Can't use picture as desktop background ..

one day my iMac was acting slow so i rebooted it .. when it restarted my desktop picture was gone (just a blue screen) so i tried several photos (clicking scrolling down and clicking on "set as desktop picture" and nothing works screen still blue , i even tried apples default photos.. i take a LOT of photos and use photoshop CC and lightroom 5 for PP and the computer seems to be working fast as ever , video card seems fine .. i downloaded "adwaremedic " and it did get delete a couple of spyware cookies (i believe thats what it was ) didn't help ...

AdwareMedic doesn't remove spyware or cookies (there's no such thing as a "spyware cookie"), it only removes adware (ie, ad-injection software). Adware is unlikely to be the cause of this problem.
Hold down the option key and choose Library from the Go menu in the Finder. In the folder that opens, find the Preferences folder, then delete the file named "com.apple.desktop.plist". Then restart your computer. After it starts back up, try setting a desktop picture again.

I don't know about HTML viewer specifically, but whenever a GUI object is needed to be used in background, there is a standard method to avoid CNTL_ERROR.
When a program runs in background, there is no "screen" and hence no GUI, and hence a custom control can not be displayed. That is why the program generates an error.
The trick is to avoid creating the custom control in background.

Can't set smart album pictures as desktop backgrounds.

i have imported 'without copying to library' a whole bunch of pics into iphoto and have created smart albums. now i went to 'change desktop background' by control clicking on the desktop and am selecting a pictures from one of the smart albums but its only displaying a blue background. this is true for all smart albums and normals ones as well. when i select an image from the other folders they work fine. what could be the reason?
the primary reason of importing stuff to iphoto was so that they are easily available across applications.

What are you afraid of?
When you import a pic into iPhoto in the default Managed mode all it does is make a byte by byte copy of the pic. Nothing else. It's an exact copy. It makes no alterations, adds nothing, removes nothing.
The pic is stored in the Finder. Yes, it's in a Unix Style Package file, but apart from all the ways to access your pics I'll describe in a moment, if you want to look inside the package you can do so at any time: Simply right click on the iPhoto Library and select 'Show Package Contents' from the resulting menu. A Finder window will open and you'll see the Library inside.
There are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three core folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner. (As your Library is referenced the files will be aliases rather than the actual files.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
Remember: iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
Running a referenced library has a number of pitfalls - apart from the fact that System Preferences cannot use the files.
1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, there are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.

To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Your choice, obviously, but best to be aware of all the ramifications. By all means post back if you require more info.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Other information that may offer comfort:
Events in the iPhoto Window correspond exactly with the Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library package file (Right click on it in the Pictures Folder -> Show Package Contents).
You can move photos between Events, you can rename Events, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Event Name using the Info Pane, the Event Folder in iPhoto Library/Originals will also have the new name.
Mind you, I don't suggest that you change over in one go. I think the best thing to do is create a new Library (Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library') and set it as a Managed Library. Import 50 or 100 pics an explore it, see how it works and see if that does anything for your confidence.

Is there an ARD command or Unix command that I can send to reset the desktop background image to default?

I was forced to create a local user with an automatic login on all of the machines in the building. I listed off many various issues that could come arise by doing this but was tuned out. Now people are changing all of the desktop backgrounds to some pretty inappropriate images. I forewarned the person ordering this that this may be one of the many issues that would arise when doing away with our server based logins, and now I am charged with fixing every desktop every time someone changes it to something inappropriate.
Is that an Apple Remote Desktop command or a Unix command that I can send through ARD v3.5.3 to the machines to reset the desktop background image to the default Aqua Blue jpeg image located in the /MacintoshHD/Library/Desktop\ Pictures/Aqua\ Blue.jpg.
The machines that I am dealing with have OS X 10.4.11, OS X 10.5.8, OS X 10.6.8, and OS X 10.7.4 installed on them, but the OS X 10.4.11 machines are the ones that are creating the biggest issue so I would like to deal with those first.

Ya, I'd love to have the computers connected to the Xserver, unfortunately against my heeding, I was ordered to take them off of the Xserver, so they only have a local account that automatically logs in on startup, and even though I have Parental Controls set, I can not stop them from going to Safari, selecting an inappropriate image and setting it as the background, so now I’ve been ordered to fix all of the backgrounds that people are messing with.
My Xserver is running OS X 10.4.11 Server Edition. Yes, I would love a new server, but that’s not happening due to budget cuts.
So what I am hoping for is a command that I can put into Apple Remote Desktop v3.5.3 and push out to all of the computers via its Unix commands and reset all the desktops to their default image.

Keynote presentations that will support small animations. How can I do it. Understand there might be some software which can be used via my desktop but not direct from iPad.

I wish to insert small animations into a Keynote presentation which I can make from my desktop, although I will ultimately wish to deliver from my ipad. Can not use any remote desktop like VNC after installing Oracle Linux 6.3

I just installed OL 6.3 on a HP Proliant ML380 g7. Now I want to connect to the server using any Remote Desktop tools but I can not!
I've activated system>pref>Remote Desktop
But I can not access any of servers from:
- a Mac using, Mac server sharing screen, VNC viewer or Microsoft Remote connection which is in a same subnet
- Other Server Using KRDC, Remote Desktop Viewer, terminal server client or tiger VNC viewer
Also I tried to connect to servers after activating krfb
but it always says no rout to server/ server not found/ connection closed
and remote desktop viewer can not find any host when I try to use option "find"

Make sure to enable "require a password..." in the Remote Desktop Preference on the Linux system. Some clients won't work unless this is set. Unfortunately the Remote Desktop Preferences panel on the Linux side does not show you the port it is listening on, but you can get it by clicking on the IP or name that it shows as a link. The first user or vnc server is usually listening on port 5900, then 5901, and so on.
Your problem is probably the firewall on your Linux system. You can disable the firewall on the Linux system:
service iptables stop
However, probably a better idea, simply tunnel the connection through SSH as following:
On the Mac, open the Terminal application from the Applications/Utilities folder. Then type the following:

ssh -L local_port:localhost:remote_port -N -f -l username server_address
</pre>
local_port = port on your Mac that does not conflict with any of your own screen-sharing or other services, e.g. 5555
remote_port = vnc server port on your Linux system
username = user for which you have enabled remote desktop sharing
server_address = ip address or FQDN of your Linux system.
For instance:

ssh -L 5555:localhost:5900 -N -f -l root 10.0.1.2
</pre>
The trick is now to connect to a local port on your Mac, instead using the address of your Linux server. The communication will be encrypted using ssh going over tcp port 22, which is normally enabled in the firewall.
The Mac screen sharing application is working fine. On your Mac, select "Go>Connect to Server" from the Finder menu and type:
vnc://localhost:5555

Can't download pictures to desktop.

I've been having some trouble downloading photos on some pages in Safari. I sometimes have a need to use a photo or save it for future review and often save those photos to my desktop by dragging and dropping them onto the desktop. This works most of the time, but there are some instances on Amazon and ebay where the photo will not drag. Here are a couple of examples:

In both examples I am unable to drag the image onto my desktop. This only happens with some photos on Amazon while ebay seems to have changed the way their photos are displayed and I can't drag any photos from ebay onto the desktop.

Welcome to Apple Discussions
Those images are within a frame, which essentially blocks you from dragging them to the desktop. The way to get around the "block" is to open the Activity panel (Window>Activity or option/command/A keys. Scroll down the list until you get to the web site. Look for the jpg and double click the entry. It ought to open in a new window or tab. From there, you can drag it to the desktop, or right click to save via the contextual menu.
One suggestion - to avoid cluttering the desktop with a lot of image files, create a folder on the desktop (vai the Finder) called "images" and drag the images there or save the images to the folder.

Can I use Apple Remote desktop to connect over the internet?

I would like to use Apple Remote Desktop to connect back to my MacPro desktop at home while I am on my Macbook Air at work. Will I need a static IP from my service provider to do it.

It's not absolutely necessary but it would be more useful if you did have one. Most ISPs will require you to have a business class broadband service at your home rather than a residential one. These cost more (a lot more in some cases) than a residential service. Call your home location's ISP and discuss it with them.
If the cost is too much then you could go for a DynDNS account which is free. The details of this account would be configured in the whatever you're using as a firewall at your home's location. This assumes the firewall has the facility to add such an account. Thereafter it's just a question of configuring the port fowarding feature of that firewall.
A potentially 'big' problem though is whether or not your workplace will allow that kind of traffic out of their network. This would be something you'd need to discuss with them first.

Using picture as menu background

Hi I want to use a picture I took as the background on my main menu. I created button and placed them on top of the picture and nothing is highlighting or anything.
Do I have to do something to the picture before importing so that that buttons work?

Are you button elements part of your image? So, when you're creating a button, you're just drawing the box around those button elements in your picture?
If so, you also need to create the overlay file that will define what parts of the button "light up", so to speak.
The overlay file needs to be the same size as your background image, but should be black where you need the button to change color. For example, if your background image has text for "Special Features", that text needs to be in black on a white background. When you define the button by drawing the box in DVDSP, anything within those bounds that is black in the overlay file will be available to change color states.

How can I use an image as background for the entire page?

With CSS mill, the solid color was defined in the color.X.property file and there is no place to define an image to use as the background? Is it doable to use an image as the background for teh entire page? If so, where to add it and how to implement? Thank you!

While I have been able to add the image to a JLabel and insert it into frames, so that it looks like a suitable background, I have found it impossible to place any other component over the top of said imageDid you set a layout manager for the label?

Only raw video can be used with green screen background? What?

Latest of all software.
I have played with green screen a lot trying to make it work. The instructions say, and the only way to make it work, is to drag the background only to main time line in project pane, then drag a raw video clip from the events viewer on top of it, and choose green screen. This makes the video clip an add on to the main time line which is the back drop (like a title is an add on to a video clip).
As I have railed in other posts, this doesn't make much sense. But the real problem is you can only drag RAW video onto the back ground from events, and can not edit it any way afterwards (since it is treated as an add on, not the main time line). You can edit the back ground, since it is in the main time line.
The bottom line is: you cannot drag a RAW video onto the project pane, edit it and get it the way you want, and then add a back ground via the green screen. This make no sense.
Am I doing something wrong?

Well, here is a convoluted method that seems to work...
1) drag the raw video to the project pane, edit to your heart's content.
2) save it as a .mov file (i.e. you are all done with it no more changes...ever).
3) import that .mov file File, Import as a new event.
4) drag the background(s) on to project pane, make it long enough for video
5) drag RAV .mov file (which is really a finished edited file) on to background, choose green screen).
You now have an edited .mov with a green screen background.
Could green screen be implemented more poorly? It would be hard to see how.
I still feel like I am missing something. Any ideas?

I can't use Apple Remote desktop to connect to a Lion 10.7 mac form SL 10.6 Mac.

I already upgraded ARD to 3.5.1 on the 10.6 machine. What is causing this. the 10.7 Mac was recently upgraded from 10.6 to 10.7.1 using the Lion USB Key.
any Ideas out there? Everytime I try to connect to the lion mac form SL it gets a connection failed error in ARD?

Use Lion Recovery to repair the startup disk if necessary, or reinstall the Mac OS X.
