Can't split duplicated photo

Hi,
This might sound strange but when I duplicate a photo and want to put a copy in one event and the second in another they seem to be dependent on each I can't split them to two different events move one & the other comes (even after i have re-named it) any idea how I can split them to two different events?

You can't do this.
When you duplicate a photo you're creating a version (or virtual copy) of the photo. Both the first and the virtual versions point back to the same Master. The Master lives in the Event.
You can have different versions in Albums, as these too are virtual. A shot can be in any number of Albums and use no extra disk space. Having a shot in two Events uses double the disk space.
If you're determined to have a shot in multiple events then export the shot (file -> export) and then import the exported version back into iPhoto.
At heart,  Events are organisation for those who can't really be bothered. They are automatic - based entirely on Date and Time the camera records the photos as taken. You can move photos between Events, you can Merge Events, you can Rename them and sort them in various ways.
Now it's time to look at albums which are much more flexible than Events as an organising tool.

How can I avoid duplicating photos in iPhoto?

You can use one of these applications to identify and remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when one library has been imported into another with iPhoto 8 and earlier.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.

  • How can I split a photo?

I have some pictures that I want to split.  Is there a way I can do this?  I am hoping to find an easier way than cropping one side and then cropping the other side.  Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Do you mean you have two photos that are scanned together on the same page to split or you have a photo that you want to divide up into pieces?
If it's one photo and you want to divide it into pieces, grab the rectangular marquee tool. Use the marquee tool to select around the area you want for a photo then copy...ctrl C.  Go to the menu and select File<New<Image from Clipboard. After the new blank document opens, paste...ctrl  V. Repeat, this process for each photo you want to make from the image. Note: Before starting to section off the photo into parts, you may want to add canvas area around the photo and rotate it a bit if the photo isn't level.
If it's two images that have been scanned and you want to separate them, Photoshop Elements Version 3+ has an automated command. Image<Divide Scanned Photos. I believe this will also straighten the images.

  • ICloud Photo Library (Beta) - Can't view older photos from before 2014

    Hi All,
I turned on iCloud Photo Library (Beta) on an iPhone 6 and an iPhone 5s. These two phones had different sets of photos at the time. After the synch process completed the two phones now show the same photos. However, only the photos from 2014 are visible on both phones.
Interestingly, if I go to iCloud -> Storage -> Manage Storage -> iCloud Photo Library -> I can see that more photos have been stored than are visible. Storage reports 2600 photos, but I can only view 1800 through the photos application.
I'm hoping this is simply a Beta bug and my photos have not been lost. With luck they will become visible after a future update.
I'm curious if anyone from Apple can confirm this is a known limitation of the Beta. Or if anyone from the community has seen this same behavior.
    Thanks

I really wish I could like iPhoto, but I don't know what in the world it is doing, and by locking me out of the Finder access to the iPhoto folder and doing things like duplicating photos without my asking, I've lost trust in this piece of software.
First thing is: It's a Photo manager. That's the basic key thing you need to grasp. Your photo is not the same thing as the file that contans it. That's why Finder access is not relevant. Import the Photo, manipulate the photo - losslessly - and then if you want to use the Photo in a document, upload it, whatever, put it into a new file designed for that purpose.
The illustration I use is as follows: In my iTunes Library I have a file called 'Let_it_Be_The_Beatles.mp3'. So what is that, exactly? It's not the song. The Beatles never wrote an mp3. They wrote a tune and lyrics. They recorded it and a copy of that recording is stored in the mp3 file. So the file is just a container for the recording. That container is designed in a specific way attuned to the characteristics and requirements of the data. Hence, mp3.
Similarly, that Jpeg is not your photo, it's a container designed to hold that kind of data. iPhoto is all about the data and not about the container. So, regardless of where you choose to store the file, iPhoto will manage the photo, edit the photo, add metadata to the Photo but never touch the file. If you choose to export - unless you specifically choose to export the original - iPhoto will export the Photo into a new container - a new file containing the photo.
So as long as you're hanging on to the idea that Photo=Jpeg iPhoto is never going to work for you.
If you're willing to let go of that - as you do with Addresses, as you do in iMovie, Lightroom, Final Cut, APerture - then you can begin to make sense of iPhoto too.

  • How can I save my photo stream pictures?

So, Apple in it's infinate wisdom has nearly ruined my honeymoon and I'm at my wits end to save what is left of my digital archive of the trip.  How on earth can I SAVE my photo stream pictures OFF of an iDevice??  I have 210 pictures that I desperately need to save onto my computer and the only place they exist at the moment is inside the photostream.
Not that it matters, but let me vent... the reason they only exist is in the photo stream is because of Apple's under-prepared servers for iOS5 deployment and a glitch in iTunes that wiped my phone immediately as I plugged it in today (no sync, no confirm, just plug, beep, and then a wiped phone in under 5 seconds).
I lost all of my phone content, which luckilly I'm an exchange user so the most important stuff is always duplicated off the device.  But my pictures and video from my week long honeymoon were on my phone and while SOME of them did sync to iCloud, not all of them did (still don't know why THAT is - but that's the next mission) and NONE of my videos were in the cloud.  On top of that, no backup has been done by iCloud in over a week even though I have been on wifi and charging several nights on the trip, and all last night once I got home.  No backup.  Wiped phone.  *** Apple.
Where I stand right now is a photo stream full of pictures that I want to save and cannot seem to get to.  First thought was that since iCloud is a cloud based service I bet I can log into a web site and see all of my content an save it from there.  Nope.  This is Apple so of course that option would make too much sense.  All I can do from the web portal is look at pretty icons and delete my pictures.  I can't even browse them, much less save them.  Again, ***.
So next on my now restored phone (from a week old backup) I can see my photo stream and a nice little save button exists.  Good, that'll save it to the camera roll and I can copy them off like the other pictures.  Nope.  I select some pictures, click save, and nothing happens.  I select 20 or so pictures, click save, and 2 pictures show up in my camera roll??  Again, *** Apple.
So there is also an option to add the pictures to a new album.  Ok, here we go.  Select all 210 pictures, add to a new album, and yes it makes a new album.  Now to save that album off to my PC... NOPE.  The album is nowhere to be found in the file system (where the camera roll pictures live).
Ok, so at least I can now back up my phone so I know that these pictures won't just fall off the iCloud in 30 days.  Backup goes fine... and is 30M in size.  Son of a...!  There is no way that backup includes all those pictures.
I installed the Windows iCloud manager - that sounds like it would let you MANAGE your iCloud content, but nope.  You can manage your payment info, and have it stream NEW photos to you, but you cannot get to your existing photos!  One last time Apple... W T F.
How can I retrieve photos that are in my photo stream?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
Yes you can do that, select the rectangle with the arrow in it, in the top right hand corner of your photo stream screen and select the pictures you wish to save to your camera roll then tap the save button at the bottom of the screen and choose camera roll from the options that appear.

  • How can I move a photo from one project to another

How can I move a photo from one project to another without creating a duplicate so I have the same photo in two projects.
I seems to me in the past when I moved the photo from project 1 to project 2, I would get a number showing the # of photos being moved and you could drag and drop in the 2nd folder and the photos would disappear from project 1 and show up in project 2. is there a setting I am missing.  Now when I drag and drop the photo no red # shows up and the photo stays in project 1 and also shows up in project 2 apparently creating a duplicate.
    Any suggestion?

Now when I drag and drop the photo no red # shows up and the photo stays in project 1 and also shows up in project 2 apparently creating a duplicate.
The projects are the basic containers.  Each image and all its versions are in exactly one project.
You can use an image in many albums, without duplicating it, also in many products like books, screensaver, slideshows.  But the projects are the basic structure of the library and you cannot have the same image in two different project, without duplicating it by storing the same original image files twice. Use albums to organize your library thematically.
Sorry, I misread your question.   Dragging an image file between projects should move the image and all its versions to the other project.  Aperture should only duplicate the image, if you hold down the alt/options key while dragging and move the image otherwise.
Which Aperture version are you using? And which MacOS X version?  Is your profile signature "MacBook Pro with Retina display, Mac OS 9.2.x, Aperture 3.5.1" still valid?
In Aperture 3.6 on MacOS X 10.10.1 dragging between projects is still working as expected:

  • How can i delete the photos in "Photo Library"

How can i delete the photos in "Photo Library"?

You don't. The Photo Library contains all the photos synced to your phone. The albums/folders merely contain pointers to the actual photos which reside in your photo library, they are not duplicated. If you remove photos from your various albums/folders, or the albums/folders themselves, they will be removed from your Photo Library.

  • Duplicating Photos in iPhoto '08 is rough - any solutions?

Two problems: One is that duplicating photos in iPhoto doesn't always work. Usually when I highlight a photo and select "Duplicate" I get a new version of the photo. Sometimes it does nothing at all, and other times it take me out of the event that I'm viewing making it so that I have to go back in and find the photo (which takes time. Are there updates or work-arounds for these problems?
2 - This is the bigger one. I select a photo and choose "Edit in external editor", Photoshop opens with the photo that I'm editing right there. Beautiful! But then I make my edits and try to save it under a different name (Save As) -- Where did the photo go? Isn't there a way to get it to save back into the iPhoto library? Or do I have to save to my desktop and reimport it (which creates a new event, so I then have to drag back to the original event.... big hassle).
Any suggestions on either or both issues? Thanks very much.

There have been issues reported with duplicating photos in iPhoto - search the iPhoto forums for Duplicating
The bigger question is why you are doing lots of duplicates. Generally it is not necessary since iPhoto ALWAYS maintains the original and you can always revert to it if you need to - maybe you are making duplicates that are uncessary?

When you edit in an external editor you just save (not save as) and the photo goes back to iPhoto and iPhoto maintains the original and tracks the modified version and everything is cool - when you do a save as you break the chain and iPhoto no longer knows about your photo or how it relates to the photos that you started with - so if you do that you have to reimport the new photo into iPhoto (just as you would any other new photo) and iPhoto will now maintain it as an original and track any modifications you do to it (along with the one you started with which is a different original and maybe modified version)
So I think the answer to both questions may be a better understanding of how iPhoto works and your workflow

  • Can I copy a Photos library from one Mac to another?

I have upgraded an iMac and MacBook Pro to Yosemite 10.10.3, and am switching to the new Photos app and iCloud Photo Library.  I want to keep full copies of my Photos library on both the iMac and MacBook Pro, with an Optimised version of the library on my iPhone.
My iMac has the master Photos library.  It is slowly uploading the 28,000 photos in the library to iCloud Photo Library, and they are slowly appearing on my other devices.
The question is, can I copy the Photos library from the iMac to the MacBook Pro via a USB hard drive, and expect iCloud Photo Library to work out that each photo is duplicated in the two libraries, or will I end up with duplicates in iCloud Photo Library?  What would be the effect if I were to change the MacBook Pro to Optimised after copying the Photos library?
If I can do this, it will mean I can see my Photos library on my laptop much sooner, and I might be able to get my MacBook Pro to the office which has much quicker upload speeds.  I don't fancy taking my iMac in to the office, and my boss might ask an awkward question or two...
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Yes, and no.  Yes, if the plist(s) don't contain any pathname info.  Obviously, no, if they do, unless of course the other system has the exact same directory structure and filenames.
I should add a little caveat about preference panes.  User prefpanes may store plists in ~/Library/ByHost.  And the plist filenames in there usually have a long code and letter sequence which I think is machine specific.  So they probably would be problematic moving to another machine.

  • How to sort photo events by date and avoid having duplicated photos on iPhone 6+

How to sort photo events bby date and avoid having duplicated photos. Before the sorting by date worked perfectly by specifying "sort events by date ascending" in iPhoto from my Mac. Now the sorting from iPhoto has no more effect on the iPhones. And photos are often duplicated when synchronisin. Before these problems didn't happen. How to do?

You can not  --  neither automatically or manually - you should never be in the masters folder and there is never a need to be - iPhoto is a SQLite database and it's database structure is determined by it (and changes from time to time) - use the supported access methods (direct access to the photo files is not supported and never has been) - either using iPhoto or using the media browser in the lower left hand corner of every open/attach/iupload window
It is CRITICAL that you NEVER make any changes of any sort to the structure or content of the iPhoto library using the finder or any program other than iPhoto

  • Can Iphoto detect duplicate photos in a library?

    Team
Been using Iphoto as my primary photo viewing option, containing photos going back some 10 +years. I am alos running time machine for the back up option. In that time I have had a  library crash which resulted in the libraries being rebuilt. I am also now taking more photos on my Iphone and then improting them into the library. I have two issues:
    1) What ever the cause I when I view the library structure I have countless rols which I would prefer to organise into a more structured and complete album. I understand under Albums you can create folders and sub albums for viewing what you want but the I photo viewing screen defaults to the library which in my case defaults to countless events or countless rolls.
    2) What ever the cause I have ended up with many of my earlier albums / rolls containing multiple copies of the same photo - up to 5 and 6 in some instances. I am reluctant to go through an delete them one by one as I am concerned that without checking the individual photo size I may end up deleting the photo and leaving a thumbnail.
    3) is it possible for Iphoto to detect duplicated photos (like I tunes can do with music) so that these can be viewed in a separate screen and the duplicates viewed and deleted.?
    Cheers in advance.

    TD
Mate hope your on a retainer, Duplicate Annihilator, cheap, functional and seems to be doing its things.
    Thanks.
Is it possible to ge the Library to only show events from like the last month?? rather than showing everthing - I have to scroll through pages of events / photo rolls to get to the ones I am using at the moment.
    Cheers again

  • How can i delete duplicates photos in iPhoto without doing it one by one? Thx

how can i delete duplicates photos in iPhoto without doing it one by one? Thx

These applications will identify and help remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported into another.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find duplicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.
DupliFinder - $7 - shows which events the photos are in.
iPhoto AppleScript to Remove Duplicates - Free
PhotoDedupo - $4.99 (App Store) -  this app has a "similar" search feature which is like PhotoSweeper's bitmap comparison.  It found all duplicates
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free - was able to recognize the duplicated HDR and normal files from an iPhone shooting in HDR
Some users have reported that PhotoSweeper did the best in finding all of the dups in their library: iphoto has duplicated many photos, how...: Apple Support Communities.
If you have an iPhone and have it set to keep the normal photo when shooting HDR photos the two image files that are created will be duplicates in a manner of speaking (same image) but the only duplicate finder app that detected the iPhone HDR and normal photos as being duplicates was PhotoSweeper.  None of the other apps detected those two files as being duplicates as they look for file name as well as other attributes and the two files from the iPhone have different file names.
iPLM, however, is the best all around iPhoto utility as it can do so much more than just find duplicates.  IMO it's a must have tool if using iPhoto.

Hi, I have prepared one photo book (project) with iPhoto using the maximum of 100 pages (3 weeks US!!). Now, a friend shared his pics with me that I'd like to add. Can I split the one book in two with say 50 pages and continue addingnew pages with the spliited ones?
Plus: Can I move complete pages from one iPhoto book to another project (book)?
    Thx for your help!

Select the book in the left hand pane and type Command+D (duplicate).  You can then modify each of the copies as needed.
