Can't safe boot
None of these worked after installing Leopard. Trying to safe boot with shift key down it just boots normally. Similar problems or solutions anyone? The 10.5.2 is installed.
I had this problem as well. It seems to be an issue with the new thin aluminum keyboard. Try it again using the old plastic keyboard.
Also, when booting up, remember to hold the power button until you hear the high pitched beep. Thats when you start holding the shift down.
This should fix it.

Can't Safe Boot with 10.6.2 and GTX 285
Can't safe boot with 10.6.2 and NVIDIA GTX 285 (2009 Mac Pro).
What the heck am I supposed to do, take out the graphics card every time I want to safe boot?!
Suggestions please! No, I think what it is, is that the GTX 285 drivers somehow are being treated as 3rd party extensions not to be loaded on a safe boot, but the problem is that without those drivers, even if I switch my monitor over to my GT 120 card, it still won't boot. Ugh.
I am considering reinstalling 10.6 over on top of my current system, then putting the 10.6.2 on top of that. If I do this, do I risk losing any preferences or having to reinstall any 3rd-party software? At this point, I'll happily reinstall whatever it takes... I just didn't want to have to do a clean system where I have to track down every single bookmark file and saved preference for my main apps, but it could be this is now starting to take more time than it simply would have to do that from the get-go. Sigh. -
Kernel trap prevents normal reboot, can only safe boot
Hi,
I was trying to connect my mid 2012 MacBook Air 13" with Mavericks 10.9.5 to a projector that I previously succesfully connected. In the meantime I mistakenly clicked to connect to an unknown AirPlay device, thinking it was perhaps the projector. As I was not able to connect to the projector, I wanted to reboot the computer but it never did. It can safe boot and I obtained a kernel trap log file. I tried disk utility to repair permissions, everything seems ok, but still cannot boot normally. If anyone can help me identify what may be causing the problem, I'd be awaiting your suggestions. Thanks in advance!

I wanted to give an update as the issue seems to be resolved through running software update.
Since I was able to use safe boot, I downloaded the 10.9.5 Combo Update file and ran the update. Afterwards, the computer booted with no problems. If anyone is experiencing repetitive kernel traps, I hope this will solve the problem for some of you as well! -
What does this log mean? Fresh os install still can only safe boot
*My head is about to explode.*
*Last night, I pulled my old hard drive. put in new one and did fresh install.*
*Ever confident that this would magically fix my computer.*
*I can still only boot in safe mode.*
*I ran AHT. everything passed. I have reseted every thing and reset logic board. yes only one push of the magic button*
*below is a system log from before I put in new drive.*
*however, after new drive and fresh install and still can't boot I check sytem log and still get same message:*
*Cannot use ATS Persistent Store - switching to old FODB cache code*
*Is this my underlying problem?*
*What does it mean?*
*When I try to boot up normally, I get to grey screen , spinning wheel, then wheel turns pixelly and fuzzy with random colors juist where the wheel is and the grey screen with apple logo fuzzy then black.*
*Any words of wisdom will save my sanity.*

i only have apple keyboard, mighty mouse, and 20 inch cinema display connected. this morning took out memory and tried to boot up with individual pairs in the first bank. first the (2)256, the (2) 1g, and then the other (2) 1g modules. everytime I get the weird fuzzy wheel under the logo after a while, black screen flashes, then grey apple logo fuzzy screen then black forever.
I ran tiger updates this morn. still will only boot to safe mode. then tried to run leopard disk to install it
will not boot from leopard disk.
tried safe boot, then doulble click install leopard, restart, then the saga repeats with the pixely red square around the wheel.
these are fresh drives with only what came on instll disk loaded.
thanks again for taking an interest.
i love this system(well at least i did). I want to install leopard on my powerbook too but am terrified to do so right now since it is working and I have work to do. Can't afford to have no computer to do my work on...self employment is great?!
This is making me crazy. I anxiously await your words of wisdom. -
I seem to be in a world of trouble right now.
It all started simply enough. I had Parallels running when I had to do something. When I got back my iMac was asleep, no biggy. I simple woke it up but when I did everything was frozen. So I waited for a few minutes... still nothing so I turned it off using the power button.
Turn it back on, the usual grey screen with the Apple on it. Followed by the grey screen without the apple, then a blue one, then yet another grey screen... and then that is it. Tried restarting again but ended up with the same sequence with just a grey screen and cursor by the end yet again. Kept trying and sometimes the screen will even dim into the black screen of death telling me to restart but nothing more.
So I tried booting from my OS X Install Disc... nothing, I get the same grey screen. I can't even boot a Mac disc. Tried a Linux disc and it worked. No such luck with anything OS X related even from a disc right now. Did a hardware test using my OS X Tiger disc by holding down the key and it said everything is fine.
Pretty worried by this stage I then try doing a Safe Boot... it works! So the next step is to do a normal reboot... But then I get the same sequence as before. I can only seem to Safe Boot. Safe Boot even allows me to boot Mac install discs. So I used Disk Utility, it said my hard drive was fine. There were a lot of permission issues but it fixed most of them. But I still can't boot unless I use Safe Boot.
Since I can't even boot from the Mac Install disc without using Safe Boot I'm guessing a re-install would be pointless at this stage.
So here I am using Safe Boot, can anyone please help me?Hi C, sorry to take long to be back.
So we have:
Power up leads to a normal boot process until the launchd calls the login window.
Safe boot is successful but the system restart from here is not.
From this point the next one is to reset PRAM and NVRAM as stated in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570.
To perform this reset use these guide http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379 and return to steps in the first one.
After this reset If normal boot still don't work is time to insert Install DVD and use Disk Utility.
It would be useful to use the verbose boot on any attempt by holding COMMAND+V in addiction to any other key combination and read the screen printed messages so you can maybe see any warning that could be an evidence to the problem origin.
BEFORE any of these recover steps you should disconnect all cables, wait a minute or so and connect only the essential for use, that would be the power cable.
The first troubleshooting guide has a long list of procedures to perform in sequence that if not lead to a successful boot will advice you to backup your data (safe boot, connect usb/firewire external disk, copy data) and drive your Mac to Apple Service. Use this guide and take detailed note of what happens and bring it here so we can have more data to work with.
Good luck. -
Can't Safe Boot or Single User Boot with the new (wired) Apple Keyboard
I have found that my shiny new Apple keyboard does not recognize the shift key or command-s when booting, making it impossible to boot into either safe mode or single user mode.
I'm having the same issues here.
Read on Macfixit about incompatibilities with the Core Duo machines (I'm running a 1.66ghz Core Duo MacMini, 10.4.10) and can't startup using safe mode or single-user. Not sure if this has been addressed yet? -
Can't Safe Boot in OS X 10.8.5
I must be doing something wrong. I followed the tip at http://support.apple.com/kb/ph11212 and cannot get OS X 10.8.5 to boot to the Save Mode. It boots but mounts my normal desktop.
I tried depressing the Shift key at the chime and at end of the chime with no luck.
I could use some help on how to boot OS X 10.8.5 in the Safe modeLinc,
I am not trying to get into the Recovery mode. I need to know how to start in the safe mode
OS X Mountain Lion: Start up in safe mode
Starting up in “safe mode” may help you diagnose problems you’re having with your Mac.
Note: To print these instructions, open the Help Viewer’s Action pop-up menu (looks like a gear) and choose Print.
Shut down your Mac and wait 10 seconds.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key.You should press the Shift key as soon as possible after you hear the startup tone, but not before.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator (spinning gear).
To leave safe mode, restart the computer normally without holding down any keys during startup.

I have two internal hard drives (A and B) in my PowerMac G5. I normally use drive A which after some sort of update of significant changes I clone to drive B. Then I will start up from drive B to defragment drive A. For some time now I would start drive B in safe boot mode (holding down the shift key during start up) when I would use it to defrag drive A.
Well, a little while ago when going through this routine, holding down the shift key while starting up had no effect. I've tried it several times starting from both drives, I did things like checking the disk to see if it needed repair, maintenance routines, repair permissions, and so forth, all to no avail.
Anyway, I give up on it for now. As far as I can tell Safe Boot is no more.
Anybody else have this happen or have comments on this."... for some time now..."
Sounds like lots of experience with how and when to hold down the shift key to me, doesn't it? not "operator error" type situation.
If it doesn't go into Safe mode but does boot from the "B" drive, I would check the drive in Single User Mode and running fsck followed by Applejack to remove cache folders and swap files (but not the /Users cache folders).
Also, does Safe boot work on Drive A?
And have you tried resetting nvram? (from Open Firmware ideally). -
When I select the Recovery drive it tries and then I can't get further than a white screen. My curser so has 2 columns of marks like a horizontal barcode. I think it's a software problem. When I boot up in safe boot, I have run the disc utility and it says the disc is fine and I have run the repair permissions but it makes no difference.
Thanks AAndy but I had read all of that and tried everything but I have no disks as I upgraded from Snow Leopard over the internet. I have my Snow Leapard box but the disk is missing so I can't use that and anyway, I can only boot up in safe boot so it wouldn't recognise the superdrive. I had a copy of the recovery on a flash but it doesn't recognise that. I have redownloaded it but cannot get it onto an external because of safe boot. I have done the following
Reset the PRam, reset the desktop.
Tried the D key - no responce
Tried opt D and Command D - no responce
Comant R, jusr R and opt R - no responce
By no responce, I mean that the wheel goes round under the apple and then it goes white - and stays like that.
The only thing that I can do, is to boot up on the option key when it give me a choice of drive. If I select Recover, wheel turns under apple - white wcreen
If I boot up on the shift key, it boots into safe mode and there it stays, quite happy surfing the internet and playing stupid Facebook games, so long as I don't want to use any search engines (none of which work (not finder, not mail, not anything) and then after a few hours of forgotton pleasure, it crashes!
The only thing I can think of to do is to redownload Lion - it appears in my purchased account in the App Store but, Sod's law, our satellite internet is not working and I don't think my phone account has enough MBs - anyone know how many Lion is?
I can't backup because I can't use an external drive and old one stopped working a few months ago, so I haven't been backing up and as this is the first problem I have ever had with my iMac in 7 years, I had got a bit comlascent! However, I am pretty certain that I can re-install Lion without wiping my hard drive - I have done it years ago with an older system and an older Mac.
Do you think that downloading Lion again and re-installing it will help? Does anyone else have any suggestions?
Thanks for responding so far. -
My Macbook Pro (15" early 2011, Mountain Lion, but after reinstall i change it to snow leo) got blue screen every i normally booted it. It enter the OS only when it's in safe boot.
I've tried any solution that i got from the internet, such as:
-Reinstalling the OS X (normal install & clean install)
-Reset PRAM and SMC
-Repair Disk Permissions and Repair Disk from Disk Utility (the result is OK. There's no problem)
-Repair Disk Permissions manually (with Command + S at the beginning of booting)
-Checking Hardware from Application Installer DVD (result is OK)
-Checking from Mac Resource Inspector/MRI (result OK)
-Booting from Recovery Disk is same problem, blue screen
All of that solution is not working. My Macbook still got light blue screen and sometimes blue screen with lines after apple logo and spinning wheel is shown.
HDD is in good condition because when it's checked on the other macbook it can be booted. But if you must know, other HDD can't be booted when its plugged to my macbook (blue screen again). If i do safe booting, it works but can't play video and music also photobooth. I got confused with this case.
Any solution or comment? Thank you very much by the wayHi. I'm not trying to rush things, you may have a different problem, but your issue looks quite familiar to me. I recently had a problem with the discrete graphics card (the Radeon GPU) due to overheating, all because a faulty application of the thermal compound in the factory.
In my case, the problem started slowly and intermittently, a few days after a gaming session (Quake 3) of about three hours (at the moment, I didn't realized that could be linked to the problem).
This issue is being actively discussed in another threads in this forum, but so far there's enough evidence that it's been causing similar problems for 2011 MBPs owners: screen corruption, black/blue screens, and in some cases, a total inability to boot. Some of the threads I'm talking about:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/13150366#13150366
https://discussions.apple.com/message/21110132#21110132
So far, and since the problem seems to affect only the discrete GPU (that's why you can boot in safe mode) a possible solution is to disable it by removing some extensions which prevent OS X from loading the Radeon drivers. This post describing the process (there are different files involved depending of your GPU version, so make sure you are moving the right ones):
https://discussions.apple.com/message/22521574#22521574
In the case your discrete GPU survived and is not permanently damaged, I personally had success by changing the thermal compound myself, which completely fixed the problem (at least for now). I've posted about it here:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/22630561#22630561
I hope you can find a solution, believe me I know the feeling when you see your expensive machine turning into a brick and it *****.
Good luck! -
My caps lock was stuck when I shut down my computer. It is coming back up in safe boot (I had spilled liquid on it).
It's asking for my password - which has some lower case letters...So now how can I get in?
Is there a way to change this password or something?
I have a wireless keyboard, but it wasn't set up - so, It's not recognizing it.
Any ideas?Take your computer to get the keyboard replaced, your lucky it didn't trigger the moisture sensor and brick your machine, so your chances of the machine working well after the keyboard is replaced is likely very good.
As long as the main keyboard is sending a caps lock signal, it's not going to work even if you get in.
If you need to remove files off the internal drive, use a Firewire cable (800 to 400 adpater may be needed) and hold T to boot the problem Mac into Firewire Target Disk Mode and connect the cable to another Mac, the hard drive will appear on the desktop which you can then remove/erase files. -
Why can't I boot into safe boot mode?
I can't seem to boot my Mac Pro (mid 2010) into safe boot mode. Hold down the shift key and it starts, but the progress bar never goes more than 1/3 and the gear just spins. Any suggestions of what this means and how to fix it? OS 10.6.8.
I have had the exact problem for a while. I finally tried a suggestion from applecare. I had a spare hard drive, erased it, reinstalled mac OSX 10.7 (the issue occurred with 10.6 and 10.7 on my Mac Pro system) and rebuilt my entire system one program at a time. I would safe boot between installs, looking for the culprit (applecare suggested it was likely a third party vendor install that created the problem.) I installed multiple programs, tested safe boot without a hitch. The problem occurred after I installed ReadIris Pro (a comprehensive scanner and OCR program). It created this very problem you and I both seem to have.
Please respond if you have this software package (or any of the IRIS family programs). It is possible it changed a configuration file or interacts with something else on the system. Simply deleting the program does not seem to undo the problem. -
Can only start up in "safe boot"
Yesterday my iMacG5 (Mac OS X Leopard) started making a loud noise (fan) and would not respond to mouse/keyboard, so we shut it off manually. Since then the only way I can start it is in "safe boot" mode by holding down the shift key during start up. Otherwise the Mac logo appears but it doesn't go any farther.
I would like to try to reinstall Leopard.
Do you think this is wise?
Is there anything special I should do when I reinstall?
Do you think it will help?
Will I lose any files by reinstalling Leopard?Welcome to Apple Discussions:
I don't think reinstalling Leopard will fix anything, it will probably just waste your time.
You should fix the existing system or at least check out what that loud noise was, which a reinstall certainly will not fix.
It may have been the harddrive, or the system may have severely overheated.
You should boot into the Leopard DVD by inserting it and rebooting and holding down the "C" key.
Do not install it, but after the Language screen, on menu, top left, under Utilities, run the disk utility and repair the harddrive and permissions. If you get through that, you can probably reboot the system normally and continue to troubleshoot the problem. -
How can I back up my files in safe boot
Please help I'm desperate
My MacBook has corroded keyboard and shift key is permantly on. So only boots in safe boot.
Apple want £500 to repair out of warranty
How can I back up my files if USB are disabled.Removing your hard drive and putting it into a 2.5 inch SATA external case would allow you to connect your drive to another computer and access your files.

Some software(iphoto, imovie) can only be opened by safe boot.
I buy a mac book air (MD231),i upgrade the os to os x mountain lion 10.8.1,but i find that some softwares can not be opened, such as iphoto, imovie, chrome for mac,but others are normal,I try many methods to solve, but all be failed.
Then use "safe boot" to start my mac,i find all the softwares can be opened successfully,so i am worried about this.
who can help me to solve the issue?
thanks!Louis_luo wrote:
i already used the method yesterday, but it's not valid.
What does "not valid" mean?
It didn't fix the problem or you couldn't boot into the Recovery HD?
If you just purchased this Mac, Call AppleCare. You should have 90 days of free support. If it is new Mac without any third-party software, then there is something wrong with it. Use the free support you have.
