Can the Time Capsule be used for scanner sharing?

I have successfully replaced my Linksys router with the Time Capsule and also hooked it to my USB HP 2200 all-in-1 printer. Works great except I can't get my wireless iMac or MacBook to see the HP all-in-1 as a scanner. The "network" printing works great via the TC.
Has anyone successfully integrated with a USB scanner yet?

I have this exact same problem, but only with a different printer/scanner (I even switched from a Linksys router). My printer is the Epson RX595, and as you stated, I can also print wirelessly to it from both my MacBook Pro and PC (connected wirelessly and via ethernet to the TC respectively). Now everywhere I've read is pretty much pointing to the "USB scanning not fully supported with TC", but I was wondering if Apple or Epson would have a solution for this in the future as I bought my printer not too long ago and don't want to have to upgrade just yet. I really want to keep it connected to my TC, since my PC doesn't have to stay on to act as a print server (previous setup).

Yes, on XP, Vista and 7. Have not tried 8.

Genie Timeline Pro does a very nice job...and it is similar to Apple's Time Machine.  It's not cheap though.  Check with the Genie folks for more info and compatibility with Windows 8.

  • Can the time capsule be used as both a time machine backup and NAS storage

Can the time capsule be used as both a time machine backup and NAS storage?   I want to use the drive as external, wireless storage for all of my files so all my PCs, MACs and iOS devices can access the files.  Plus, I want to use the drive for backing up my iMac via time machine.  Can the time capsule device be used for both these purposes simultaneously?  If not, are the other suggestions on how I can do this?

Can the time capsule device be used for both these purposes simultaneously?
It can, but is really not recommended. Sooner or later there will be a fight for space on the drive between Time Machine and the other files.
If you have plenty of free space on the drive, you can do this......but.....have you thought about how you will back up the "other" files that are stored on the Time Capsule?

  • Can the Time Capsule be used just to back up on an existing wi-fi network?

Can the Time Capsule be used just to back up on an existing wi-fi network?    We just set-up a new Xfinity wireless modem which is supposed to be very fast, but Time Capsule set-up instructions indicate we need to use the Time capsule as the primary internet connection.   True?

My mistake. Meant to reply to snorris3. Text is repeated below:
Can I still use it as a back up device?   My new modem is also the router.
    Yes you can.
The best way (and really the only way) to set up the Time Capsule would be to connect an Ethernet cable from your modem/router to the Time Capsule.
The Time Capsule will produce a wireless network by default, but if you don't want to use that network, it is a simple matter to turn off the wireless on the Time Capsule and use it only as a  hard drive for backups.
I would be very surprised if the Xfinity modem/router would even come close to the wireless performance of the Time Capsule, but that may be another discussion.
If you elect not to use the wireless on the Time Capsule, then you will be backing up over the existing wireless network that you already have.
That would be a shame, since a third to half of the total cost of the Time Capsule is tied up in the wireless router portion of the Time Capsule. If you want to use the existing Xfinity wireless network, you could save yourself quite a bit of money by simply connecting a USB or Firewire hard drive to your Mac for backups. But, it's your call.

  • Can the time capsule be used as an external hard drive

Can the time capsule be used as an external hard drive

If you mean by usb to a computer no.. it is a network device only and has to be used via ethernet or wireless.
It can be used standalone,, ie not plugged into an existing network.. but there are some steps required to make it work if you want internet connection at the same time. It is generally much easier to have the TC bridged into the network.

  • Can a time capsule be used for backup and as a remote drive?

    Hi Mac users
I want to know if I am able to use the Time Capsule as both a backup, and as a remote Hard Drive at the same time? My Macbook Pro's hard drive is full from movies I have downloaded on itunes, so I need to store them somewhere else, ie not on my macbooks hard drive. At the same time I want to backup everything on the macbook. Is this possible?
    Thanks
    Chris

want to know if I am able to use the Time Capsule as both a backup, and as a remote Hard Drive at the same time?
You can, but the Time Capsule was really designed for Time Machine backups and there will be fight for space at some point in the future if you store a signficant amount of data on the Time Capsule drive.
You probably have not thought about this, but if your "original" copies of your movies, audio files, etc are on the MacBook now and you move them to the Time Capsule drive....your "originals" will be on the Time Capsule.
When....not if....you have a problem with the Time Capsule drive, you have no backups since your "originals" are on the drive that failed, and you lose everything.
A much safer strategy would be to add an external USB or Firewire drive to your MacBook and store all of your media files there. Then, Time Machine will backup both your MacBook and the external drive.
So, you have "originals" in one location and backups in another location. That's what a backup strategy is all about. In the event that one drive fails...and it will....you still have another copy on another drive.

  • Can the Time Capsule be used as iTunes library?

I want to buy one, but only if I can put all my music files on it and play them on iTunes wirelessly through my computer and add them to my iPhone and iPod from it?
Is this possible or do i still have to plug in an external hard drive?
I'm a new yorker and trying to eliminate having so many wires in my apartment...
    Thanks in adavance

Unable to do so. Also, does TC have to be active as a logged in Network in Finder? (I have not deleted these files on iTunes yet.) Also, what method should one use to move movies to TC?
You have to move the library from within iTunes, not just simply move the files in finder.
Yes, of course the TC must be connected and running. It will show under "shared" in finder.

  • Can Time Capsule be used for Backup of Iphone

Can Airport Time Capsule be used for Backup of Iphone & ipad

The iPhone and iPad cannot back up directly to the Time Capsule.....they only back up to iTunes on your Mac or PC....or....to iCloud.
If you are using Time Machine to backup your Mac to the Time Capsule, then all of the backups of your iOS devices in iTunes will then be backed up to the Time Capsule.
See this Apple support document for more information on iOS backups.

Due to the kind of plug used the US power cord is rated at the 125v value.. and legally we cannot advise you to use on higher voltages.. although I have never had issues in Australia.. 240v.
But adapters from your Euro power plug to US are generally ugly .. unsightly things.. and often sit high above the socket and are none too stable.. I agree with Bob.. just go out and buy a standard figure 8 power cord.. check with Apple in Italy for a white one.. if you are going to have it on show.. black are far more common. Or even check ebay for a standard power Apple power cord as a number of items they sell use the figure8 socket.

  • Can I connect an external HD on the time capsule and use it as storage space ?

    Hello,
I am thinking about purchasing a time capsule for backing up my data, but I also need storage space for photos and videos, can I connect an external hard drive to the time capsule and use it as storage ? If so, is there any risk of the time machine use the external hd space for backup as well and eat up all the storage ?

can I connect an external hard drive to the time capsule and use it as storage ?
Yes....for storage, as in backup files.  But, not recommended for "working" image or media libraries.
If so, is there any risk of the time machine use the external hd space for backup as well and eat up all the storage ?
No, unless you intend to also use the same drive for Time Machine backups.

  • Can the time capsule 2TB be used as more memory

Can the time capsule 2TB be used as more memory or is it just for backing suff up?
Can you wirelss transfer video and music to your iPhone or iPad without using the computer?

You can use Time Capsule as a 'simple' external harddisk, but keep in mind that the fastest connection with the TC is Ethernet which is slower than FireWire800 for example.
Currently iTunes and a USB-connection is needed for syncing an iPad or iPhone.
With the "PC Free" feature of the yet to be released iOS 5 (this fall...) this might not be needed anymore.

  • Can the hard drive from the Time Capsule be used as USB drive only?

My Time Capsule "router" kept losing the wireless capabilty, so I purchased an Airport Express (with the dual-band router).
I'd like to salvage the Time Capsule hard-drive portion and connect it to a USB port.
But when I plug-in the Time Capsule, the light blinks yellow suggesting some configuration problem.
When connecting to a USB port, my iMac will not detect a new device.
Can the Time Capsule hard-drive be used separately from the router?

Can the hard drive from the Time Capsule be used as a USB drive only?
Sorry, but no. The Time Capsule is a network drive, so it must be connected to a network using an Ethernet or wireless connection. The USB port on the Time Capsule is there only to add additional storage capacity.
Can the Time Capsule hard-drive be used separately from the router
Yes, you would configure the Time Capsule in Bridge Mode to do this. If you do not need the wireless capability, you can turn the wireless off on the Time Capsule.

  • Is it possible to reserve a space on the time capsule to use to share files like; music, pictures, or documents?

There are 4 Mac's in my house and I'd like to back up all of them to a time capsule, i know it is possible to do this. however i would also like to be able to dump files like; music, pictures, and documents onto the time capsule so that the others mac will be able to access these files when they want to. This will stop the need for me leaving my mac on whilst other macs access my hard drive, or passing USB sticks around the house.

With an ordinary disk you can partition it with Disk Utility to reserve space for various things. With the Time Capsule you cannot partition it because Disk Utility doesn't work on networked drives and AirPort Utility can only format an entire Time Capsule, not paritition it.
You can simply store the files you want to share on the Time Capsule and turn on file sharing, and it will do what you want. The only downside is that because you can't reserve space, eventually the Time Machine backup(s) on it will reduce the amount of available space to zero. This would eventually happen anyway whether you store your files on there or not, and then Time Machine starts deleting the oldest backups, but if you store your files on there and space goes to zero people won't be able to add files.
I'm not sure about the "not powered" part. For many months I stored an iTunes library and music on a USB hard drive that was powered off the Time Capsule USB port. Of course, I did this so that the music would be accessible anywhere in the home. I swear that the external drive never used its own power cable. It was a portable bus-powered USB enclosure with a laptop-sized drive in it, though, so it normally does not require a power cable. If the files you need to share aren't too large, you might think about plugging in a USB stick drive which would be very compact, needs little power, inexpensive, and has no moving parts to break or heat up.

  • Can the time capsule work as a extra drive

Can the time capsule work as a extra drive

It is an extra drive that is being used for backup. That's what it's intended for. It's not really intended to be used as a storage drive, but you can use it in that fashion. However, backup and storage should be kept separate. If you need extra storage then buy another external drive but one the connects directly to your computer. Use the Time Capsule with Time Machine as your backup solution.
