Can't open a 2.3 GB TIFF that was created in CS5

This is my first post - any help is greatly appreciated.
I created a layered tiff file in PS CS5 and saved it with layers. It was 2.3GB so I got the warning that the file might not be readable in all programs. I assumed this wouldn't be a problem since I would only re-open it in PS anyway.
Now when I try to open the file, I get this message:
"Could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop"
After a bit of research on this forum, I took a look at the tiff file in TextEdit and it seemed strange to me that the Modify and Metadata date were right, but the CreateDate was 1903-12-31. I just created another 100kb or so tiff to see what that looks like, and the CreateDate is correctly showing 2011-01-04.
So, I'm not sure why the wrong date showed up in the original 2.3GB file, but I went into Lightroom 3, changed the capture date from 1903-12-31 to 2010-12-31 and then wrote the new metadata back to the XMP file. Now, the tiff file in TextEdit shows the correct dates, but they're preceded by xap rather than xmp - not sure if that matters.
Still, with what seems to be a valid CreateDate, I get the same message when trying to open the file. I tried to open it as a layered file in GIMP as I saw suggested. The file opens OK, but it's flattened so it doesn't help me much since I want to work on the layers.
I've tried tossing the plist and that didn't help. I've tried running in 32 bit and that didn't help. I have my RAM allocation to the suggested 70% of my 14GB installed RAM - bumped it to 100% and shut off the option to enable OpenGL drawing but that didn't help.
One other small bit of info - I saved a backup version of the same file when it was about 2.15GB in size - to a different disk - and that one will not open either.
I'm really not sure what to do next. Any ideas please?
Thanks, Dave
My system info:
PS CS5 version 12.0.2 running in 64 bit, Snow Leopard
MacPro 3,1 2xquad core xeon
ATI Radeon HD 3870 with 512MB vRAM
14GB RAM
130GB available capacity on my 320GB system hard drive

I'm not sure about the size when it was open, only that the layered tiff is now 2.33GB. I've worked with larger files with more layers than this one and haven't had a problem. But then again, I used to save those as PSBs instead of tiffs. For no particular reason, I decided to try to save most files in tiff rather than psb where possible. I've never had a problem with larger PSBs.
I have an internal scratch disk with about 750GB of free space - it's not set up with a separate scratch partition though. Perhaps I should do that.
I just created a similar file that is 2.45GB when closed (according to the Finder info) and 3.11GB when opened (according to PS). After several closes/opens there seems to be no problem. When viewing the tiff file in TextEdit, the date is correct.
So at this point, I still can't open the 2.33GB file that seems to have had the wrong XMP data written, but I can open up a slightly larger file. I'm wondering if it is in fact just the EXIF data that's causing the problem. The progress bar while reading tiff format gets to about 60% before the error message appears.
I can open the file from Lightroom if I open it as a copy with LR adjustments applied, but that flattens the file. If all else fails I'll be able to work from there. Trying to avoid that since there were some layer elements I wanted to either remove or modify.
One other note: I did download some new brushes for this project and loaded them into PS. I've gone back and reset them to the default set in case there was some issue related to a corrupt abr file (just reaching here....); but the file still won't open.
Still hoping the layered file can be saved but am out of ideas.

  • I can't open a file in OS 922 that was created in OS X.

The web-pages I downloaded while in OS X (and stored in the HD) appear blank, (white, no logo) when I am booted in OS 922. When I try to open them, I receive a message "Sorry, could not open because the application that created it could not be found".
So OS 922 cannot find an application (in this case do they mean Safari or OSX ?) that created the file. Sounds logical since OS X didn't exist when OS 922 was created. And Safari neither I think (if that plays any role)
Question: does the Internet connection (Internet Explorer vs. Safari play any role ?)
I have no problem whatsoever with files downloaded with Internet Explorer (5.1.6 or previous versions I had). Or from OS 9.0.4 to 9.2.2.
Nor do I with photos (even with Safari and OS X) .
Only web-pages and documents (including TextEdit) done with OS X. And not all files but half of them.

    Hi, I need -
OS 9's Finder uses File Type and Creator codes embedded in files to determine how the file should be handled - what program to use to open it, and how that program should process the file.
OSX uses filename extensions rather than File Type and Creator codes.
As a result, it is not uncommon for a file created in an OSX environment to be displayed as a generic unknown-type document when the machine is booted to OS 9; and for Finder to not know how to handle it when it is double-clicked.
If you know that a certain program in OS 9 should be able to open a file, try dropping that file onto the icon for that program (or on an alias to that program) - some programs are capable of trying to open a file done that way; others won't even try.
In most cases, a file created by an OSX app will not be openable by an OS 9 app - this is understandable, given that newer programs often use more advanced formats than older ones, even versions of the same program.
If you know that you will be transporting a file from OSX to OS 9, try saving it in a form accessible by OS 9 - many programs will offer a list of alternate file formats when you do a Save As of the file, or (in some cases) an Export of it.
Question: does the Internet connection (Internet Explorer vs. Safari play any role ?)
It certainly can. If Safari saves a file in a proprietary format, then IE will probably not be able to open it. However, a file saved in plain html should be openable by most any browser.
You might experiment with the settings in OS 9's File Exchange control panel, particularly the ones listed under PC Exchange. Adjusting some of these, or creating new linkages, may allow OS 9 to handle files which are openable by your OS 9 programs, but which are not identifiable by Finder.

  • Can you open/edit indesign files on CS3 that were created using CS5?

I recently bought indesign CS5 and am using this for my internship; however, my boss is still using CS3 and said she could not open or edit the indesign file i sent her.  I looked under "export" to see if there was an option and did not find anything.  I am using a mac and I believe she is using a P.C., also, when I last sent her the file, I was still using my free trial - does any of this make a difference?  Please help!

This has been covered endless times but anyway, I'll do it again!
You have to export an idml file from CS5, then open that idml in CS4, export an inx file from there then open that in CS3 and save as an indd.  Sorry but there is no way round it, fullstop, end of story etc etc.  So if she is using CS3 and you're using CS5 there is no route between them unless you have CS4, and even then the route is littered with pitfalls!  Look here for a rather long discussion / sometimes rant on the subject.
Ultimately she'd have to upgrade, or you could see if you could buy a CS3 or 4 version but it is very hard to get a legitimate copy, the only way is buy it off someone you know and most people aren't selling because they're upgrading.
Best news last, there is a short term fix, go to this guys blog and you can download a trial version of CS4 which will last for a month.

There's a good chance the file is corrupt. As whomever sent it to you to verify it opens on their end.

This work around has always worked, it may make some changes to transitions but better that than be unable to  open.
Export  from version 6 as a PowerPoint, choose PowerPoint 2003 in the in advanced options.
Once you have the PowerPoint file open in Keynote.

  • Open/fill in form on Mac that was created in Windows?  What Mac software needed?

Created a form in Windows using Acrobat Pro 9/LiveCycle Designer. Need to send this form to Mac user to fill out.  He can't add info to form or see check boxes.  What software does he need on Mac?  Once he completes form will email data back to me to import to form, then I need to email completed form to him to open on his iPad, read & sign.  What software does he need on iPad to open/see/sign form?  He has the program that allows him to "overlay" and save signature.

I'm not aware of any software that allows XFA forms created with LiveCycle Designer to work with iOS. If you want PDF forms that will work on iOS you shold create them in Acrobat. These are known a Acroforms. Adobe Reader for iOS can then be used to work with the forms, but Readdle's PDF Expert has the most complete support for forms and JavaScript.

  • How can I replace an existing app on iTunes that was created with PhoneGap to a new version created with Adobe DPS? I get a 'supported devices' error message when I try to upload to iTunes! HELP!

I created an app using PhoneGap a couple of months ago, and have now just amended it using Adobe DPS. But when I come to upload it to iTunes, I get the error message "This bundle does not support on or more of the device supported by the previous app version" How can I correct this?

I suspect your PhoneGap app was flagged as running on both iPad and iPhone. You'll need the same from DPS. You can do this in AppBuilder at the start of the wizard where it asks what kind of devices you want to support. Note that this is only available to DPS Professional and Enterprise customers. If you are a Creative Cloud customer building a Single Edition application it will only support iPad.

  • How can I open raw files from my Nikon D7100 in CS4 or CS5?

How can I open raw files from my Nikon D7100 in CS4 or CS5?

    Andy,
In the simple and short form, what happens with the ACR (Adobe Camera RAW) module is that it gets updated with regularity, to accommodate the camera mfgr's. changes for their newer models. That ACR works within the host program, such as Ps, PsElements, Lightroom, etc.. At a point, Adobe ceases to support older host program versions. When that happens, the user has a few options:
    Upgrade the host program version
Use another host program, such as PsElements or Lightroom
Use the free DNG converter, per Curt's suggestion. That is not host program dependent
Glad that the DNG Converter works for you.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

    Many thanks.
That suggests that another application has stashed old QuickTime componentry in your system files.
So just in case we'll go looking for older QuickTime componentry in the most common locations for it to be stashed.
First we'll need to change some view settings.
In your Start menu, open Computer.
In your Organise menu, select Folder Options.
In the View tab, make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected, and Hide extensions for known file types is unchecked.
    Click OK.
Now in Computer, open your C:\ drive (or whichever drive you have your operating system installed on).
    Open the "Windows" folder.
If you have a 32-bit version of Windows, open the "System32" folder.
If you have a 64-bit version of Windows, open the "SysWOW64" folder.
What files and folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the title? (In a standard installation of Quicktime you should be seeing precisely two files... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)
