Can Time capsule be used a normal router?

and I would like all my macs to connect to the internet as well. Is this possible? thanks

To answer your original question, yes Time Capsule can be used as a normal router. Think of it as a router with a built in hard drive. And yes all your Macs can connect to it to share Internet.
Now as for your second question, how are you accessing the Internet right now? Because you can't connect the Time Capsule to your phone jack on the wall. I'm assuming you're using some kind of DSL. If so, then you need to connect your DSL modem to the Time Capsule, not Time Capsule to your phone wall jack. Then you'll be able to share and connect with all your Macs. Make sense?
Time Capsule has ethernet ports (bigger "phone" jack), take the ethernet cable from your DSL modem and plug it into the WAN ethernet port of the Time Capsule.
If you're on dial-up, then you can't share Internet with all your Macs. (Actually you could, but it's going to be painfully slow and not worth it)

can time capsule be used with windows as a wi fi router? or dose the disk that came with the time capsule work with windows program?

The wifi router side will work fine.
The disk that came with the TC should have windows version of airport utility but you can download it.. that is important if you want to setup the TC or use the shared disk.

  • Can time capsule be used on windows7

can time capsule be used on windows7

We have Macs and PCs in our house.  The mac is set up and running fine on TC/TM.
Questions is - what is the best way to also use TC to back up the windows 7 machines?
The windows machine is set up on the wireless network - but not currently sharing files.
If not practical I'll stay with the Windows external hard drive to back up that laptop.
    Thanks.
You can just connect to the TC and use a backup software.. I backup to TC using Macrium Reflect which is free for disk image.. paid for version does incremental.
Make sure you have plenty of space though on the TC for all the computers hdd usage.. with about 2x or 3x that space spare. TM uses a lot of free space and gets slow and unreliable deleting old backups if there isn't sufficient space.
An NTFS formatted disk makes good sense for a pc.. if you want to see and use the files you backup.

  • Can time capsule be used for wireless backup without serving as a router?

can time capsule be set and used for wireless backup without serving as a router?

Not if you want it to work.
If you do want stand alone .. ie a TC sitting all on its lonesome with no internet connection.. then reset to factory and start over..
The TC has to be in router mode so it can handle dhcp and addressing.
    Ignore all the problems.
BUT then you can connect your computer to TC for backup
    OR
you can connect to main wireless router for internet..
You cannot do both.. at the same time.
UNLESS you have ethernet connection.. to either main modem or TC.. if you have two networks and two different network clients, then you can do both at once but the setup is tricky.

  • Can Time Capsule be used to access video files for editing?  Or do I need a wired hard drive using USB/Firewire/Thunderbolt?

MORE INFO ABOUT WHAT I AM TRYING TO DO:
I'm using Final Cut Express 4 and would like to store my video clips on an external hard drive so the internal hard drive in my MacBook Pro 13 doesn't have to work so hard.  I heard from a reliable source that it might be impossible to access the files wirelessley though, meaning that I might need to get a wired external hard drive that uses USB, Firewire or Thunderbolt.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks a lot.

The experts in the iPhoto, Aperture and iMovie support areas all strongly advise against trying to locate a "working" library on a network drive, like the Time Capsule, even if the Mac is hard wired to the Time Capsule. Things would be a lot more dangerous with a wireless connection.
    Apple does as well:
“Additionally, storing the iPhoto (or other image) library on a network rather than locally on your computer can also lead to poor performance or data loss.”

You might want to post in the Final Cut Express support area to see if the folks over there feel the same way.
    Final Cut Express HD
Your best best....if you do not have the space on your Mac's hard drive.....would be to add a USB, FireWire or Thunderbolt drive directly to the Mac to establish a "local" connection. This is much better and more reliable setup that trying to use a network drive, like a Time Capsule.
Use the Time Capsule for its designed and intended purpose....your backups.....not "working" files. Time Machine on your Mac can back up both your Mac and the attached hard drive to the Time Capsule.

  • Can Time Capsule be used simply as a backup disk?

Is it possible to disconnect Time Capsule from the network (with router etc) and use it simply as a backup disk for Time Machine?  I would like to go back to using ethernet for internet as it is faster.

To be completely accurate, you cannot exclude the Time Capsule from your network, if you want to use it for anything at all. It does not have to serve as a wireless access point or your router but it does have to be available to your network.
You should also connect your Time Capsule using Ethernet for the same reason - it is faster.

  • Can Time Capsule be used for Backup of Iphone

Can Airport Time Capsule be used for Backup of Iphone & ipad

The iPhone and iPad cannot back up directly to the Time Capsule.....they only back up to iTunes on your Mac or PC....or....to iCloud.
If you are using Time Machine to backup your Mac to the Time Capsule, then all of the backups of your iOS devices in iTunes will then be backed up to the Time Capsule.
See this Apple support document for more information on iOS backups.

  • Can Time Capsule be used as an external drive but not a router

Greetings,  I have a spare 1TB older Time Capsule that I would like to give to a friend who would like to use it as an external hard drive w/time machine.  They currently have a current iMac with Comcast internet and router which they would prefer to continue using for internet access.  My question is: can a time capsule be set up to be used as an external backup drive without using the router capability. Thanks for any advise.

My question is: can a time capsule be set up to be used as an external backup drive without using the router capability
    Yes
Connect the Time Capsule to the Comcast router using a wired Ethernet connection from a LAN port on the Comcast router to the WAN port on the Time Capsule and set it up to create a network.
Then, go back in using AirPort Utility and turn off the wireless function on the Time Capsule. The Time Capsule will operate as  "bridge" in this type of setup, so it will not perform as a router.

  • Can Time Capsule Be Used Only as a Hard Drive, Not as a Router?

I have been using a Time Capsule as a router and as a wireless backup system for a year, but had endless trouble with the dual use, since my personal Macbook is on the second floor of my house and the router must reside in the basement, where we have other computers. Wireless backups are much too slow. So I replaced the Time Capsule with an Airport Extreme Base Station, which works fine. I'd like to continue using the Time Capsule, but solely for backups and not as a router, and connect the TC by ethernet or usb directly to the MacBook. Can this be done, and if so, how? Thanks!

Hello JohnFrancis. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I'd like to continue using the Time Capsule, but solely for backups and not as a router, and connect the TC by ethernet or usb directly to the MacBook. Can this be done, and if so, how?
Yes it can. You would just need to disable its wireless radio. You will also need to connect it by Ethernet as the TC's USB port is only for connecting it to USB hard drives, printers, and/or hubs.
To disable the radio: AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Time Capsule > Wireless tab > Wireless Mode = Off

  • Can Time Capsule replace my old wireless router?

I would like to use time capsule as my router. But when I plug it straight into the phone line, I lose the internet connection. Can this be done?

    Hi,
You cannot connect the Time Capsule directly to a telephone line. Normally, an ADSL or cable modem is connected to the WAN port.
Is your existing device a combined ADSL modem and wireless router? Any details about the model and the type of service?

  • Can time capsule be used for anything else than a backup?

Just wondering if my time capsule which is 2T can be used for anything else other than as backup.  As a router it is working great and as backup no problems.  However, for example can I use Apple TV with it.

  • Can Time Capsule be used strictly as a wireless network for ATV and TiVo?

I apologize in advance for the lengthy narrative but I feel that it will only help in describing my challenge/problem.
I currently own and have been successfully using an iMac and Apple TV and syncing with my iTunes account. I want to transfer the ATV to my fiancee's house since I'm spending most of my time there. Until we move in officially I'll be keeping my Mac at home. She does not have WiFi and has an old laptop that I'm pretty sure doesn't even support a WiFi radio. We eventually plan on replacing her laptop with a new Mac Book but until that time comes all I want to do is set up a wireless network for the ATV and TiVo service that I also brought over.
So, I bought the Time Capsule with the future in mind. My question, can I set up TC to act as a wireless router for ATV and TiVo only but hardwire her laptop to keep connected to the Internet? Will I need to connect ATV to her iTunes service through her laptop? Or can I access my information using ATV if the WiFi is set up correctly?
I know that until I bring my Mac and we eventually replace her laptop, I bought a very expensive wireless router but there is a method to my madness....I think.
Any suggestions on the hookup process will be greatly appreciated.

    Certainly.

The network would have the same abilities as any other network. I don't know how the AppleTV connects to iTunes but it wouldn't be any different than if the AppleTV were connected to something else.

  • Can time capsule be used as ADSL2  modem

Hi, i am just wondering can i used time capsule as ADSL2  modem, instead of the my ISP provided wifi modem kit. If i can then how, does there any specific configuration required?

....wondering can i used time capsule as ADSL2  modem.....
No, since the Time Capsule does not have a modem on board. It is a router and hard drive only.
You will need to use the modem that your service provider has supplied with the Time Capsule.

  • Can Time Capsule be used as regular external HD?

When I purchased Time Capsule, I specifically asked about using it as an external HD and partitioning it for backups for other networked computers (ethernet connections) as well as for Time Machine with my WiFi connected laptop.  I was told yes at the Mac reseller, but have been unable to do so through Disk Utility, where I've done this with conventional external drives. I did look at Airport Utility, but was unsure whether to proceed, so I'm asking here.
By now I'm wondering, can it be done, and if so, how?  By the way, the principal other computer I'd like to backup is a G5 Power Mac, just to be clear.  It's connected by ethernet cable, and of course, the router function works just fine.  But it doesn't "see" the exrternal drive, either.
    Thanks,
    jeff

TC cannot be partitioned.. the reseller is clueless..
The TC cannot and will not ever be an external drive.. it is now and forevermore a network drive.
Disk Utility cannot see a network drive .. it has to be handled by the OS of the TC.. which is what you see via the airport utility... and of course that has almost no controls whatsoever.
The TC is designed for Time Machine.. and TM from different computers works fine.. they each produce a sparsebundle which is a virtual disk.. so almost but not quite a partition.
So as long as you use Time Machine you are fine.
A G5 power mac on 10.5 OS should be fine.. That was the first version of Time Machine.
The issue of it actually being able to connect to the drive is something else. You might need to help it by manually mounting the disk..
And I have to admit my association with Mac is since Snow Leopard.. so if this works .. you will need to apply your knowledge of earlier OS.
In finder, use Go, connect to server.
    Type AFP://TCname or TCIPaddress.
The TC name is substituted with the actual network name.. you will find that much easier if you stick with names that are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric .. not names that Apple uses by default.. like Fred Blog's Airport Time Capsule.. which is illegal in so many ways. Reduce that down to .. FBTC
    Then you can type AFP://FBTC
And it should be able to then find the network resources and ask for a password.. it is public by default. If you changed it then type in that instead of public. Save the password in your keychain.
