Can't transfer files from my PC to my new Mac over our wireless network

I have a Linksys WRT54G router connected to a cable modem, which is connected to a desktop PC. I have a Dell laptop connected to the internet wirelessly, and my MacBook Pro is also connected to the internet wirelessly. No problem there, the internet works on both.
However, I'm trying to transfer my files from the Dell to my new MacBook, and I get to the point where it asks for my username and password. I've typed in everything I can think of, and the Mac gives me Error -43, 'something or other is not found'.
I don't remember ever assigning myself a username or password when I set up the wireless network. I've had no problem connecting to the Internet with the Dell laptop, but have never been able to share files or a printer with the desktop PC to which the router is connected.
What's going on here?

That would be the username & password of the user account on the Mac.

  • I'm thinking of  buying one of the new Imacs and am presently a PC user - how hard is it or how can I transfer files from my PC to a new IMac

I am thinking about purchasing a new IMac and presently use a PC.  I would like to find out how difficult it is to transfer files from the PC to the IMac or in more detail - just how is it done.  Many thanks for any responses.

There are several ways by which it can be done. There is a special Migration Assistant for transferring an entire user account from a PC to the Mac. You would have to establish a network connection between the two machines.
Transfer the files you want to an external USB hard drive from the PC then transfer from the external drive to the Mac.
Ask the Apple retailer if they will transfer your data to the new Mac at the time of purchase. You will need to bring the PC with you.

  • Can I transfer playlists from my iPad to my new mac?

When I sync my iPad with my new mac I get a message that suggests that I can only transfer to the iPad from the mac.  I have playlists on my iPad that I would like to transfer onto my new mac.  Can this be done? And how?
    Thanks

You can transfer the playlist (the actual list), but you can't make a copy of the music from the iPad to iTunes, unless they were purchased via iTunes.

  • Can I transfer pictures from my pc to a new mac via an ipod touch?

    Hiya
So my new macbook pro is on it's way and i was trying to think of some easier file sharing from my old pc to my new mac than a thumbdrive back and fourth x amount of times.
My Pc's wireless card burnt out or something like that happened that makes it impossible for the pc to connect to my wireless network unless i take it into a shop and pay x amount of dollars ha.(X this eliminates the possibility of my using dropbox or icloud to transfer files.
So i was wondering if i could take a 3rd generation ipod touch, and download the pc's photos with itunes to the ipod then from the ipod to my mac with iphoto without losing quality?
If theres any other ideas other than thumbdrives, and burning discs it'd be much appreciated
Mainly i'd like to know if transferring files using my ipod touch would be a good idea or not? and if it could be done without losing quality.
    Thanks

You should ask in the iPhoto and Ipod Touch forum areas.

  • How Do I transfer Files From My PC to my new Mac mini?

I am saving all my Word documents, music files, picture files on CDs to upload to my new Mac. But, what about things like certain program files, like Adobe, etc., and Mozilla Firefox favorites, passwords, etc.? I expect to get my new Mac mini within 2 weeks, and I want to be as prepared as possible. Help! Also, the operating system listed on my purchase order says Mac OSX Snow Leopard, but there wasn't anything to select that option, so I put Mac OSX (10.6.5) because I assumed that was the most current.
Thanks in advance for your help.
My PC is running Windows XP.

  • How can I transfer files from iBook G4 Tiger to new MBP?

Want to export address book and bookmarks. Talked to Apple Care two times. Both told me not to use flash drive.  ???  First said to get ethernet cable.  That didn't work.  Second said to use file sharing over bluetooth.  That made a connection, but won't share.

Thank you OrangeMarlin.  So, my first inclination was to use a flash drive, but both Apple Care guys said no, that that would bring corruption etc. They were adamant about it.  But neither of their answers worked.
I just want to transfer my extensive address book and photo library.  I can see that my bookmarks for Safari might bring problems, but it sure would be a time saver. And what about all my documents?
Over the holiday, family members, Mac users also thought and have used the flash drive.

  • How can i transfer songs from my iPhone 4s to new mac

I recently got a new MacBook (My first one ) but the problem is my old PC crashed and I lost all of my songs that were on that computer. The only songs I have left are on my iPhone. Is there anyway I could simply transfer the songs on my iPhone to my new MacBook? of course, when I go to "sync" my phone to my new iTunes, which is my old account, it says that everything will be erased and what is in my new iTunes library (which is empty) will be transfered to my phone.
Please help!!!! I am still learning this MacBook so please forgive my stupidity! Go Team Apple!

Re-downloading all your purchased music (apps, ibooks, videos, everything) is easy if you purchased them from Apple. Assuming they are still available, you simply download them again: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
Retrieving music that you copied from CD or other sources is not easy. Music is supposed to go from your computer to the iPhone, not the other way around. Moving its content to a computer is contrary to the design.
I wish I had a dollar for everyone with a Windows PC who asked this question. Given their predilection for attracting viruses and other sordid malware, Windows PCs crash with disturbing regularity. Now that you made the wise decision to replace it with a MacBook, get an external backup disk (external hard disk drive, or Time Capsule) and simply use Time Machine. Plug it in and Time Machine does the rest. The drudgery of backing up your system becomes painless and totally forgettable, and recovering from a crash becomes a non-event.
Here is some guidance retrieved from an old post. Since it is old, some of the links may not work:
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads etc) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide

  • How can I transfer files from one external HD (WD My Passport) to another external HD (Seagate Backup Plus)?  WD drive was improperly ejected and Finder no longer recognizes it.  Tried fixing with Disk Utility but failed.

How can I transfer files from one external HD (WD My Passport 2T) to another external HD (Seagate Backup Plus 2T)?  WD drive was improperly ejected (although we did tell it to eject) and now Finder no longer recognizes it.   Using MacBook Pro and I just upgraded to Yosemite before this happened. Was told at Apple Store to use Disk Utility to repartition, but it failed.  It says to backup files and restore.  But how do I backup files?  Or would appreciate any other suggestions to repair drive.

You may drag & drop between external hds.
    Should you run into trouble.
Take the exernal drive appart.  Take out the harddrive.  Try reading the data via a usb adapter. Put a household finan on the hd.

Try a conduit such as Dropbox.
Goodreader or Documents to Go also have helper apps that allow transfers.
Goodreader is particularly good in that it has a integal file tree and you can mount your computers harddrive and navigate directly on your ipad.
Use the open with to view/move files into other apps.

  • How can I transfer files from my mac to my iPad, e.g., mp4 files.  Do I have to use iTunes?

How can I transfer files from my mac to my iPad in an easier way?  I'd like to put some movies on, and I can use iTunes, but is there another way?  I have transferred epub books using Dropbox.  Movies eat up a lot of dropbox space and the iPad has trouble getting them.

USB disk. You still have to go through iTunes.
    Connect device to computer/mac
Select your device in iTunes menu.
    Apps...
At thebottom of the page you will see the app.
Select it and the Add for windows and + for mac
    Hope that helped.
In the long run there is no way to access or uplood data on your device without iTunes unless you JailBrake....
