Can't repair Macintosh HD in Disk Utility (extended attributes)

Hi all,
I have a Retina Macbook Pro with one of them new fancy SSDs in it. I'm running 10.9.3 all up-to-date and am a bit computer-savvy, but I'm more than puzzled by what my Mac has been doing as of late.
When trying to install Windows via Bootcamp, I ran into an error message in the Partitioning step of the process. I hopped into Disk Utility, figuring I could simply partition from there (something in me trusts Disk Utility more than the Boot Camp Assistant). Partition failed!
I then executed the "Verify Disk" command in Disk Utility, only to be told I needed to restart from the Recovery Partition and use the "Repair Disk" function of Disk Utility then. Log of this whole event is at the end of this post, but the offending line seems to be
2014-06-12 20:59:30 -0400: Checking extended attributes file.
2014-06-12 20:59:30 -0400: (It should be 15783744 instead of 14437995)
I then restarted and followed these instructions. "Verify Disk" found no errors, nor did "Repair Disk." I rebooted, only to be met with the same problem!
Is there some sort of lower-level command I can use to repair my disk if I boot in Single User mode or something?
Thanks,
Nathan

I'm having a similar problem with my G4 Desktop.
I have a 2nd internal hard drive and 2 FW Drives.
None of them are able to be verified or repaired using DU.
I get the following message: "Verify volume failed with error Could not unmount disk." And then some message about "make sure that all your files are closed."
I tried soft-booting by holding the shift-key down just as a trouble-shooting idea and I was able to verify and the drives were working well. However, when I restarted in normal mode I was not able to verify or repair.
What is my G4's problem? Why does it need to use that secondary drive in order to operate? What do I need to do to fix it?
Any suggestions?

  • Can't erase Macintosh HD with disk utility in recovery mode

    Hello Apple users,
Two days ago, my MacBook pro was suddenly forced to turn off and after restarting my MacBook it did not turn on anymore. Every time after the *boing* an apple sign with a status bar appears and if this bar is at 1/4 the macbook turns off again and the whole process starts again.
Luckily i was able to acces recovery mode and surprisingly my hard drive seems to be OK, so i was able make a backup of my most important files. I thought te best option for now would be erasing my macintosh hd and install osx yosemite as a new macbook.
But here is the problem: when I try to erase my Mac hd, i get this message (not sure if this is te correct translation from the dutch message) "not able to erase, disk can not be unmounted". I searched google for solutions and I found some topics saying that this isnt possible, because it is also the startup drive.
Are hou guys familiar with this problem and are there any solutions? The recovery drive wasn't available, so the recovery runs via the 'internet recovery'.
    Thanks in advance

  • Disk Utility can't repair Macintosh HD.  What should I do?

Here is a "quick" synopsis of what has happened thus far:
About one month ago, my computer started getting very sluggish (ie, it would take forever to startup, would always freeze after sleep, etc.)  I lived with it for about two weeks, since it would always run quickly after waiting ~30 minutes after starting/waking up.  Eventually, this grew old.  I browsed the internet and did multiple suggested fixes (reset PRAM, run Disk Utility, ran in Safe Boot Mode, etc.).  Nothing seemed to work.  I opted to zero out the harddrive and reinstall Mountain Lion after making a backup.  That was about two weeks ago.
Everything worked fine, up until yesterday.  Once again, things started getting slow.  I decided to shut down my computer for the night and would check it in the morning.  When I turned it on this morning, it wouldn't startup correctly.  I could login, etc., but it was frozen and I couldn't open any applications without getting the spinning beach ball.  I waited about an hour, but it was still slow/loading.  I shut the computer down and booted it in Verbose Mode.  I ran the various commands to check the conditions of my disk, but when I ran the "fsck -fy" command, I got an "I/O Error."  I then tried rebooting my Mac, but it would get to the gray screen with the apple logo and the spinning wheel, and then the progress bar would appear.  Before the progress bar did anything, it would shut itself down.
I then started the computer up and directly went to OS X Utilities.  I went into Disk Utility and tried to check permissions and repair the disk.  Only this time, Macintosh HD was grayed out and seemed to be unmounted.  I couldn't get it to mount.  I went into the Apple Store to have them run their own diagnostics.  However, the apple store employee was unable to get the test working, so that was basically a bust.  At this point, the computer still didn't turn on.
I got home and, just for kicks, held the "N" key while booting up my computer.  For whatever reason, my computer started up (though it took a long time and there was a progress bar).  Now, I made another backup of my disk and am wondering what to do.  I ran Disk Utility again to repair my disk, but it says that Macintosh HD is not able to be repaired.  When I checked permissions, there were tons of Input/Output Errors.  Based on my research, it would appear that I have two solutions.
I can either purchase DiskWarrior and use that to try and solve my problem, or I could just get a new hard drive (and I would upgrade to a SSD or SSHD).  DW is about $50 if I just download it, and the hard drive would cost me $150 or so.  Since I don't know exactly what is wrong with the disk, I don't know if DW would be able to fix it.  That being said, if the hard drive isn't the problem, there would be no reason for me to purchase a new one.  I guess I would just like some advice, as to what you would do.  I apologize for the long post.
TL;DR: Disk Utility can't repair Macintosh HD.  Should I get DiskWarrior or a new harddrive?
    Thanks in advanced!

Most importantly, youve already backed up all the data.  All else is cake.
A new HD would cost you only $20 more than disk warrior,....theres no reason to repair a worthless crippled HD, .....new HD 1TB is $70.
Once you back up all the data on a failing HD, further diagnosis has no meaning,....not anymore.
Grab a 1TB  or 750GB  Toshiba/Hitachi (both used by Apple inside their Macbook Pro nonRetina,...both are made by Hitachi)  5400RPM SATA HD.
Forget the repair,.......repair only serves to bring a HD to a point of BACKUP.....since youve already done that, its now just wall art or trashbin fodder.
These are the same HD used by Apple in their Macbooks

In the future ALWAYS remember to have 2 backups for everything.  2 backups is 1, and 1 is none.
That way when something crashes (and they all do).....its no worries.

  • Can't repair Macintosh HD - incorrect number of file hard links

    Hi,
Under Maverick, my computer started to become slow.  I see the spinning wheel frequently.  I upgraded to Yosemite telling myself that the new OS X installation process would clean anything not working properly under Maverick.  However, my computer is still slow.
I tried to verify the Macintosh HD using disk utility and an error prompted me to repair my hard drive because of an error.
My Yosemite is in French : Nombre de liens physiques du fichier incorrect.
I think it would translate to incorrect number of file hard links.
When rebooting using Command - R and verifying my Macintosh HD with the disk utility, it found no error and consequently, the repair function did not help.
When rebooting and running disk utility, I still have the incorrect number of file hard links error.  I have a MacBook Pro 2012
    1.  Is the error incorrect number of file hard links causing my computer to be slow?  What is this error?
    2.  What should I do to correct this if the disk utility does not find an error when rebooting using command - R?
    3.  I have back-up using time machine, but I'm unsure that I should be restoring these back-up : not sure exactly when the error started and if I restaure a back-up "pre-error", would it correct the error?
    Thanks for your help

Thank you for the reply! I can't remember what it said after the repair except for the big green letters telling me that the volume appears to be working. I just ran a verify from the install disc again and the message read " the volume appears to be working ok". After that I ran another verify from the hard drive and got the incorrect # of file hard links, volume header needs minor repair, the volume HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired, Error this disc needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disc and use disc utility to repair this disc.
The computer seems to be running great, I am fully backed up but not sure how concerned I should be.

  • Why i can't erase the hd in disk utility

i'm using os x lion and can't erase my hd using disk utility, what i need to do is create a bootcamp partition but the system won't let me unless i first erase my hd, recover using time machine and then try again the bootcamp partition, any help?
    thx!

Your  hard disk is probably fragmented. You have several options:
    1. Use a 3rd party disk defragmenter like idfrag and defragment your drive (may or may not work)
    2. Go to disk utility and repair the volume (works for some)
    3. Do a complete reinstall (like you said)
I'm sorry, but I don't really know how to wipe it. Try some Google searches or take it to an apple store to get some proffesional help. You could always try the other two options though.
Good luck, sorry I can't help much,

  • Clone old Macintosh HD to New Macintosh HD with Disk Utility?

I've just replaced the 160GB HD in my MBP with a larger faster drive.
Is it possible to essentially clone my old 160 (now connected via USB) to my newly installed and formatted Macintosh HD via disk utility or some other utility available on the Leopard Install disk?
I tried using Time Machine. I've been backing up the entire system all year, but when I tried to restore from Time Machine, it:
    a) took 32 hours to complete the restore.
    b) only restored the entire system as it stood on December 30th! Everything I've been backing up since then is not only not on the new drive, but no longer available on Time Machine.
Fortunately, my old Macintosh HD is completely accessible.

Worked like a charm! Thanks all.
    For the record:
    TIME MACHINE RESTORE:
32 hours - restored system to current state of initial back up when I first used Time Machine
    CARBON COPY CLONER:
2 hours - Cloned 96GB of previous Macintosh HD onto newly installed disk. Couldn't have been easier. The interface for CCC is very straight forward and intuitive.
If I were to do this again, I'd forget about Time Machine for a system restore and use CCC to clone the drive before I installed it.

    Hi barcolana,
If you are having issues using Disk Utility on your Mac running OS X Mavericks 10.9.2, you may want to make sure that you are booting to Recovery before using Disk Utility; you may find the following article helpful:

  • Power outage. AEBS says repair is needed but disk utility can't repair it??

This happens every time the power goes out. I would wake up and my airdisk would no longer mount. It says it needs a repair (256 error). I plug it into the MB and it says it's in read-only mode. Also, disk utility cannot repair it; says there's a filesystem verification error or something.
What the ****? Why can I never seem to repair this drive when the power goes out?
Would disk warrior be a good investment? I could repair the disk before I upgraded from Tiger, but I cannot seem to repair it using disk utility in Leopard. Anyone have an idea? Thanks.

My AEBS has been working fine with the newest firmware upgrade in regards to the disk utility. However, the other day I was doing some cord management and accidentally unplugged my AEBS. Ever since then I have been unable to get my USB Hard Drive to mount.
Originally, I was getting an error stating that the disk was in need of repair, and that it could not mount the volume. I read on another one of the threads that another person was having a similar issue, and what he did was disconnect the USB drive from the AEBS reboot the AEBS. Plug the USB HD into his Mac, run a disk repair, and then renamed the USB HD, so from going to something like HardDrive to WiFiHD, ejecting it from the Mac, and plugging it back into the AEBS and it worked fine.
Well granted I tried that. Now I am no longer getting any error on the AEBS, now the issue is on the MacBook when I try to mount the drive I get an error saying: Could Not Mount The Volume "HardDrive" where "HardDrive" is the name of the volume. So I am thinking that my AEBS is working fine now for the disk utility except that either my MacBook or my AEBS is still trying to mount the HD under the old volume name and not the new drive name. Does anybody know where that information is stored or where I could possibly access it to change it?

  • Can you help? -- Browser Webpage Loading Problems after Repairing File Permissions with Disk Utility

    Hello,
I have been experiencing extremely slow startup times and slow application startup times for the past month on my 7-month old iMac.
I read in many places, including the Apple communities, that "repairing file permissions" using the Mac Disk Utility would help. So I ran it and now all my browsers including Safari and Firefox will not load or take 5 to 10 minutes to load a webpage - especially websites that have login features (eg. Gmail, Facebook, Hotmail).
As of my last re-start, Firefox will not load webpages and Safari is extremely slow at opening anything.
Has this problem occured for anyone after "repairing file permissions"?
    And can anyone assist?
    Thank you,
    Shane

    The Solution?
REINSTALL OSX using the Install DVD.
I called APPLE Support and we went through a troubleshooting process to rule out Network Issues, Software Issues, File Issues and Hardware Issues. This process was very thorough.
In the end, we used the Operating System Installation DVD to reinstall the system, which took about 60 minutes including downloading the updates. Reinstallation did not affect any files or lose any applications. Everything was as I left it -- nothing was missing. Easy.
Now everything is back to normal.

  • 2nd Hand iMac wont boot. Tried "repairing drive" in recoveryHD disk utility but doesn't fully pass through. HELP! :(

I have just purchased a second hand mac from Gumtree as Im eager to get into the beauty that is OS X.
But when I try and boot it will just stay at the apple logo with the spinning bar.
I booted into the recoveryHD with COMMAND+R and launched disk utility, I then proceeded to click "repair disk" on Macintosh HD.
It hangs for a while but then says "The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely" and then says ERROR:Disk utility cant repair this disk, backup as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk and restore your backed-up files.
I then tried to "re-install OS X Mavericks" but I need an apple ID with Mavericks purchased (please note I am on a windows machine and cant do this).
I've tried calling 133 622 but apparently their phones aren't on from 9am-9pm as stated (It's currently 7:30pm).
This is turning me off Macs as this sort of stuff should not just "happen" and due to apples "no windows support" views I cant actually do anything.

Mavericks is a free OS yes? If theres a way I can get it as a purchase on my Apple ID I can download and restore. I was just wondering whether there was a way to restore from the recoveryHD
And as for the no windows support, their OS X utilities image for USB is only available as a .dmg so I cant use that tool to recover from the recovery partition

  • Repair my HD using disk utility, please help!

hi, i performed a "verify disk" in disk utility on my "MACINTOSH HD" and apparently "1 HFS volume needs to be repaired" however, the "repair disk" button is greyed out, how can i fix this HFS volume????
also if someone could tell me what a HFS volume is and if it is important, that would be great!
    Thanks!

    > however, the "repair disk" button is greyed out, how can i fix this HFS volume????
You need to restart using the system CD/DVD and run Disk Utility from there.
    1. Insert system CD/DVD into your PowerBook's optical drive
    2. Restart
    3. Press, and keep pressed, the 'C' key after you hear the startup chime
    4. Release the 'C' key when you see that the PB has restarted into OS X displaying a multilingual selection window
    5. Click through to the 'Installer' screen
    6. From the 'Utilities' menu, select 'Disk Utility'
    7. Select your PB's disk from the left hand panel

    9. Click on 'Repair Disk'
NB. The "HFS volume" should be your PB's internal drive - and yes it is important (without it you have no drive).

I have a problem. I can't delete or build a partition on my Macintosh HD. The options for deleting or build a partition are greyed out. I try to boot from a external drive and open disk utility, but still the same problem. I also tried iPartion but it don't work.
I have a iMac (late 2013) with 3 TB fusion drive on OSX 10.9.4

Macs with Fusion drive use CoreStorage to manage disk objects.
You should use Terminale and command

  • Can I repair a Snow Leopard disk from a Tiger machine?

I had the hard drive go down on a MacPro with an Intel processor running OS 10.6.4.  When I try to boot, it gets to the Apple screen and shuts down.  Running the disk utility from the installation disk gives me the error:
    Checking HFS Plus Volume
    Invalid Extent Entry
    Volume Check Failed
I pulled the drive and connected it with a USB adapter to a spare Mac G5 with a PowerPC processor running Tiger 10.4.11.  I can read the disk on the G5 with Tiger.  Disk utility on the G5 gives me the same error when trying to repair the disk.
Are there any utilities out there I can run on Tiger to repair the Snow Leopard disk?  Free if possible?
Or a good OSX utility that will let me image the drive to another hard drive?  This is a production machine in a printing environment and I need to get it back up and running as soon as possible.
    Thx...
    Carvelli

I could not repair the disk from the command line either.  It gave me the same error messages.  I did not try Carbon Copy Cloner...yet.  I had an extra 250GB drive which I re-installed 10.6.4.
I can bring up the old drive on the USB adapter, so I am going to try the Mac Migration Assistant.  Which I've never done before.  Does anyone know if it bring over all the applications during the migration?  Or will I have to re-install all the applications over again?

  • Can one use the 10.3 Disk Utility on a machine running 10.4?

    Greetings, everyone:
About a month ago, right before departing upon an international voyage, I purchased a used iBook G4 for a really good price off of eBay as I was apprehensive about dragging my much more expensive MacBook Pro along with me (and the iBook handled Finale, the music notation software I use, and its internet terminal responsibilities more than adequately). While the iBook arrived as advertised in superb condition with 10.4.11 freshly installed on the system, the installation discs that came with it are 10.3 installation discs, leading me to believe that the seller uses 10.4 on his primary computer and had simply installed it on the iBook as a courtesy.
As nothing has gone awry with the computer so far, my question is more of a precautionary one than anything else: if I were to ever need to check my iBook's HDD for errors, could I boot the machine off the 10.3 installation disc and run Disk Utility from there, or would that version's DU no longer be compatible with the computer as it is now running 10.4? I suppose I should acquire a 10.4 installer at some point, but seeing as it's really only a computer I'd use on extended trips/as a backup in case something happens to my MBP, I would rather not if I absolutely didn't have to.
    Thank you in advance,
    Benjamin

Hi Benjamin, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Supposedly, if the Discs are 10.3.9 you can use them to repair 10.4.x, but I doubt ant 10.3 Install discs are 10.3.9, less than that is a no-no.

Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.

  • HT4904 I have a Macbook Pro purchased Nov. 2011 and need a installation CD since I can not repair the HD from the utility program on the Mac.  Seems a **** to get this from the internet.  How can I proceed?

Where can I find an Mac OS X  10.7.4.Install disc for my Macbook Pro please?  I have been searching for several hours now and can not find it anywhere.  The internal repair function is not able to fix the Macintoch HD.  Please help.  Thanks

    Thank you for your answer.
    However, I am not a mac, neither computer specialist.  I also have MacKeeper installed and they give me following instructions ;
Start from your Mac OS X Install disc: Insert the installation disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
        Click the First Aid tab.
Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
Select your Mac OS X volume.
Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
You should get the cd somewhere
Yes, I can still use my MB but not of the repair functions seems te help.
Is your suggestion able to repair the HD as well?  When running disk utillities he tells me that the HD needs to be repaired.
    Thanks for your comments.
