Can't open Word documents

Recently, when I try to open email attachments created in Word the Word program opens up but no document! It doesn't even open a blank document, it just has all the toolbars and then nothing. I can open the documents in a different program (like TextEdit) but when I double click them Word opens up and I don't get an error message or anything, just no document...

I had a similar problem in that the latest version of Works would open many Word documents from my previous computer but would not open more complicated documents that had large tables etc.  I decided to try downloading the free Open Office and found that it opens every Word document I have encountered so far and seems much more capable than Works.

If you mean "I can't double click a *doc file and make word open" then you highlight the file and do a command-I (or get info).  When the window comes up, change the "open with" parameter.  You can also right click and select "other"

  • Can't open word documents in Pages since updating to Yosemite

Since updating my software to Yosemite I cannot open word documents in pages anymore. I can open these word documents in preview to at least look at them, but this is not very helpful.
Also, is anyone else experiencing a serious slow down. My Macbook is choking, and I wonder if there is anything that can be done to improve the speed.
Thanks in advance for any insight/ support you can offer!

Be sure you are saving your Word documents on the PC for a Word version supported by Office 2004 X. The latest version of Office for the PC uses a file format that is no longer compatible with older versions of Office.
PC attachments have icons that do not carry any information that Mac applications use to determine what application opens a document. Drag the document from the email application to the Desktop. Select the icon and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the section labeled 'Open with' select Word from the drop down menu, then click on the Change All button. This should associate all similar documents to the Word application on the Mac. Word documents on the Mac also use the '.doc' extension. If the transferred file does not have the '.doc' extension then it doesn't hurt to add one.

  • Can't open Word documents from Macmail

I use MS Office since I am in publishing and have never had this problem before. But about 50% of the time, I can't open .docx documents that are sent to me by email. Again, this is only some .docx documents. Any ideas on why this might be happening?
Also, it gives me an error message saying that there is not enough disk space to convert this document, but I have about 175GB available.

Try http://www.neooffice.org/ instead of Microsoft Word.
As for disk space, see my FAQ*:

  • Recieved a .doc.hqx binhex file I can't open word document

    Hi
Sorry if this is the wrong place for this but I couldn't find another area it would fit.
I have received a .doc.hqx file which should contain a word document but when I try to download it from my email it says there is an error. I have stuffit expander but it fails to open it.
Then when I rename it as a word documenst (.doc) it opens in word with a load of letters everywhere and says it needs to be opened with binhex 4.0.
Does anyone know how I can get this open?
    Thanks for any help

Pages v5 documents do not have an internal index.xml file. When you attempt to open one of these with the older Pages '09, you will get that dialog. Double-click the document icon, or right-click, and open with Pages v5 to access the document contents.

  • Can't open word document in pages

Word document attached to email loading ca. 70% in Pages then pages closes down and can't get to open. Ideas?

Open the email with the attached Word document again. Then tap on the attached document. A menu will appear. Tap on the option that says "Open in Pages. If this doesn't work, try shutting off your iPad and then wait  a minute or two and then turn it back on. Try to open the Word document again. Although I'm just speculating becuase, I have never had a problem opening a Word document in Pages and every time I open a Microsoft Word document in Pages, it just needs to change the font to a Pages- compatible font. I hope my solution works, and I'm sorry if it doesn't work.

    Hi
According to your description, I suppose that you can’t open document in SharePoint libraries and an error appear.
Does any other version of Office exist in your PC? If yes, which version of Office is the default
    program?
If it’s convenient, please provide some screenshots to let me know, upload them to OneDrive and share the picture link here.

Update Office to 2008 or 2011 or else use Pages, TextEdit or download one of a multitude of free programs such as OpenOffice or LibreOffice.
    Good Luck

  • We removed Pages from the computer, but now we can't open Word documents directly. The computer keeps bringing up an alert that it can't find Pages to open the document.

We removed Pages from my husband's computer, but now when he tries to open documents that were created in Word, we can't open them directly, only through the Word Dialogue box. The computer keeps bringing up an alert that it can't find Pages to open the document.

Select one of the documents. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Open With panel select Word from the dropdown menu then click on the Change All button. This should fix the problem.

  • Can't open word documents in mail

I've recently converted to Mac at my home, however i still use a PC at work. I have installed the latest version of office for mac, however when i try to use either mail or entourage i find that i cannot open attached word documents. For my work i constantly send word documents from my office to my home computer, however i cannot seem to open any of these files.
I don't know if this means that i have a problem with the office i have just installed, my mail programs, or my general operating system?

  • Can't Open Word Documents from my School's Website

I am in a class that requires me to download & print off worksheets from the school's online "blackboard" website. My teacher also has a Mac, and she uses Microsoft software for Mac. Since I use Pages instead, can I not open these documents? I also can't open PowerPoint presentations on my MacBook, I am sure this for the same reason.
If anyone could help me out with this, I would really appreciate it.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Two things you may not have done.
First, use the Mac OS 10.6.2 combo update. This fixes a problem with the Hoefler Text font that is not fixed using the delta update (10.6.1 > 10.6.2).
Second, make sure your iWork applications are updated. For iWork '09 it's Pages 4.0.2 & Numbers 2.0.2. iWork '09 has since had update 3. If you're not running the latest versions & Software Update says your software is up to date, make sure the applications are where the installer initially put them. The updaters are very picky. If the location is not where the updater is programmed to look or if the folder doesn't have the name the updater looks for, it will not work. The applications cannot be renamed or moved. They must be in the iWork '09 folder in Applications. That iWork folder must be named iWork '09. If it doesn't have the '09 Software Update won't find them & the updaters won't work.

What version of Pages are you using? You may need to run Software Update (from the  menu).

  • HT2476 Can't open Word documents. Get error "You can't open the application MS Word because Power PC applications are no longer supported.

What do I do to fix this error? Can't I use MS anymore?

You have many choices, the least attractive in my opinion is to upgrade M$ Office to the newest version.
Look into Pages ($20 from Apple), NeoOffice, or OpenOffice (both free). All open and save MS Word formats.
