an Exchange server.
Have you failed to use the device as designed?

  • Can u boot from a Mac in target disk mode

I'm wanting to know if I put a Mac mini in target disk mode, can I boot from that Mac mini from my MacBook Pro. I'm wanting to set up a mini as a server but it may have to be the basic and ill install server on it but I prefer to do it without using a monitor. I'm curious to know if its possible.

You don't need a monitor with the MM, and neither boot in Target Mode. Like me, use screen sharing for remote access over the network:
On the MM, -> System Preferences -> Sharing, there check Remote Management and choose which user, if not all, may have access. If you're not the only one, you can limit access for each user under Options.
Under  -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver, it makes sense to check Wake for network access.
Then you can log out from the MM, leave it sitting at the login screen and turn off or disconnect its screen.
On the remote Mac, open Finder and find the MM under Shared. Click in it, then on Share Screen. You'll need to enter the login credentials for your account on the MM, eventually save it to your Keychain. Then your MM's login screen should appear in a window on your remote Mac. You have now full access to the MM.

  • Can you use a USB ext hard drive to boot from clone image?

I am not concerned about speed as much as having some kind of external drive to copy clone image to from my MacBook Pro.  I know with older Macs you used to have to use Firewire connections for the Macs to boot from the external drives.  I thought I saw something that said you now could also use USB.  I'm pretty sure my MacBook Pro 17 (June 2009) has USB 2.0 version ports, so should I be able to do this?  I know firewire would be faster but this is only for emergencies and until I could get my internal drive replaced.  Also, any suggestions on brands (WD, Seagate, OWC) would be useful.

Yes, hold option booting from USB cloned boot drives work.
Although FireWire 800 is faster as you already know.
As always check to make sure you can.
Another secret, Mac's can be option/c booted off burned ISO of PartedMagic cd's too.
What's nice about this little gem, the whole Linux operating system loads into RAM and you can copy files from the non-boooting Mac's internal hard drive to a external drive, of nearly ANY format.
You can also burn disks, as the PartedMagic cd spits out after loading.
And you can get on the internet, and do malware scans and a lot of other niffty things.

  • Can Leoprrd install on a external USB HD and boot from it.

    hi, first post here.
I have serveral external usb hd. I wanted to know if i attach one to my aging G4 1 ghz 512 mb mac.
Put in Leopard Install disc in my dvd drive, will Leopard install on the external and boot from it.
this way I could somehow dual booy 10.4 or 10.5... Is this even possible.
Ps I also have a extrnal firewire drive but would perfer to install and boot from the USB port instead.
I know tiger didn't let me do this....but perhap Leopard will.

a Drive Partitioned in GUID will NOT boot to a PPC (G4,G5) machine. you need to Partition the drive using APM. APM will boot on both PPC and intel machines.
A GUID 10.5 startup will be reconized by the system startup prefrerence. but if you try to restart the computer using that startup, it will give you the missing OS icon and then revert back to the system drive.
Also I've noticed that you must be installing from a PPC systme to be able to install on an APM drive. If your on an intel drive, it will force to repartition to GUID before letting you install.
And since PPC doesn't support GUID, you can't install GUID while booted to a PPC.

  • Intel iMac, Open Firmware Password Protection and booting from CD

I have an Intel iMac I'm setting up for use in a public library. I want to prevent single user login with the Open Firmware Password Protection utility, but if I do, how do I boot from the OS disc, zap PRAM, etc? The OFPP page has instructions on removing the OF password, but it does not work on Intel Mac's. Also, is there an alternative way to prevent single user login?

No, you were right, I just misunderstood. Technically it's called single-user mode. But, you were right.
    Anyway,
Since it seems that there might not be an answer directly related to your topic you could maybe give this a try.
In Simple Finder the user can not restart or shutdown. They can only sleep and log out.
The other problem, however, is if they log out then there are those Sleep, Restart, and Shut Down buttons on the login screen. Luckily, though they can be turned off.
So as of now, if some is logged in in a Simple Finder account they can not restart or shut down the computer in order to get into single-user mode. They can also not get into the Administer account since it is password protected.
The only problem I can see with this is that a person could do a hard shut down, hold the power button down until it turns off, and then boot up and enter single-user mode.
If you want to go ahead and do this, in order to get the computer up and running in the mean time, just post back and I'll be glad to help you set up a Simple Finder account.

  • Impossible to boot MacBook Pro Retina ! impossible to start in single user mode, Openfirmware password set, but safari works!

I have got a Macbook pro retina.
I have done 2 partitions on the SSD drive. 1 for the OS and 1 for the user (with a kind of ln -s /Home/myself /Volume/Part2/myself
I was watching a movie (with VLC) in full screen for a while and I wanted to escape. Impossible, and impossible to reboot.
When I start, I have a directory with a question mark.
I have a Open firmware passwords set (that I remember).
I cannot reset PRAM. (I can not change the RAM amount inside the commuter as this is a retina model)
I cannot start in verbose mode.
I can choose a disk to boot. I see only the OS drive and not the user partition, and no 'recovery partition'. It seems that i need to do a fsck -yff on the user partition but how ?
I can start the OS partition, and i can choose 'guess' or 'myself'. If i choose myself, I have an error message :'there is a error, the session can not start'. If I start with the guess account, I restart, and then I can browse the internet with safari (this is how I am writing this text!)
=> How can i repair the partition ? (open a terminal, boot in single user mode ...?)
    best regards.

Actually, the recovery partition was there, but was not shown as my user partition. I have seen that reseting the PRAM and changing the ram could remove the open firemware password. So i have turn the computer on until the battery was empty. Then I boot about 20 times, and unplug the power supply after few seconds at different step of the booting pricess. At last, the screen default resolution when booting changed, I undertood that i succeeded, and I was able to enter.
Then I boot in single user mode, removed the open firmware password, activated the root user,  and everything was fine now !

  • Problem with kernel panic message - Cannot boot from disk or usb

    Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if someone could help me with a problem I've been trying to tackle for the last few days. I have a 24" iMac 2.33 Ghz Dual Core, with 2 gigs of RAM. A couple of days ago my computer crashed, and when I tried to boot up again I got the infamous grey screen kernel panic message ("You need to restart your computer..."). What's worse is that I get the same message when I try booting from my external drive and the installation disk itself.
I've basically planned on formatting since it's been a while anyway, but since I can't boot from my external drive or the installation disk that came with my computer these are not options at the moment. I can only get into the computer via safe mode. I've used disk utility to verify the disk, and it comes up with no errors. Anyways, I'd really appreciate if anyone had any advice on this. I've scoured the internet for advice about kernel panic messages, and they all suggest booting from disk or external drive etc., which is not a possibility for me right now.
    Thanks

If you get a panic when trying to boot from the installation disc, and the disc is not scratched or dirty, then you have a hardware fault.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to bare metal from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup) or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

  • How do i get a dvd with osx snow leopard to boot from since i lost mine?

Having trouble with my early 2009 intel iMac. I have reset PRAM and SRC, used disk utility in safe mode to repair disk permissions (several were found/repaired) and tried to verify disk. System said it could not verify disk because it needed to be repaired while booted from another source. I could not find my OSX Snow Leopard disk, tried to start from Leopard disk. Now the system wont go through boot process at all. the gray screen with logo and progress bar appears, but after a minute the computer shuts down. I did run the apple hardware test (start up while holding D key) and no hardware issues were found. This must be a software issue.
Is there a way I can download a copy of OSX Snow Leopard on my laptop so I can burn a disk to boot my iMac from so I can repair the disk?

You will need the Mac OS X DVD later, because it's clear that there's a problem with the hard disk. Your Mac turns off because fsck couldn't repair the hard drive, so Mac OS X can't start up. Your only option is to format the hard drive, because it's not possible to repair it.
As you have the Leopard DVD, insert it and hold the C key while your Mac is starting. Then, choose your language and go to Utilities menu (on the menu bar) > Disk Utility, choose your hard drive at the top of the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the drive. If it's working properly, close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X.
If it couldn't be erased, the hard drive is damaged and you need a different one
