Can't open many downloaded PDF using Preview (or Acrobat).

Hello,
my problem has been going on for a while, and haven't found any post on the web regarding this. I am downloading a lot of pdf files, especially from science journals. When i try to open them, i have a message that says somthing like: "this pdf is an application downloaded from internet... do you still want to open it?".
If i click yes, then an error message pops.
It seems like those PDF are interpreted as Application files, which is strange.
Please let me know if you have heard about this before.
Thanks

From Cnet:
Adobe's popular PDF file format--known to anyone who's ever called up a tax form on the IRS Web site--has generally been considered immune to viruses. But a new virus carried by programs embedded in PDF files raises concerns that the format itself could become susceptible.
On Tuesday morning, Network Associates' McAfee antivirus division became aware of the first virus--known as "Peachy"--that uses PDF to spread, said Vincent Gullotto, senior director of McAfee's Avert group.
Fortunately, those who are simply viewing a PDF, or Portable Document Format, file aren't vulnerable. The virus spreads only by way of Adobe's Acrobat software--the program used to create PDF documents--not through Acrobat Reader, the free program that is used to view the files

  • Can't open or download pdf files

Much of the time I am unable to open pdf files on websites, or download them. Sometimes it works, but mostly not. When downloading doesn't work, I get a window with the front page of the document I want displayed, but I can't scroll to other pages, and it doesn't download. (I have it preferences set to download to my Desktop, and normally download other types of files.)
When I click to display pdf files, I get a new Safari window with a Quicktime logo in the middle.
I have re-downloaded the lastest version of Adobe Acrobat reader, incase that helped.
I have been living with this, thinking it's one of the prices of using Mac, but surely there's a solution?

Can someone help me with a similar problem? Safari
used to work fine, but now, when I click on a link in
a webpage that should give me a pdf file, I just get
a blank page with the url for the link showing above
in the address space. There is no download happening
at all. I find I can download them using Explorer,
but I don't want to use Explorer. I have OS 10.4.8
and Adobe Reader 7.0.5. Thanks for any help.
After reinstalling Safari, etc., I tried installing the Schubert plug-in mentioned in an e-mail above. It didn't work until I went into Adobe preferences and turned off the instruction telling it to display downloaded pdf files. Suddenly, voila! I'm downloading files fast into the browser, and can save them fast to my desktop. So, thanks, whoever it was that suggested that little plug-in.

  • Adobe Reader X 10.1.1: Can't open or download PDF-file from bank

    Hello,
I make internet banking and try to download a PDF-file from the HTTPS-page of my bank. If I click on the Java Script-link to the PDF-file the PDF-file does not open. I can also not download the PDF-file. I talked with the bank support and they told me that they had no such problem.
    Thank you for your help.

I am getting the exact error trying to down load bank statements but when I go to 'uncheck' the "Do not save encrypted page to disk" box it is ALREADY unchecked.  Can't get my bank statements down loaded.  Any other suggestions.  Need help quick.

  • Since upgrading my Mac OS X from 10.6.8 to 10.8 and 10.9, I cannot open newly downloaded pdf files.  Please help!  Thanks.

    Hi,
Since upgrading my Mac OS X from 10.6.8 to firstly, 10.8 and then, 10.9, I have not been able to open new pdf files on either Preview or Acrobat Reader.
I can still open previously downloaded pdf files but not new ones.
I can still open new pdf files online.  However, when I save a pdf to my computer, I cannot open them anymore.
I upgraded to 10.8 a couple of weeks ago and then accepted a free upgrade to Maverick (10.9) this morning.  I was hoping that by upgrading to Maverick, I would be able to open pdf files again but alas, that is not the case.
I really need to open pdf files as a matter of urgency as I do this on a daily basis.  I am not a computer whizz so if anyone can help find a simple yet effective solution to my problem, that would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

When I try to open a downloaded pdf file, I receive this message:
"It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize."
Yet, when I try to open pdf files downloaded whilst still using Mac OS X 10.6.8, they open as normal.  So what is the problem, please?
I have deleted Adobe Reader and re-installed it.  Yet, it follows the same pattern as above.  The same is true of Preview.  It's really frustrating because it means I can only open new pdf files using Safari (so I have to be online to do this).  I need to be able to open pdf files when I'm offline as well.
    Thanks.

I have Adobe Acrobat 8 Standard and I had to reload it on my computer due to my hard drive crashing. Now I can only open and view PDF’s  and I cannot edit them as I could before such as using Tools>Comment&Markup or Tools>Advanced Editing>TouchUp Text Tool. All the functions are greyed out. Please advise.

What's your OS? Acrobat 8 is not compatible with any modern OS.

Why can't I download a pdf file using internet explorer as my browser. I can download pdfs using firefox.

    Gilad D,
    Thanks for the support.
I would guess the plugin is enabled since when I use Foxfire as my browser, all pdfs download and are readable. (just doesn’t happen when I use IE as my browser, I get a blank screen with a small “x” in the upper left corner)
I will try your proposed solution.

  • Can't open libHaru-generated PDF with Reader, other readers work.

Our application uses libHaru to export PDF images.  These PDFs can be opened using PDFlite on Windows, Preview on Mac and some other readers.  However, I have tried several versions of Adobe Reader on both platforms and the files fail to open with the message: "There was an error processing a page.  There was a problem reading this document (14)."   So, it seams that Adobe Reader believes that there is problem with this file.  However, from my very limited understanding of PDF structure, I have no idea what might be wrong, so I don't know how to fix it.  The file is written unencrypted.  It is about as simple a PDF as we can generate - a red-filled rectangle.  I would greatly appreciate any suggestions or help.

  • Cannot open a downloaded pdf file..."The file couldn't be opened because it isn't in the correct format."

I have had this problem several times lately: I cannot open a downloaded pdf file. The error message reads: "The file couldn't be opened because it isn't in the correct format." But, of course, it is a pdf file.

My MacBook Pro (2.5 Ghz Intel Core i5) is running OS X 10.9.4. Here is what happens when reading an online user manual that I want to save to the Desktop and read later as a PDF file on my iPad or phone. With Safari I will select "Export As PDF" and the file shows up on the desktop. Even after multiple trials, there will be a dialogue box indicating the file cannot be opened. If I check the file info, the size is "zero." Trying to save the file as a pdf using the Print menu yields the same results. I have tried both of these methods using Preview, Adobe Reader, and PDF Pen Pro. This strange behavior also occurred several weeks ago and I finally abandoned the effort. But when the same thing happens twice, it becomes an issue that needs to be resolved.

  • I can not open any downloads sent to my computer,

Please help me.  I can not open any downloads sent to my computer.  Every email with a download, comes up with "...contains a virus..."  I think it might be a firewall (don't know that for a fact) but it was happening before I installed the Fix-It Utilities11 and now it happens all the time.  Can anyone help me?  Thanks for reading this post.

    H PWillis,
It is probably just me - I am not particularly trusting - I hate "trial period" software.  I don't know recognise Fix-It Utilities 11; I did call it up and look at the webpage for it and read the cover page...
    http://www.pcworld.com/article/216429/finetune_your_pc_with_fixit_utilities_11_professional.html
    In My Opinion:
Whatever Fix-It might be doing, it doesn't seem to have fixed anything.  It is possible your system is so badly infected that you are in the "badlands" of virus-ville; on the other hand, the sort of "horror message" seems a bit over the top for a tool that is supposed to fix your computer.  The page I read compared this software to Registry Mechanic and that makes me cringe.
IMO, remove this Fix-It software from your computer.
Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features > find and remove it
    Reboot
Install some decent Anti-Virus software and run a deep scan on your computer.  I will recommend two free ones.  You can try one or both - not at the same time; remove one if you want to try the next.  I will provide a web page so you can check on other products.
I have used the Avast Free version in the past; I now use the licensed version.  We also have the free AVG on at least one system.  There are other good products.  The point is to use something to thoroughly sweep your system for issues and make sure it is healthy.
NOTE:  To run either (any) of the Anti-Virus products that I mention, you MUST remove Norton (if you have it on your system).  Norton Security does not mix with other security software.  It will complain when you try to remove it.  Just tell it to go away and it will do so if you insist.  Restart (Reboot) you computer after removing Norton and before installing other Anti-Virus Security Software...  Norton is removed from Programs and Features (above).
    Anti-Virus Software:
    Avast Anti-Virus
    AVG Anti-Virus
If you would like other recommendations for Antivirus Software, you can check out Microsoft’s own page on the subject, where you can find links to many companies who provide Windows 7 compatible products.

You don't provide any details, but from the sound of it you are trying to open an online PDF in a browser that does not use the Adobe Reader plugin: http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/pdf-browser-plugin-configuration.html
