Can't trash QuickTime

Discovered my QuickTime program was corrupted. Removed it from Applications and put it into Trash (will re-install new once it's gone). But when I try to empty the Trash, I get "Cannot continue because Resources in use" ("Resources" being a program folder).
WHAT could be in use? How do I find out, & how do I disable it so that I can trash QuickTime? I've renamed a number of extentions trying to disable them, so putting QT back is not an option. I need to KILL IT.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

eeret, are you able to restart the copy? The system service that was copying the file is probably trying to complete the copy. That's why you can''t delete it - the incomplete copy is owned by "system" or a system process and is "busy." You, as a user or admin, don't have the privileges to delete it especially since it's "waiting." Once the copy process finishes "system" turns the finished copy over to the user. Until it's finished "system" owns it and, since  a system process isn't finished with the copy, isn't about to let you mess with it.
I've seen this when a copy is cancelled and a flash drive is removed before the copy process actually finishes canceling the copy.

  • How can I trash uninstalled QuickTime 7.4.1?

QuickTime 7.4.1 failed to install but I can't trash it either. I accidentally picked the older Panther when it should have been Tiger. I wasn't sure but might have had the latest already - only the free software I really wanted to download reckoned I had to have acquired QuickTime then two others in the right order. I trusted my G4 to tell me 1st if 7.4.1 was incompatible - too old, it finally told me - not after.
When I drag the uninstalled file to trash it tells me I don't have "sufficient privileges" to trash it. In Get Info the Locked File part of General info isn't locked, isn't even available (not highlighted).
Help. How can I get rid of it? If I have to obtain administrator passwords or whatever how on earth do I do this? I've found the ph no for this country, finally, but what rights to assistance do you have for free software like this?
And is it really possible that what must be a really common error of mistaken QuickTime identity if you try to go by their numbers and decimal points, can be so unbelievably difficult to find the solution to?
All and any answers gratefully received. It sounds like someone among you guys will know what I need to do.

    Thanks Ricktoronto
But it looks like I didn't explain this well enough.
The problem appears to be that I have "insufficient privileges" to trash QuickTime 7.4.1 file BECAUSE my G4 refused to install it on the grounds that the version was too old. That its not in my Applications folder - the existing QuickTime is - I'm taking as confirmation that it really hasn't installed.
Re-installing my OSX surely is a daunting solution, but not relevant I don't think to the problem.
So I don't want to install this panther QuickTime, its the wrong one and I can't anyway. I do want to get rid of it, but I can't, trash won't let me. How do I get the "privileges" that will allow me to?
    cheers

  • Can't open QuickTime after trying to install update 7.4

I've tried to update my Quicktime Software to the 7.4 that keeps popping up on my software update. After it loads, verifies, and goes to install I receive the notice the Quicktime can't be installed. an unexpected error occurred and the installer package has been moved to the Trash. It tells me to try again, open the package from the finder... besides not being able to install the update, now I can't open QuickTime at all. Ideas?

Repair permissions & restart your computer.
Install QT again either from the Software Update control panel or download the full installer directly from QT download site.
After you install QT, repair permissions & restart again.

  • Can't update quicktime on windows xp. Try to install 7.7.3 and it says I have a newer version installed. I don't of course, I have 7.3.1. Have never been able to update it. Even uninstalling older version it still says a newer version is already installed

Can't update quicktime on windows xp. I have 7.3.1 and when I try to install 7.7.3 it says I have a newer version already installed??? Even uninstalling the older one, it still says the same thing. I haven't been able to update it since 2007.

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATION" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up").
In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any QuickTime entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC. Now try another QuickTime install. Does it go through properly this time?

Hmmm. There's a couple of things that might be going on with that one.
Let's try an uninstall and reinstall of QuickTime first.
If you're using XP, head into your Add or Remove Programs control panel. Select "QuickTime", click "Change" and then click "Remove".
If you're using & or Vista, head into your Uninstall a program control panel, select QuickTime, and then click "Uninstall".
You can get QuickTime back either via Apple Software Update (in your Start menu go "All Programs > Apple Software Update" ... QuickTime should appear in the "New Programs" section), or by downloading a QuickTimeInstaller.exe from the following location:

HELP!!! this is driving me crazy...does anybody know how to fix this problem. how do i uninstall old version of QT in order to upgrade to the stand alone QuickTime and newest version of iTunes? I've already tried to manually delete the QT files and folders but got an error message. This totally *****! Both Apple & Windows support are pointing to each other for fixes.

I first noticed this doing html work in /srv/http/, I gave my user rwx and being able to delete files on the command line I assumed I'd also be able to right-click and 'Move to Trash' in Nautilus, nope.
--> If I 'Move to Trash' from within my home directory it goes to ~/.local/share/Trash/
--> If I 'Move to Trash' from anywhere else (even with permission) it fails because there is no .Trash-??? directory in that partition.
It works if I manually create it.

    What arrow?
Have you tried opening the file in FCP?
If there is no error message and it will not play in QT7, it is quite possible the file is corrupted. You will need to go back to the original project and re-export the file.
