Can we install Gnome 3.3 ?
Is there any way to install the unstable branch of Gnome in Arch? I've looked around but I can't seem to find anything.

thats part of the game, isn't it? what is the fun, if the path is tried, tested, safe and secure?
on a serious note, didn't know the repo was not public. Anyways, thanks for the hardwork.
lol. Nevertheless you shouldn't use the repo before all the packages are in there. Otherwise the mix of gnome-unstable & gnome-stable packages will definitely break your system;
And well, I also think the repo is quite public as I can access it anytime I wan't

Can i install gnome 3.8 or 3.7 ?
Hello guys,
Can i install gnome 3.7 or 3.8 in arch linux ? Is it possible ?aiguofer wrote:
Well, there seem to be some packages for 3.7.92 in gnome-unstable, however it doesn't seem to be a complete set. I don't even see gdm in there, and it gives me a error message about 'gnome-libsoup'.
Has anyone tried upgrading it yet? did they integrate gnome-libsoup and libsoup? I'd like to try it out, but I don't have the time to deal with a broken system right now. Anyone's experience would be very informative!
To be blunt, anyone who tries to upgrade now using gnome-unstable is being stupid and will break their system. Not all the packages are in their and ultimately the gnome maintainers have not announced gnome 3.8 in any fashion. -
[SOLVED] Can I install Gnome 3 alongside KDE?
Long story short, I hated everything about Gnome 3 when it first came out, but 3.10 (and 3.12) look sleek. I've just installed it in VBox and it seems great, though there are some graphical issues (I'm guessing that's because of the VBox).
Currently running Arch as a host, with KDE 4.12 installed. I remember back in the old days you could install both DEs easily and switch between them in the login manager - is this still the case? Should I simply do a pacman -S install gnome and that's it? The main question is - this should not cause any issues, correct?
Cheers,
Bo
Last edited by Deusdies (2014-03-30 22:49:39)Try using gnome classic. Its preconfigured gnome-shell so it looks a little bit like gnome2, but with the gnome3 functionality... and its lightweight (in comparisson to KDE4). Which was the main reason why I switched from xfce4 to gnome3. (and i am using the gnome-classic one) KDE takes too long to load IMHO and thats something I cannot live with.

I have just installed arch for the first time and I am trying to get a desktop up and running.
When I attempt to install gnome with pacman -S gnome it gives me some crap about a python dependency not being met. It says "error: cannot resolve "readline>-6.0.00", a dependency of "python"
Everything is synced and up to date.tried again a few days ago and it worked mysteriously

Can I install GNOME 2.x themes onto my Xfce4 install?
Hey guys I will like to know if I could install this gnome theme,
http://xfce-look.org/content/show.php/D … ent=142422
Onto my Xfce4 system, and if so Will i follow the rules in the link to install it, or on the xfce4 arch linux wiki page?
Thank you:Dtomk wrote:That's not a gnome theme - it's a gtk2 theme, says it right there under the theme name. So go ahead and install it, both methods are essentially the same.
kk thanks man, installed it and got it workings! -

Can't login after fresh installing gnome using gdm 3.2 [SOLVED]
I don't know if this topic was already solved, I hope someone can help me about this. I have a fresh install of arch linux (just yesterday) and installed gnome and gnome-extra packages. As usual, I go with the procedure of editing my .xinitrc (exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch gnome-session), rc.conf (...dbus networkmanager...), inittab (runlvl 5, x:5......gdm). After a reboot, gdm screen appeared, I can't find my account, then there were two choices, "Sign in" and "Not listed..."). I clicked Not listed, then entered my user and password, after that, it responded: Authentication failure/failed... or something like that. I tried it again and it's the same. Temporarily, I'm using startx or slim (depends on my mood). Can anyone help me?
here's my gdm's 0.log and 0-greeter.log respectively:

Thanks for any help solving this problem. I've re-installed arch probably 4 times think that I am making mistakes in the install process, but this last time I made sure to do everything the wiki said so this is puzzling.bohoomil wrote:Try this.

When I login either from gdm or lxdm the screen sits blue for 1~2min then a message pops up like "Oh no! Something has gone wrong... Please logout and try again" and I can only logout and nothing else.
A couple of days ago I installed arch and started to learn how to use pacman and I managed to install gnome 3 with no trouble, everything running smooth. Then I met the AUR, and the bleeding edge stuff, then I installed packer and this brilliant idea came up: why gnome 3, I want unity! And I started installing things mentioned in the Ayatana wiki page, I always rebooted after installing a few packages to check if everything was going well, but after I install compiz-core-unity-git something went wrong, the problem is that I'm not really sure if it was that package, but things collapsed when I ran a compiz command which I can't remember. I tried uninstalling all the packages I could think of being related to the problem, didn't work. I even uninstalled the whole gnome, gdm and xorg, and installing everything again, didn't work either. Here is what everything.log is saying about the error:

I have hope that somebody has had this issue and that it has a trivial solution which just happend to skip my thoughts.
Seriously I'm considering reinstalling arch from scratch.Sounds very familiar... I got all excited about aur and all the bleeding edge software out there for arch when I first switched and ended up messing my system up in much the same way.
Anyways, for starters you can post the output of
pacman -Qm
here to see if anyone spots something bogus that you've installed from aur.
I'm sure there are those that would disagree with me, but if I were you I would just save the output of
pacman -Q
and reinstall your system from scratch... Also, I don't know if you're using yaourt, but I would advise against it in the beginning since it makes it so easy to install unsupported software... I think it's better to download the package and makepkg it by hand because it makes you think more about what you're doing (at most use something like cower). That's just my opinion though... -
Can't install Oracle 9i for Red Hat Linux AS3
I can't install Oracle Database 9i for Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

anybody know how to install for RH AS3, I have tried many time to find out the libraries but still not work and I've plan for RAC also.
ChedDid you carefully go through all pre-req steps for install?
Oracle needs some "compatibility libraries" as well (compat-lib*). Here are packages for AS 10g, most or all of which apply to Database too.
Checking operating system packages: gcc-3.2.3-20,compat-gcc-7.3-2.96.122,compat-gcc-c++-7.3-2.96.122,compat-libstdc++-7.3-2.96.122,compat-libstdc++-devel-7.3-2.96.122,setarch-1.3-1,pdksh-5.2.14,sysstat-4.0.7,gnome-libs-1.4.1.2.90-34.1,libstdc++-3.2.3,compat-libstdc++-devel-7.3-2.96.122,compat-glibc-7.x-2.2.4.32.5
When required packages are in place, there's another error lurking, related to __libc_wait symbol.
runInstaller "boots" OUI, which includes running a JRE from tmp. This JRE (build 02) is broken, but you can setup to run another one via oraparam.ini and JRE_LOCATION. Download build 10 from Sun (google "jre 1.3.1 download"). -
Problems after trying to install gnome-session-compiz
Hi, as explained here i've installed gnome-session-compiz, but i forgot to install compiz-fusion before that.
now, if I try pacman -S compiz-fusion-gtk, pacman outputs something like this (i'm translating from italian):
Warning: impossible to resolve "compiz-core=0.9.2", a dependency of "compizconfig-python"
Warning: impossible to resolve "libcompizconfig=0.9.2", a dependency of "compizconfig-python"
:: The following packages can't be updated due to unsolvable dependencies:
ccsm fusion-icon
Do you want to ignore these packages for this update? [y/N]
If I press "y" pacman downloads and installs only these packages:
compizconfig-backend-gconf-0.8.4-1 compiz-bcop-0.8.4-1
compiz-fusion-plugins-main-0.8.6-1
compiz-fusion-plugins-extra-0.8.6-2 emerald-0.8.4-2

which I suppose are the remaining packages of compiz-fusion-gtk.
Before pressing "y" I tried to uninstall gnome-session-compiz (pacman -Rcs gnome-session-compiz) but the result is the same.
What should I do?
Thanks!

Is there a reason why you don't want to install iLife '08?
You can download and install the last version of iMovie HD (from iLife '06), if you have iLife '08 installed. -
Question about installing Gnome
Hey everyone. I'm currently a Ubuntu user planning on trying out Arch Linux after my exams are done (in 2 weeks ).
I understand that in order to install Gnome, i need to update pacman using the commands 'pacman -Syu' and 'pacman -Syy'. After this process i can install gnome by using the command 'pacman -S gnome gnome-extra'.
However, one thing that i couldn't find was whether or not this command will install the latest version of Gnome, which i believe is version 2.24.
One other general question i have is, how do i know which version the application i'm trying to install is when the commands are simply 'pacman -S [application name]'?
Thanks for your help.Hrod beraht wrote:

Use pacman -Ss [application name]. The second small 's' means search, so using pacman -Ss gnome would show you everything with 'gnome' in it's name. Among them is gnome-desktop, which shows as version 2.24.2-1

Awful Static Noise After Installing GNOME 3
Hey guys,
I installed GNOME 3 last night and did not notice this until today. After setting the TIMEZONE variable in rc.conf and restarting the computer I am now experiencing a very high pitched static noise that I cannot stand. The static noise is just happening all the time, even when no sounds are playing or anything. I should note that installing GNOME 3 installed PulseAudio for some reason if that makes a difference.ok, do you know if your time is set to UTC or localtime? If I'm not mistaken, UTC is recommended.
It sounds like your hardware clock is giving you the troubles. See here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Time
You can change the time of your hardware clock via the command line by following the commands in the wiki.
I also noticed that you have hwclock in your deamons array in your rc.conf. Not sure if that's an additional source of trouble, see the "Common Problems" section of the wiki linked above for more info. I don't remember the reason why, but I did not include it in my deamons array and haven't had any issues.
Not sure if this is relevant, but if you dual boot with windows see the "UTC in Windows" section of the wiki as well as Windows could be changing your manual time adjustments back to what it wants everytime you boot into it. -
Hi, I am trying to install G3 but I am having a bit of an issue.
Every thing downloads ok but when it finally checks for file conflicts I get this error:

Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
What do I need to do to fix this? It's a problem with Wicd, normally you can force update wicd and after that install gnome as you would normally do.
pacman -Syy
pacman -Sf wicd -
Trying to load and install gnome
I have tried to load and install gnome for thge past three(3) days with no success. If this is what Arch linux is all about then its lost on me. Anybody want to change my mind?
this is an example of how not to ask a question.. first. if you want to leave go ahead, no one is holding you back.. second obviously, trying to "load and install gnome for the past three(3) days with no success" is not what archlinux is about.. having said that..
you need to install xorg
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg
and the you need to install gnome
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gnome
next you add a login screen or configure your .xinitrc
i can only tell you this as you provide no useful information or say _specifically_ what your problem is

My 2Ghz MacBook Pro is waiting in it's box....
The local Apple store called me today. A 2Ghz MBP arrived and my name was next. I picked it up on my lunch hour, now it's sitting in a box, waiting for me to open it. I have about 2 more hours before I leave work. I guess this is a "good" problem to
