Can't select after holding option on startup

When I startup holding down the option key, the boot selection screen appears but the mouse no longer changes to a pointer so I'm unable to select something. All I see is the animated clock.

Sounds like you have a problem with your hard drive/OS X. I suggest as a start you try this:
Boot from your OS X Installer. Be sure to use the installer for the version of OS X you have installed. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (or Utilities menu if using Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.1.1 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Can only boot restored partition by holding option during startup

So I had installed bootcamp previously and I partitioned my hard drive, and then just recently I restored my partition, and ever since then, every time I restart my computer, if I don't hold down the option key, then my computer will still attempt to boot the windows partition, and all it will do is show a black screen that says "No bootable device found". Is there any way to fix this or do I have to hold option every time I restart my computer?

    Hi,
will window updates turn the default booting OS back to Window?
cause i had a firmware locked down my startup options. And my bootcamp isn't successfully installed onto my window.
So i was thinking about this alternative: for once i set my default os into mac os then everytime if i wanna access to windows, i will go through mac then into windows. And at the end of the day after i shut down my window i could still boot up in mac. Is this idea feasible.
    Thanks alot.

  • Why is my mac mini server apparently looking for wireless while I hold option at startup?

Besides the Lion recovery partition on my Mac Mini, I have 2 partitions:  One with Lion and one with Snow Leopard Server that I often boot from in order to test some things.  However, it takes FOREVER at the gray screen while I hold option, until the various startup disks appear.
There is a spinning wheel next to a popup menu button, and the wireless symbol.  The Mac Mini is apparently looking for wireless for some specified time, then finally gives up and says, "Ok, here are your disk partitions."  This is very annoying, and I would like to know what it is, and how to turn it off.  My Mini is plugged into Ethernet.
    Thanks,

Are there any Mount points setup or listed in Login Items?
Might try a variation of this from older OSes...
This command adds a delay, in this case 45 seconds, before displaying the Login Window.
defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow StartupDelay -int 45
If the Login Window UI detects that the network servers are available when it starts, it will skip the delay, also if network servers become available before the delay expires, the Login Window UI cancels the delay and displays.

  • Grey lock when I hold option on startup

When I hold down Option on boot up, it loads to a grey screen with a dark grey padlock. Under that is a password entry field then a dark-grey circle with a right pointing arrow. I've tried every password I can think of but it does nothing. When I click enter the password just dissapears.
    How do I fix this?
I wish to be able to select which disk I want to boot from when I hold down option.
    Thanks in advance

    Thanks Linc,
I managed to find another post by the user Don Archibald which solved the problem.
Here is a link to the article: How to Disable a Firmware Password in OS X 10.6 | eHow.com
Pretty much this will work if you are able to boot the HD and have a copy of Snow Leopard.
(I have OSX Lion and the SN disk worked for me).
Put in the disk, open terminal and type 'open /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ DVD/Applications' then it will open to a folder then select 'Firmware Password Utility' which allows you to re-set the FW password.
    Very handy!
Sorry, I'm new to this forum and didn't know how to close the question.
    Thanks

  • I can't select split document option with CS6

Hi. I have Indesign CS5.5 on PC but I have been working on a document with the trial of CS6. I have set a table of contents (in the user interface, not in the book pages.)
I'm all set to export the document. In CS5.5 i have the option to tick the box Export Document at Paragraph Style and then select the style that I want my book to be split at. This always works fine.
However when using CS6 to export to epub i select the Advanced tab. The Split Document box does not list the style I want to use to split the document.
It just has Body text, Chapter Title, intro/outro and Based on Paragraphy Style Export Tag. Why can I not select the style I want that is in my document?
Is it a limitation of the trial?

In CS6, you now have the option of selecting multiple paragraph styles where you can break a page. Open the Paragraph Styles panel. From the panel menu, choose Edit All Export Tags. In the dialog, check Split EPUB beside each paragraph style where you want the EPUB file to create a page break (new XHTML file). When exporting, in the Split Document menu, choose Based on Paragraph Style Export Tags.

  • HT201301 Can't select "Save To" option in File Sharing

    Hi,
I'm currently using 11.0.1 iTunes on a 10.8 Mountain Lion MacBook to try and transfer pdfs to an app called ForScore on my iPad - ever since upgrading to 11.0.1, I haven't been able to click on the Save To button if I have a lot of files in the list on the right hand side. When you scroll down, you find the "Add" and "Save To" button squished up right at the bottom. I can select the "Add" one, but not the "Save To" button. If I try using the tab key to navigate to it, it scrolls through the search fields but doesn't go to the Save To button.
    Any suggestions?

I've seen the same thing that you are talking about and right now I am drawing a blank on what I did to overcome this but you could try View>Show status bar>Off. Turn off the status bar at the bottom of oTunes if you have it enabled ... I think that the status bar option is under view in the iTunes menu. (Not at my home computer right now, sorry!)
You can just drag the file onto the desktop and save it to whatever folder you want from there.

  • Healing brush can't select  area with option-click

Here is another weird thing with CS5.  The healing brush won't option click to select an area to use for the healing.  Instead it insists on imposing a pattern on the area to be healed. I do not know where the pattern came from or how to get rid of it,  And I would love to be able to option click to define the area I want to use for healing.  What is going on here?

found my own problem.  I selected a pattern as my source.  Silly of me.

  • Some objects can't be selected when cloned (option drag) CS5

    Hi There,
Several times in CS5, I've noticed that some objects disappear or can't be selected after they've been copied or cloned.
I can't work out if the issues are related but I did notice that objects which disappear seem to have something to do with reordering automatically in the layers palate. For example, after copying or cloning, an object will move under an object even though it wasn't under it before copying.
As for not being able to select objects, I currently have a line which I can't select after I optioned dragged it to a new location. At first I thought it had gone under another object as per the issues above but after hitting Command Y, I can see it but can't select it.
Have triple checked that the line isn't locked - is there another command I might've hit that might lock an object or stop it from being edited?
    Anyway, all suggestions welcome!
    Cheers
    Ben

Can anyone explain to me what is happening or how I can avoid having these adjacent objects show up on this file? I don't want to open and close each single artboard file because I have hundreds of them.
Looks like that file got corrupt.
Copy the one object from the problem file into a new file.
    Then delete the problem file.

  • After deleting Win at partition 3, there is still Windows option at startup

I bought an SSD, and hooked it with my old hdd to my system. There was a Mac and Win partition in my older drive. I erased system files, but couldn't formatted it because it has important info.
Now at startup, i managed to erase second Mac option and second Recovery option, but there is still a second Windows option, which linked to nothing.
My question is, how can i delete that obsolete option at startup? Is there anyway i can manually arrange that screen?

I'm talking about the screen when starting up the computer and pressing alt button. there has to be 3 options, mac, windows and recovery. instead there is 4th setting named windows, if i hit it, black screen and a blinking cursor appears and nothing happens. because i uninstalled that windows, but instead of formatting that partition, i just deleted windows files, because i have important info in that drive.
now, i want to delete that obsolete windows option at startup menu.

  • Can't use MS keyboard to change startup sequence

I'm using a MS Ergonomic Natural Keyboard 4000 with my Mac Pro (10.6.1); I can't select alternate sequences during the startup (Option to choose the startup device, or Cmd-Shift-Option-Delete to automatically select a FW external drive).
One place told me that third-party devices weren't recognized early enough in the startup sequence to change the startup drive, this is sort of what MS also told me, they said I needed to make sure the USB keyboard option (or something similarly named) was activated in the BIOS…(do Macs even have BIOS?)
Anyway if someone knows of a workaround (other than changing the startup drive in the System Preferences) that would be great.

That ability is reserved for Macs that don't already have a built-in optical drive.
I bet you probably looked at some of the guides online telling you to edit a plist file that supposedly unlocks the ability to create a bootable USB drive on a Mac that has a SuperDrive. But that's all it does. It doesn't change anything else about the process of Boot Camp Assistant creating the partition and requiring installation be done with the SuperDrive. All that modification does is literally "un-gray" a checkbox.
Is it annoying that the SuperDrive must be used? No doubt, especially since this restriction was in not in place for older Macs. This is something that Apple would have to address via an SMC or other update, but the odds of that happening are less than those of you winning the Power Ball. It's a restriction you'll have to live with, unless you want to "upgrade" to a Retina display model.

  • Can't select text on a safari search results page

Hi, I'm using an Ipad 3 I have safari sset to use the google search in settings
but when I search for something and it shows the results page I can only select links holding my finger on the text below the link does nothing.
sometimes the answer i'm looking for is in the text and I can just copy it instead of having to click the link to see it.

I found out that you gotta do a double tap and hold the only problem is its cumbersome and it only works if safari is set to search google or yahoo if it's set to use bing it does not work at all..
I've added the code below which will unlock the text select feature when selecting text on a search results page
I  wrote this java script which allows you to just press and hold on the text to select it.. gets rid of having to double tap and hold and acts like select does on all the other apps. It will also work if your search engine is set to bing.
to use you will need 2 book marks 1 book mark is for google & yahoo the other is for bing
add any book mark then go into it and edit it, in the title type "Unlock Text Selection"
just below the title paste this javascript in
    javascript:void(s = 'hdurj123');  s = '(' + s + ')';  x = new RegExp(s,  'gi');  rn = Math.floor(Math.random() * 100);  rid = 'z' + rn;  b =  document.body.innerHTML;  b = b.replace(x, '<span name=' + rid + ' id=' + rid  + ' style=\'color:#000;background-color:white; font-weight:bold;\'>hdurj123</span>'); void(document.body.innerHTML =  b);
then save it under the book marks bar
create a second bookmark and edit it
in the title type "Unlock Selection Bing" and below that past this java script in
    javascript:void(s = 'results');  s = '(' + s + ')';  x = new RegExp(s, 'gi');  rn = Math.floor(Math.random() * 100);  rid = 'z' + rn; b = document.body.innerHTML;  b = b.replace(x, '<span name=' + rid + ' id=' + rid + ' style=\'background-color:white; font-weight:bold;\'>results</span>'); void(document.body.innerHTML = b);
if your search engine is set to yahoo or google:
fire up safari and do a search for something
when the search results show click on the bookmark "Unlock Text Selection"
now you will be able to just press and hold on the text to select it and if you move it around you can select individual words.
if your search engine is set to bing
fire up safari and do a search for something
when the search results show, click on the bookmark "Unlock Selection Bing"
now you will be able to select text with just a press and hold and even individual words
this only works for search results pages I tried it on a page after I clicked the link and it caused safari to display the page source instead of the page.. I just use it for searches
here's an example of setting up the bookmark:
here's what it looks like on a bing search if your search engine is set to bing, in settings:
you can see that I was able to select the individual words, *** if your in portrait you may have to zoom in a bit *** landscape works without having to zoom at all

  • When I boot holding option, both Mac and Bootcamp partitions show up, but disappear after 2 seconds.

I recently swapped out my HDD for an SSD in my 2007 MBP. Hardware installed fine. I installed Mountain Lion from a time machine backup (of the same machine). I made the Windows partition in OSX, then installed Windows 7 on the partition it had made. In Windows, I updated Bootcamp to 3.3.
Everything seems to work fine in both OSX and Bootcamp from what I can tell. The problem is, when I boot and hold option to choose my boot drive, both drives appear and then disappear in about 2 seconds. They disappear with a "poof" animation, as if you had dragged an app off of the dock. If I'm fast enough, I can choose the boot drive before it disappears.
I tried once again reinstalling OSX from my last time machine backup (prior to the SSD swap), and the problem persists.
I thought it might have something to do with NTFS 3G and MacFuse, because I'd heard that they cause a bug where the bootcamp partition won't show up under the "startup disk" preferences pane. When I uninstalled said programs, bootcamp showed up under there startup disk options, but the problem persists.
    Any ideas?

Actually, this is just getting weirder.
Disregard my edit above. Clicking once doesn't have any effect on the drives. But the drives disappear only coming off of a RESTART from OSX. If I Shut down fully, the problem is solved. Likewise, if the drives have disappeared after a restart and I am forced to turn off the computer by pressing the power button, upon boot up the drives no longer disappear (Regardless of any action I take).
It would seem that the drives are disappearing due to something during the restart process.
Okay: Here are some workflows that might shed light on the situation:
Boot to Mac -> Shut down -> Alt boot : DOES NOT DISAPPEAR
Boot to Mac -> Restart -> Alt boot: DISAPPEARS
Boot to Mac -> Shut Down -> Alt boot -> Boot to Windows -> Shutdown or restart -> Alt boot : DOES NOT DISAPPEAR
Boot to Mac -> Restart -> Alt boot & fast select -> Boot to Windows -> Shutdown or restart -> Alt boot: DISAPPEARS
Boot to Mac -> Restart -> Alt boot & disappears -> Turn power off -> alt boot: DOES NOT DISAPPEAR
So the core culprit is something to do with OSX restart. The method of shutdown during windows doesn't seem to matter.

  • Holding option on boot does not bring up boot selection screen

Holding option on boot does not bring up the boot selection screen, the machine just boots from the previously selected startup drive.
    MBP 17 mid-2010.
    SL 10.6.7
I created a three partition drive on a Seagate GoFlex 1.5 TB drive.  GUID partition table.
Used SuperDuper to clone the drive.  Drive is bootable.  Booting from drive works using Startup Drive selector, so does not appear to be a drive issue.
I'm baffled.  What can I do to fix/troubleshoot?
    Peter

Are you using a Bluetooth keyboard by any chance, I see that same behaviour at times if so ?
I tend to select the desired boot volume with System Preferences/Startup Disc these days although option should work ...
I have noticed that if you reboot right away the option key often works the second time round which is odd.
