Can't remove virus.

Hi, I have the viruses autorun.inf and ise32.exe on my Macbook running 10.5. I can ID and locate the viruses with Clam and Sophos. I have put them in the trash but cannot remove them. If I try to empty the trahs I get a message that I do not have authorisations.  Even the terminal app refuses rto delete them from the hard drive.  What can I do besides completely efface the hard drive?  Of course I can do that and move the data to another drive (though the virus has infected my backup drives as well).  But if there is a way to remove these POS I would like to know.

After much searching I found a solution at besttechie:
Move it to the gtrash, then:
How to force the Trash to empty using Terminal
This technique uses a Terminal command to fore the Trash to empty.  It is important that you follow these steps very carefully.
1.      Launch Terminal, located in the Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities folder or search Spotlight for Terminal
2.      At the Terminal prompt, type the following command exactly as written:
sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/*
THIS WORKS.

It's probably the MacDefender scareware trojan horse. If you have this here is how to remove it.
    1. Open Activity Monitor look for MacDefender process double click on it and hit quit or force quit.
    2. Go to System Preferences, Go to accounts, Go to login items look for anything related to MacDefender hightlight it by clcking on it once. Then hit the minus sign to remove it.
    3. Go to applications folder and drag MacDefender to the trash.
    4. Open finder and do a search for Macdefender and remove anything you see related to MacDefender.
    5. Open Spotlight (the little magnyfing glass in the menubar far right corner) and do a search for MacDefender.
    6. Restart your computer and empty trash.
    7. If you feel you need to have virus protection for your Mac use ClamXav. It's the recommended AV program for MacOSX. Hope this helps.

Flashback is only one possibility.  See About the Flashback malware for information about it and how to get rid of it.
Unfortunately, these kinds of problems can happen for a variety of other reasons.  There's very little malware that actually can cause a Mac to become part of a botnet.  You could have an infected Windows PC on your network.  (Perhaps because of a visitor or because you're using an open, unencrypted wireless network and have a "squatter.")  Or it could be false positives.
If you do all the checks mentioned on my Flashback page and still can't find any infection, you need to lock down your wireless network (change the security to WPA2 with a strong password) and check out any Windows machines that are on your network.
(Note that my pages contain links to other pages that promote my services, and this should not be taken as an endorsement of my services by Apple.)

You have viruses because you jailbroke your phone, and now you're probably spreading them to other phones. Nice.
Jailbroken phones are generally bricked for good. Throw it away, it's junk.

The old rule of thumb was to keep 10-12 GB free. Any lower than that and you will start to have trouble. I was very close to that for a long time and never had any complaints. Now, Lion "encourages" 20% free space (on my newer 250 GB drive) so I try to keep it with more than 50 GB free.
Do you still have the original memory in that machine too? The metal plate you have to remove in the battery compartment also provides access to the RAM. Your machine will take 2 GB of RAM, possibly 3. You definitely want to max that out too.
Regardless, you definitely need a new hard drive. When Apple switched to PC components, they had to take a quality hit. These 2.5" notebook hard drives are not very reliable. I'm surprised your hard drive hasn't died by now. I usually get a new hard drive with every major OS upgrade. A $ 50 investment every couple of years is no big deal.
Unfortunately, you (and I) suffer from being an early adopter in 2006. Those 32-bit machines only accept 2 GB RAM (maybe 3) and are only 32-bit so they can't be upgraded to Lion. Because of this limitation, you won't see as dramatic an improvement as you would with a 2007 machine. If you run more than a couple of applications, your hard drive is always going to have to be doing some VM work. My 2006 machine has even lost its bluetooth. I gave it to my brother. My very similar 2007 Macbook is still running great.
So, you must get a new hard drive because your old one is likely on death's door. If you don't have at least 2 GB - get it. If you can't afford a new machine, you might want to consider an SSD. That might help mitigate your RAM limitations. You can spend from $ 100 to $ 350 and get a dramatic speed improvement.

I have a trojan horse virus.36c09694-167c0775 Norton can not remove or quarrantine.Help

I don't think anyone here will be able to identify which trojan that is, or whether, even, it's a Mac trojan. I would contact them. Only they will know what that code is supposed to mean.
BTW, there is no such animal as a trojan horse virus. There are trojans and viruses, two entirely different things. Thre are no viruses at all for Mac.

I think the McAfee suite will do the trick when I pay them a one-time fee of $69 or $179 for a year for unlimited support.
Your call of course but IMO a waste of money. Please read this first:
There are many forms of ‘Malware’ that can affect a computer system, of which ‘a virus’ is but one type, ‘trojans’ another. Using the strict definition of a computer virus, no viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions. The same is not true of other forms of malware, such as Trojans. Whilst it is a fairly safe bet that your Mac has NOT been infected by a virus, it may have another security-related problem, but more likely a technical problem unrelated to any malware threat.

  • I have all the anti-tracking addons so when I found 5 downloads in my "my computer"download files I was puzzled so how can I remove these that got past the addons without deleting the whole folder?

about a week ago or more I added all the Firefox addons to prevent tracking on facebook and google then when I was sharing a picture from my "my documents" under the files in the "my downloads" on my desk top and I didn't download them. Is there a way to remove those files and prevent a third party from downloading to my files? I can not remove the folder as its the one with all my downloads like family pictures?

What were the names of the files? To my knowledge there is no way files can automatically download themselves unless they are told to do so by a addon, virus or malware. Are you sure another family member didn't download those files?
It may turn out the files are not dangerous.

  • Two Adobe Reader versions installed: Can't remove ver 8.2.2

I want to know how to remove one of the two versions of Adobe Reader, both of which are now installed (simultaneously) on my Windows XP Home Edition system.
Add/Remove programs shows both of these:
-- Reader v8.2.2 (This is the one I can't get rid of).
-- Reader v9.3xx (This is the one I want to keep).
I can't remove the v8.2.2 program. Error message says to ask the vendor how to do it (or, something like that). Here I am, asking politely.
It should have been removed automatically (in my opinion) when I attempted to install version 9.3xx, but it didn't. Typical.
I need a simple solution that works.
Note: Version 10xx messed up my entire computer badly, therefore I do not want to install it again. It cost me a small fortune to get my OS running again. It was not a virus or malware, either. My system was clean before installing version 10xx.

You are correct. It was Adobe Flash v10xx that I meant instead of Reader.
I did a lot of reading in various web sites and forums about Microsoft's "Cleaner" tool that you recommended. Most people are saying that it can actually cause more problems than it solves. That's the main reason Microsoft stopped offering it. Apparently, the cleaner tool doesn't distinguish specific programs and their requirements when it removes dll's and other filetypes. It just removes all of them, which can disable other programs on my system that need them.
I wrote, originally hoping that Adobe itself would know how to get rid of a program that THEY put on my system. Yes, I agreed to installing it, but I believe any company who produces something for the Windows user-market, should make certain that people can uninstall it completely. It's their product. I shouldn't have to beg for help, go to Microsoft or any other place to get utilities (which are no longer supported!), to merely uninstall a program.
And, I noticed that this forum offers no way for me to EDIT my own posts! That's a shame, because I'd like to re-word it.
Although I appreciate your replying to me very much, at this point I'm afraid to use the utility you suggested. There must, or should be some other way to get rid of a program (which ADD/REMOVE Programs can't do). Adobe is at fault.
If I don't get another solution soon, I'll just delete this entire topic.
    Thank you, again.

  • Can't remove an application or unwanted web sites.

I Can't remove an application that opens at startup and can't be closed; it can't be removed because it is in use.  How can I can I bypass the normal startup without a boot disc, or how can I make a boot disc?  This obnoxious software is call Mac Protector - anyone have experience with it?  It says it is a virus scan (I thought it was a Apple product), and starts scanning automatically.  Amazingly, it finds all kinds of serious threats that can't be removed without a paid subscription.  It has a "settings" option to not open at startup, but it does regardless of the settings.  I also started getting spontaneous **** websites opening in the middle of whatever I'm doing.  They started when this software started.  Hmmmm.  My pop-up block is on, but I can't figure out how to stop these sites either.  All in all, not a great day.  Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Macs don't get viruses. Trojans are a different matter - if you allow them to be installed.

after removing virus from xp home. itunes gives error -50 when i try to open it.

Ah, the old jokes are still often the best ones, rIcHaRd ...
The -50 in that context can indicate damage to your Apple Application Support. (Apple Application Support is where single copies of program files used by multiple different Apple programs are stashed.) So I'd first try a repair install of your Apple Application Support.
Restart the PC. Head into your Add or Remove programs control, select "Apple Application Support", click "Change" and then click "Repair".
Does the repair install go through okay? If so, does your iTunes start launching again?
